The RTK/TFW Project: Collin's "Thomas" Hummus

TFW has a new cookbook coming out. If you can't beat 'em join 'em, right? Resident poster Silimom offered to give the recipes a fair shake, following them as closely as possible and getting her family's input, too. Other posters might chime in with their attempts as well as we go along. So in the spirit of the Julie/Julia Project, in which government worker Julie Powell spent one year cooking her way through every recipe of Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, here is our Reality T.V. Kids/The Former Wife Project, as we cook our way through Kate Gosselin's Love Is In the Mix.

First up: Collin's "Thomas" Hummus prepared by Silimom

The Cost

Since Kate has stated in the past that she cooks with ingredients labeled “organic”, I decided to do the same in order to keep the recipe as true as possible to the way she might make it at home. With that in mind, I grabbed my reusable bags and headed to my local Whole Foods.

Whole Foods is an experience, for anyone who hasn’t been to one yet. It’s as if they filter the air with some sort of chemical to make you feel more virtuous and healthy once you walk through the doors. I don’t tend to shop here, as a rule, because they don’t tend to carry the convenience foods my family eats. I do like to go here for my meats and, until the farmer’s market opened up down the street, sometimes vegetables and fruits, especially ones my local Safeway doesn’t carry on a regular basis. We also tend to call Whole Foods “Whole Paycheck” because the prices, for the most part, tend to be higher, especially on their convenience foods.

Here’s what I bought, including the prices:

Organic 365 Vegan Pita Chips with Sea Salt 9 oz $2.79
Organic 365 Tahini $5.99
Organic 365 Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Cold Pressed, 16.9 fl oz) $5.99
Organic 365 Garbanzo Beans 15 oz $1.19 each = $3.57 for 3 cans (I couldn’t find 16 oz
cans anywhere)
Total spent: $18.29

Now, Kate also calls for 18 Tablespoons or 1.125 cups of lemon juice. Whole foods sold a 2lb organic bag of lemons for $5.99 or individual organic ones at $0.99 each. However, I have both half a bottle of Safeway reconstituted lemon juice (15 Fl. Oz. @ $2.79 per bottle) and also a lemon tree (or rather my neighbors have a lemon tree that happens to hang over my fence) and while they are not certified organic by the USDA, I feel fairly confident these lemons will be close to organic, as they do nothing to the  tree - no pesticides, no fertilizer, etc. I also had garlic and salt at home, however here’s their cost from the Safeway, where I purchased them:

Garlic (non organic) - $0.79
Safeway Iodized Salt (non organic) $0.94

So total cost of combined Whole Foods and Safeway ingredients: $26.06. Now, if I had bought all the ingredients at Safeway, which is where I usually shop, this would have been my bill:

Safeway O Organic Garbanzo Beans 15 oz: $1.33 per can/$3.99 total
Safeway O Organics Extra Virgin Olive Oil 16.9 fl oz - $8.49
Safeway Open Nature Pita Chips with Sea Salt 8 oz- $2.50
Safeway Lemons (regular - could not find the organic price online) - $3.29 for a 2lb bag
Whole Foods 365 Organic Tahini Paste - $5.99
Garlic (non organic) - $0.79
Safeway Iodized Salt (non organic) $0.94

(They didn’t have Tahini Paste at Safeway, so I would have still needed to pick that up at WF. )

Total: $25.99

I’ll admit, I was surprised here. I assumed that Safeway would be cheaper, even with  buying organic. Okay, maybe I’ve been giving Whole Paycheck a bad rap for years. But what would the cost be, I wondered, if I bought primarily non-organic, which is my typical shopping habit?

Safeway Garbanzo Beans 15 oz - $1.09 per can/$3.27 total
Safeway Verdi Extra Virgin Olive Oil 17 fl. oz. - $5.99
Safeway Open Nature Pita Chips with Sea Salt 8 oz. - $2.50
Safeway Lemons - $3.29/2lb bag
Whole Foods 365 Organic Tahini Paste - $5.99
Garlic (non organic) - $0.79
Safeway Iodized Salt (non organic) $0.94

Total: $22.77

Okay, so going organic, at least for this recipe, isn’t all that much more expensive than the non organic. However, considering a 10 oz package of Sabra Roasted Garlic Hummus runs me $5.49, I think I’d save myself the $18 and just buy that. It’s very yummy and since only my husband and I eat hummus at our house, it lasts us about a week just fine. However, to really know if “do it yourself hummus” is a value, I’d have to figure out the individual serving cost of the homemade version vs the prepared, store
bought hummus. Sabra’s 10 ounce container, which is what I buy, serves 10, so I’ll use that serving size in my comparison.

Whole Foods: $2.61
Safeway Organic:  $2.59
Safeway Conventional: $2.27
Sabra Hummus: $0.55

Cost grade: D - The organic ingredients were cheaper then I thought they’d be, especially when compared to conventional products, however at 55 cents per serving, the Sabra hummus is much cheaper.

The Process

I decided to use a blender rather than my food processor so I could be as true to Kate’s recipe as possible. I drained the chickpeas, putting a small, glass bowl under the wire colander to collect the juice. Normally, I would also rinse the chickpeas, but, again, I was going for authenticity here.

Next, I measured out my lemon juice. For the record, I have a hard time with her units of measurement. I mean, how hard would it have been to google “18 Tbsp to ounces?” It took me less than 30 seconds. By the way, 18 Tbsp is 9 fluid ounces. Wouldn’t that be easier for most home cooks? I mean, since lemon juice in a bottle is measured in ounces, not tablespoons, after all. Or if you wanted to use measuring cups, it’s 1 C plus 2 Tbsp of juice.

I used up my bottle of reconstituted lemon juice (non-organic, I know, but I just couldn’t  spend $5.99 for a bag of lemons.) which gave me about 6 oz and supplemented this with 3 lemons from “my” tree, which yielded 3 oz (FYI, one lemon yields about one and a half ounces of juice. I just used what I needed to make 9 oz. total).

The rest was pretty simple. My husband minced the garlic for me and then we literally dumped everything in the blender and hit “puree”. In about 3-5 minutes, we had hummus.

So, for ease of directions I give this recipe an “A-”. The minus is in regards to the how she lists her units of measurement.

The Taste Test

The guinea pigs in this situation were myself, my husband and my 8 year old daughter. The texture was not as smooth as I could make it in my food processor but overall it was pretty good. It certainly wasn’t overly grainy. It was, however, very thick. It was also EXTREMELY tart because of the amount of lemon juice. In fact, both my husband and I agreed that the acidity of the lemons really overpowered the garlic and sesame taste, making them virtually undetectable. I think reducing the lemon juice by half, increasing the garlic by 2 additional cloves, and adding a tablespoon or two of water to the blending process would help both the flavor and the thickness.

My 8 year old tasted it with her finger and said “I don’t like this hummus.” Now, in Kate’s defense, my 8 year old hates hummus anyway, but she was a good sport and tried some. Both my husband and I finished our 1/4 cup portions, which we ate with pre-bagged organic pita chips and baby carrots, so it certainly was not inedible. I would probably give it about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being inedible and 5 being the best thing I ever ate. My husband gave it a 3 also, saying “It’s a serviceable hummus”.

Grade for Taste: C - Just way too much lemon juice.

Four days later, we still have about half of the hummus left in the fridge. My husband and I are working through it slowly.

Nutrition

Because I use the app My Fitness Pal, I can use their recipe nutrition calculator to get an idea of what the nutritional breakdown of her food is. For those of you who are interested, here it is:

Total per serving:

Calories 342
Carbs 26
Fat  22
Protein 10
Sugar  4
Fiber   9

Wrap Up

My biggest issue with her recipe isn’t the taste. I can tweak that easily and honestly if I just cut the lemon juice in half, it probably would be good (a grade of B).  It is the amount of hummus her recipe makes that is more of an issue for me. It could certainly feed 9 people easily. But I personally don’t need that much food. As you can see from the picture, her recipe filled a pretty large bowl. Kate needs to remember that not everyone has 8 kids. Now, if she were just posting this on her website, that would be one thing. Sure, people can cut it in half themselves. But if you’re putting out a cookbook, you need to respect your audience and most of the people who might buy this book have 2-3 kids tops. If this is going to be the standard result, it’s going to be way too much food for my family and most will likely go to waste. I think the next recipe I make, I will try to cut it in half and hopefully that won’t alter the flavor/taste significantly.

Overall, this was a fun experiment and I am looking forward to more “Cooking Dangerously” with Kate Gosselin.

Mady's comment was profound. Even SHE, at the tender age of 12, realizes all these trips had they continued would have ruined them by making them spoiled brats who don't understand the real world.

What does that say about this whole thing? Are the children really going to thank Kate for all this on her deathbed? Trips Mady thinks probably would have spoiled them silly had they gone on any longer? Mady didn't say oh gosh I'm so grateful mommy helped make all these trips happen. Mady said these trips would have turns us into out of touch BRATS.

What does that say about where exactly Mady values all that Kate did to get the family these things? Pretty low, IMO. What was the point of all this if the kids don't even see it as something they highly value but on the contrary see it as something that could have nearly RUINED them?

Kate has a Narcissistic personality with OCD(said so herself), they don't change, they mask, and do what they need to do, to get what they want, even fooling the public, and Kate has already done that many times, and this tactic, will not be the last. That's it for sure but I think also it's a matter of credibility. She's been awful for years. You don't get to just say I've changed and expect people to believe it. At this point, if you want people to take you seriously, you better give a much better explanation than that. What did you do wrong as you see it? How did you come to the realization it was wrong? What specifically did you do to change? How did that go? What do you do different now? Can you provide examples of a situation and how you handled it differently?

She is certainly under no obligation to share such things, however, she cannot expect anyone to even remotely begin to believe her new "i'm so sorry for being such a tool" act if she doesn't explain it better than that. Otherwise it sounds trite and PR-y.

I was scared to see my mom cry when her dad died because I had never seen it happen before. Same when our parents divorced. She held it together for the most part in front of us. She protected us. Kate doesn't protect those kids; she sets them up for exploitation constantly and trashes their father every chance she gets on camera - imagine what she's like at home. She rips people out of their lives. All our aunts were "Aunt Jody" and we would have been devastated to lose even one of them. It's so sad._____________________________________

PJ's momma, my own mother lost her mom at the age of 30. I was 10. I remember how freaked out I was when she cried. But she only did once. It still amazes me how she held it together.

Not only a better explanation, Admin, but also she needs to start walking the talk. The best way for her to make people believe the change is for her to start showing how much she's changed by her actions.

Of course, I'm not sure at this point how she's going to do that. I think a start, at least for me, would be to see her stop complaining about how tight her living expenses are and start doing something about it. Sell the house and downsize to a home you could buy outright and have no mortgage on. Move closer to a neighborhood where your kids can interact with other kids from their school, wherever that might be. Go back to work and get a nursing job that will work around your kids' schedule - there are jobs out there that will. It doesn't have to be full time. Part time money is better than no time money.

Get off Twitter.
Take down your website.
Live as a private person.

Isn't it funny how she did a People "Where are they now?" article just after TLC aired another special of Little People Big World? Oh and also just after Jon did an interview with a blog?

Again, I just don't see how Kate is going to convince me she's changed by seeking out publicity. If anyone has any thoughts, please enlighten me.

It would also help if, just hours before the People article came out in which TFW claimed she is the brand new TFW, a local teen with a credible looking twitter account who works hard at her summer job at Target and even has photos of her there to prove it, said Kate sauntered in and was a diva.

So, that woulda helped if THAT never was tweeted. lol

Off topic of the People article for a moment - Thank you to the poster who mentioned that several of her recipes were available for preview on Amazon through her "IJWYTK" book. The cookie recipe is there and easy to read.

Admin, I think you called it. Amazingly, I didn't realize that Betty Crocker was her grandmother. Cooking MUST be in her genes then!

Her applesauce recipe must have come from Grandma as well. I'm torn between the cookies now and the applesauce. A friend just gave me a bag of apple from their tree. Her recipe is pretty simple in terms of ingredients, although the proportions are messed up again -

Kate's recipe:
15 apples
1/2 c water
1 C sugar
2 tsp cinnamon

Grandma Betty's Recipe:
4 medium cooking apples (1 1/3 lb), peeled, cut into fourths and cored
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup packed brown sugar or 3 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

She multiplied the apples and sugar x 4 and the cinnamon by x8. But she left the water at 1/2 a cup?

I'll try the applesauce recipe as well. I've got all the ingredients and since I didn't buy the apples (and my kids aren't big granny smith fans anyway) I'm fine with sacrificing them in the name of cooking science.

Hmmm...Maybe now's a good time to buy that apple corer from Pampered Chef. ($50 for the corer and the stand). Or better yet, Amazon ($20). Or better yet - I'll peel them myself and use my cuisinart! ($0 because the cuisinart was a present)

Well, I'm very disappointed. Where is the karma in this world?

My own child goes to public school, we live in an apartment complex, I work 6 hrs. at a grocery store and another 8 hr. evening shift as a waitress.

No, I'm not highly educated but I do have an honest life.

Why is Kate Gosselin seemingly rewarded for her DIShonest life of scams and child abuse?

Is there any justice in this world?? Any at all??

==========

But I bet lots of times, the children at Kate's Konpound would rather be with you in a loving home than in that cold McMansion.

It reminded me of this from Proverbs: "Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife." (Prov. 7:14). (I stumbled on this once when a good friend, a single mom, was asking a similar question about her abusive ex.)

Kate's karma is inching down the road. She thinks she's seen hard? Six in diapers and the terrible 2's are nothing! Wait until she has 8 poorly-parented teenagers spanning 10 years. Bet she'll age 30 years in that time. De-aging meet speed aging!

I don't know how old you are but I'm going to say I'm probably older. My kids are 19 and 21. Here is what I have found to be a truth in life. Karma is real. And it does get everyone who walks the planet if they have done things with a dishonest and greedy motive. All you have to do it sit back, lead a good life and the universe will unfold as it should. On it's time, not ours. We all follow a 24 hour clock, the universe doesn't. And I'm not some airy fairy nut who wears a tin foil hat either. I've just made a point of being perceptive about the world around me and watched human behaviour. I don't wish ill will on anyone. Even if I wanted to, I can't wish something bad to happen to someone. I would only hurt myself by being malevolent towards someone else. I've seen that happen too.......!

No matter how good the pan the Teflon doesn't last forever and eventually begins to peel off and when it does it's suggested that you replace the pan. Why? The best explanation that I've seen on this is that while a bit of a Teflon peeling off might not mean immediate danger, it does mean that the bonding between the Teflon and the metal of the pan is starting to wear out. This means the Teflon will begin to come off in pieces and inevitably wind up in your food and Teflon is a toxic material.

TFW is like that Teflon pan that's beginning to peel. Her TLC show was cancelled, her cruise never got off the ground, she was fired from CC, her Stir contract wasn't renewed and it seems like she's no longer a spokes person for R&R Marathons. The Teflon is peeling little by little and soon there will be nothing left. This is her last ditch effort to chase that fading star however Kate has shown her toxic side one too many times and judging by the comments no one is falling for her "I've changed" persona. A leopard can't change his spots.

Let see when have seen.

-The kids being potty trained.

-One of the boys having a hurt bottom while mom shopped for beds and didn't help him.
-The kids puking in buckets on a fish trip cause mom wanted to fish.
-Seeing their parents divorce.
-Listing to mom scream at you cause you touched her bodyguards pizza.
-Losing you friend/nanny cause of mom's argument and it being on tv.
-Having your mom talk about you underwear shopping.
-Having your mom post photos of you in you pj's.
-Having you mom slam your father on in the media.
-Begging for any kind of tv show.

Their a tons apon tons of examples where she didn't draw the line in using the kids.

My mom had a dwarf apple tree in her yard. I think they were Transparency apples - an excellent mix of sweet and tart and very crisp.
She made chunky applesauce in her crockpot. It was very much like Grandma Betty's recipe, but sometimes instead of just plain water she would include some apple juice if she had it on hand. Start out on high for a short time, then switch to the lowest temp and let 'em go. It's ready when you say it is. Chunky or mushy is your choice. I like it very cinnamon-y.

I think a full cup of sugar is overkill, and I am a big fan of sweet things. Maybe eating this
uber sugary apple recipe of hers is what has sweetened TFW's attitude and created her new self.

Hmmm. I wonder who planted the seed in Mady's brain to be an actress? Seems to me she is much more interested in photography these days. Maybe Mady being an actress, say in commercials, is Kate's only hope for living off her kids. Maybe this is why Mady appears to be the favored child for now. The way she behaved when the show aired would make me doubt, if I was a producer, to hire her with temper tantrums like her mother.

Yeah, how many times have we heard her saying "If you met me in person...yada yada. If you give me the chance to show you the real me...yada yada" or something to that effect. If you have spent YEARS defending yourself, playing the misunderstood poor soul, blaming editing, paparazzi, dance instructors, neighbors etc etc...on how YOU'RE being

In many ways it's pretty insulting to viewers and readers when she pulls that card. She's saying hey look it wasn't me, it's YOU. You are just perceiving it wrong. You are being judgmental. You don't understand.

Personally I find that insulting. Viewers are perfectly capable of seeing her exactly for what she is and please don't try to tell them they don't know how to perceive her. And what they perceive smells like sh%t.

I haven't seen the Bachelor but I just read the article about Gia committing suicide and realized she was on Jake's season. Didn't know that. Jake was Kate's co-star on DWTS. Has she provided any words of sympathy or support toward her costar, who says he's "devastated" and that she was an angel?

Yes, CWS proved she's just as much of a shrew as she always was if not worse. She made Kendra CRY with all her completely unjustified criticism. The only thing she got out of the experience is feeling justified that her order was necessary because if not things would be "out of control" like they were for Kendra's child (which, they weren't at all.) Kendra also cried for the kids and how sad their lives were. That says it all.

TFW reveled in her nastiness during the show. She beamed with pride every time she insulted or slapped Jon. She looked like the cock of the walk every time she finished being rude or
ugly to someone, anyone, from crew members to
Jen Stocks to Mr. _____ Man.

It extended off camera to people at public book signings and photo opportunities to former nursing colleagues to store employees. So, you're right, nobody misperceived. TFW was throwing it into the viewer's faces. It could
not have been any plainer that she is a hateful person to almost everyone she encounters.

I get that this People article was a last-ditch effort for cookbook sales, but it could be one of the dumbest things she's done. The thousands of negative comments aren't helping her, and those who know how she lives will be so disgusted over her "living carefully and piecing and patching" comments when she's sitting with three cars in the driveway. I would think that even some of her fans will be turned off by her "poor me" comments and I hope that readers finally see, regardless of her being a changed woman, the hypocrisy of the whole thing.

It would be a different story if she had downsized, sold two of the cars, and found employment other than her blogging career which failed. She'd at least appear credible in an article about life after reality television if it could have been shown that her life indeed has changed, but when readers see that nothing really has changed, she's still living in a million dollar home with no reliable source of income, readers are going to say, "what the heck...how is that possible" and she comes across as looking like a phoney who is saying whatever she needs to say to sell her book, and once again she's dragging her children into it.. Some will believe it, especially the sheeple who have been buying (and making excuses for her) what she's selling for a long time.

#####
I think I understand what you're trying to say, but "privileged white woman comment" seems to me an unfortunate choice of words. I think most of us realize that TFW doesn't come from a place of lack and want, but (speaking from personal experience here) an impoverished childhood isn't limited to any one skin color--nor does a privileged upbringing, for that matter. To suggest otherwise can be perceived as racist, though I know you don't mean it that way.

Or does piecing and patching refer to her expensive hair weaves. Or the boys tripping over themselves in clothes 3 sizes too large. She fools no one, save Milo and a few other sheeple, with remarks like those. The negative comments into the thousands at People.com yesterday say otherwise. And her book sales next week, after the magazine issue hits the newstands, confirm this.

That's it in a nutshell. Most people aren't stupid when what you're trying to sell is so obviously fake. People start to get insulted after awhile that you think people would actually believe this. They take it that TFW, or anyone peddling such nonsense, thinks they're stupid. When you make someone think that you think they're stupid, often nasty comments ensue.

Even her own appearance suggests a woman with exorbitant amounts of money. Perfectly tanned, hair bleached, makeup perfect. This photo might have succeeded a little better if she toned it down, didn't look so perfect, had a $100 hair job instead of an $800, and maybe took some photos in their natural environment like sharing a modest home cooked meal together. But then you would see their McMansion kitchen, so that wouldn't work. Maybe at the park then at a picnic table with hotdogs. And kids in different clothes who don't look so photoshopped.

I would have put the kidnapped girl from San Diego on the cover of People this week and done a story about the new Amber Alerts to our cells. That story was huge. People often does covers on national stories like this, or at least they used to.

Excellent review Sillimom! All those lemons must be reason for the puckered look she has most of the time. I haven't read through the entire thread, but just some information on school nurses. In my area of the country (Chicagoland), school nurses are usually required to have a Bachelor's. I went to school with a woman who was an elementary school nurse with only LPN license. Her district changed policy and required a BSN. She loved her job so much (and they were holding her spot), that she went back for it. If I remember correctly, Kate only has a hospital certificate. She doesn't even have an Associates Degree (I think, could be wrong), which I believe is the minimal in order to sit the exam for a registered nurse today. I know she's an RN but things have changed A LOT in the past decade. If she wanted to get back into nursing (yeah, I'm cracking myself up too!), I believe she would have some serious c.e.u. (continuing education updates), plus a lot of classes. Also school nurse jobs are usually hard to come by as most nurses hang onto that job for the life of their career. Also she'd make a horrible school nurse. I shudder at the thought of her dealing with sick/injured children. She has no empathy - even for her own children. I think an ideal job for her would be working the phone for some pharmaceutical corp. They pay decent money to nurses to answer patient's questions. She could spend quality time with her favorite person (herself) and not have to deal with any prickly coworkers. At least not in person.

-------------

He also said that he broke down and cried. He and the gal he chose on that season broke up, and I read that he made the statement that if he had the season to do over again, he would have chosen Gia. She seemed like such a down-to-earth, friendly, sweet person on that show. Everyone appeared to like her and there was no pretentiousness on her part, or drama surrounding her. It's really a sad story and you just have to wonder what in the world possessed her to do this when she had so much going for her.

Kate probably doesn't even know. She's been too busy basking in the glow of the People cover. Speaking of which, those Twitterbots have been having a field day over there, but I guess Milo and the sheep are still in denial that they are all bought on Twitter -- they think that hundreds of fans just showed up out of the blue, ready to line up for that Friday purchase.

What she took away from CWS was the idea that she was justified in spending more time away from the kids and that she needed to take more time for herself. I think what Kendra was trying to say was that the kids need to have time away from their mom, doing fun, kid activities (although I could be wrong. I only watched the show one time on Hulu and it's been a while.).

Kendra got more out of the experience then Kate did, by far. Kate just had her martyr complex reinforced and got a paycheck and some tv time.

Ashton Kutcher is getting some privileged white man comments too and I think it's out of line. He was not "privileged." He had a special needs brother and came from a hard working family in the Midwest. His father worked in a factory. I loved every word of what he had to say in his speech.

For some reason some people seem to hate this idea that maybe, just maybe, you got to where you are because you worked harder, longer, better than everybody else. They always think it must have been just chance or because you're good looking or the right skin color or something. Even Kate seems to think this, she made some comment on DWTS about cheating or something, I can't remember the exact words, but I do remember thinking of course she thinks anyone who does well "cheated." Instead of you know, worked hard? It's odd.

Yes that's pretty much it. Kendra was trying to explain that Kate needs to loosen up and the kids desperately need to be let free once in awhile and that they had a lovely time at the indoor gym.

In Kate's twisted mind, and Deanna too, they took it as Kate needs to give herself permission for me time. Wtf? What a crock. This not true. She would still qualify to take the exam today. A hospital diploma is a type of college degree, and those graduates come out with more clinical experience than a BSN. Her license is current, anyone can look it up on the state licensing web page. She is required to do CE hours for renewal, which can be done online.

It is true that some employers require a BSN for new graduates and administrative positions. However, in nursing, experience is more important. An LPN is not the same as an RN--possibly, that was why she had to return to school? This BSN debate has been raging for the entire 35 years since I graduated, and it still is not required. And, if it ever is, all currently nurses who have passed the national exam will be grandfathered.

Having said that, since she has been out of nursing for so many years, she may need to take a refresher course to be hired. Anyway, never going to happen, so, moot point.

I can tell you from experience, Kate is full of it when she talks about how busy she is.

I am, in essence, a SAHM. I do teach music part time, two afternoons a week, but from 8:00 until 2:30, my time is my own really. Now, granted, I don't have as big a house as she does but I do have five people at home right now, so there is a fair amount of housecleaning to do. I spend about 15 minutes on dishes, 20 minutes sweeping and mopping, putting clothes in the washer is 5 minutes, putting them in the dryer is 5 minutes and folding and putting away is about 20 minutes. Vacuuming is about 15 minutes for the whole house, not including bedrooms. Bathrooms take about 20 minutes to clean - 10 per bath. So about an hour and a half to maintain my house.

That leaves me with another 4 and 1/2 hours to do as I please, which in my case involves volunteering for PTA, Girl and Boy Scouts, and some special education groups but also getting my hair done, getting a pedicure, playing games on Facebook and WoW, reading my favorite blogs, reading regular books, cooking, etc.

I get so irritated by the fact that she makes it sound like she is so busy, busy, busy in addition to all of her duties as a mom and the idea she never has time for herself is just insulting to those of us who are also SAHM. We know better.

I zipped over to YouTube because I had a difficult time imagining the tups haven't grown in 4 years. All 3 girls are wearing little green and pink stripped sundresses. I didn't watch the whole episode but what they were wearing that I saw wasn't what H was wearing when she got her braces off. They've definitely grown.

I just do not understand the sheeple. They really seem to think that TFW is just massively famous and popular. K+8 had dismal ratings. It was canceled. But they think that if she does something new, it will somehow be a huge success. How do they reconcile the poor ratings of K+8 with their expectations for a new show? How do they rationalize the failed cruise, CC firing, contract with The Stir cut short, embarrassing sales for the cookbook,and poor sales of IJWYTK? Everything she has done for many years has failed. Everything. But they seem to believe that she is going to burst upon the scene and becaome a huge star and show up everyone who ever doubted her. Somehow I don't think that is going to happen.

The People magazine cover tells us a lot. Those are no longer the adorable toddlers everyone fell in love with. They are ordinary-looking adolescents. The draw of the cute babies is gone. Jon is not there, so the draw of the conflict between Jon and Kate is gone, too. TFW has been unmasked as a very mean, abusive, narcissistic and demanding diva. The conflicts with Jon drew viewers, but as time went on TFW just got to be far too nasty to him. Then she was smacking Emeril, and then bullying the sky jump guy in NZ and the rafting guy on the RV trip. She was just vicious to any man who crossed her path, and nasty to the kids, too. We saw from the RV episodes that she expected the crew to wait on her hand and foot rather than "play" at their jobs. That is who she really is. She was not in survival mode. She was being herself. She can say that she made mistakes. She can say that she has changed. But she acted that way for so many years that I think it's fair to say that that is the real Kate.

Kris, my mistake! I never saw that bottom picture of H until just now. You're right. That is the same dress from the Farm to Table episode.

Anon for now... YOU are amazing, not TFW!

And anyone feeling that karma isn't coming Kate's way, take heart, it already has. She's a has-been RTV personality, which carries all the credibility of a snake oil salesman, she''s isolated, has very few friends, is disconnected from her family, hasn't held a job in 2 years, got miserably and publicly fired from CC, and has no companionship/love in her life.
I have no pity. It's all her own doing.
So do not feel that her life is soooooooo great, or enviable in many ways that really matter.
Most of us are far, far richer in the things that really matter in life.
I've been part of this blog long enough to know this is true.

Couponing with Kate... oh thank you, TFW. I needed a good laugh today. When you Google Coupon(ing) with Kate, all you get is her very humiliating firing by Scott from CC. Is her site up and running? It's nowhere to be found on the interwebs.
Has anyone got the over/under for how long this site will last?
I give it 6 months. Seriously, I wish we could have a pool. Winner gets a fish in paper dinner, loser gets IJWYTK AND ELF for their reading pleasure.
Hell yes she's buying content. It's absurd to think Kate is aggregating all that information with her French-tipped fingers. For those who have read Kate's own words about how she grifted countless thousands, perhaps even 6-figure's worth of freebies from companies ranging from A-Z, you have to chuckle at the shear hypocrisy of Kate fancying herself a Saving Guru.
Still. Laughing.

This is the most laughable, thing Kate said in that interview>
"There are plenty of people who would do anything to be on TV, but, I'm not that girl" and> "So everyone who thinks I'm starved for fame should know I do draw the line"
That is the most laughable 2 lines I've ever read. Coming from a person(sorry GIRL) who HAS BEEN trying to get a back on TV, and make drama to stay alive in the media using her kids as props. To sell a cookbook and to get media attention. What a tool!

****
Of course Kate could find *something* on RTV. She could be one of Brett Michael's skanks on Rock of Love.
Kate NEVER drew a line when it came to the kids; naked, toileting, puking, sick, emotionally suffering...
And she would be doing it today if she could.

I would not be surprised if She got TLC to pony up clothing for the children in multiple sizes, hence seeing the same outfits years later. that way, she wouldn't have to buy clothes for a very long time. Here's your lesson in grifting! It's probably why it seems to be the same dress from four years ago but it may be very well in a larger size she is wearing now vs. four years ago.

I'll bet you anything that TFW has been offered a show with Jon. Why else would she be adamant about not doing a show with him. The networks know what works. Jon & TFW worked but TFW on her own, not so much. The use of the kids couldn't even get her off life support. As many here have said, the kids aren't cute toddlers any more and truth be told they weren't all that interesting to watch on CWS.

The recipe reads more like a jam, which typically is chock full of sugar. For a jam, that's OK because it's a condiment used sparingly.

Tuckers Mom, professional licenses for health care specialties are issued by each state, requirements vary from state to state. Whether you are pharmacist or nurse or dentist or whatever. Many states have only continuing education requirements for nurses with no particular number of hours of clinical practice required. I found resource at ce.nurse.com/RStateReqmnt.aspx
In Pennsylvania it looks like 30 hours in two years its all that is required to renew license.

TFMJGs c/o site is passé, and she certainly doesn't seem to be promoting it at all. Did anyone here know about it before yesterday? Surely one of the excellent sleuths here would have mentioned it if she'd tweeted or blogged about it. C/O's are getting few and far between here. Some stores are putting severe restrictions on their use, and some papers aren't even including them anymore. The majority of the C/O's I see any more are for restaurants, and you have to subscribe for their newsletters/email lists to get them.

PJ's Momma --What a lovely and loving tribute to the joys of growing up in a big family. Whatever your issues are with your mother, it sounds like she did a good job in raising an intelligent and loving daughter.

I went to the store earlier today, and while I was in the checkout line, I looked over the magazine racks, trying to find the new TVGuide with the feature on "Burn Notice". Someone (not me, I swear) had turned all the front covers of People Magazine around! Guess they couldn't stand to look at TFMJGs smug face.

Anyone have any ideas why the ads on this page are in Spanish? At least, the ones I'm seeing are. I can read a little but I'm certainly not fluent in it.

Needless to say, I will not be wasting my money on this (or any) People magazine. Having said that, it still infuriates me TFW manages to get herself, (and sadly, her 8 children) on the cover of ANY magazine! I agree with the poster who predicted this will come back to haunt her. Living in the McMansion, having 3 fancy cars, sending her kids to private school, and all this by "piecing and patching". She SO underestimates people's intelligence, and believes by having 8 kids this will somehow garner her sympathy, thus giving her a free pass back to fame and (more) fortune.

I read somewhere online today that in the People interview she says a job on "The Talk" would be ideal. She is completely delusional,
and still thinks she has a chance at scoring a permanent place back on television. She has not changed, she will never change and she truly believes it is just a matter of time before she's back in the game.

My wish is that someone on the TODAY show will call her out on her crying poor-mouth. Someone needs to put a stop to her nonsense,
and just a few tough questions would do it.

But what does she have to show for this summer. Absolutely nothing. No fun cookouts, one sleepover with more burnt pizza. All of her posts to drive web hits are events that happened years ago at someone elses "TLCs" expense. Not even a simple game of mini golf, or a cheap amusement park or a day trip to the beach, only a few hours a way, easily doobable for a mom and kids, maybe a friend with kids along for added pair of eyes. Kate is lazy, lazy with the kids, lazy when their activities, lazy getting a job. Kate has not changed, it's still all about Kate. so the Audi wasn't in good condition anyone, get rid of, save on taxes and insurance, but no, she replaces it with a brand new, bigger Audi=more expensive for insurance and taxes. She's gone shoe shopping for 1/2 the kids, so either she bought for kids not with her or maybe she's got a grifted vacation from Milo again.

TFW finally made the announcement regarding her coupon site:

Kate Gosselin ‏@Kateplusmy8 3m
Announcing my NEW coupon site..Huge savings w 10,000+ coupons from over 3500 merchants! I'm saving $ with you! Enjoy!
http://couponsbykate.com

But----the link doesn't work. She must have copied it from one of her tweeties who also tweeted the link, because their link doesn't work either.

OOPS!!!

Not sure if anyone remembers me, I used to post here often. I lost interest in the Kate "saga" for a while, but followed tweets, etc. Long time posters may remember we were planning daughter's wedding about a year ago. I was feeling sad because of problems walking, bad hip, knee etc. Well daughters wedding was amazing, they are doing great, thinking about starting a family. Me, not so much. I need at least one new hip and knee and most likely each one the other side eventually. Hopping some day to have health insurance again. Husband works at good/great paying contract jobs, but they don't offer insurance. Cross your fingers I get approved for Social Security Disability, then I might have insurance to get me functioning again. I want to be an active grammy like my parents were to my kids. Anyway, I this was just a way to reintroduce myself again.

Looks like she finally got the link to work. Gotta laugh at this tweet:

Kate Gosselin ‏@Kateplusmy8 5m
Bear with me... My COUPON SITE is brand new...but check it out&start $aving (& thx for ur patience as I perfect it!) http://couponsbykate.com

Brand new? The first(and only) blog post is over a month old.

Is she going to "perfect" it, just like she has her personal website, which has been open for almost 2 years?

By the way-Happy Anniversary, Kate. Two years ago today, TLC cancelled your show and it was People who announced it first.

Strange that Kate announces her coupon site today, after it's been up awhile and was being discussed heavily here yesterday.

Lurking sheeple probably brought that to her attention.

''I'm having a hard time seeing how you learn and grow from bad behavior and change if you simultaneously have no regrets about such behavior. If you now know it's wrong why on earth wouldn't you also wish you hadn't done such things?''
~~~~~~~~
My theory about TFW's statement she made mistakes but has no regrets is that she's talking about beating her toddlers. I think that she believes her ''mistake'' was beating them in front of the crew and writing in such detail about it in her journal. She doesn't regret that she beat them, just regrets that people know about it.
Judging from the volumes of negative comments on People and ROL, it's clear to see that the sheep didn't hear the alarm to man their battle stations to do damage control!
&&&
I think their strategy this time around was to pretend it's not even happening and in fact that opposite was happening, that actually the magazine is flying off the shelves and that people around the world are thrilled about this.
Interesting strategy.
Kate Gosselin makes me sick.
This is a another reality star that knows what reality and tough times are really like:
Justin Guarini
"There was a time when I wouldn’t have been concerned about the amazing expense of eating at place like Green Symphony. Now, I budget. I have spent days skipping meals in order to make sure I have enough. To make sure my children, and my wife have enough. ...
Now, I’m unafraid to say that I am terrified. I am struggling to make each day meet the next without breaking down and curling up. Sometimes I envy people who sit at a desk all day (at least you know where your next meal is coming from). I’ll smile, and laugh,and joke, and entertain…because sometimes it’s the only way to keep the ghosts of regret and loss at bay. I am unafraid to be afraid, and in that fear I gather strength.
There was a time when I could have thrown down cash for a house, and had any number of lovers in and out the door. A flashy car and clothes to match. An ego to trump them all.
Now I rent a home filled with love. I have a wife whom I love and who loves me (me!) and who lifts me up. Children who give me cherubic-lippped kisses before I leave for work and who are the most delicious morsels of joy and peace and prosperity."
Using Silimom as my inspiration, I made a legitimate attempt to try to use TFW's new coupon site. I clicked on the only vender I was interested in, Best Buy. The first time I got a service unavailable error. I tried a second time. The second time I got a slew of offers, every single one for products I would never use. Car audio decks (I don't care), GPS systems (I use my phone's, aren't those on the way out?), an LG T.V. (I don't need a new T.V.), and a Samsung tablet (I use apple.) There was no generic 10% off or $5 off or anything like that I could actually use.
Conversely on Facebook today, they offered a $5 off coupon on any orders or $50. Since I almost always spend more than $50 at the grocery store, that's a win win for me. I clicked on the link, it was loaded to my card instantly, and as long as I remember to shop before the 20th, I'm good to go.
This coupon program she is using looks like you usually need to buy a very specific product to get the deal, and it's not any better than something you could find at the big web sites like retailmenot.
I forgot to say the $5 off was for Ralph's my local grocery store.
So Kate is starting her own "business" in couponing. She just can't seem to stick to one thing. Her own blog, News and Events, hasn't been updated for two years, and Inspiration is still Coming Soon. It's as though she has some kind of attention deficit...she was with CC, then The Stir, plus a clothing line that failed, and what happened to Wantable and all of the other things she was promoting? Then there's the failed cookbook, and this cookbook. She just can't seem to find her niche, and is floundering with too many irons in the fire. All of this seems to have one purpose, which is the avoidance of finding employment, such as in nursing, that would provide her with a steady income.
Ohh, shiney!!
Some narcisissts flutter big time from project to project, people to people. It wasn't common for me to hear "such and such is MY NEW BEST FRIEND." Every month there was a new best friend. Bizarre. Same with projects, one month it would be designing some kind of granola bar, the other wall panels for kids rooms, the next some class in fencing was the big thing. Flitter-flutter. I don't know why this is but this is exactly how Kate is too. I think they just suck whatever benefit out of whatever project and people, then get bored.
What I do understand is that our mistakes, as wrong as they were, sometimes teach us about life, so in that respect sometimes it's good that certain ones happen. It doesnt mean however we don't regret what we've done wrong.
To take a simple example, for instance sometimes the only way you can learn how to be careful with money is to blow all of your paycheck on some toy or vacation and then suddenly have nothing left for groceries. Many young people go through this. The experience can be good because it teaches you a good lesson in budgeting. But given the chance, I'm sure most people would prefer not to do that again and starve, and would change things. I think there is a difference between being glad you went through the experience because it taught you something about life, and actually being remorseful and vowing to change.
But I don't understand if, given the chance to go back in time, why you wouldn't do things differently, especially for mistakes that hurt people. Maybe you learned that you were a shrew in your marriage--so why wouldn't you want to go back in time and do it differently? Why don't you regret THAT? Why wouldn't you regret screwing up something as wonderful as marriage? That makes no sense. That to me is the essence of no regrets--if you had the chance to do it again would you do it differently.
I just checked out Wal-Mart. It says "Sorry, no coupons." As has already been mention, if she keeps this site up like she does her blog, it will probably always say, "Sorry, no coupons."
Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...
It used to be if you went to retailmenot you could almost ALWAYS find a 10, 20, or 25 % off coupon for any major retailer or even a $5 or $10 off with minimum purchase.
Those days have become few and far between. These industries are moving away from the coupon model. As someone pointed out yesterday, she's a day late and a dollar short.
Also? How long does it take to set up a simple content farm? She doesn't even have to do any WORK, the company sets up the code and she copies and pastes. Good lord.
You'd think TFW would want to keep her hair her naturally darker color. The blondeness next to her kids' asian hair makes them look that much more different.
Perhaps you should change your name to TFW's cart!
I checked out a few of the stores like Target, Macy's, etc. Most of the coupons I saw were product specific, and were listed under "Unreliable Coupons". I guess that's because they expire tomorrow,
Somehow that seems so fitting to find on her coupon blog. "Unreliable."
I was curious how the comments look like from the average article in People about a celebrity and their children.
I picked Curtis Stone with his son Hudson. A picture of Curtis in the kitchen with Hudson and an article about being a dad and what he feeds Hudson.
Almost all the comments just say aww Hudson is so cute and Curtis is such a sweet dad. A couple insiders said they've met Curtis and he's great. There were only a few negative comments, a few saying they wish they would get married before having a baby (they eventually married last June). But they weren't overly rude about it.
Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...
The other thing too is that I don't think she has mentioned coupons once she she was fired from CC.
We're supposed to believe she's a couponing mom and authority on this subject, and yet she never ever talks about it and even gets fired from their couponing job? I assumed she left that whole world behind when she was fired. I had no idea she was still a couponer.
It reminds me of Food Network's criticism of some of their stars, you lack authority. She lacks authority, period.
What happened to her passion for running and all of the marathons? Did that go by the wayside? I thought she wanted to be a fitness instructor, or have some kind of running/exercise show on television.
How's that ab thing selling? What the heck was it called? She reminds me of a traveling salesman from back in the day -- so many things in a wagon and you just pull them out as the spirit moves you. You'll always find someone gullible enough to buy what you're selling and then you move on to the next town.
Baw-hahhaa. That is such a funny image. TFW, pulling up in her little rickety wagon, pots and pans banging against the side, donkey braying. I wish I had the photoshop skills for that.
She pulls up to your farm. God an ab machine for ya here! No? How about a monthly makeup kit? What's that, only prostitutes wore makeup in the 19th century? How about a vacation home rental in the deep south in the height of summer? Or cruise during hurricane season, that sounds good right? I'll even come along! Hm how about some coupons for 50 cents off obscure products no one ever buys anymore like GPS systems? I've got that too! I can even start a marching band in your town, right here in River City!
I don't know where Milo Kraitz shops, but did she really think that a magazine heading for the newstand tomorrow was already sold out at her market today? My market had the old issue as of an hour ago.
Hmm, maybe this cover is really to mark the anniversary of being cancelled by TLC. And what are you doing now KG? Oh, late to the coupon train. And not much more. A gig on The View would be perfect? Do you hear the laughter across the land?
