Recap: Kate Plus 8: Sextuplets Turn 10 part 2: I hate Kate!

I love sports. I love them for many reasons, and one of them is every so often something really good and pure and genuine happens. Something that shows us something so wonderfully human and tangible. It makes the occasional stupid scandal forgettable, we forget about the millions of dollars going back and forth that sometimes taint the purity of the game, and it reminds us that we need professional recreation in our lives. Especially international events like this. It makes our lives fuller in any case, and certainly more fun.

One of these great moments happened this week during the phenomenal USA-Belgium World Cup game. As you probably heard, we lost. But we lost playing our absolute hearts out, sweat and blood and spit flying everywhere until the final seconds, which makes any loss that hard-fought just plain honorable.

So, we pretty much lost because some Belgian who must be about 15 years old named Kevin De Buryne scored an impossible goal late in the game, threading it through about four different defenders straight into the corner pocket. Not too long afterward the same guy had an assist for their second death-knell goal that won it.

Kevin looks remarkably like Prince Harry too, so predictably that was the perfect storm to set Twitter ablaze.

People are saying Prince Harry looks like Kevin De Bruyne on the Belgium team. I disagree. I think Kevin De Bruyne looks like Prince Harry.
— Eric Stonestreet (@ericstonestreet) July 1, 2014

Times like this Twitter is tolerable.

Anyway, turns out Harry's Doppelgänger is not just a prince but also a stand-up guy. Late in the game in what I think was extra time or almost, when all the guys out there must have been absolutely dead, Harry had a fantastic steal away from American Jermaine Jones. But while trying to kick it away, Harry accidentally kicked it straight up into Jermaine's face, absolutely pummeling him across the head.

You know those old cartoons where they get hit by a sledge hammer and then all these stars float around their head? That was pretty much Jermaine's face. He kind of fell to the ground in a heap. Jermaine just broke his nose last week so you can imagine how that must have felt. Prince Harry's expression was utter shock and sympathy. Sort of an, "Ohhhh, man that's gotta hurt!!!"

Harry quickly jogged back over to Jermaine, looking at the refs and holding up his hand to indicate the game should stop. He then squatted down, tenderly placing his hands on Jermaine's chest, and then grasped his hand in his, waiting for help to arrive.

If you've seen a soccer field it's gigantic, and help does take a good 15 to 20 seconds to get there. That must feel like an eternity when you're seeing stars. I imagine it's not as bad though when royalty is with you, holding your hand. It was an awesome moment.

Anyway, I bring this up because this is more than just what true sportsmanship should be. It's just how human beings should behave in both competitions and in life. If someone is hurt or hurting or you hurt them, not only should things stop for them, but you should go comfort and help them. This makes the world spin round in a manner that creates order out of chaos and good times even in defeat.

Last week on Kate Plus 8 when Mady was injured at Play Days, instead of holding up her hand to stop and going over to help her, Kate just kept on pummeling her until Kate won. Belgian Prince Harry's simple act of kindness and sympathy just shows how deranged Kate's thinking is. Prince Harry is a normal, nice guy. Kate on the other hand is an abnormal, cruel woman. Kate's way does not teach any life lessons like she so smugly thinks. It does not make the world go 'round. Instead it derails it and makes everybody miserable. We should all be more like how Prince Harry was just now and less like that waste of space.

Coming up on Kate Plus 8. God is giving it His best effort to stop the Hobbling Harridan with plagues of hail, wind, velcro and birds. Well, unfortunately God failed and she's still around and tweeting. He should have gone for the locusts.

May, and it's yet another new look for Kate. Maybe that's what she meant by piecing and patching. Piece a trend from October 2012 here, patch another from January 2013 in here. This one is sort of a poor man's attempt at the super dark roots look that was trendy nine months ago. Only rag mags would try to convince us that ever looked good. As usual Kate can't pull it off. To me she always looks more like a two-bit hooker on the corner of Hollywood and Vine than she does Sarah Jessica Parker. I get it. I always look like it's Halloween whenever I try anything trendy or outside the box but at least I know my own limitations and just stick mostly to Sketchers, leggings and bangs.

There's a photo of Shoka featured prominently in the background, just so we remember Shmoopy never really abused him. Oh, okay.

Credits. It's 5:45 and Shmoopy's up already and messing around with something or other in the kitchen. Are they on the first breakfast or the second? I don't care, because I'm too distracted by the clip boards attached to the back of some of the children's chairs like Doogie Howser is going to walk in at any moment and start analyzing your urine sample results.

Two questions immediately spring to mind. What the heck is on those clip boards and why are they on only some of the children's chairs? It's so flipping weird, but not much surprises me anymore about the level of psychosis in this household.

Hey, remember the awesome computer diary Doogie would type in at the end of every episode? I bet he never was careless enough to throw out those discs. He's smart.

Good gracious we certainly typed slowly in 1991, were we really that bad?

Because the internet is awesome and amazing, somebody actually collected every single diary entry from the show and put it in blog form, complete with the correct dates and everything. It includes forgotten gems like this one: "They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe if we all spent a little less time beholding -- We'd be a lot happier." F-- yeah, now that is a platitude worth repeating!

Kate gets up every single day of her life at 5:45 a.m. Not to be nit picky but she's said many times on Twitter, even as recently as a few days ago, that they sleep in to ungodly late hours when they don't have school, so I don't think that's true. But fine, what's another lie.

They spend an untoward amount of time telling us what time they get up and how the morning routine goes. The thing I fear for these kids is that they may think any of this is even remotely interesting and grow big heads. This is not interesting. They are, bless their hearts, not interesting. At all. Not even the time they get up in the morning is interesting. I'm a big fan of children understanding they are not special. The adult world is easier on people who understand they're not special. Sorry, Mr. Rogers, but it's true.

I'm partial to this guy's high school commencement speech in which he said the opposite. You, little Johnny and Suzy, hate to say it, are not special whatsoever. Now good luck to you. It went viral because it was a great message.

They text each other in the house, which I think is preferably to screaming and shouting frankly, which they also do. Kate wants an intercom system. She should get one. The house I worked in had that and I have to say it was the nicest feature about it. Instead of screaming, shouting, or wasting time searching for various kids, I'd just pick up the phone, hold five I think, and say "monkeys, come to the kitchen Admin has dinner ready." And there they'd come even if they were downstairs or outside. It makes for a more peaceful house all around.

The kids seem to like the breakfasts she makes and they talk about how healthy the food is. I don't think white bread, eggs and cheese every day is the healthiest. I think their mother is hopelessly ignorant, not healthy. The kids are still brushing their teeth in the kitchen while Kate looks on? That seems like it may have more to do with control than anything.

Oops, Kate says they've been doing this so long it runs like clockwork. They can get ready for school in 50 minutes. Well, I have to say that is very impressive. Good for them. I think it takes a normal sized family about 50 minutes if not longer. But then doesn't that prove the point things are not as hard as she makes them out to be? Seems like the kids, who despite some of their issues are overall pretty decent kids who usually aim to please, are pretty much keeping this train on the tracks with little effort from Kate anymore. So does she have it hard and is this just so difficult, or does the U.S.S. Gosselin keep a tight orderly ship that practically runs itself? I would hope the latter by now. Heh.

The producer asks the boys what does Kate do while they're at school.

Oh, okay, so he was wondering too. I'm interested in this. I've been scratching by head over this for years.

"Work," Joel says. He's been reading the script I see. Work where and doing what exactly? I ask. Ha, Joel adds that sometimes she goes back to sleep. Well yeah I figured that much, Shmoops. How nice she found some job where you can punch in and then go back to sleep. She runs errands, says Collin. Um, errands are not work. You cannot classify as "work" what everybody else has to do too whether you have a real job or not. It is rather called, "things everybody else has to do too whether you have a real job or not."

Nah, Kate's not really running as much as she used to (she must mean since Coupon Cabin stopped paying for it) because well you see, she broke her foot.

Let me stop you right there. Toe, toe, toe, toe!!! according to the children. Can I just say it's amusing how God damned stubborn she is? Even when all the kids have explained she certainly did not break her foot, she still won't let up on that story. It's remarkable.

What? Wait, she "broke" her "foot" when the perpetually coming soon "cookbook" came out and wasn't that like in September? This is May, some nine months later.

Kate also doesn't have time to run anymore anyway. That's understandable with all the "work" she does while they're at school.

Yawn, Kate likes to do everything over the top. Yawn, Kate buys paper plates. Oh this must be at Michaels where one of the shoppers there was annoyed she and the crew were blocking the aisles. Heh, I love how much most of the locals can't stand her or this mess. Poor Shmoopy's pulled in all different directions by these damn kids and some days just wishes she could throw in the towel. Being a single mom is so tough. Oh well, shouldn't have had eight kids then divorced their father and estranged all your family and friends. Shoulda bought that cactus instead.

She never meant to portray herself as super woman. Oh, that's why she joined all those smug Mommy bloggers at The Stir. So we are reassured she actually is just like any other mommy, the truth is, sniff, sometimes she cries behind closed doors.

I like when she says shit that makes her look unstable.

When she feels overwhelmed she reminds herself it's okay to mess up the important thing is you not give up. Throw that on a poster. Now imagine doing all this with a real job.

Commercials. I heart me some Blake Shelton but sadly the Pizza Hut near me closed and was replaced by a pretentious looking Jamba Juice. If you can't even make a go of a Pizza Hut and end up getting replaced by juice you might want to get out of the restaurant business.

We're back. I still think it's funny they were so cheap with the credits and little intros that they couldn't even get one updated photo of the family. Literally the Kate Plus 8 family photo has to be three years old. Mady and Cara are half the size they are now. It's tacky looking because it's so cheap.

Kate takes the kids to the mall to pick out new outfits for their party. As usual Mady and Cara are dragged along but they make it clear they were not permitted to buy anything and were bored out of their minds as am I. I still don't understand why at their ages they can't stay at home for a few hours while Kate does this nonsense with the younger kids. They seem well old enough to me.

I don't like this discussion about the younger kids and their boyfriends and girlfriends, I think these questions are embarrassing most of them, so I'm skipping this part.

Because when she's miserable she has to make everybody else miserable too, Mady tells the kids anything they've picked out is ugly.  I'm very sorry the kid is obviously struggling with many things right now and I don't see how filming is going to help anything.

The next day, and I feel like they're explaining every little mundane thing in every little mundane detail. It's not a home improvement show. It's really getting tortuous. The bottom line is, Marie Antoinette here is going to bake a cake.

Kate's off to the bus stop while the cake cools. She needs to be out the door in "32 seconds." For the longest time I thought her odd times (like awake at 6:02 a.m.) were done just to be cute or funny. Now I think in her rigid mind it actually is 32 seconds to her just like it was 246 toothpicks and four left in the box to Rain Man. Maybe for work she could be a timekeeper of some sort. Maybe working for the railroad as a dynamite detonator. I like Westerns.

Suddenly a huge hail storm rolls in. Sort of. It wasn't exactly anywhere near her house but it did hit the bus stop. Okay those are scary. We got those maybe once every couple years back East and they actually are quite dangerous when it's happening, if you are out in it. If you're inside, using your brain and staying put it'll be fine. A really bad one like this may only happen once every ten years. They can also really dent your car or cause other damage. Kind of funny they use footage of the storm from The Reading Eagle since that newspaper absolutely hates Kate Gosselin and her ten years of scams. Heh.

I don't like parents who freak their kids out. We should not pass our fears down to our children. Kate is at the bus stop clapping at the kids to come on, it's dangerous. Well, the storm is over now and it's sunny, so I don't quite get that. They have plenty of time to get to safety should it start up again. She hurries them into the van in an absolute panic. The problem with this attitude is that in the span of 30 seconds you may have just made your child afraid of hailstorms for decades to come, and unable to handle them rationally and reasonably. It's okay to have a healthy fear of danger but it's not okay to deal with that fear by panicking. The sad thing is I think she thinks behaving this way makes her look like a caring and protective mother. Sigh.

They head to the pet store to get some beta fish for the party. Hm, I don't see anybody asking the parents of their guests if sending them home with a live animal is okay. You can't have a carnival without winning fish, Kate explains.  Gaa, these people. I suppose these are the same people that can't have a circus without abused animals, or Sea World without orcas who live in a small swimming pool as their life until they finally snap and eat their trainer. The tide is changing in remarkable ways, and these people should know they will be left behind. It's happening.

"This is starting to feel real," Kate says dramatically. The... party? Good grief you would think she is talking about having her firstborn child or earning her PhD without the D. It's just a stupid birthday party that was pretty much catered for them anyways.

Commercials. The most random people are able to get reality shows. Leah Remini, really? I mean I like her just fine but not enough to care what she does on a day to day basis.

We're back, and Kate is whipping up some frosting that has 2,000 pounds of butter. Well, then she could say it has a ton of butter and actually not be exaggerating. The layered cake looks good actually.  It's moist and has a good color, although someone on the blog here pointed out it didn't really rise. True. Here we go with yet another long, mundane explanation. I'll skip this.

Zorro, who apparently is quite a fine method actor, creeps slowly toward the cake. Yes, he's out of his cage and supposed to be perched on some little tree thing on the counter.

"Stay!" Kate commands. I don't know if birds respond to things like "stay." Uh, maybe she should put him in his cage?

Finally his big moment to show his chops, er, rather beak, is here and he flies into the cake and takes a bite.

Kate is shocked that this happened. Shocked I tell ya. Lol. You place your bird two feet away from the cake. He is eyeing the cake like he really wants it. He is even walking toward the cake. And you're shocked that this happened. She's not exactly the best at reading body language now is she?

You know, he only got a tiny piece of it. I probably would have cut that piece out and figured out a way to replace it with frosting somehow and not say anything. But because Kate is 12 and can't handle anything more complicated than a shoebox, she cries and bemoans how she can't serve it now and the party could be ruined and what will she do about the cake?

Brilliant screen writing here and Zorro hit all his marks.

For someone doing it 99% alone, there sure are a heck of a lot of workers around doing various things for the party. The tent people show up and could you put it a little to the left, now a little to the right, now do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around, perfect.

The "surprise" for the kids is here. It came on a flatbed truck and Kate shuts it away in the barn. Based on that information I can't rule out that it could still be a Jonas brother. This is Kate we're talking about after all.

Kate's friends all live out of state, which is both funny and odd. Jamie flew in for the weekend to help out. Good ole Jamie, I remember her and Ashley and how much Kate pissed them off on the Yellowstone trip. It just so happened Jamie's kids would be away that weekend. With their father whom we're told they live with? Just saying. I always found it ironic that for all the hate and judgment toward Jon, none of Kate's fans judge Jamie or ask why her children don't live with her full time either. I have no idea what Jamie's situation is but there are dozens of reasons that custody might not be balanced that have nothing to do with whether one is a good or bad parent. Because I have no hate in my heart I've always given Jamie the benefit of the doubt on that. I just like the hypocrisy.

Jamie understands Kate. I'm glad somebody does. They are sooo similar, says Kate. Why, they even got divorced in the same year, "ironically." Hey, Alanis, that's not ironic, that's just a coincidence or perhaps even poor misfortune.

Nothing that happened on or off camera has affected this sisterhood of the traveling pants. And that's the sign of a true friend, says Kate. No Kate, that's the sign of a true enabler who I guess doesn't have the self-esteem to insist she be treated with kindness and respect by her so-called BFF.

God tries again with a freak wind storm, interrupting the family as they are trying to paint signs for the carnival. Just to drive the point home, God blows the papers straight into the heated pool. Lol, God.

"Can somebody shut the pool gate at least!" Kate screeches.

You shut it, bitch. You're the closest. She finally does.

What's funny is in the midst of all this you see what looks like a cameraman and a producer running away from all this and not helping. Not that the Jane Goodalls of reality T.V. should be interfering with what's going on, but it's hysterical the way Kate is screeching for help and production just runs away.

You know what's awesome about this? The kids love it. They fish the papers out of the pool, and Alexis blurts how funny it was, like a word scramble. Kate of course is beside herself. God owes me a perfect day tomorrow, Kate says to God as she points at the sky. So she really does have a direct line to Him like her letters to Jesus in her book. I wonder how one gets chosen for that.

I like kids and I hate adults. Adults who act like this anyway. The kids will remember this forever and get a chuckle out of it forever. Lighten the F up.

It's getting late and everyone is inside now. Kate is still pacing and strung out. The kids are fine, laughing and playing with their iPads. Why is it always the girls who are playing with the iPads and the boys watching, may I ask? Is that an iPad mini in addition to their regular gadgets? Sheesh.

They eat the cake that Colin Firth over there jumped on/the producer threw him on. Kate has to trust the party will come together tomorrow but she doesn't really think it will. Well, that's kind of rude to the catering company who did it all. I'm sure they know full well what they're doing.

Thirty-six long minutes in and it's finally time for the party at last.

"One person, too much to do," Kate says. She's just such a tool. Not to even mention the catering company there is proof did it all, what about Jamie (and as you will see Deanna) who flew in, the twins and their friends who did help seemingly for free as far as I can tell, and the birthday kids themselves? They all helped a ton! Like 2,000 pounds of butter a ton. Wtf, I don't understand her and why she always has to marginalize anybody else who busts their butt for her.

At the last minute Kate is able to get a carnival cake that looks like a big top. It's cute. It was probably ordered three weeks ago by production.

What is with this episode? Now we're spending what feels like ages watching them stuff the pinatas. This really has gotten to be just like watching old boring home movies. I can't believe anyone in their right mind thinks this should be a weekly series. With the exception of Zorro's great escape and the water boarding she did to the poor thing afterward, there is nothing remotely resembling an interesting plot here. They got nothing.

There's literally people everywhere helping out. People setting up the various stands, Mady and Cara's friends helping out, other unidentified adults doing things. I swear to god for about ten seconds I thought that blond chick with the shower wet hair and pink shorts was the new nanny. Then she spoke and I realized it's Shmoopy herself! She's so skinny. Who is she? What is she?

Kate and Jamie are setting up something or other with a staple gun and Kate is out of staples and doesn't know how to change them. For someone who does it 99% herself she sure is helpless. What did she do when she was out of staples before and she was doing it 99% herself? Maybe just stand there and hold it together with her fingers until the 1% gets there?

I don't understand the point of a party if you're going to be running ragged and stressed out beyond belief the whole time, but that's just me.

I love the two second clip of Kate giving orders to the twins' friends. Their body language is so 13. The in one ear out the other look, sure Kate yep no worries, got it. And then they're off to talk about boys and lipgloss.

"Once I mentally envision something, I just have to make it happen," Kate says, gesticulating so we see her nails.

Actually she says it more like this, "Once I mentally envision something, I just have to make it happen???"

I imagine around about 2003 that's exactly what went down???

The kids are on the couch playing with the clapperboard, shouting various things. It's kind of annoying, no offense, though it's not their fault. Obviously the producers made them do this and some of the kids, like Joel, don't look like they think this is that fun. Oh by the way Hannah smacks Joel across his cheek in the middle of this, but it's Hannah so don't worry it's okay. The clapperboard has some interesting information on it, like some of the crew members and that it was "take two" of this "reality show." So we were wondering if the crew is really the same crew Kate says they love and missed. I don't have the skills of Nev or many of the posters here, but I did a little poor man's sleuthing on IMDB to see what I could come up with.

I see two names on the clapperboard. One is C. McCarthy-Miller. I pretend Max is sitting just to my right holding his stupid little canon video camera as I pull up google.

I quickly discover "C." is some guy named Clark, and he has been part of all of two episodes, not counting these, of Kate Plus 8, as a production assistant and as a photographer. In 2011, folks. "Ohhhhh, that could be him!" Max always says, even if it's totally obvious that is him. J. Bromiley is also on the clapperboard, and that's some man named Jack, a camera man who is credited with only one episode of Kate Plus 8. Also one of the Australia episodes way back in 2011.

Assuming IMDB is correct, and I have no reason to think it's not, how could you possibly form attachments to these Clark and Jack guys and call them your daddy and family after two episode three years ago? Do the kids even remember them? When you look at IMDB, you see over a hundred people have worked in production on this show. Even if you don't count people who sit in editing bays and don't interact with the kids, it's still a ton. They have been through a whopping sixteen producers. So this whole thing about how this is such a close knit family is utter nonsense, of course.

The size of their crew is normal. This is how Hollywood works. There is constant turnover as you move on to other projects or projects and contracts overlap making you unavailable even if you wanted to be on the crew. For Kate to put forth to her dumb fans it's anything different than everybody else's television show is lunacy. And it's dangerous. How could one parent possibly vet over a hundred people to any reasonable person's satisfaction? You can't, which is how Bill Blankinship slipped through. He's still there on IMDB the proud editor of over thirteen episodes, it's not like they can remove his name just because he's a sex offender now, and still has two more years of probation to serve.

Kate puts on a clown wig and nose, and pairs it with a strapless dress that looks better suited for the beach. In this getup she sort of reminds me of Carol Burnett's Miss Hannigan, naturally the best Miss Hannigan there ever was. She was an ever-evolving mix between trendy and slutty, sober and drunk, lovesick and bitter. And she was a master scammer too and used children to her benefit. Carol nearly stole the show. This look of Kate's would be complete if she would just carry around a bottle of Sake.

You won't regret watching this clip of the great Carol, it's just incredible.

Lol, I love Mady. She is finally old enough to stop Kate in her tracts. When Kate tries to say she promised the kids she would wear it Mady immediately jumps in and says give me an ever loving break they did not want you to wear that and mortify them I saw the whole thing! Heh!

Oh, there's Deanna, another enabler and out-of-state BFF, wandering in the background carrying a present. Yet another person around to help and take the immense burden off Shmoops.

I should be shaking my head at how disrespectful the kids are about this, but in this case Kate deserves it. The clown thing is creepy, Leah says. Yes it sure is.

There's very few kids at this "carnival" but tons of adults working, plus Mady's friends. It does look good and authentic, though pretty juvenile, with popcorn and cotton candy and games.

Mady says Kate scares her friends. Yikes, I don't think she was joking about that one. Awkward.

Wow some of these games are pretty lame. Pin the nose on the clown, really? I don't know if kids in 2014 would like these.

Ugh, the horrific fish game.

Mady helps run this game, and bemoans the children's "sins of impatience." Whoa okay, sister wife!

Kate says the bowls did not have a fish in them, but I can see several betas in the bowls right there swimming while the kids are throwing balls at them, so W....T...F!!!

So for anyone who still thinks this game is all fun and dandy, I want you to imagine yourself sitting in a shallow kiddie pool all afternoon in the heat. Now imagine as you are lounging in this pool, somebody is dropping giant ping pong balls three times your size on your head, repeatedly. Then you get sent home with some kid who either forgets about you and leaves you in the car to roast, or puts you on the dining room table in that same kiddie pool and tries to remember to feed you every once in awhile because the family was neither expecting you nor was asked to have you over, so nobody else wants to care for you. Fun!

It just occurred to Kate that if any of her children actually win the fish, which several of them do, she'll have more pets in the house.

I love that the narcissist is only capable of understanding this and what a bad idea it is when it's happening to her. I.e. when her kids win and are ready to set up shop with their new pet in her house of horrors. She didn't even consider what she was dumping on other parents when she set up this game in the first place, and she still doesn't seem to think about that. Remarkable and fascinating.

I have to say I do kind of like that parents can come to this too and that there's a ton of space for them to socialize. It's fun to share in your child's fun without making them feel like you're a pain or smothering.

The velcro wall is cool and somehow seems quite fun. It does what you expect. You wear a big velcro suit, jump and get stuck to the wall. There are literally like four different workers with name tags helping to run it, so I don't think Kate is doing any of this all by herself. Kate does the velcro wall several times because it's all about her.

The piñata has nothing to do with a carnival and is totally off the theme so for that reason I don't like it. This is a perfect example of Kate really having no idea how to throw a classy, themed party. But as long as the kids enjoy it fine. Collin says something about how they hit the piñata but no one would want to hit Mommy. Obviously he hasn't found this blog yet.

A long and boring explanation about having difficulty lighting the candles on the cake. This show has been boring for awhile but I never remember it being this mind numbing. It's like they didn't even try.

Hannah violently pushes Collin away from the cake with an accusation he spit on it while he was blowing out his candles (hey it happens, don't like spit don't do candles), which I never saw, and naturally, there are no consequences.

The kids really liked their party so that's nice. Why couldn't the families just pull their cars up into the driveway and park on the grass? Why do they have to take a shuttle? Seems like an unnecessary expense for a piecer and patcher.

Now the big surprise. Hey that's not a Jonas! Instead it's a John Deere gatar four-wheeler thing that lots of big properties have. Oh, something to help them with choring! Yeaaa!!!

Collin is onto this immediately, lol. Well this is just to drive down to take care of the chickens. Yep.

Oh my god this thing is huge and powerful. Seeing it up close like this it's more immense and scary than I thought. Seemingly without any instruction Joel hops right in and starts driving. The rest of the kids drive it as well. Somebody posted that John Deere recommends that only children 16 and older drive this honking thing. Oh good grief. I would have preferred a Jonas brother.

I have never heard someone go on so long about what a birthday is really about. Good heavens it's not her birthday.

As usual very little of it is on point and the rest is in outer space. Succinct shmoops is not! It's finally over and up next another show about dwarfs? Well I guess they don't have a family yet who subscribes to the philosophy that you should not modify your home to accommodate your short stature because the world is not going to do that for you, so I guess that's new. This pretentious couple calls themselves the Brad and Angelina of the dwarf world. Yeah and I'm the Natalie Portman of the blogging world.

A couple final thoughts on what I hope is the first and only update special. I hope to never have to recap this show or anything these children are on ever again. (Don't worry, I will happily recap Celebrity Apprentice!)

It's more clear than ever before these past two weeks were as much about Kate getting a platform to play celebrity than it has a single thing to do with wanting what's best for her kids. Most of this episode was just Kate. Kate baking, Kate bird watching, Kate velcroing, and most of all Kate yapping about all things Kate. This obsessive need to be the center of attention even so far as on a nationwide stage is a dangerous one, and has only led to bad things for these poor kids.

Mady, Cara, Aaden, Alexis, Collin, Hannah, Joel and Leah are both her sword and her shield. She uses them to slash through all the red tape and get what she wants, like this very update special and many other things we well know of. And if anyone ever tries to question her, they are her human shields to hide behind. After all, you'd have to be one bitter and ugly person to attack a mother with eight sweet babies, right? Anyone who still believes this needs to seriously think about what the morally right thing is to do in a situation where two competing values butt heads. Those values of course would be, being kind, understanding and deferential to the sacredness that is motherhood, versus the promotion of a child's overall best interest and the protection of children from abuse and exploitation.

Of course in my book, the protection of children is paramount. In fact, if you don't know, like many other bloggers who have passed by the Realitytvkids porch, I too have dedicated my career to working on just such child abuse cases and much worse. You can't imagine what I've seen. You don't want to. I certainly believe very strongly in parental rights and would cut off my right arm to be sure someone is getting their due process, but at the same time I subscribe to the idea that sometimes it takes a village to protect a child. I believe the protection of children from abuse and exploitation is a matter of public concern if it has indeed crossed that line into abuse and exploitation, as I believe it has here. I could care less if a mother, or father, or anybody else gets their feelings hurt in the process. That does not matter when kids are being abused. I believe this is how it should be.

Oh, and my replacement keyboard works like a dream so I can say it without problems: I HATE Kate. Have a wonderful Fourth everyone. The porch is open and the rumspringa spiked lemonades are flowing, on me. You are in good hands with the blog girls and pool boys and I'll see you soon!

I agree with you PoohBear but i also agree with catfish. TFW didn't follow the proper procedures to notify support about the tweet however there was a time when she would tweet something like this and her handlers would make sure that it got done STAT. Disaster? What happened? I watched the Catfish ep. she was in and there was no disaster. Ms. Thoms was fooled into thinking someone died but how is that a disaster? The catfish in that episode didn't do anything to Ms. Thoms except befriend her. There was no disaster.

&&&

Did we watch the same episode? Traci was incredibly emotionally manipulated by her catfish. The situation had obviously greatly disturbed her. Ultimately it was upsetting to her catfish as well. That is a disaster in my mind. I think emotional upheavals can be just as upsetting as something physical or otherwise. This was certainly not something Traci could very easily shrug off and say "oh well". No, she got invested. That is her fault too but it doesn't change the fact that it was disastrous for her--emotionally.

No kidding! While reading her letter to a JUDGE I found myself laughing and then brought back to earth, reminding myself that SHE IS SERIOUS! Talk about ''off''!! !!!!!!

The letter says it all.

Like a judge would even care. It's not a sentencing hearing or something where Nichole Simpson's family gets to write the judge and tell him how much this has ruined their lives.

Somebody watches too much TV. A judge would throw that letter out as an inappropriate ex parte communication, lol

If a client of mine wrote that I'd say noooo we're NOT showing that to the judge unless you want to hurt your case. heheheh

She did WAY more than that. Among other things, she conjured up a whole other person out of thin air and then killed them off to solicit sympathy from Traci. That is absurd and disastrous on an epic level.

This is just a guess, but perhaps the account is still there because RTing to @support is NOT the proper way to report abuse and since HRH can't be bothered to follow proper channels twitter has essentially "round filed" her complaint.

You're right, that's not the proper way to report an account (her fans probably reported it correctly for her though). IMO his account is still there because he didn't actually violate any rules.

My gosh! That catfish of Tracy's should of been brought up on charges and arrested. She was a fraud! She put Tracy through hello. It was crazy and very hurtful. I can't believe she has gotten mixed up with this Step psycho, just right after the Catfish show.

kate better shut her twitter down, like now, before it is too late, but I am afraid that it is too late. The man from PA and Step and others would convince a normal person to shut it down.

Just shut it down not just for you and your protection but shut it down for the protection of your kids!

Sleepless In Seattle said...

The catfish in that episode didn't do anything to Ms. Thoms except befriend her.

-----------------------

No. She did more than that. She deceived her. I don't know about you, but I certainly wouldn't want a friend I couldn't trust. It that's "befriending," I would pass on it. With someone that unstable, who knows what could happen? The show was a study in obsessive celebrity worship, and what could happen if boundaries are crossed. Think Selena.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I repeat Traci's catfish conjured up a person out of thin air, was posing as that person AND as "herself" and fostered a relationship with Traci such that Traci really cared about both of them. She was really doing a double catfish.

Then, knowing full well how fond Traci was of the made up person, the catfish made the other person get sick and DIE. She even sent Traci photos of the funeral (which was really I think a funeral of an extended family member).

Being someone's friend means you don't give them fake people to care about them knowing they care about them "OFF" THEM like it's a T.V. series. I'm just scratching my head how this can be brushed off as well that catfish didn't do anything but be Traci's friend. That's not what happened, and maybe that's why you don't think it was disastrous. It was. It's pretty much the sickest thing in the world to manipulate somebody by creating a fake death. While Traci bears some responsibility for encouraging an obsessed fan like this, it does not excuse this fan's atrocious and manipulative behavior.

Oh, and she was doing it to others, like Traci's business partner and another small time celeb, but others weren't really engaging as much as dumb Traci was. However they too were emotionally disturbed by it. This was nothing minor.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

It's pure luck that Traci's catfish did not turn violent when Traci called her out. The next person may. These people have a lot of issues and it's only a matter of time before she hits upon a fan who is more than just creepy and actually is DANGEROUS.

Traci has everything in the world going for her. Why does she need to do all this kind of personal interacting with fans? I understand she feels social media is important but that doesn't mean she can't impose boundaries for herself. She was and continues to be way too personal, way too BFF. This sends the wrong message to fans who can't handle that. There's nothing wrong with communication lines with fans but you need to keep it professional and relatively impersonal. Once you start crossing the line as of course Kate has many times, you put yourself in potential danger and even death. This is not being melodramatic, it's just a fact that many celebs have been hurt or killed by fans.

PJ's momma said...

Maybe Traci did distance herself but doesn't 'own' the facebook page. Notice she hasn't said anything on that facebook page. Our friend is in a metal band that fired their lead singer after 30 years, and they had to go to court to get all rights to the band name and future merchandise and social media. Even though they won, the old singer is still using the social media page. The attorneys are the only winners here. The band knows this and started a new page from scratch, which confused a lot of fans. It has been a huge legal mess.

Love that EM Tanner has taken up for Robert's book. Kate makes enemies along the way and then it's karma time. And this kind of word by mouth promotion is great for Robert. There is so much material in the book that I figure this will continue to drip, drip, drip for Kate. Her reputation is DOA now for anything in the entertainment industry.

I do not do Twitter but even I read their rules about reporting an account and I cannot believe how freakin' lazy she is. This @support stuff must be a signal for a minion to do her work.

I saw on Radar that for their Throwback Thursday they had pictures of Jon from high school just showing him as a normal kid.

If that Rosie clause is true, ABC must have been getting pressure to hire some no talent reality show women and Rosie said no way. I would bet Kate's people were in the fray. Good for Rosie! I'm sure both Kate and Kris Jenner are lobbying for a seat, and either one of them would do nothing but cheapen the show. I've never been pregnant, but I have absolutely no problems with stores like Wal-mart and others that have designated special parking near the doors for pregnant women. It must be difficult to do a lot of walking when you're 8 months gone and big as a house. In the meantime, the rest of the family has to eat, other kids go back to school, husbands and children need clothing. Those of you who want to go back to pioneer days -- do you know the maternal death rate? The infant death rate? Do you seriously want to go back to that?

Speaking of handicapped parking. I need a handicapped spot (and yes, I do have the appropriate parking certificate) due to knee and respiratory problems. Picture this (I feel like Sophia on "Golden Girls" LOL) -- revamped and refurbished strip mall. Brand new Wal-Mart on one end. Restaurant, very popular with senior citizens on the other end. In between, several small shops and a large Big Lots store. NO handicapped parking except in front of Wal-Mart. Large parking lot, hundreds of spaces, and the only handicapped parking is at one end. Very frustrating if you can't walk far without difficulty.

She must have things she can still use, stroller, swing, etc. It is our custom that when we go visit the new baby we bring a baby gift, and a small toy or book for the older siblings. Bitchy, no I didn't say I want to go back to pioneer days. Just making a half-assed analogy regarding how coddled the younger generations are these days. I'm sure there are many, many expectant mothers out there who may need help if they're suffering complications from their pregnances. Had a family member who was. She and baby are fine now. I'm not talking about them.

I just am always seeing exercise tips, exercise videos, healthy eating tips, on and on and on, for expectant mothers. Aren't they healthier now than a few generations ago? Can't they walk from a parking lot to a store with all that exercise, yoga, proper dieting, vitamins, etc? LOL

Vanessa said...

I respectfully disagree, being 8 months pregnant does not equate being handicapped. If you can walk, then you should walk. It's a parking lot, not a marathon. Take your time, it'll do your body some good. If your pregnancy makes it so difficult that you can't walk a few feet, then take someone with you and have them drop you at the door.Walking inside those big box stores is just as demanding as getting to and from your
car. Reminds me a bit of pos parking in the fire lane.

I am so glad Radar ran the story about Jon being a normal kid in school and that he was the soccer goalie on the soccer team that won the state championship! It must cut Jon to the bone that his kids are not in sports like they should be because of that controlling ironed fisted W.

I believe if the tup girls were in t-ball, basketball that they would learn to get along with others, with each other and they could get their frustrations out on the court or field and they would be much better off.

On Inside Edition, the correspondent, Meagan, did a work out with Stone Cold Steve Austin and had to do squat lifts with a 50 lb. bag filled with something. Looked like a big pillow, but it looked exactly like the chicken feed bags that the boys have to lug to the chicken coop.

Sports cost money, she is not going to pay. Chickens lay eggs, she sells, she makes money, and doesn't have to pay the kids to do all of the hard work. For SHOW on the show, they show that W picking up a bag of chicken feed like I described and walking with it with a I can't believe this thing is so heavy look and was walking toward the chicken coop. She wanted to show that SHE does it all.

You can deflect till pigs fly, W, but we ain't buying your sob stories.

We were having a discussion, not a "lecture." It's what we always do. If you don't want people to disagree with you then don't completely misrepresent what happened.

You are free to blow off this girl as nothing, just as much as we are free to disagree with you and take it very seriously and have serious concerns for Traci and her ongoing boundaries issues. I don't see that they cooked up drama about the situation. It is what it is, a very emotionally manipulative and dysfunctional young woman who caused Traci a great deal of anguish. Traci reminds me a lot of Kate in terms of her interactions with fans, Traci is just a nicer and kinder version. But she's dumb as all get out when it comes to fan interactions.

I agree with the sentiments about a coddled generation and it has gotten to the point where it's very concerning. It's not really about one parking spot but about how coddled and protective we've become across the board in general. If you stripped it away would we know how to live?

I've been enjoying my trip out of town and I decided for "fun" to try a little game where I don't rely on my phone's GPS at all. Sadly enough this was a scary prospect for me. At first. I've been in many no service areas where that's not a problem but even in service areas I don't turn it on. I have physical maps and did some prep work ahead of time to plan my routes. I've had to stop and ask people how to get somewhere. But I wanted to see if I could do it just like we used to without Siri telling me every turn and roundabout and how many miles until I get there. I've enjoyed it more I think, just sort of watching for signs as my guide and enjoying the broad stretches of road and not knowing that it's 9.8 miles until my next turn. But anyway a lot of people have talked about how GPSes have made us helpless.

Self-sufficiency, responsibility and making your way without having to depend on others unless truly necessary are things I value very highly, and that seems to be eroding away. With it, we could be losing some basic skills we may need when technology fails us. There are some people who truly need help, and efforts should be expended toward them, not able bodied, healthy, capable adults.

Maybe she had back issues throughout, but she never mentioned that. She just had someone taking videos of her riding these carts with stupid looks on her face (or laughing) and posting them over and over, even when she was barely showing. And of course she registered for things like matching furniture, a $500 rocking chair for her, a new camera, a $250 breast pump, a $250 baby monitor....and once again, all those things went unpurchased. There are several reasons why most of the G kids are not in sports: costs money for the kids (so less for Kate); too much traveling to practices and games (Kate apparently would never lower herself to carpool plus she lives away from the other kids); no control over the adults and team mates. I think the majority of it has to do with controlling who the kids have contact with. They seem to run with a very, very small group of friends. Kate would call this protecting their privacy, I call it keeping a lid on a G kid blabbing or reaching out to a trusted adult.

Of course I am assuming that Cara is the one who does sports since that is the only one she has tweeted about. I sincerely hope I am wrong and the tups, who want to, play on teams. My kids were not athletic but we let them try everything and it was a wonderful experience for them. Builds their self-confidence. Hey, I think I just added another reason why they don 't do sports.

How sad is it that you have to lie and blow smoke up your idol's ass and stroke her ego, with the slim hope to maybe get a response?

OT but I need to vent. Just got back from the grocery store. The DJ was talking about a guy who has raised $30,000 to buy ingredients to make potato salad. He used a fundraiser website, "Kickstart," and asked for $5 donations and things went viral. He's not doing it for charity, just wanted to make some potato salad. He's now going to have a potato salad party on Labor Day when the fundraiser ends.
******
I saw that yesterday. I told DH that we're becoming a nation of beggars with our hands out.
Fund me, give me, kickstart me.

When did pride, self-sufficiency and hard work become a thing of the past?

I don't think that guy has any designs on giving the money to charity- maybe a fraction.

Joy, I wondered if the person I mentioned DID have a pain issue, but if she did, she spent so much time taking selfies and videos of herself in carts, she didn't have time to mention it! There was also a picture of her mother pushing her in a wheelbarrow at Home Depot. Yep, she jumped into a wheelbarrow so they could take a picture. Her sister is worse - pictures and videos of herself inside a Target cart, screaming down the aisles while she stands up, like she is car surfing. Her dad took the video. In a store. Isn't that cute? Isn't that special?

I agree completely. Nowadays it's, I want so I deserve it. I'm so tired of the phrase, "You deserve it." It's so overused. Social media is a great enabler in these "potato salad" situations. Go online, ask for money and see what happens.

I didn't hear the guy was doing anything for charity. Maybe he'll feel obliged to eventually though.

I have a bridal shower/wedding/baby shower story:

A few years ago a childhood friend was getting married. All the plans were "top secret"! Not a detail was to be disclosed (as if the world cares what color the centerpiece flowers are?!).

She asked me to be in her wedding party. She lived in our home town, so I had to rent a hotel room for every time I had to come in (fittings, showers, etc). I spent a LOT of $$ on dress, shoes, etc.

The bridal shower we had to contribute a couple hundred dollars check for the gift.

All in all, I spent THOUSANDS to be in this girl's wedding. I was only making 30k, so it was pathetic (should'a opened my mouth!).

The wedding was over the top! A band AND a DJ (when the band was on break), ice sculpture(s). Insane!

Fast forward 1.5 years she's expecting...in more ways than one! she EXPECTED her bridesmaids host the shower! I was still recovering from the wedding!

So many things on the registry, not only for a newborn, but for when the kid was a toddler. I was like...what's gonna happen when the kid is 18? Are we on the hook for college, too??!!

Not to be petty, but when I got married she sent a gift...but it was cheap. They could well afford it, chose not to.

Ugh. I don't even talk to her anymore.

Funny, on Access Hollywood, they're talking about Rosie coming back to The View, and it seems like it's a pretty done deal.
They also said that there's talk about filling the "conservative" seat with... Sarah Palin!
I'm not commenting one way or another about Palin filling in a seat, but if she did, can you imagine Kate's chances of ever being on that show again?
Oh, those burned bridges are adding up.

I don't think what we're talking about is what Socrates was talking about. I think there is a fine line about being careful not to have a rosy memory of childhood and lament "kids today" just like our grandparents did and their grandparents and their grandparents, versus having some concerns about a cultural shift.

This is more than that. This is a cultural shift to a very coddled and babied generation, as well as a level of entitlement that is very uncouth. Social media might be contributing to it, reality T.V. and the selfie, I don't know.

We're not talking about spoiled kids. We're talking about society as a whole, adults and children alike. I think it is always a good idea to ask if the progression of society is going in the right direction.

Definitely, I don't think we should stay the same. Society should always progress. The question is, is this good progression? Maybe this is the direction we should go. Maybe this is good for us. But if it's not, we'll regret not saying something now about it. We need to be talking it out as it happens here and elsewhere, as many other people have before us, so that a free discussion can happen and ideas and progression can hopefully shift if this is not correct.

That reminds me of a documentary recommendation called Tiny: A Story about Living Small about extreme downsizers who have rejected the Big Mac trends. Take a look at it and see what you think. It's on netflix streaming! We need people like this even extremists to make us think and question current trends.

I was in a wedding where I was TOLD how much $$ I had to kick in for the bridal shower.
I was not included in the plans AT ALL.

Admin, I agree. There will always be complaining about the new generation but there are definite differences.

As a mom with kids and part of popular mom boards I can say we all agree with many of your points.

There is also a reactionary movement called free range parenting which back in the seventies would be called parenting.

So while there are always some that are selfish and devoid of basic manners and always have been, I actually think social media has made it seem like an epidemic. We don't generally discuss the lovely wedding or practical baby shower because it isn't nearly as interesting as the bride who charged people at the door.

Similar to people believing the world is more dangerous today because of the 24 hour news cycle and sharing of horrific crimes on social media, it's a misconception.

There will always be brats and narcissists and greedy people (TFW) but we all get to share and laugh/cry and before we know it we think it's an epidemic.

Time will tell. I worried about those raised a decade before and now that they are in the workforce I've been surprised by their work ethic and innovation.

Haha, I just perused the latest reviews on Amazon, the sheep don't even bother to put on the wolf's clothing. Every 1 star review begins with "I'm no Kate fan but............" One said "and he calls himself a professional writer." No, no he never said that. What he actually said was that he is NOT a professional writer and that the book is rough around the edges. They also nitpick about his spelling errors when he calls Kate out for hers. Robert never claimed to be a perfect speller, Kate did. Big difference. One said "yawn, normal everyday discipline issues, big deal about nothing. Gee, I can't say it ever crossed my mind to hold my child's face over a pile of dog crap for not letting the dog out. Or shoving one out into the cold for not shutting a door tight. That is not normal discipline and if it was Jon being accused of this, they would be stroking out. Another ewe said Robert just makes up the book as he goes along. Sure, that's the ticket! Because he's not in debt enough from the last time Kate play-sued him, he's going to make up complete lies so she has actual grounds to do it again.
These people are dumber than rocs.

P A Dutch mom: I think the sports & other activities, most everyone here is referring to are the ones you do after school, not during school or part of PE class. Like the sports you go to practice for and then play another team from another school. Besides sports, dance classes, Girl scouts, Boy scouts etc, there park district has activities,, or community center does too. , not stuff you do during school. When I was in school we had to play/do sports. PE was a class, we had to take, just like 4 years of swimming, which was part of the PE class. They did have competitive sport swimming, which they competed against other schools. I was in varsity bowling, and we played again other teams from other school in the city. Cara plays on the school team, that plays other schools. Kate is too lazy to put the tups in anything, unless TLC pays for it, and all 6 can be in it. Can you actually see Kate driving all 8 kids to each of their sport or activity. Socrates, you raise an interesting point. We do tend to focus on the negative instead of the positive. In fact, all this made me think again of my old church. We were ushers and our volunteer coordinators sent out an email one day, saying their daughter's wedding was that Friday and we were all invited and welcome to come because we were their church family. I thought that was nice, even though I had never met the daughter, until the next paragraph: They are registered at....and they provided links to the registry. WHAT? These are the parents - what on earth are they thinking?
But we have attended some lovely weddings too, and the simpler, the lovelier. One cousin on his side got married in CA and a lot of people went down there. It was outside at a golf course and the clubhouse did the reception. Nothing fancy, but was it ever fun. Everyone truly enjoyed being with each other and celebrating. It was so great! Their registry was so simple. We bought the 'signature frame' and had it sent to them so they could use it at the reception. Sure enough, it was set up with a sharpie so people could record their well wishes on the matt.
My cousin's daughter got married and it was also very simple. Our whole family chipped in and brought the food. Before the reception, people were arriving with giant pans of enchiladas, the meat shredded from a whole turkey an aunt cooked, giant pots of beans, stacks of tortillas, etc. The food was great and it was another wonderful family affair with 'laugh til your tummy hurts' moments. Those are the great moments of life - simple but genuine joy!

It seems that every generation has bemoaned the one coming after them, seeing some negatives along with the progress. I am more concerned with the world we are leaving for future generations, and the pollution, extreme weather, and other conditions they will have to deal with. I'm sad to think that the clean water I took for granted as a child is a thing of the past in many places, as well as clean air, open space, and other natural resources.

Some kids are coddled. Many others are not. I am concerned that younger generations are not taught to think for themselves. One example: Fast food restaurants or any store with cash registers. Back in the dark ages, when I got my first job as a store clerk, I was taught how to manually count back change. The register did not tell me how much to give the customer. To this day, I always calculate my change in my head, to be sure the store clerk is correct.

People don't often pay with cash anymore. Cash registers tally up the total, the clerk punches in the amount tendered and the machine tells them what amount to give back, if any. Then they hand you a wad of money and don't even count it back to you.

Similar example as given by Admin - if you have a Smart phone, you've got GPS. I love that feature on my phone, especially if I get lost in an unfamiliar area. (Happens to me a lot, no sense of direction.) But it also stops me from paying close attention to the route I followed, so the next time I go back, I don't really recall the directions.

The way I see it, it's survival of the fittest. Those who continue to use their brain for critical thinking, for thinking outside the box, will be better able to adapt to changing conditions. Those who don't think for themselves will not fare as well.

Today's up and coming generation have all kinds of personalities, including those who are high achievers, those who are slackers, those who can't think for themselves, and those who will make some amazing advances for us. About a year ago, I saw a young man on the Stephen Colbert show who had invented a simple and inexpensive way to test for pancreatic cancer. Jack Andraka. He was a high school freshman who competed in a science competition, and created a "dipstick" style sensor that is 90 percent accurate at testing for pancreatic cancer in blood samples. It's also being considered as a prime candidate for testing for other diseases.

My son takes college prep classes with a young man who apparently has come up with some new math theorum. It goes beyond my understanding but he has already been recruited to attend some big name university, based on his mathematical theories as a high school student.

Amazing people are out there in the form of children and teens. And even one person can change the world. Think Nelson Mandela, or Ghandi, or even Sixto Rodriguez who so greatly affected a generation of South Africans.

BTW, my soon-to-be-ex SIL comes to every family event and is always the first person in line for food. I recently found out from one of my sisters that SIL has been coming to these events for more than 25 years and she has yet to bring a gift. WTF!!!!! I never even noticed. Oh, well, her daughter, my niece, is pregnant. Payback is a bitch. We all plan on attending the baby shower and not bringing a gift. We'll use her line: "Oh, were we supposed to bring a gift????"

This same SIL invited us to contribute to my brother's 40th birthday gift, but made it known that we wouldn't be invited to the party. It was just for close friends. Needless to say, no one contributed. SMH.

People pull crap like this because we let them. A lot of times we follow along like sheep (sorry, but it's true) and don't have the chutzpah to say "enough is enough". Well, the older I get, the flimsier my filters get.

There is definitely a homesteader movement. We've looked at land and figured four acres, chickens, goats, a beef cow and garden would be great. We could buy the land with our equity and save for a year living in a trailer to buy a simple modular home and be debt free.

However, we live in California so the trailer isn't up to code. It requires engineered septic at $30,000. Hook up to the water line is &12,000.

California is not homestead friendly with all the regulations. None of the homes on the Netflix program would be ok in the counties surrounding me.

It was sad to say goodbye to our dream but maybe when the kids are grown.

I'm happy to see a more down to earth approach lately. The recession really humbled us and I think everyone I know makes their own laundry detergent, cans their fruit and aspires to live simply but fully.

TFW is behind the times with her flaunting and spending. Sure she has chickens, but the average family even the upper middle class, are not buying three vehicles per person.

Has anyone here ever tried researching their family trees? My father's 65th birthday is coming up and I wanted to do something really cool for him.

He knows very little about his family beyond his parents except for a few last names. So when I saw him last, I got what few details he did have (his parents' birthdays and his grandparents' last names) and I was amazed how far I was able to go back.

On his father's side, I got as far back as his great-grandfather and on his mother's side, his great-great-grandparents. There are a couple of blank spots in there but otherwise, it's pretty thorough and only took me a few days.

I have been using free census information from both Canada and the UK that's available on-line. I was just wondering if it's worth my while to sign up to Ancestry.com or some similar site?

I'm just surprised about how much I did find out for free. (I even found my great grandmother's obituary.)

Anyway, has anyone tried using one of these sites and if so, has it been worth it?

Thanks. :D

Yes, I understand that is what most are talking about. My comment was to lukebandit. The implication was that none of the younger children are in any sport, and therefore, know nothing about teamwork. In the second part of my comment, I did say that I don't know if the children are involved in out-of-school sports, but the fact is that they DO know what goes on during a competition because they participate in school. At least they have that much going for them. No thanks to TFW.

I'm glad you are enjoying your trip, admin. I did the same thing, only unintentionally, and it was probably the best trip we ever did. We decided to do a road trip on the East Coast, from Maine to Florida. GPS was all set to go, but I did go to AAA and get maps and tour books for each state. Second day into the trip, GPS died. It was a fast demise. I didn't feel like shelling out a few hundred dollars for a new one, so we got out the maps. The kids had a blast learning to read maps, seeing where we were, how far to the next stop, learning the map scale in terms of distance, etc. They were able to find alternate routes when traffic was heavy. Yes, we did get lost a few times, had to stop and ask directions, but we landed on some unexpected historical places that weren't part of the original plan. I'd do it again in a heartbeat -- plus the kids now know how to read a map!

Millicent, you know what I absolutely LOVE about Sixto Rodriguez? He never set out to be a hero, he never knew he WAS a hero to so many, and when he found out, he was so humbled and 'oh gosh!' about it. He got ripped off by his label, and IIRC, he never sought retribution, and when he did get some money, he gave it all away. He is amazing. I love that album too!
PJ, if you have a good relationship with your niece, you might rethink the 'no gift' thing for her shower, unless she's like her mom. But if she's not, it's not her fault her mom is such a pig. The 'contribute but don't come to the party' thing is appalling, but you all did the right thing. However, your niece might be hurt and may not understand what is happening. I stayed out of my nephew's life for several years because I simply cannot stand his dad (my drug addict brother). Recent events have forced us all to deal with each other and I regret that I penalized my nephew because of his dad. My nephew is disabled and I now know he asked for us all the time. He flings himself at me when I see him and just holds on tight. Just my two cents, even though you didn't ask for them. I'm not judging, just sharing my own regrets for misplacing my anger toward an innocent.

“She feels the book is already ‘out there’ and thinks that ‘even though a lot of things are fabricated and untrue,’ she doesn’t feel the need to drudge up old news and waste unnecessary money on attorney fees that could go to feeding her children’s mouths.”

A "lot of things are fabricated and untrue"? Guess that also means that a lot of things are true.

Sounds like another sheeple source. They always bring up about how Kate has to feed her children.

Many times things from the first and second child can get pretty well worn out. I had to get a new crib, because the one we had been using was recalled and I really didn't think it was safe. In fact, they were no longer making that kind. The car seat, after two kids, looked like something that was picked up at the dump yard...seat buckle had broken, washable lining was stained and nasty. The "jumper" exercise play thing no longer jumped, and the highchair pad was ripped. The highchair had seen better days. They don't make these things to last -- the idea is for you to keep buying new. It's not like in the "old days" when you used a wooden playpen for all six children and it still had lots of mileage left on it.

The thing to do is to go to some of the big box stores, check and see if anything you need was purchased online and returned to the store. So often the stores heavily discount these items when they put them on their shelves. You can make out quite well. For example, a $250 car seat might be on sale in the store for $30, and if you have a store coupon, it will be even less. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Maybe TFW planned to stay quiet and wait for the book interest to blow over, but after 1,000 sales, she realized her silence could be damning?

This is the old chestnut that Kate drags out every single time- the babies need to eat!
Honey, everyone's kids need to eat, and the FACT is that Kate spent countless thousands on a frivolous lawsuit, and insinuated that Jon was a danger to her children, somehow, threatening their safety.
Now she's going to play "high-road taker"?.
Sorry, that doesn't wash anymore.

Kate wants it both ways.
"I'm being a good mom by spending thousands and thousands of dollars on lawyers, filing a frivolous lawsuit that wouldn't hold up in Romper Room Court".

and

"I'm being a good mom for NOT filing a lawsuit, because my kids need food."

In Kate's mind, she's not damned if she does, and not damned if she doesn't.

I think the truth of the matter is that Kate thought she could sic her lawyers on Robert and Jon, and they'd pee their pants, throw their hands up in the air, and surrender.
Kate didn't count on Robert and Jon lawyering up with with excellent representation, and fighting back against one of the biggest bullies ever.

PJ, if you have a good relationship with your niece, you might rethink the 'no gift' thing for her shower, unless she's like her mom. But if she's not, it's not her fault her mom is such a pig.

I agree, I'd just like to see the look on my SIL's face. Actually, my niece is 25, single and the sperm donor is 2000 miles away from her. (I know, powerful sperm, huh?) I'm lucky if I see her once a year. I will buy a gift for the baby, but I won't be attending a shower. As I told my mother when I refused to go to a baby shower for another knocked-up single niece, "I refuse to celebrate what I consider to be a tragedy." Bringing a child into this world when you don't have a pot to piss in, or a window to throw it out of, is a tragedy, IMO. The poor kids don't ask to be born and are innocent victims.

Yes, Diane, my filters are almost completely worn out. I treat everyone in my life with the respect that is due to any human being, but if you ask my opinion you'd better be prepared for the answer.

Dutch Mom, I totally agree with you and I had to replace quite a few items myself. My original stroller was in pretty good shape, but it had no storage. Just this ridiculous slot thing underneath. I got a new one with a jumbo basket in the back! It sounds like you and me did what most people did with subsequent children- we bought the new equipment ourselves. I got Toys R Us to match a price on that stroller and take a coupon! I still remember how tickled I was when I walked out with that box, I paid 1/3 of the orig. price.

Baby showers used to be one per customer and for subsquent babies you might get a small gift from people who visited you at the hospital or after you came home. Now, not so much. One of my family members had 3 girls in 5 years. She and her mother planned and threw an elaborate shower for each baby. The nursery was redone each time with a totally different theme, color pallette and $600 worth of boutique bedding. She actually had the nerve to say aloud that it was wrong to make a baby use old, ratty clothes and bedding and that she wanted better for her kids. With that statement, at least 20 guests there of a certain age almost had coronaries. I absolutely support her right to feel that way- but leave me, everyone else and our checkbooks out of it!!

A lot of the posters today seem to have the same sediment. It's a GoFundMe Kickstarter generation where they feel they are entitled to just be handed or gifted very expensive things because they want them and feel they deserve the very best. "Not being able to afford it" is not in their vocabulary or in their conscience.

***************
Me too --- I have fun looking through the baby stuff and picking out a cute outfit, or even baby diapers. My sister quilts and she always makes a lovely baby quilt for baby showers. Any excuse to get together with family or friends is usually a fun time too.

People can have registries and even ask for expensive items. I only buy what I can afford in my budget, and as my family and friends know I'm not made of money, it's never caused any awkwardness. Another fun gift could be coupons for babysitting, or to deliver a meal during the first few weeks after mom and baby are back home.

PJ, if you don't want to attend a shower, that's perfectly okay. However, many a young couple and/or single mom have brought a baby into this world while living on quite a shoestring. It doesn't mean the child will have a terrible life. During the depression, most people were very poor. Yet they did have families, and somehow struggled through the difficult times.

One of my friends in college had a cousin who got pregnant her senior year in high school, with twins. Bio dad chose to skip out on the whole thing, so there she was, age 18 and a mom to twin boys. She hung in there, worked her tuckus off, ended up as a pharmacy tech, raised those two boys and although they were sometimes a bit wild and turned her hair grey, they ended up as responsible adults who love their mom and now have families of their own.

It's definitely better to be financially secure before having a child, but many a young parent/couple have managed to meet the challenge and raise a family on a shoestring. It does not necessarily have to turn out badly :)

I don't know, Auntie Ann. I only had one shower -- for the first, and it was a surprise so I didn't tell anyone what to get (nor would I have, even if I had known about the shower). Everyone chipped in for a stroller. That was the "big item." Some folks bought some baby clothing, blankets and a mobile, but no diapers. I appreciated everything I got.

And yes, sparkle, we bought everything we needed ourselves...with the help of price matching, coupons, and other great deals. I'd like Kate to be held to the same standard that anyone is, and that is, explain why she is not suing again.
If the kids' safety was in question, and their futures' in danger when the book was released the first time, what has changed now?

Isn't their safety and future just as important as food?

Explain what's changed now, and not just that BS about choosing to feed them instead.

If you actually read the book, this book that is 'out there now", you would know that Kate is a multi millionaire, so insinuating that she's in jeopardy of not being able to afford groceries is a gross exaggeration, and outright lie, in addition to being a sickening insult to people living hand to mouth.

Stop with the fucking "I can't pay my bills, feed the kids, buy clothes", when you are obviously spending a huge amount of money on your looks, and live in a mansion, AND JUST BOUGHT YOUR KIDS A &7K BIRTHDAY GIFT(IF YOU CALL IT THAT).

Gawd, the sanctimony and hypocrisy is sickening and offensive.

Then why did she copyright the journals in April 2013? Why didn't she copyright them when she used them to write MB, or before the book even was released the first time? ROL had articles with excerpts from the book before the original book was released in September 2012.

The only reason Kate is not taking legal action now is probably because she can't get a lawyer to take the case for her. If Martin Garbus gave Robert the okay to re-release the book, I doubt any lawyer would want to touch the case.

Kate's using the children as an excuse for why she's not going to sue, but the truth is she has absolutely no case.

Millicent, I agree with your comment about people not being able to count back change to customers. A few years ago, the electronic cash registers were down and the local gas station. I paid with a twenty and had to tell the young man (about 19 years old), how to count back my change. He couldn't figure it out. I see this quite often at stores if the registers go down and everything has to be handled manually with cash only; the cashiers have trouble counting back change.

Regarding bridal/baby showers, I am frustrated with the over the top showers. Everyone has to rent a hall, have it catered, and the registry is full of expensive gifts that many cannot afford. For my daughter's baby shower, I did an outdoor shower, at our house, and served a variety of appetizers, beverages, plus a cake that her uncle (the bakery chef) made. When helping her with her registry at Target and Wal-Mart, I reminded to have smaller items because not everyone can afford expensive things, and to be happy and grateful for the items received. We and the grandparents, and some of her close friends, pitched in for stroller, car seat, and high chair. the other registry items were simple clothes, rattles, diapers, or whatever anyone could afford to purchase.

With the "newest" talk of the "real" journals, is it possible to request a copy of copywritten material?

*************************

I am pretty much the same way. I used to be a hard core road atlas and paper maps guy. Then I got into geocaching for awhile and bought the modern technology.

Today, I love using GPS when I travel. But I still like to look at maps ahead of time to get an idea of the "lay of the land."

Sometime, the GPS will reroute me around a wreck. So there I drive, blindly following directions on faith and not knowing for sure where I am. It is a very uncomfortable feeling. But it is also entertaining to look at a map afterward to see the route I wound up taking.

Like anything else, I firmly believe that it is best to know how to do something manually before relying on a machine to do it for me. That goes for GPS as well as calculators. It will be the same when self-driving cars become commonplace - I now believe that will happen in my lifetime.

Thanks. :D

Go to LDS.org. Register for their genealogy program, The Family Tree.

There is never a charge for their records. There are many videos and print outs to help you learn how to use their stuff.

It is SO great! I have gone back many, many generations. So interesting. Best hobby I never paid for!

So I did. We passed Tropicana Stadium and he said he didn't think we were supposed to go that far. He asked if I was watching the blue dot. I assured him I was. He pulled off and looked and said we were way off course. I asked how he knew. He said, "You are supposed to keep the blue dot on the blue line!" I said, "You never told me THAT part!" He said, "The blue dot is US, of course it's moving, you idiot!" We still laugh about that. He downloaded the mapquest app, which guides you turn by turn and so did I, when I got my Android.

The entitlement culture is bad, but the esteem movement is worse. Kids are not taught that the real world is a dog eat dog, survival of the fittest game. That's nonsense or she wouldn't have sued him in the first place last year. And that was ages after the book came out I would like to point out, and was largely old news. By suing him she just made it new news all over again.

So when did she have this big epiphany that lawsuits aren't worth it happen? Because she sure has spent a lot of time in the court of law since she got celebrified.

I love these sheeple. Bless their hearts. Let's see. You find a coupon site. You get the code. If you do online shopping, you paste in the code at checkout. If you're going to use it in a store, you find a printable coupon, and you PRINT IT OUT! Then you take it to the store. You can also do this on your phone.

Or you check the newspapers, and especially the inserts in the Sunday paper. Then you get your scissors and you clip out the coupon, take it to the store and redeem it.

Done. Do you really need Kate to tell you that? Or if you need a pair of petite slacks, Milo will direct you to Kate's site. She hasn't been hawking it lately. It's time.

*************************

Yeah. But how many people today could not understand what was going on if a clerk counted up from the sale amount to the amount handed to him or her?

Sometimes I would be trying to get rid of a bunch of singletons. If the total was $7, I would hand over a ten and two ones. About half of the time, I would be handed the two ones back immediately with a quizzical look. I then have to explain that I wanted a five back.

A new reality show started last night that you may be interested in. It's called "Married at First Sight" on the FYI network (used to be BIO). It's a social experiment that scientifically matches 3 couples who marry without having met each - other until they meet at the altar. The 4 expert 'matchmakers' are psychologists, PHDs, sociologists, professors. It was pretty interesting.

It is more of a documentary than the usual scripted 'reality' shows we're used to. It started with an introductory background episode and then the second episode getting everything moving.

***********
Millicent, I loved seeing you write about Jack! He is a close friend of one of my sons, and yes, he is a brilliant young man. Their group of friends includes some of the most amazing minds you can imagine. You could see that they had something special even when they were very young. I remember Jack's 6th grade science fair project. It was retrofitting low-head hydroelectric dams to make them safer. In 7th grade he was trying to find a way to wipe out a dangerous form of algae found in a river in West Virginia. Incredible. My son has his own unique area of expertise, but I won't say what it is here. But--he has done the TV rounds, too. The kids in their little group have all been to the White House to meet Pres. Obama. They travel, lecture, and work hard to make our world a better place. And they are all just going into their senior year of high school this fall. They are brilliant, funny, very social, civic-minded. Yes, there is hope for the next generation.

Hi. I've been gone for awhile but finally got caught up reading.

I'm glad Robert's book is selling. Was Al's book ever Number 1 in ANY category? How about the cookbook (I don't really keep track of those things).

Orphan Black. Awesome. I do all my TV watching on Amazon Prime so I have to wait awhile for Season 2. Just finished Downton Abbey (so good) and finally watched the Buffy/Angel series (also good). Another good show is Lie To Me. Tim Roth is gruff but lovable and the science of lying is very interesting. Friday Night Lights is another new show for me. Taylor Kitch is adorable and I have a feeling he's going to be a big star. Kyle Chandler .... there are no words.

As much as I'm enjoying all these shows, I still miss Breaking Bad. Nothing compares.

I'm glad Rosie will be back on the View. She was the only reason I started watching in the first place but I had to stop when they all yell over each other. Elizabeth is very bitter and is speaking out against Rosie. What a baby. Rosie didn't "speak against our troops" she asked a question. People who hate Rosie are real haters and can't see anything past their hate.

My problem with Rosie has nothing to do with her politics. I have an issue with every spouse she has being her "wife." The first one, who she had and raised kids with was her wife. They married in San Francisco. Since they've split up she's had a few more relationships and she ALWAYS refers to her mate as her "wife." Everytime I read about her she has a new "wife." I'd feel the same way about anybody who considers any relationship a marriage but that's just me.

********************************
My boss at the time took me shopping for a stroller. One of my friends at the shower gave me a Diaper Genie (great gift and one I used daily!). But the gift that I will always keep and is now tucked safely away, was a simple green blanket with satin edging that a co-worker gave me (a set of two). My son loved those blankets. The satin edging plus the softness of the blanket itself was soothing to him. Gifts don't need to be fancy to be well loved and well used.

BTW, I love the suggestion for giving a diaper bag filled with some baby basics. I'll have to remember that for the next shower :)

Auntie, I think my dad and yours must have been cut from the same cloth as far as the maps and travel itineraries. My dad was a meticulous planner as well. He would always give us the blow-by-blow of how many miles we traveled, or were going to travel, every day. Unfortunately, his idea of fun was to drive 8-12 hours a day so we wouldn't miss any opportunity to see as many sights as possible. And to keep us in the lap of luxury, he always planned our trips around having a Motel 6 as the epicenter of our journeys. Despite (or maybe because of) all the hours of driving, we had some awesome trips.

I don't think the whole generation is doomed not at all. There are plenty of good kids out there and adults with their heads on straight. I think I saw Jack on 60 Minutes and he's awesome, too bad his test will probably be stuck in trials for years.

I am only concerned about the kids and adults who are being so coddled. The problem is there are plenty of them and it directly affects those of us who chose not to coddle our children or behave like an adult who has been coddled. There is just no denying the coddling that is happening. They have even been doing research on it. Which not surprisingly found that coddled children struggle as adults.
