She has a lot of potential and could grow into a really successful adult. But not if she doesn't find a way to harness her personality and direct it to productive things. She desperately needs the adults here to help her with that.

&&&

I agree with this. But I also think she's got a huge well of resentment built up against both her mother and her younger siblings. This has been pretty obvious on the surface for years, she's been vocal about it many times on camera. And in order for her to get her attitude on straight, she's going to have to find some way to sort out that seething mess in her psyche. Otherwise, it's gonna stand between her and the world for the rest of her life. Serious therapy has been in order for this girl for a very long time. But no doubt it would have interfered with filming.

_____
I agree.

Example when my nephew was 3-(he's 7 now) he threw a glass candy dish at his other grandmother and she did nothing but laugh and till this day he doesn't respect her.

Example 2. same nephew 2 years later he slapped my mom his grandmother dead in the face in church. So she spanked him and he has never ever done it again.

My point is once a child crosses that boundary and he/she isn't corrected they'll take full advantage of not being corrected. And the older they get the worser they'll get.

fidosmommy said...

There are many theories and opinions about spanking as a form of discipline. My mother spanked. When I was an adult, I decided to tell her how thankful I was to have had her as my Mom, what a positive influence she had on me, and how deeply I loved her. I told her there were only 2 things, out of all my years of living under her roof, that I wish had been different.
1) her control over food (I have struggled with food issues as an adult) and 2) she spanked me.
I told her the only thing I had not been been able to move past or forgive was the spanking. It did not create respect, it fostered resentment and anger.

Maybe I'm just foolish for feeling that way, but it's
how I feel. I do not wish the same feelings on Mady.

For goodness sake I in no way meant the adults here on the blog!! lolol!!!

It's an expression. "The adults here". I mean the adults in HER life. How on earth would anyone here be able to have any influence on her? That would be totally creepy and I'm kind of shocked you read it that way, lol.

As for Mady being in those activities, I guess you didn't see the recent episode where she says she mostly sits in her room and stares at the walls. Hardly the life of a child busy with productive activities.

Tucker's Mom (previous page), it must have been a relief for TFW to drop the religion mask. Now she can enjoy Christmas for what it really is to her:
a sugar-filled, shop-til-you-drop attention grab
in which she can emerge the clear winner vs.
her deadbeat ex (RIP). Ol' buttinski Gladys is overdue for a "reason for the season" reminder tweet. She's fallin' down on the job.

So, will this week's M backlash have TFW dragging the brood to church for a midnight mass photo op? Or will Zorro have the sniffles, leaving the 9 stuck at home? Was it an Easter that she said the some of the kids had headaches and allergy symptoms which kept them from church? But projectile vomiting is not enough to put the kibosh on filming. Got it.

No, Mady is not a bad kid or person. I am sure she is intelligent and caring. But I think her very long term problem is not just from a lack of not being heard or even because Kate allows her to talk that way.

Look at the way Mady acted in the first season in 2007. It was way over the top. She was different than all the other seven kids that were raised in that house. I think she needs counseling and she needs it now. There is some deep issue that has been causing her to act out that way.

I remember an episode I think within the past 12 months where Mady literally addresses that people are writing about her being rude on TV and she laughed it off. Yes, Kate has not handled this correctly but I think Mady being bratty is way more than Kate letting her slide. And something tells me that Kate corrects Mady much more when they are not filming. For instance, in one episode Mady had her phone taken away and it was mentioned it was a very frequent thing. I think Kate is afraid to really correct Mady on film because of the backlash that may be recorded for all to view.

I feel for her too, 100%.

She is not a bad kid. She is rude because it's allowed. Many good kids would behave the same if such a thing were allowed by their parents. She has slowly pushed that boundary line farther and father out until it's virtually disappeared from the horizon. Any kid could do the same if given the opportunity. Most just don't get the chance to try.
*******
Me too.
Mady has pushed Jon away for whatever reason, and I think she's missing out on the balance Jon brought to parenting the kids.
Jon is down to earth, real, good hearted and connected tot he world around him.
Virtually all of Mady's influence has been her mother, and it really shows.
I really believe Mady needs a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary evaluation to help understand how best to help her.
I don't know if Kate is just blowing off Mady's huge red flags and writing them off as teen angst and hormones, but I sense it's more than that.
The twins had/have a front row seat to the acrimony between their parents, and you just can't go through what they've been through and come out unscarred.

A saying I've found to be quite true as I get older and wiser, is that "Watch how someone treats people. One day, that will be you"
The way Mady treats her mother and siblings will no doubt be how she treats her bf, friends, husband and own kids. Abusive people can fake it for awhile, but eventually, they can not or will not cover up their real selves anymore.
IMO, there's no doubt that Kate's tacit approval (if not encouragement) of Mady's mean mouth is teaching her to be abusive.
There's still time to teach Mady to actually "see other people" around her.

Leslie (#10), thank you for your thoughtful comment. My red flag moment was watching M kick a toddler sibling, glance at the camera as if having a moment of remorse, and then kicking her again. Of course that could have been an isolated incident. But when added with others we've seen, it creates some concern.

I agree that TFW might be firmer with M when the cameras arent' rolling. But, oh dear, that would mean the show isn't the "realest reality" after all. Color me shocked!

To all who celebrate, Merry Christmas Eve morning!

Mel said...

Leslie 10...yes, there is something wrong there, totally agree. The girl needs in depth help, and appears not to have received it. It might not be cureable, but with therapy she could learn to manage it.

However TFW is handling it clearly isn't working. It's not just a disciplinary thing, imo, but a deep seated psychological thing that is not being addressed. She needs just as much help as Collin, but isn't getting it.

I feel the worst for. Collin, Mady next.

I think the whole, "It's to hard to go to church because we're not a family anymore" has worn thin.
Somehow, Kate navigated her way across the country to California to utter those words. Presumably had nannies stay with the kids for a week, yet, loading the kids into the BBB to go worship nearby for an hour is just too much.

I remember Aunt Jodi intervening immediately when Mady misbehaved. She got down to her level, spoke calmly to her, explained what she was being called out for, and it stopped.

Sue_Buddy - I mentioned "Making a Murderer" to my sister and she and her son watched 5 episodes last night. My nephew told a few friends and now they're into it. As I was watching one episode last night, I continued to be awed by the photography - it's eerily beautiful, serene yet haunting. I think it sets the tone for the series. And I'm thrilled that this is a mostly female production.

fidosmommy said...

Tucker's Mom, (18) I remember Jon doing the same thing. The whole family was on an outing, one of the kids acted out, and Jon took her aside, got down on her level and talked to her. I could not see any sign of outward anger from Jon nor fear in his child. After a short while they both went back to the others.

I remember also the walk in the woods episode where each kid had a stick. Alexis (??) kept swinging hers like a rapier. Jon asked, then demanded she stop but she kept poking it around near her siblings. So, Jon grabbed the stick, broke it in half, and the child who would not listen had no stick. Perfectly reasonable response to the situation, imo. But many thought it was a case of lousy parenting from an overly mean dad.

What woukd Kate have done, seriously?

Those two very talented women actually moved to Manatowoc while they were filming.

I love their film making style. I see a lot of David Sutherland influences in it. The slow but calculated pacing, not being afraid of silent moments in the film, the sweeping midwest landscapes, the haunting score.

Really well done and I hope it gets recognized during awards season.

I doubt Mady will be edited out. I doubt Kate (and Mady) care what people think. If anything, TLC loves controversy. They are already aware what a bratty person Mady is. It plays into the single mom crap.

Janice in Mo said...

I felt bad for Mady there. It's just a stupid task made up for filming purposes. So what if she messed something up. Oh right, it IS a big deal because now she messed up the filming schedule

No, I think it was more about her "wasting" ingredients. Kate went on about that for the second round saying use what you want but don't open several "cream cheeses or chips"...so Mady likely got the flour and sugar mixed up and she had to trash it. I don't think Mady gives a hoot if she pisses Kate off, unless Kate was holding her reward over her head.

I think Mady wants to be the next Miranda Sings or some other you tuber/internet sensation. I think this almost 2 personalities of Mady is something she has had within her since she was very young. Mady is either very happy or very pissed.

I am curious if she really has friends of her own, not just Marley and how she behaves in school.

I agree though, Kate doesn't command or require respect. She certainly hasn't earned it. The boys seem to be the only ones who shut up and don't cross her. I think Joel will be the only one who has a chance at a normal future, likely due to his close relationship with his Dad. Aaden seems like he could easily be another Jon and poor Collin, God only knows what path he will take.

Hey TLC, if you keep filming these kids, lets see the boys is baseball or basketball, anything that regular boys do.

Tucker's Mom (#18), I seem to remember Beth disciplining M once, too. And maybe TFW said something like, Beth has her number, and wasn't
going to put up with anything.

I think part of the reason TFW was talking about all the gifts and treats is, in some twisted way, to remind us that this show is what keeps her family afloat. There was a solid day of harsh talk about M and her issues, with the next thought being, when will they cancel this fiasco? Even fans are finally sounding concerned about this teen. So I think TFW is subtly reminding people that without the show, her kids would be huddled around a can of Sterno for warmth, opening a donated 4-pack of Play-Doh that they need to divide among the 8 of them.

What amazed me is they had 40 acres of junk cars! They could sell parts from the cars, but I don't think many people work on their own cars anymore...it's all computerized now. My brother was a car nut, and loved to work on them. I'd go with him to the salvage yard when he was looking for a particular part. I think the Averys also rebuilt some of the cars and sold them.

localyocul said...

With M,it's the old nature/nurture thing. And although not identical, she does have a twin with a very different temperament. M is a strong-willed child. I have a strong willed child, which is partly defined as a kid who perseveres negatively long after another child would give in. You have to address this temperament specifically. I read so many books and sought counseling for my kid...while TFW seems to shrug it off even though she should be able to see it's not just normal teen behavior if she looks at Cara. Or if she reads the comments about her show. Being strong-willed can turn into being determined and productive if it is addressed and channeled properly but that hasn't happened here. Everyone is lumped together. Oh, and C is probably another strong-willed child, along with whatever other issues he may have.

Admin, Sue Buddy and Jane, I keep pulling the blog back to "Making a Murderer". I guess because it keeps pulling me back to watch.

Silence is as much of the dialogue as are words.

Admin, if we were watching together, I would keep hitting the pause button to ask you legal questions.

It is impossible to express some of my thoughts without spoilers.

There is a snippet of a phone conversation that stays with me. It is a recorded on a hollow-sounding jail phone. The words are spoken slowly and with thick confusion. A son tells his mother that he has been told that his testimony is inconsistent. He asks, "What does that mean?" After a pause, his mother admits that she does not know what that word means. Together, they guess -- maybe false.

Within the context of the documentary, that brief bit of interaction captures the bleakness.

I just think Mady is the child most like her mother in personality and always has been. Hopefully she will mature past this stage. Some of the other kids act like brats right now but I can see them growing into nice decent people at some point.I really don't think you can blame it all on the age on the parents- it's nature AND nurture IMO. I do feel sorry for her but she really is hard to watch. I hope she's nicer with friends and siblings 'in person.' Occasionally you see kinder moments with her and Cara or a brother/sister or pal.

I also watched the Bold and the Beautiful. Nice sentimental Christmas Eve show, with Eric bringing Brooke to his house to celebrate and remembrance of deceased Stephanie Forrester (played by Susan Flannery). Fun fact: when Susan the actress got lung cancer, the writers had Stephanie get cancer too and wrote that into the show, chemo side effects and hair loss and all. And when her cancer recurred in real life, they not only killed off the character but gave her a fabulous send off with one of the best soap opera funerals ever.
Only Y&Rs funeral for Katherine Chancellor was better. That character death was written into the show after the actress Jeanne Cooper died in real life.
And that is my soap opera trivia for today!

-------------------
I thought both - car parts and scrap metal, but mainly the car parts. I googled it, and Wikapedia agrees.

You don't have to work on your own car to use recycled parts. I once had a recycled manual transmission installed in an "older" car, and it worked great. This was after attempts to repair the transmission with new parts had not only cost me more than the replacement transmission, but failed after a year or two.

As someone else mentioned, sometimes cars that were written off after an accident are rebuilt and sold. My daughter bought such a car. She was invited to take part in a class-action lawsuit launched by buyers who hadn't realized what they were buying. She declined on the basis of the fact that the car's history was disclosed to her, and that it had been a really good car.

The only problem she had is that some of her car's parts were from cars of a different year, occasionally complicating repairs. For example, she had to replace the radiator cap, and the cap they ordered didn't fit because her radiator was from a car of a different year. But they were able to sort it out, at no extra cost, just a bit of inconvenience.

You can have similar problems with parts on a non-rebuilt car. Honda Civics made in Canada have a different clutch cylinder than those made in Japan in the same year. You ask how I know this? A delayed repair (and, in our case, extra expense because the one we needed cost more than the "other" one).

I can when I see the parent's reaction to such behavior is time and time aain "whatever, she still loves me."

I think if I saw Kate make some good efforts to try to deal with her more construtively, and it still wasn't working, that would be another matter.

Cooking and watching Young and the Restless on the kitchen tv. Who should be on there but the adorable young actress who played young Dolly Parton in Coat of Many Colors, Alyvia Alyn Lind. She plays Faith Newman, one of Victors grandchildren. Love Y&R, it's still a fun show after all these years!
Anyone remember the Brooks family and Jill's big brothers Greg and Snapper?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, yes! Snapper was played by The Hoff! lol
I watched Y&R since the 80's until a few years ago. Just got tired of Victor, Phyllis, Sharon, Nick, Jack and Nicky in a marriage-divorce-marriage cycle. Jack and Nicky, Nicky and Victor, Phyllis and Jack, Jack and Sharon, Sharon and Victor, Phyllis and Victor, Nick and Phyllis, I know there are more combinations.
I remember the very first episode of the Bold and the Beautiful! The first shot is of a busy hospital hall and 2 young men, early 20's walking through and they pass by 2 young girls, one's name was Brooke and her sister, early 20's and the girls just look at them and say, There is Ridge and Thorne Forrester of Forrester Creations.
Who would of thought from that first sighting that Brooke would of married Ridge, his brother Thorne, their father, Eric. AND Brooke's mother used to date and be in love with Eric Forrester and IIRC they had a child together that got adopted out. I quit watching B&B because of the same thing as Y&R. Brook marring, Ridge, Thorne, Eric.
This past Saturday, Walmart had free shipping, no minimum purchase. I was thrilled and ordered some things and out of all of the things I ordered I ordered some crackers. I got the package yesterday and on the packing slip it said crackers, but there were no crackers. But there was something else.
A very nice Rock Star Girl makeup and candy case. 19.88. But I didn't order it. How could they put a makeup and candy case in the box instead of some old school crackers?
What am I going to do? I called Walmart customer service 3 times and got no where. I called my local Walmart and same thing. I heard that when they get things returned that they put them in the big crusher. So I didn't want that to happen and I didn't want to sell it and make money because I don't feel right about that. So I decided to find a little girl, age around 9 or 10 to give to for Christmas. I asked and asked people and finally found someone but her dd was only 7. So I gave it to her. About 30 minutes later, a lady said that she knew someone who just got a foster child that was 9 years old. And I said, I just gave it away.
I am glad the 7 year old got it, but I wish I could of given it to the 9 year old foster child, she is a little older and she is a foster child.
redbird,
I don't know about WalMart online, but our local WalMart re-sells returned items. When you return something they want to know if there's anything wrong with it, or if you just changed your mind. If there's something wrong with it, they put it aside so it won't be re-sold. But if it is OK (and not prohibited for hygiene or security reasons) they do put it back on the shelves.
A crusher? If you order from Target and Walmart online, and return them to the local stores, they will mark them way down and put them out for sale if they don't offer that particular item for sale in their stores. If those items are sold in the stores, they go on the shelf for sale. I have never heard of a crusher.
We hit 75 degrees here today. It was so bizarre seeing people doing their last minute shopping in shorts and sandals, and kids out shooting hoops in tee shirts. It can't last, but we certainly are enjoying it while it's here!
I went to TLC to see the new preview and I couldn't find it. But I watched a quick clip of when they put the tie-dyed shirts out to dry. Wow. 3 laundry hangers. They cost at least 10 bucks each. 30 dollars spent just to hang the shirts out to dry.
One tup girl said she didn't like her shirt because it came out mostly black. She said, I will never wear it and I will throw it away. How about donating it girl tup? Throwing away a perfectly good shirt. Alas.
A lot of the shirts turned out pretty good. TFW's turned out weird. Looked like a petri dish.
She was right. It needed antibiotics.
Yay! Her nursing certificate came in handy for once!
Saw the antique clip. Wow, Mady. She was just letting her mother have it left and right. Cara looked so miserable walking behind Mady walking into the store. Deanna looked much older from Wife Swap and a little crazed.
When TFW said that you just don't know how good you have it, Mady said, Well, we weren't born in the 60's like you were. TFW was true to her word, she let that one roll off her. It was great to hear TFW being told something like that, but wish it was an adult and not her teen daughter.
TFW is finally starting to reap what she has been sowing for the last 15 years. The crops are being harvested right now, they are not good crops and are going to get worse and she only has herself to blame for it.
Driving home to Louisville through one deep snow, I was pushing on through more snow with no tracks to follow. I was literally alone on the roads. Clearly I should have stayed at my house, but it was Christmas morning and I was determined to go home to KY. I was young and invincible, right? Stupid is a better term, but I digress.
Thankfully a state plow merged onto the highway, motioned for me to drive behind him, and I had clear sailing from Mt. Vernon Illinois to the Indiana border. Then he gave me a good luck toot and I carried on. Wouldn't you know, about 10 miles into Indiana, ANOTHER snow plow showed up and I got behind him for maybe 35 or 40 miles on I-64. I do believe the first plow driver CBed the second one that some woman was coming, would he look for her and plow her a path. I was thankful for my highway of angels.
Thanks, njay, I misread it. That is just awful, giving your own son a dirty look and then hitting them. That is what small kids do when they haven't been taught manners. This is why her kids are so out of control.
And I can't believe TLC is even showing this. That behavior goes on the cutting room floor. Only Heaven knows what was on the cutting room floor for all of these years. Is this the new angle? A piecing and patching mom, under horrible stress, gives dirty looks and hits her children and at the end of the show they are hugging and walking off into the sunset?
Yes, those angels on the road are there many times when we need them!
We all do dumb stuff when we are young, thinking we are invincible. I was in college on my 21st birthday. I really wanted to be home to celebrate it with my boyfriend. We had a horrible snowstorm that day but I figured I'd make the trip anyway. I mean, how bad could it be? I had a little sports car, rear wheel drive that turned into a sled when the first flake fell. To get from college to the main expressway, I had to drive through hills and winding back roads. The car wouldn't stay on the road. I took out a mailbox.
The police came to write up a report for insurance purposes, and it turned out that the officer was the brother-in-law of the homeowner. Coincidentally, he was on official police business, going in the direction I was going and offered to take me home. I left my car there and of course, accepted the ride and he got me safely to my destination, but boy, did I ever get a severe scolding by my parents for even attempting the drive home and not telling them! I never tried that again. Live and learn.
Holly jolly holiday to everyone here!
In this area a favorite meal is smoked pork chops or ham cooked with potatoes and green beans. My best friend loves it, me, not so much. One lady brings it to every. single. potluck at church and takes an empty pot home every single time. Very popular. That bean
concoction on the plate looks something like it. Something.
How it works with a piece of grilled salmon is anybody's guess. I say only at a potluck or buffet might that work for me. Or leftovers night at home.
Those things at the top of the plate? Sausages? Ditto the above. Buffet style/leftover dinner option, not part of a planned-ahead, shopped for meal, imo.
Mac and cheese and potatoes au gratin maybe?
Whatever she's eating, I'm glad to know it's more than salads.
It would be REALLY nice if Kate spent some of her Christmas with her parents, sharing a pot luck meal with family, eating off Ol' Grandma's china Christmas plates.
@pumpkinpie1970 no! My kids refuse to have turkey other than on Thanksgiving! Ham for Christmas and Easter:)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Does that mean no turkey or ham sandwiches to take to school, period? I just find it hard to believe that ALL 8 kids refuse to have turkey and ham only on holidays.

It doesn't sound kosher to me.

How long will it be until the sheep tweet her that they need the salhamling recipe ASAP, wanting to know if it's in the cookbook?

@Kateplusmy8 what are fingerling potatoes? Never heard of them

Google, Denise! Google! Recipes all over the internet for fingerlings, as well detailed description of them and what to do with the little fellows.

"I found 60-70 8mm reels of home movies at his parents house and had them converted to dvd's"

A cousin put family Xmas gatherings at my great grandmother's on DVD. It's so nice to see people who have passed on and children who have grown up and have their own children now. That's making memories, not a dumb reality show. Happy Holidays!

By George Sue Buddy, I think you're on to something with chicksalham. It could be the next big thing.

Those who decided to be with their dear departed dad today probably had to be home by 5 PM.
