Five important lessons from 'The Armstrong Lie'

"The truth in all this is hard. Such a huge number of people wanted to believe so bad, that they hated anyone who didn't believe, and hated anyone who questioned it."

The Armstrong Lie is a documentary chronicling Lance Armstrong's comeback tour. The documentary had completed most of its filming when Lance's lies were exposed and he was subsequently banned from the sporting world. The filmmaker then went back to the cutting room floor and re-edited the film to incorporate the story of a dramatic fall from grace.

Here are five lessons to be learned from his powerful work:

1. Lying catches up eventually.

This is an obvious one. Lance was described by many as a gifted storyteller, able to craft a careful and compelling lie to sell products, and himself. If anyone was equipped to deceive, it was him. Lies piled up upon lies so effortlessly for the star that some friends said they didn't think he even knew he was lying. But a house built on sand will eventually fall, and so too did Lance's deceitful empire.

2. Suing can't always make your problems go away.

Sometimes the nice guy
finishes first in the end.
Lance used his incredible wealth and power to try to make his critics shut up, often suing or threatening lawsuits, and for many people it worked and they crawled into a black hole and disappeared. But Lance's former teammate, Frankie Andreu, and Frankie's wife Betsy, were determined to get the truth out there. They had nothing to lose. Frankie had already confessed his own wrongdoing, admitting he used performance enhancing drugs during several races, and he was too old to get back into the sport anyway. The Andreus also felt very burned by Lance. They felt that Lance's continued insistence on sticking to his lies when Frankie and many others had long ago owned up to what they did wrong, was perpetuating a dark cloud over the cycling world. Lance also used to be their close friend, and they felt betrayed that he would contradict their story and smear their names when they knew they were telling the truth (Betsy once accidentally found a cooler filled with banned substances in Lance's bus). Betsy especially was a woman of principles who deeply resented cheaters and liars. Lance didn't understand someone caring more about their principles than their money, because Lance is, quite obviously, without principles.

When Armstrong realized the Andreus weren't going to back down, he upped the ante by having some of his people threaten them. Even that didn't work. Lance also orchestrated campaigns to shut others up, like his former friend Jonathan Vaughters. Lance eventually apologized to Betsy, and whether it was sincere (many viewers will think it's not) it was an apology she accepted graciously. Betsy, with all her courage and determination, as well as her penchant for forgiveness, emerges from the documentary a key reason the house of cards fell, and the voice of morality. She is a modern day hero and whistleblower.

3. Your haters may have a point.

Armstrong chose to frame his critics as haters and liars, and tried to get rid of them through intimidation and lawsuits. Much of the media was reluctant, and scared, to believe the critics. However in the end the critics were right. If a bunch of people are jumping up and down trying to explain that something is just not the way it seems, they just may be on to something.

4. Quitting while you're ahead is often a good thing.

Quite simply, Lance got greedy. Three or four first place finishes weren't enough, he wanted more. Most Lance historians agree that had he simple stopped at the top of his game, none of this ever would have come out.

5. Journalists should never be fans too

This reminded us so much of Kate Coyne and her odd defense of all things Kate Gosselin. The filmmaker admitted he was a fan of Lance, and set about to make a documentary about his hero. The fi
Kate Coyne
lm was almost complete before the filmmaker finally got a clue that the house of cards was falling. Perhaps being so enamored with the guy prevented him from seeing the truth. As a result, he had to tell the story in hindsight. Had he been willing to open his eyes to his hero, he could have become the greatest whistleblower of them all and a hero himself. He was too busy being a fan to realize he had a Pulitzer story within his grasp. A journalist should never become so captivated by their famous subjects or the story they are telling that they miss the truth.

The Armstrong Lie is available on Netflix, Redbox, and many other outlets.

haven't worked as a nurse in years, but the values and ethics instilled in my profession are very much a part of me, today. To violate them would be to commit an act of betrayal on myself. Would any of the attorneys here risk their license to help out a friend. Knowingly commit perjury or plant evidence? Because, that would be the same thing. Licensed professionals sign their name to uphold a code of ethics. Very few do not take this pledge seriously.

I went back to Robert's book. In drafts for Multiple Blessings, he found out the doctor's names. The reason Kate left her original doctor was that the doctor recommended IVF, implantation of one embryo, if you really just want to have one more. Robert confirms this with two individuals, the doctor and someone else in the office.

Midnight Madness said...

In Multiple Blessings Kate says she was already pregnant when her ovaries hyperstimulated. They blew up and filled with fluid. The hyper stimulation occurs when the ovaries react to the fertility drug. If you are not pregnant and due to have IUI, they will not do the IUI. So who knows what the truth is.

************

Who said she was hospitalized? Is that common procedure when your ovaries blow up?

@Kateplusmy8 Glad y'all are doing good. Spring is pretty with everything blooming. Swim time soon, is the pool ready for the kids? ☀️ 🏊

Oh, sure! Swimming weather. Frost and freeze warnings nearly every night; snow last week and this person asks if the pool is ready. You betcha...for a polar bear plunge.

Wait -- isn't it tradition for the six to have a swim birthday party regardless of the weather? I remember a few years ago it was 40 degrees and raining and those kids were in the pool. I guess the show must go on.

Speaking of Kate using her fans whenever she needs them for something, this tweeter, a sheeple, is saying that Kate ignores the haters, but it also applies to Kate paying no attention to the fans. Funny!

How long has it been since Kate threw some lovin' to Mrs. Kravitz?

Lisa Adcox ‏@poorbabi 54m
@Donthaveacanary @AlfredoCocozza @Chablis4u @ljohnson2006 @Kateplusmy8 I have to say,Kate amazes me how well she is able to ignore them.

TLC stinks said...

Robert says: she lied to the doctor that she and Jon had been trying to conceive for one year when actually she and Jon had only been married six months. Kate diagnosed herself with PCOS. She was convincing. According to Robert, it's not uncommon for doctors to take a patient on their word because fertility treatment is big business and Kate was a nurse, after all. Kate was dejected that she got pregnant only with twins. Yes, that was her reaction.

So what Robert claims is that Kate planned to have more follicles mature, so she ordered from a foreign country, I'd guess Canada, HCG to give to herself. What happened was the doc gave her his last shot of HCG and then did the IUI. Kate went home and that day gave herself that extra shot of HCG. The doctor had only seen four mature follicles but by the time he next saw Kate in the hospital when her ovaries had hyper stimulated, there were seven sacs. Boy was he surprised. Robert,BTW, did not say he spoke to the doctor, but he knows him, he's black (Kate called him her African doctor) and his practice is in Wyomissing.

So I kept asking myself, why would Kate say in her book the doctor, after seeing those seven sacs, want to talk about selective reduction if Jon and Kate were clear that they did not believe in it. Robert thinks Kate had never brought it to the doctor's attention until it was too late. And being anti- selective reduction would serve two purposes: HOM's and support from the Christian community.

TLC stinks said...

Midnight, the pain can just be uncomfortable all the way to excruciating and maybe even life threatening. Robert's theory is that she brought on the high level of hyper stimulation with her extra dosage of the HCG. Ovary hyper stimulation with fertility treatment is common, but Kate's pain required hospitalization.

TLC stinks said...

Robert said Dr. Gosselin was paying for the fertility treatments, so there was some involvement with these fertility doctors.

Or did she beg her way to DWTS, since apparently Erin Andrews is not working out? Wat she didn't say is I'm home on Easter with my kids. She could have meant the nanny was home with her kids and it was egg-celent because she didn't have to be there. She has tweeted so many lies/egg-zagerations and her tweets are so cryptic that it's hard to believe anything she says.

Why is it being taken for gospel that she's on her way to CA? Did I miss something?

Ex-Nurse, I always respect the way you present yourself as a professional, but like Vanessa said, there are bad seeds in lots of professions. I was in the ICU , hooked up to a ventilator and many other machines ,was totally paralysed from my chest to my toes, could not move or make a sound. During those 6 weeks, I was hit and punched by 2 different nurses, 1 a female, 1 a male. I did nothing wrong! Imagine you
stuck in the bed, totally helpless, and that is done to you. I thought they would kill me!! I was as afraid as any person could be, in a place that was supposed to help people. These people lurk in all professions, you never know until something happens.

Yes, there are cruel and negligent people in every profession. But, that isn't what the discussion was about, or my comment. It was about risking a medical license and reputation to do a favor for a dentist.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

My feeling on what happened was that it was a medical mistake that should not have happened. Someone is to blame for that, which is why such cases are usually reviewed. That could have been the medical professionals, perhaps eager to increase their records of successful pregnancy, or make a pregnancy happen as quickly as possible because a good friend was involved. They rolled the dice and that one roll in a thousand was seven babies. Dumb luck. Perhaps it was Kate and Jon for having relations when they were advised not to. Perhaps it was Kate, who with her medical knowledge, knew what she needed to say, what she needed to do and take and how to get it. But the fact that the vast majority of people in such professions would never dream of such a thing does not mean there aren't a few bad apples. I am surrounded by attorneys who are dedicated to morals and ethics. Would cut off their left arm before violating those ethical codes. That doesn't mean I'm going to deny there are certainly some attorneys out there who have done some terrible things. I need only read the disbarments in my monthly trade magazine to see that. I don't know any of those men and women. I don't know anyone even remotely like them. But, they exist.

I don't get the sense any of this was malicious, but I do think it was reckless.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I was deleting some old emails and was reminded that there are celebs out there who are just as much of a jerk to their fans as Kate has been this past month. Not that that makes it right, but she sure isn't alone.

Take Andy Rooney for example. In one of his last pieces before he died, he brags about what a privileged life he had from day one, talks about refusing to sign autographs period no exceptions and that people are stupid to want an autograph, and made fun of anyone who would bother to write him a letter. May he RIP, but he came off as a real ungrateful jerk to everyone who bothered to follow his career. The problem is I don't think fans ever think that their celebrity would ever think this way about them. They refuse to believe how ungrateful some of them are.

All this talk about how TFW deserves private time on her abortion or not abortion makes me think about how she got so pissed off at a radio interview when the intervewer dared to ask how old she was when she lost her virginity but was more than happy to go on and on about how embarassed her pre teen daughters were buying their first bras.

I am not saying the two instances equal the same thing it just reminded me that TFW picks weirdo stuff to be that's too personal how dare you ask that about me about then talks about how much she wants a man especially one who will be brutal and cruel to her children and that there is no problem with the listening public hearing and thinking and talking about her 12 year old daughters breasts.

Kate may have been off to Hollywood. To me, it's just as likely she's off to a vacation to "recuperate." I'm sure she thinks she deserves it. Bahamas, Mexico, Aruba? Who knows. But her tweet about temperatures getting warmer made no sense to me. I think it's been so random here lately. Warm, cold, rainy, windy, up, down, etc. The only part that has really felt like spring to me was the smell before the rain on Tues. There's that spring rain smell. I vote time near Steve 's house then flying to a vacation.

It's funny because whenever someone says something like 'they're has beens' and so on, I just look at the bottem line. She's got WAYY more money than you and I do.

-------------------

You have no idea how much money any of us has and that has absolutely nothing to do with her poking fun at a victim of a tragic event. That said, having earned a huge stash of cash is no excuse for having a laugh at the expense of someone else's pain.

"The 'entertainment industry' drove her husband to suicide. So yes, I'd say she's paid her dues. They were absolutely horrid to her."

------------------

Bottom line is that many things contribute to a suicide, and unless one is there, lived in that situation, they don't know the many factors that make someone take his/her own life. Regardless if the entertainment industry was the main cause or not, it doesn't give a person carte blanche to take revenge on that industry, with the target being an innocent victim of a kidnapping. Causing someone else pain is not going to bring back Joan Rivers' husband. An eye for an eye just doesn't work here. You say that the entertainment industry caused his suicide, so if anything, she should be much more cognizant of feelings of others who have suffered at the hands of someone else. You just don't drive the knife in deeper because you yourself have been to hell and back. Why would someone open the wounds of another person, knowing how very slowly those wounds close...if ever? You THINK before you open your mouth and make a distasteful joke at the expense of someone else.

I wonder if those who don't find Joan's comments nasty, shocking and uncalled for have ever been on the receiving end of "jokes" like that. I imagine they wouldn't think it's too funny if they were the victims of a horrible situation and someone publicly made them the butt of a cruel joke. If Joan Rivers finds humor in self-deprecation that's one thing and she can do it to her heart's content, but what she did was to hit way below the belt. In this case, it wasn't the least bit funny.

Being hard working has nothing to do with whether someone is insensitive and makes cruel jokes at the expense of people who have been brutally traumatized.

And the definition of success is arbitrary. If you measure success on a scale of empathy and kindness, and not on a willingness to use another human being's tragic circumstances as material for an act, then I would say Joan is not the least bit successful.

And what, exactly, has she "kinda" won in the end? When she is gone from this earth, she will be remembered by millions of people as a mean-spirited opportunist, who made a living hurting people's feelings. That doesn't sound much like winning to me.

Blowing In The Wind said...

------------------------

Either one of whom? What has one "won" if she/he has lost the respect of others? Is this how one measures "success...in terms of money?" Life shouldn't be printed on dollar bills.

Some seem to be kind of hung up on money and wealth. Is that the bottom line? The end (materialism, wealth) justifies the means (humor at the expense of innocent victims)?

If so, what a sad way to live one's life. I remember a highly-respected news commentator once saying, "Success is more permanent when you achieve it without destroying your principles."

So be it.

Maybe TFW wasn't at the airport. The NPR reporter could have been mistaken. She said the woman looked vaguely familiar. Kate has gotten so cookie-cutter looking with her surgery. It could have been any blond. She wasn't yelling at anyone so it's hard to be sure.

I thought Kate had the bachelor pad not Steve. Wasn't there an old story that she has a condo near Steve's house?

I just found this tidbit in Robert's book that proves Kate/Steve leak info to the tabs. Remember the Neilds visiting for Thanksgiving 2008 after Kevin and Jodi said there was an affair? Robert says Steve confronted Jon and accused him of telling lies to Kevin snd Jodi. So guess what? The tabs (a source) report Jon made up about them having an affair. Hmmm. How would the tabs come up with that?

Agree. I think that's why I was so appalled by Andy Rooney. I couldn't believe that someone's career, so depended on viewers and "fans", could have felt so mean spirited about it all. I was shocked. It was like we've all been duped all these years. If anything, that segment should have been all about the opposite. Thanking you, us, the viewers, for the decades and decades we've watched, listened, and even contacted him. And all the fodder it created for his segments.

My opinion of him is about two inches tall now. I don't care what he has said or done, it was those parting words that will forever solidify him in my mind as rude, ungrateful, and with no sense of why he is where he is. I.e., it was all those people he can't stand.

And now he's passed on, not long after that statement, and can't undue it. It's permanent.

I really don't care if a celebrity doesn't like their fans. I think many of them don't. I think many of them find the very idea of fans creepy, and that would be understandable. But you still understand that those people make your career and you keep your feelings about them to yourself. You don't tell those people that to their faces. Heck, it's not like even Kate has ever gone that far. She may ignore them many times, which is surely rude and ungrateful, but that's not the same things as telling them to their faces she can't stand them.

It's all over the internet that not only is Celebrity Apprentice filming, but that Geraldo is on the team. Any fan with half a brain can find this information out. Please don't insult his fans by implying they are sitting there thinking gosh wonder where Gerlado is? I trust people can google, or ask. And they would find out in two seconds flat.

I stand by my point, it's kind of funny to keep playing coy about it when it's out there so blatantly. Like trying to keep a pregnancy hidden when it's obvious. You can think it's warranted or not warranted, but you can't change the fact that I get a bit of a chuckle about it, what do you care? What an absolutely absurd thing to pick on me about.

AuntieAnn said...

OT - I CANNOT believe this. I heard this on the radio today while driving home so I had to google it. Sometimes there really are no words:

ALCONA - Still in the throes of agony from losing their son in a vehicle crash, the parents of young Brandon Majewski are now reeling after they learned the woman who struck and killed him is suing their dead child.

The spunky, handsome, 17-year-old bike enthusiast was out with his two buddies on Oct. 28, 2012 when they hopped on their bicycles to go for hot dogs on a drizzly, dark night around 1:30 a.m.

“I know they should not have been out there that late,” his father said. “But they are good kids.”

Brandon was struck from behind by an SUV and killed while his friend Richard McLean, 16, was seriously injured with a broken pelvis and other bones. His other pal Jake Roberts, 16, was knocked off his bike but sustained only scratches.

Now the driver of the SUV, Sharlene Simon, 42, a mother of three, formerly from Innisfil, is suing the dead boy for the emotional trauma she says she has suffered. She’s also suing the two other boys, as well as the dead boy’s parents, and even his brother, who has since died. She’s also suing the County of Simcoe for failing to maintain the road.

I imagine it's quite awful to get picked on so much, which is why Kate is free to become a private figure, as we are. She is a public figure. Public figures are scrutinized, sometimes quite carefully, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Kate has sold us herself and her story for six years now, and expected payment for it, either in the form of ratings, buying the products she peddles or when the kids were younger, handing over just straight cold hard cash. Therefore, our courts have decided that we are free to criticize in a manner that is far more protected than would be to a private figure. I would not choose or like that life for myself, therefore, I have no signed up for such a thing. Therefore like all private figures, the pick, pick, picking is unwarranted and if you push it too much, not protected by case law or statute.

You are comparing a public figure to private figures. That's an unfair comparison.

The thing I'd like to remind these TFW defenders is, this woman has given as good as she's gotten, again and again. And not in a "kill 'em with kindness" way -- in a snotty, snarky, defensive way. I'd love to see a list of some of her worst retorts. So she, as a public person, got flak, and then turned around and shot back, to a private citizen.

How about the woman who said TFW didn't seem busy, and TFW guaranteed she did more in a day than the woman did in a week, and it turned out to be a mother in the military? Even the Carlos Gosselin example - this guy was just goofing around with TFW, and she probably had Laverne & Shirley on speed-dial ready to make him change his name.

Bristol's' son Tripp was a total 4 -year- old brat who decides his own bedtime, swears, kicks, makes messes, does what he wants. Melissa had him ship-shape with a sticker reward chart with a strict but affectionate show of parenting. Melissa came out on top in terms of single mothering. I don't care for Joan but she does love her daughter and grandson.Bristol seemed lazy, dependent and controlled by her son. Aw. I saw Melissa and her son at a sandwich shop maybe a year and a half ago. They were eating with another mother and her son. The boys were sitting there so quietly and politely, excellent table manners, and no one was bothering them. He looked about 11 or so, which sounds about right. I listened to it and didn'd find it insulting at all. So he doesn't like being shouted to on the streets or approached in a restaurant. He was clear that he considered himself a Writer and not a celebrity of any sort. He thanked people for listening to what he wrote, a job that gave him a good income.

His schtick was to gripe. He griped about people who bit their ice cream (or maybe it was people who lick it - I don't remember). He griped about
anything he could think of to gripe about. People tuned in to hear what Andy was going to gripe about this Sunday night. So, his final bit included words people who tuned in. "This writer writes for a living. He wants you to enjoy his work which he is proud of. He reads aloud what he writes. He was not hired for his charm and friendliness. That stuff belongs to celebrities. Words are this writer's only intended contribution to his job. They are his only product. His life is his own. Good night and goodbye. Don't let the door smack you."

I thought it was pretty good. Completely true to the person. He does not wax poetic, but his final bit mentioned his wife, kids, great grandchildren,
and I found it touching.

It came across as nasty and ungrateful, as well as poking fun at his overzealous fans.

I actually have no problem if he wants to hate his fans. That's his right. I believe him that he's really more about just being a writer than interested in being a celebrity. I wouldn't be either. But it was inappropriate and unappreciative to say anything negative about his fans especially during his very last segment. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Amen.

The sheeple & Co. like to throw the word defamation around alot. Yes, if we accused Kate of robbing a bank while waving her red wooden spoon around and yelling at the tellers to "happy up" or else, that would be defamation. Even from the beginning of the Jon and Kate saga, I think non fans have been pretty careful about sticking to opinion, observations from the national television show Kate participated in for years, and fact.

Even though Robert's book was out only two days, it was profoundly damaging. The sheeple like to think that it was taken down because it was full of lies. TLC took it down because it contained their intelluctual property, property Kate was surely contracted to keep confidential. This book appears to have pushed Kate to the very limits of her fury. This fury might have clouded her decision when resorting to 'outside help' in order to stop the discussion about the book contents. Again, I am just guessing, but she may have justified this by telling herself that she was going to win the lawsuit she planned to file against the author of the book. Attempting to silence them now was just getting a head start.

Here we are over 18 months later. Kate filed a suit but quickly dropped it when the defendants hired powerful attorneys. She also copyrighted the journal her fans said was "made up" by the author, effectively claiming it as her own words. Her fans don't like when the contents of her journal she copyrighted are discussed and they call that defamation. Instead of asking themselves why they support a woman who would do this to her babies, write about it, then copyright it, they attack us. Still, they are entitled to feel how they do regarding negative discussions about Kate. They are not entitled to keep persecuting and harrassing the people who do it, or to repeatedly claim laws are being broken when she is criticized. They also seem to think that there are some legal limits on how often Kate may be discussed. Again, there are none. I've said it before and I will say it yet again, there were 4-5 active blogs critical of the Gosselins during the height of J&K+8 and through divorce gate. If any of them were breaking any laws, TLC would have acted upon this. They did not. They sent lame C&Ds in the hopes someone would bite.... but they had no grounds. Free speech has prevailed and let it continue to prevail for all Americans.

Yes and in this case they were saying they have every right to nitpick me over the most benign comment because we nitpick Kate. "See how it feels," they nastily said. With the rare exception when she chuckled at her children's expense, which is not what I was doing. I have never liked him and always felt like he was using her. He is a dirt bag.

Anyone still watching Apprentice UK? The tasks are so delightfully simple, which is why this would be a great show to teach kids about basic business. Like this one: "Manufacture sweets and sell them at London Zoo. The team that makes the most profit wins."

I think you & I are the only ones still watching Admin. I'm just starting series 5. Haven't watched the American version in years, so can't really compare them, but the UK show has me hooked.

Sheri from the View just needs to go. Better food, better clothes? Why didn't Sheri say, Look, there are kids going hungry, starving, needing clothes, shelter. This is ridiculous. You are on tv, crying about your bills, your husband, whatever. Get off tv!

Tori and Dean have money. They rent homes that cost thousands of dollars per month. I just can't understand why Candy didn't step in and talk to Tori and advise her not to go this route.

Their children are going to suffer in the long run. Your cheating dad, your crying mother, and now they are saying that the woman that Dean supposedly cheated on in Canada doesn't exist. There is a young woman that has the same name as Emily Goodhand and she had to come out and say, I am not her!

Tori's mother, Candy sold her house for what 145 million?

Sheri would condone any kind of behavior and stick up for the reality tv shows.

If Tori does not want the paps or the gossip in the tabs, then get off TV, go private, most of us have our own laundry to tend to, we don't need to be doing yours. Then she won't have any problems. She is typical of most stars/reality wanna be stars, who bitch/whine/cry/complain, about everything, like they are the only people on the planet. No pity from me.

As for Sherri on the View, get rid of her. She brings nothing to the show, in fact I hardly watch The View. I can't stand Sherri flip-flop talk.

Yup LOL! I thought the Joan/Melissa season of CA was the best, although Penn Jillette was impressive, too. Joan's a real fighter and loves her charity (God's Love We Deliver). She's often seen out and about in NYC doing fundraising for it.

She said that the same day! I wrote about it places. Nobody cared. Offensive is her style and why break what isn't broken (to her). She gets paid in one night more than some of us get paid in a year. ******************

Well, I figure I can throw my 2 cents in here, as I am and have been a single mom since day 1. Mothers who are sincerely trying their best (and that includes single, married, divorced and/or widowed moms) will do what is necessary to care for their children, provide them with a good loving home, nutritious food, comfort when they need it, lots of love, gentle discipline, and a guiding hand. But they won't do "anything."

As an example, I'm not going to work in a strip club, nor be a prostitute. I won't beg for money on street corners and drag my kids along for pity. I won't work at a job where I'm being sexually harassed. I won't make my kids work so I don't have to. I won't be on the search for "free stuff" nor grift for freebies.

What I will do is use my educational background to obtain a job that will provide a decent income and hopefully some benefits. I will rarely buy any new clothes for myself, and instead look for gently used clothing online. I will not get manicures or pedicures because my budget doesn't allow for it. I will find healthy yet economical recipes and stretch my food dollars. I will take the time to smell the roses and enjoy every stage of my child's life because I know it goes by all to swiftly. I will respect my child's desire for privacy and I won't post pictures of him on my FB without his permission. I most definitely will not share personal details of his life with strangers via Twitter, a blog, or any other public venue.

I have never had the services of a nanny, and only very rarely did I have a babysitter. I had many sleepless nights staying up with a sick child. No one was there to relieve me, so I sucked it up and did my best. I never once placed my sick child on the floor (much less a cold lonely laundry room floor) and left him alone in his misery. I never once screamed at my child and made him cry over fear of losing his loved cuddly toy. I never once took away my child's birthday dessert because he didn't eat his dinner to my satisfaction. (My goodness, what cruelty that was.)

So to that anonymous commenter who thinks I don't know about single motherhood - she can just STFanUp. I know exactly what a single mom will do to provide for her children, and it's nothing at all like what Kate has done. Nothing at all.

Her sense of humor is limited to what she gets out of watching others be in pain or struggle. This is funny to her. Otherwise she's actually quite humorless. I've never seen her appreciate an irony or sarcastic remark, enjoy situational comedic occurrences, or understand a funny story. I don't know if this is a narcissistic thing but it sure seems like it. They don't seem to understand humor on anything but an elementary level. Maybe because it's on the same spectrum as understanding love, compassion, and other normal emotions they struggle with.
********
I think that narcissists and other types who have no real feelings for others, also lack the capacity to "get' humor. I watch a show called American Greed, which is usually about people who have committed fraud and scams of one kind or another. One guy was an "investment banker" who allegedly invested people's money in the stock market but in reality - just spent it totally on living a high lifestyle. Like all Ponzi schemes, it collapsed on itself and he did get caught. One of his tactics was to become friends with retired pilots and get them to switch over their retirement accounts to him. He was a pilot himself and would hang out with his investors. One scammed investor mentioned that this guy had no sense of humor and that he didn't seem to "get" jokes. At best, he'd give a phony laugh.

So maybe there is a connection between having the ability to identify with others, have feelings and emotions for others, and having a sense of humor or the ability to get humor.

It is sickening that kate's fans all the time they have spent adoring her, platituding her, worshipping her, fighting for her, wanting her and the kids back on tv.

How many hours they could of spent raising money to feed kids, volunteering at an animal shelter, blessings in a backpack, paying school lunch room accounts that are in arrears, volunteer at a nursing home, instead fuss, gripe, curse, spew hate all in the name of taking up for kate.

At least all of us in this group have done something constructive, to get kate and the kids off the tv. We wanted the kids off tv for good. We did the best we could, and still had time to be a blessing to someone else.

What childhoods? Certainly not normal ones. She's already robbed them of that, so I guess she figures it really doesn't matter if she's around or not.

She has never demonstrated any maternal instinct whatsoever. I really wonder if that goes back to the time shortly after their birth, when everyone was doing everything for her. It seems she never really bonded with them and now it's too late.

A CNA that worked here that night that the tornado hit her families home and the only thing that saved them was an old school bus that the father had dug a hole and covered it over with a couple of feet of dirt.

The back door was sticking out and all they had to do was jump in and shut the door. The tornado was like feet away from them. He did this homemade shelter years ago and over time it compacted the dirt like cement. They did a front page article in the paper. You have to go underground to get away from these tornadoes because they are getting stronger and stronger.

Totally OT. One more reason why I don't like "social media."

The Worst Possible Facebook Status

At 8:33 A.M. yesterday, a 32-year-old woman driving to work in High Point, North Carolina, took out her phone and posted to Facebook:

"The Happy Song makes me so HAPPY."

At 8:34 A.M., police were notified of the crash.

In the moment she posted the message, the woman crossed over the median of Interstate 85 and collided head-on with an oncoming recycling truck. She is dead.

Seventy-one percent of young Americans say they have written a message while driving. In 2012, an estimated 3,328 Americans died in crashes related to distracted driving.

That's tragic. I think there should be an app, if it doesn't already exist, that cuts your phone off when you are driving other than emergency calls. The app makes the phone becomes useless to call or text until you stop. Just remove the temptation. We should be more concerned with tragedies like that that could really happen to us versus some random unlikely event like a plane crash or ferry sinking.

......I hope she wasn't clapping along too. So sue me but I hate that song.

Tweet-le De Tweet-le DUMB said...

I don't see any real solution. An app is only useful if the person uses it. I don't see kids turning on such an app. Kids are addicted to their cell phones, etc. You can tell because they carry it in their hand at all times, don't even put it in a pocket or purse for fear or missing something, I guess. Speaking of that, I rarely if ever, see a guy walking around with his cell phone in his hand.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I don't know if there's a solution but I think we surely can do a lot to cut down on accidents.

For one, I think more education has helped as well as stricter laws. I was a car texter at stop lights and things. Little messages like I'll be there in 10. I stopped doing that because it's become clear to me how dangerous it is, as well as it's the law you can't text while driving in my state. If I really must reach someone, I use the hands free option with siri and either make a text or call that way. More education about what our modern phones can do would help. If that woman had an iPhone 4s or above she actually could have posted to Facebook hands free. (Do we know that she didn't do it that way? It's possible this could just be one big coincidence I suppose)

An app could be controlled from a remote location by the parents.

That said this woman was 32 years old. There are no parents. She should know better. She was an idiot to pull out her phone in the middle of driving. Just to post something so stupid, and now she's dead. You can't fix stupid.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Really? Teen boys and 20-somethings here all the time. As well as businessmen doing deals by text now. Other than those two groups yes it's more common to see females with phones in hand.

My friend's 16 year old boy takes selfies with his friends all the time, does there little texting app, post videos to vine and Instagram. They're not gay, they're all doing this. The selfie culture is really pathetic.

There is technology that shuts down the phone's capabilities while driving- but not all functions, so say, you can still read messages, but not post.
I think the driving teens need these installed so that parents can monitor them one way or the other.
They text- driving goes bye-bye.

Just the other day, I was driving nearby on small roads, going to the store.
I checked out a house's driveway (we need a new one) and within 2 seconds, I was on, if not starting to go over, the center line, and yes, a trash truck was coming the opposite direction.

Coming from Philly, we used to have something called "the South Philly-lean". Now, I'm sure it's called other things in other regions, but basically, the driver (usually a guy) is leaning heavily on the center console and is shifted so far right, that his head is almost in the middle of the car!
Now, what I see all the damn time is a certain, very recognizable posture of the head, tilted down and I know exactly what the driver is doing- reading or texting on their phone.
The other dead give away is that when the light turns green, the driver lags behind.
I honk and give the most disdainful look that I can muster.

&&&

It's not just an argument, it's a proven argument. It can and does. That's how my friend totaled his car, simply changing a CD. Looked down for three seconds. The other driver found out his family had money and it resulted in a huge lawsuit. There is a lot of research that suggests that simply talking to another passenger in the car, or on the phone HANDS FREE, is just as dangerous as talking on the phone in hand and texting. Driving while tired is also extremely dangerous. It's not about how you do it, it's about the portion of the brain that has to become engaged in communication. That's what makes driving harder, not the physical act.

There are many distractions in the car, texting is just one of them, the only good thing about this is that because it is such a new technology, distractions are getting a new round of attention. I'm glad they published this sort of run of the mill car accident story. They should. If just some people learn from it and decide not to change the radio every five minutes, post to FB, or lose focus while they gab away with their girlfriends, it's a good thing. But I wouldn't give up on it and throw up your hands, I think there is still a lot more awareness to be done. And the thing is we will never know what accidents have been prevented because that is hard to measure. Heck maybe I might be dead or seriously injured had I not been educated about how dangerous texting is.

Well I can't speak for others but I use my plan for far more than just that. I am a business woman and by nature of my work am often not in my office. I can pretty much run the whole show from my phone, which is really neat. This is all from the most basic of plans, though it is about 69 bucks, with a business discount. Work will actually pay for it, however I'd have to use their phones, which I don't want to do, because I want just one phone for both business and personal, not two to keep track of. That "I'll be there in 10" for me may be very important for me, if it has to do with work.

I don't think most teens need the plan I have, but then most kids aren't business people. Do I think this new technology is ridiculous for people who are just using it to catch up with fellow teens, absolutely. They don't need this any more than kids in my day needed a pager. But does it ever have some pretty amazing uses for us adults! It has made my personal and working life much easier, not harder, which in turn means I can focus my energy more on substance rather than form.

I agree about the dangers of course, and then there's the anti-social aspect of people bent over their phones instead of having a conversation.
No phones at our table or when out together.Illegal to text while driving. and yes, don't know what's it's called here, but people veering into the next lane are no doubt texting or reading one, anyhow.

Although I don't talk on the phone when I drive, either hands-free or hands-on, I never really understood this. If having a phone conversation while driving is a distraction, then talking to passengers in the car is also dangerous.

"Carole - Betty was on Twitter once but got so involved in the Brandi Glanville/Leann Rimes war that she got suspended. Kind of sad what Betty is doing now though. she thinks people care about her posts."

______________

Does "Betty" have a recognizable Twitter handle that we would all know? One of the regular Sheeple Tweeties on Kate's TL?

No amount of rationalizing will ever change my mind about social media. It's addicting and a menace.

Kate and the boys don't look like they're home, but I hope it's something fun.
Kate's got a really strange need to let everyone know her kids are happy happy happy all the time time time.
The superlatives have always been suspect.

Let the #greatmom accolades begin.
