Rest in peace, Lorna Tuck Colbert

When your son gives a eulogy like this, you know you've done a good job.

Stephen Colbert's mother had eleven children, mostly boys. When Stephen was 10, his father and two of his brothers were killed in a plane crash. This single mom didn't let tragedy bring her and the rest of the family down. Colbert describes a demonstrative mother who, despite a gaggle of kids, was not afraid to let her hair down around her children. "Hugs never needed a reason in our house," Colbert says. Singing, dancing and even pretending to faint on the kitchen floor were encouraged.

"She was fun," Colbert says. "We were the light of her life, and she let us know it 'til the end."

I remember Hannah did that with her eyes on a couch interview.I thought she was just goofing around but maybe imitating mom? Kate did say she thought Asian people were more beautiful than Caucasian,(reverse racism??) and in MB she mentions she was thinking of adopting a part black baby boy.She speaks in a demeaning way to everyone so I'm not sure if she is racist or just generally offensive.

Regarding the sumo or geisha wig she was wearing...remember The Office episode where they dressed up as sumo wrestlers and wore those inflated suits with wigs? Funny stuff except for one important thing...they DID NOT pull their eyes slanted. I absolutely don't get the point of her photo because she sure wasn't dressing up for a costume party or doing a funny skit on a TV show. For whatever reason, she thought it was hilarious to put that plastic wig on and pull her eyes slanted. She thinks she's a riot and always hooted at her own lame jokes, but I never got her sense of humor. Oh well. I don't get doing something like that when your kids are of mixed race.

******
First, I don't recall this at all, nor any discussion of it. Did this really happen?

Second, as someone else already correctly pointed out, ZiggyFlo is showing her inaccurate perception of gay people.

As to Kate pulling her eyes back and upward, as if to make them slanted - typical Kate behavior. We already know she's the most tactless, clueless, and abrasive mother in the northern hemisphere.

Millicent said...

Chefsummer - yes, I do some things in the privacy of my own home that I would not do in public. Say, flossing while watching tv. Burping really loud, or passing gas.

But I am not racist, in public or in the privacy of my own home. I dislike people who are racist. I wish they would re-think their points of view and accept that we are all humans first and foremost, and all created equally. That opinion is the same whether I am in public or in private.

I am not conventionally religious, but I do believe the bible does have many helpful guidelines on how to live and do right by others. Matthew 6:1-4 reads:
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Although this is specifically about doing acts of charity, I believe it applies to other behavior as well. So if we put on a false face in public and pretend that we believe everyone is equal and should be treated equally, but in private we use derogatory slurs about others, our true nature is still there and being revealed to whatever god we believe in.

One of the comments on ROL states that this is no different than kids running around, slapping their hands against their mouths and imitating "indians".

I have 2 boys aged 8 and 6, and they don't even know what that means. A lot of this stereotypical behaviour is NOT being passed down to the next generation.

This stuff is not acceptable anymore. Most books, cartoons, movies, etc. teach inclusion and acceptance. The majority of kids are not watching Bugs Bunny now.

Look at the current U.S. view on same sex marriage. I'm Canadian, but I read that the majority of the American population agree with it's legalization . I think that indicates that there is a BIG shift in society today. For the positive, in my opinion.

What is she fussing about? I just watched this video. It's at the end. Jon didn't take anything out of Kate's closet. The dress was downstairs and one of the "littles" brought it to him. He protested about wearing a dress, but then he said it was for his girls and he relented.

Kate isn't a racist, she's a narcissist. Everyone is less than her in her opinion. I don't think she discriminates in that sense.

Was Kate's photo in poor taste? Sure. and obviously some people found it very offensive. Can I speculate as to what was going on when it was taken? Of course.

I think it's likely Jon took the photo. I think he and Kate were in the garage, She was likely cleaning up or going through old Halloween costumes or dress up clothes some fan had sent them, came across the plastic sumo hairpiece and, deciding to poke fun at the fact that everyone in her immediate family had asian features and she didn't, put on the hair piece and pulled her eyes out to make herself look asian. I think this was a private moment between her and whomever took the picture. I don't think she was trying to be hurtful or discriminatory.

Do I think this photo is worth more than just an eye roll? No. I think the only similarity to the Paula Deen situation, which is a workplace discrimination suit which I think Joy assessed beautifully based on her reading of the deposition, is that you have two women who don't think about the fact that their actions and words are going to be reported in the media. Paula Deen is wrapped up in her own safe, comfortable world, still more of a prisoner to her anxiety and agoraphobia then she'd probably want to admit. Kate is a narcissist. Both are out of touch with the real world it appears to me.

I think racism and prejudice are interesting topics. Imo, whether we want to admit this, we are still a tribal society. We are more integrated but we are still tribal in our thinking. And with that tribal thinking comes stereotypes, some valid others not, about groups who are different then ours. With tribal thinking comes prejudice.

The issue for me isn't that some people think they are better than others. Prejudice is part of human nature, in my opinion, and I don't know that we will ever fully get rid of it in our social consciousness, although I think we have made progress. And when I meet an Archie Bunker, I'll debate his opinions with him or her because I think it's worth my time to discuss it.

The larger issue for me, however, is when people are denied their human rights based on their race, sex, creed, sexual orientation, cognitive ability, etc. The issue for me is when people feel they are trapped in a job putting up with behavior that makes them uncomfortable and feel less then human. And I will speak out against those types of injustices to the best of my ability to do so. I will support causes that work to eliminate that type of injustice. That is worth more of my time then getting upset over a photo that Kate Gosselin took 5-6 years ago poking fun at the fact that out of all the people in her family, she didn't look Asian enough and ha, ha, wouldn't it be funny to see what Kate would look like if she was Asian?

I guess I'm just trying to put this photo in perspective. I think Robert released it, I think he is trying to jump on the anti-Paula bandwagon. I hope it accomplishes whatever he was trying to do by releasing it. For me, the photo rates a "meh".

After having my husband return home for several months, we are moving forward with divorce. He is extremely sick--alcoholic and untreated mental illness, and I am looking forward to some peace after the continual drama and chaos for the last 32 years. In answer to your question, Admin (who moves every 5 years?), I can answer that. People who have addicts and/or alcoholics in their lives. We have moved every 5-6 years since we were married. In recovery lingo, it is called taking the geographic cure. It sure sounds like Paula's brother engages on some compulsive sexual acting out behavior. Very common for people raised in addictive homes to have a blind spot when it comes to their relationships.

To Asians, it is not "meh." Professor, lawyer and author Ellen Oh has a blog post about Miley when she did it. It brought tears to my eyes and I hope it will help you understand why it's not "meh.":

She's not 2, she's a teenager. She knows better. Now I wouldn't go so far as to sue her, even to me that seemed excessive. But anyone who would brush off her behavior by saying she's just a kid and we should just leave her alone, fails to see the problem of high profile public figures who by their actions may affect a whole new generation of children. One of the commenter's wanted to know why only Cyrus was forced to apologize why not the other kids. Well they should all apologize, but only Cyrus is the public figure. Only Cyrus is idolized by millions of young girls throughout the world. So only Cyrus really needs to come out with a real apology.

One commenter said what's the big deal, everyone has probably once in their life pulled the slanty eyed face so leave her alone. Why does this fact make it alright? Maybe this person is right. Maybe some non-Asians have pulled this face in private or public at least once in their lives and laughed about it. Maybe they really don't know that it is hurtful. Ok - so maybe it is time to educate them. As an Asian American, I can tell you that the slanty eyed thing is not only offensive it is extremely demoralizing and demeaning to us. It hurts.

A kid at school pulled this on Angus last year when she was 6. She didn't understand why he was doing this, but she knew it hurt her. She knew it was insulting to her. She came home depressed and a little bit shaken up. Her first experience with racial ugliness. I can't protect her from it. I can only teach her to speak up for herself. I have to teach her the right way to act. For me, I always reacted with my fists first. But for my kids, I am teaching them to verbalize and stand strong.

If we don't speak up, people won't know what hurts us. So a public outcry over Cyrus's actions is indeed a good thing, if only to tell the world that this type of behavior is absolutely wrong and will not be tolerated any longer.

Not saying that the issue is Meh--I don't think anyone has said that. This is obviously a private picture that was never meant to see the light of day. That is why I said Meh...it isn't exactly news that Kate is insensitive--I just can't work up any outrage over this particular thing because it is to be expected. Sounds like the Miley Cyrus episode was public, so the context is clear and it is therefore easier to judge what she did as racist (I haven't read anything except what was posted here).

Paula's offense created a hostile work environment and she is rightfully being held responsible. She is a known liar and opportunist--just add racist to the list.

Kate is a social dinosaur, as is Paula Deen, and, thankfully, people like them are going extinct before the world's eyes. Racism exists, as does ignorance. Put them together, and it is ugly and wrong, no matter who said it or why.

I definitely think Robert Hoffman had something to do with this photo of Kate mocking Asians being made public. He mentioned the photo in his book, so he knew about it and probably had access to it. he warned Kate that if she tried to stir something up, he'd release more dirt on her. This is just an opening shot. There's more to come, and I'm betting it makes this picture look like child's play. It has to be driving kate nuts that neither Jon nor Hoffman seem to be backing down. She has always been able to bully her detractors into submission, but now she's on her own, without TLC's legal department to fight her battles for her. She thought this lawsuit would make Hoffman retract everything, and then Jon would give up his parental rights and she would move the kids to LA and be the newest Real Housewife.
Well, that plan only works if the people she's bullying don't decide to fight back. They're fighting back, all right, and I predict that Kate will soon find out just how much she has to lose. I have to say, I admire Hoffman for standing up to Kate, and Jon for refusing to let her walk all over him. I bet she doesn't even know how to react to that. Can't you just hear her lawyers joyfully shouting, "KA-CHING!!!"

I suppose I'm just perverse enough to take great pleasure in watching KK's threats/lawsuits and allowing her fans to trash the father of her children, have no effect on Robert, who has a whole lot of bad things about KK in his possession that he hasn't used YET.

Every day that Jon doesn't take the bait of bullyville, KK or her fans is another day for me to admire Jon for his silence. When he was finally through with KK, he is through!! Good for you, Jon...keep ignoring them all, and be a good example for your children!!

I'm probably slow on the uptake, but after seeing so many (!!) tweets/articles pairing Paula Deen with Kate Gosselin, I'm thinking, "Hmmmm, could this possibly be cookbook related?"

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Shelby, I agree 100% with you. Playing devil's advocate, but the only difference I see is that I believe Miley intentionally tweeted that photo to the public, whereas there is no argument that Kate took this photo in private and didn't release it herself.

However to me, that distinction makes no difference. Someone else even said this when it comes to Paula Deen. Just because most of her behavior was behind closed doors doesn't excuse it. Is it okay to never tell racist jokes at work, school or in public, but to tell them every night to your kids over dinner? I think it's not okay. I think there is no difference. You are a closet racist and what's more you've proven you KNOW it's wrong because you are so careful to hide such behavior in public. If Kate thinks this is all in good fun, a joke, playful, her kids laughed too, nothing wrong with it, then why didn't she tweet the photo herself? Because she....knows....it's....wrong.

In a strange way, I almost have more respect for those who own their prejudices and proudly put them on display. At least they are being who they are and at least that way they've invited dialogue from those around them who disagree. Keeping such things private suggests guilt. It suggests you DO know such behavior could be very hurtful to others. It suggests deviance. I earlier said there's no difference whether things are done in public or private. I changed my mind. It's WORSE to do them in private. At least in public, you can get feedback from everyone else, learn from other cultures why things you may say or do are hurtful (from fine people like Ellen Oh), and you can be pressured to stop such nasty behavior. If it's private, no one will ever know and you will end up like Paula Deen, living all 66 years of your life as a classless racist jerk bringing down everyone around you.

On another note, Miley Cyrus is also according to many sources (and common sense) severely mentally unstable, far more than the average person and far more than even Kate ever was. It's not an excuse, but it's sort of an apples and oranges comparison. Mentally ill do and say things that are not socially acceptable, that is part of what mental illness is. Perhaps if she were in a more stable place and receiving treatment, she would never do such a thing and would be horrified she did that. Nonetheless, Miley Cyrus apologized for her behavior even if it was driven by her break with reality. An apology never hurt.

Mocking - To mimic, as in sport or derision. See Synonyms at ridicule.

Luke's mom, agree. The kids were very young. You cannot explain to them why it's just a joke when mommy does it, mommy trying to be more Asian, but it's not a joke if another child "bullies" them with such behavior at school. Yes sheep, such behavior between children is bullying. Actually, I don't know how you explain why one is a joke and one is not at any age.

I think Tucker said her sense of humor is always at the expense of others and I've said this before as have others. There is hardly any joke she makes that cannot find its root in somehow bringing someone else down especially her own loved ones. There is no other dimension to her humor. There may be a place for some people, in some contexts, for light teasing and "ribbing" at their expense. Sometimes, loving teasing among people who love each other is one way to show affection. However, many people hate it and so you shouldn't do it to them at all, and it should certainly not make up the bulk of your sense of humor. And it should certainly not be body image teasing or racist behavior that is part of the ribbing.

I call people who don't want to read things like Paula Deen's deposition (or at least get the information summarized somewhere else if they want to at all have an educated opinion on the situation) low information voters. This buzz word has been thrown around a lot lately but it's so spot on.

These are who Paula's devoted fans are. This is probably how an average sheeple would be too. They either don't want to see the deposition, are intimidated by it, or have read it but don't really understand it. I am not talking about people who don't have time this week for it or aren't that interested in the story as long as those people aren't blindly defending her to the death.

The Deposition was not particularly long, difficult to understand, or full of legalese. It was short, simple and easy to comprehend. But sadly we've fostered a culture where you get your information about an issue from a few tweets and maybe a quick blurb on the internet. People don't seem as interested anymore in really understanding something in depth and I find that sad. But then, the Paula Deens, the Kate's, the Casey Anthony's all count on low information voters who don't really care to understand something so they can continue their scams.

Probably the minority here (which is why I like it here, we don't all have to agree) but, I'm one of those people who thinks 'cultural sensitivity/political correctness' has reached the level of absurdity in this country.

Hardly anyone can claim to be completely 'Caucasian' or 'African' or 'Asian' or 'Hispanic' in the United States of America in this day and age. We are the TRUE melting pot. Which is why people from every country / of every culture apply for and wait in line for YEARS to immigrate here.

(Two of my nieces became citizens last year! So proud! They taught me more about this country's history, while helping them study for their tests, than I ever learned in school.)

That said, what makes Kate Gosselin special?

We see this happen every day! The cry of racism against political parties, celebrities, royalty.

She wants attention. She got it.

I honestly can't say that I agree with it, but what's good for the goose ... and all that.

Hoosier and everyone I so appreciate the civil discussion, that's what makes this blog a great place to be. I actually do agree with you that culturally insensitivity has been taken too far however some of the examples where I've heard people say people are being "racist" when they were not, is for instance, if someone holds the viewpoint that immigration should be strictly regulated. Or someone holds the viewpoint that a holiday or holidays most students celebrate should be celebrated in school. To me, that is mixing up racism with many other things that have nothing to do with racism. I think some people mix up a discussion about a certain group versus actively tearing down that group, either intentionally or intentionally. To use the school example, if someone said I only think holidays that WHITE people celebrate should be marked, that to me is racist. However, if a person says well I think school should celebrate whatever happens to be the holiday most kids in that school celebrate and other holidays can still be discussed and learned about, IMO that is not racism, in most scenarios.

However, I still do think we should draw lines, and where that line is drawn is admittedly an arbitrary one and may even change as society evolves. In that case, it's helpful I think to turn to the major spokespeople for the group themselves. For instance, do Asian Americans themselves in large numbers take offense to such a thing? We learned with Miley Cyrus that in fact they do. Major AA groups wanted an apology from her. Major Asian bloggers and the highly educated and experienced from the community explained why it is offensive. In my opinion, it's been rather well established at least for several decades now that slanting your eyes is derogatory. And much of that has come from a strong push from Asians to make sure that such things are NOT accepted by them or others as the norm, as funny, as acceptable. To me, I think there has been enough of a strong force from Asians themselves that we can say for sure it's offensive, racist, and it should not happen anymore at all, under any context. This same sort of evolution happened with the N word, and many, many other things we "used to do." I hope that makes sense.

There is a line somewhere and that line is different for each individual.

I personally draw it at using the N word, discounting the Holocaust, not letting Christmas or Easter be celebrated, saying 'Happy Holidays' instead of 'Merry Christmas.'

Others draw their lines at different points on the scale. A lot of that depends on where you come from and what you are accustomed to.

I'm a mid-west girl! I'd love to have some of the cultural experience and travel that a lot of the posters here have had. Since I don't, it's nice to read their opinions and why they think the way they do.

I may never be able to afford to travel outside my little comfort zone here in the Mid-west. This blog has opened my eyes to many different people, lifestyles, cultures, opinions! I love it!

To be able to HEAR one another and understand their viewpoint and/or discomfort is where this country has gone awry.

We HAVE to get there. We HAVE to be willing to LISTEN and NOT JUDGE.

That makes this a GREAT PLACE! KUDOS to everyone here, because that truly happens on this blog.

There is always a target out there that fits in with our personal smallness. Large people have been targeted as lazy slobs and have been fighting that image for years. Kentuckians have been called hicks, when I know for a fact most of us are not. Southerners are told they sound uneducated even if they make the exact same speech as a person from Connecticut who sounded oh so intelligent. Chefs are called food snobs and McDonald's fans are tastebud deprived. There's no end to the list.

That geisha picture of Kate might have been a private moment in the garage. However, your "private moments" when no one is looking show your true essence - who you really are. And if Kate doesn't know this by now, in this day and age there is probably somebody watching to capture your "private moment" for posterity. Just ask you kids, Kate.

There have been many wise words today but I think this is one of the best comments of the day. When people see a very large group of people upset about something, they should not clam up like the sheeple do and refuse to hear or understand why they are upset. Rather you should listen, digest, seek to understand. Even if at the end of the day you still feel the same, the point was the other person was heard. Sadly, these people don't want a dialogue about racial stereotypes as what is happening here. They just want to defend their queen. The same thing happened to Paula Deen's fans. There is no interest in progress, there is no opening for change. This is a sad, sad way to exist.

Just to use Ellen Oh for an example, not every single person agreed when it came to Miley Cyrus. But you should be willing to listen to her perspective as an educated, experienced Asian American with a very young Asian American child. She has something to offer this discussion even if you don't agree. She should be heard instead of shouting in her face she was just joking now lighten up and go away!!

I think a lot of appropriate behavior needs to be taught. Who knows, without ever being told, perhaps many people would slant their eyes in jest. But it is education, and I don't mean just schooling, I mean the hearing each other that Hooser talked about, that has taught us otherwise. Although I don't remember the moment, I am sure at some point as a child someone told me it's not nice to make fun of Asian eyes. As well as it's not nice to use the N word, etc., and various other things society no longer accepts. You must reenforce appropriate behavior with children, set good examples, and you must build the kind of culture of appropriate behavior you seek.

I've been reading the posts all day, and appreciate the civil tone the discussion is taking.

I can't decide what I think. The Kate photo is obnoxious, but I can't say I'm surprised by it.

Kate is classless, clueless, and an idiot. IMO. Anyone who goes walking thru the streets of China Town shouting, "Look kids! They're speaking Asian!" is obnoxious.

Especially when said kids are part Asian.
And they're yours!

Or calls the professional security guard "Mr. Chocolate." How demeaning.

Should she be vilified for the photo? I don't know. I kinda vote no. Obnoxious, offensive? Yes. And it says everything about her...poor taste, low class, crass, racist, bigot, what have you. So many words apply to her.

But it was a private photo, not meant for public consumption.

Doesn't make it any less obnoxious, I guess. I don't give her a pass on it.

Maybe where I'm struggling is that the photo was obtained under possibly iffy circumstances. Legal, but iffy.

I don't know why I'm struggling with this one. There's something about this situation that isn't sitting right with me, but I can't figure out what it is.

I have no tolerance for that kind of behavior, and find it extremely offensive, so why am I struggling? I don't know.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Mel I do kind of get what you're saying in terms of not being able to put your finger on it. There is an undertone here I feel as well.

To me, it feels like Kate is in sort of an underground war. With perhaps Robert, I'm not sure. And each punch hits deeper and deeper. Where does it end? What is the end game? What does either side want? What do they seek to accomplish. How much more will come out that will shock, appall and anger?

That doesn't take away from the issues with the picture IMO, but, it is sort of an ongoing theme here that is probably going to boil over eventually. And one sense I do have is that whatever is going on here it is very much out of most people's control, certainly not in our control. I wish everyone would call a truce and I've said that a long time.

OT: Much Ado About Nothing is new film of the Shakespeare play directed by Joss Whedon. It is fabulous, fun, romantic, hilarious, entertaining in every way. What makes it more entertaining is to know it was made in twelve days, and filmed entirely at joss Whedon s house, and he had just finished editing The Avengers movie and did this to do something completely different artistically.
Highly recommended. Perfect chick flick, perfect date movie, perfect for Shakespeare lovers, perfect for fans of the Whedonverse - spot the actors!, perfect for comedy fans, perfect for film students to see how you take classic known material and make it new, perfect for Nathan Filion fans because he is hilarious and steals the scenes he is in.
It is such a good movie! An antidote to big budget action movies, which I love, but you can only see so many before you get bored by yet another explosion.
Go see Much Ado About Nothing.

FYI said...

Kate has responded about the photo on her website. She said that a fan sent her the wig, and she and Jon were goofing around taking pictures of each of them wearing it.

"This was a happy memory of mine. It was a happy time for me and Jon, smiling and “goofing off” together. Jon and I were opening fan mail together one afternoon — which often filled the garage of our Elizabethtown home — and when we opened this plastic Asian dress up wig sent from a caring fan, we smiled, each taking turns posing in it and snapping photos (on my phone) of each other. Naturally, I “slanted” my eyes to show him my best Asian impression, which made him smile."

She goes on to say:

"I married an Asian. I have eight biracial children therefore I’m quite certain that I’m the last person that could be called a racist. I learned to cook Korean foods from Jon’s mom and grandmother. I couldn’t be more proud of my eight beautiful children and wouldn’t change anything about them or their heritage. They are absolutely perfect just the way they are.

God loves each of us equally. We are each created perfectly in His eyes. In this family, we don’t see color or preference, we see qualities and hearts. Those photos taken on my phone were later uploaded to be saved on the home computer…..the same source of other private information that was taken and has since been made public, without my consent."

So in this statement, is she admitting that the journals are hers?

I'm glad that she addressed it and just didn't let it fade away. But why address it on her website, rather than issue a statement to the media? Oh right--she wants the hits.

I share the sentiment Mel. Yes, the photo is tactless, tasteless, obnoxious, rude etc...truly Kate, really.

But what doesn't sit with me is the anonymous posting and the timing which was an obvious attempt to tie it in with the Paula Deen thing. I mean, katedeen, really?

I'm not convinced Robert Hoffman posted the pic. To his credit, he has owned everything he's put out there so far. Why would he all of a sudden decide to be anon? If he wasn't worried about the legalities of how he obtained her journals, why would one pic be of any concern.

I don't know. I guess what bothers me is that the whole thing just reeks of smear campaign instead of useful revelation. If she had posted the pic herself, by all means, have at 'er.

Since she didn't and it's obviously a private photo, I guess I just think it's crossing a line.

There's a lot of grey area here.

But then, when has Kate ever said she was sorry for anything?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I actually buy her story that basically they were goofing off with a fan gift, and it seems to soften the blow that Jon himself was encouraging her. It is not my sense of humor, but I get that they were being the sort of oafs that they can both be with quite bluntly a rather unsophisticated sense of humor. And I understand she is upset it was released without her consent, I really do. Many people may have private pictures they wouldn't want released to millions, albeit hopefully not racist ones. They probably just should have played around and NOT taken pics. Once the pics were taken, anything could happen. Your phone could get lost, etc. As a celeb you need to be careful.

But the fact of the matter is it WAS released, and whether she approves of it she needs to apologize for anyone it offended. It does not matter the context of how it came about, what matters is she has many fans who look up to her who need to hear that this is not okay. This she will never understand.

I think it's funny she admits the files were her. Well that settles that, she's a child abuser.

I also buy that the kids were getting old enough back then to notice we all look like Daddy but mommy is different. Perfectly normal. But why encourage them to be so preoccupied with it? Why constantly bring it up? Mommy looks this way because Mommy's ancestors are European. Daddy looks this way because Daddy's ancestors are Korean. But we all have the same hearts and I love you. That's it, move on. Don't encourage an obsession with differences.

It is nice to know she could laugh with Jon at some point. At some point, the marriage was fun. Why can't she remember that when she trashes him? She picked him, and for quite while, she seemed to be very happy with her decision.

I'm like a few on here who are confused by this whole thing. I wonder if this is a case of racism or if it's just Kate being stupid. We know historically that she just doesn't think before she says or acts. She blurts out and does whatever she wants at the moment because she thinks it's cute and an attention-getter. We've seen this over and over again. It's really nothing new.

Could this whole fiasco be just Kate being Kate and doing what she always does? Perhaps, in her mind, there was nothing racist about it...she was being immature (nothing new there) and just did it. Yes, it was offensive and never should have been done, and she gets no passes for it, but this is Kate stuck in her middle-school years, thinking whatever she does is funny and harmless, without giving any thought to the fact that this photo might surface and all hell might break loose.

She just doesn't think, and she never will. This time one of her actions came back to bite her...big time.

Melissa yes. So many of us have said that emotionally she is stuck in middle school. And that is exactly what this is. This is the action of a middle schooler who did not think. Much like most of her behavior and choices, the level of maturity to her thought process is minimal. I don't know what is causing such a stunt in her emotional growth, but it's very sad to see it suddenly come back to bite her. Yes yes she didn't want the picture released but that's beside the point, her immature behavior came back to bite her finally.

And much like a middle schooler, she can't even woman up and say she's sorry. She can't even do that. She does not have the emotional maturity to breathe the words an adult breathes when they have done wrong. And for that I'm very sorry for her. It's a terrible example for her children.

@Kateplusmy8 Sad how folks can take innocent things& create a monument of controversy out of it! We know YOU..not a prejudicial bone N you!

Good grief, Milo. Shut up. You do not know her, and you have no idea about any of the bones in her body, even though you'd like to.

This woman annoys me more than Kate does.

And she couldn't THINK to write, "I apologize if anyone was offended."

Did Kate write that explanation, or did her "rep" have a hand in it?
