Mediocre hero does fame right

Charles Ramsey is everything an overnight celebrity can be

An unexpected hero emerged yesterday out of the shocking story of three girls kidnapped in Ohio a decade ago who are now free. Neighbor Charles Ramsey, with his backwards baseball cap, missing teeth and colorful storytelling skills, helped kick down a door (half eaten Big Mac in hand) to save the girls from their horror.

In these days of internet and social media, people can become instantly famous, and possibly rich. Many of them screw it up, greedy for more fame and money. However Ramsey has handled his overnight success with amazing fortitude. Here's where he went right:

1. He's humble. He doesn't see himself as a hero. He was just being a Christian neighbor.
2. He's not greedy. He doesn't want any reward money because as he tells it, whipping out his paycheck, he has a job. Besides, he knows the girls need it more.
3. He's not trying to hide who he really is. Ramsey speaks his mind, from the postal system to 9-1-1 operators, to realities about race relations, he calls it like he sees it, even if it takes a curse word or two to get the point across. Ramsey's not polished, doesn't have the best grammar, and at times meanders through a story, but at least he's honest (and often hysterical). Something we see so little of these days on T.V.
4. Anderson Cooper treated him with such dignity it was like he was interviewing the president. Because respect when earned should be freely given, Bro.

As for McDonald's? Stand by, they told Ramsey, we'll be knocking.

Does anyone remember the episode around the tups second birthday (Jon said they had two six year olds and six two year olds) where they visited the hospital where the tups were born? Kate yelled at Jon for not putting the tups good shoes on, and when they got there it was muddy and she yelled at him for not knowing that and telling her so she wouldn't have had them wear their good shoes. Anyhoo...I remember the hospital staff being really underwhelmed about seeing them. The nurse at the door got the tup's name wrong, and you could tell Kate was annoyed. I think the hospital staff despised her, and did not even seem happy to see the tups.

Wishing a happy Mother's Day to the mothers of children, and those children with mothers, may yours be a lovely day however you spend it. I feel fortunate to have had a whole weekend with my grown children and grandchildren, in groups and as a whole. We are also awaiting the imminent arrival of a new grandbaby.

As for Kate and her girlish squeals and posturing about breakfast in bed, a shout out to impress her 6 twitter friends, a resounding meh. Like you even let those kids in the kitchen.

Ah, this must have been the first time (literally!!!!) in 2 years that Kate left her house.
*huge eyeball roll*

Speaking of the kids' names, a couple days ago, someone tweeted Kate that she named her son Aaden. She must not have gotten the memo that NO ONE, EVER, ANYWHERE may name their son Aaden, spelled A-a-d-e-n.
The nerve!

The fact that the Gosselin sextuplets turned nine yesterday makes me want to cry.

What are you going to do next year when they turn 10? Lock yourself in your room for a week, sobbing hysterically and refusing to eat?

Geez...

Seriously, get a grip.
The children don't know you and the fact that you know SO MUCH about them via their show is tragic.
Now that's cryable.

I can't remember where I came across it but I read something once about some psychologists saying it's actually far more damaging to development than you would think to play with things too babyish for the age.

Those kids are going to be hearing "aldergator" and "Hanna poops in her unnawears" when they're 30.
Of course, Kate will never "set the record straight" and say that the kids can actually pronounce the words correctly now, so let's stop infantalizing them, thank you very much.

Wow, now your pregnancy stories are truly harrowing. FAR more than Kate's "pity me" bed rest.
Kate had no gestational diabetes, or preeclampsia, just careful feeding and monitoring to bring the tups as close to due date as possible. By all accounts, the delivery went seamlessly and Kate left the hospital quickly. No complications that put her very life in danger, like your pregnancies did.
In fact, Kate put herself in more danger to get her tummy tuck--that's no small surgery!
I'll bet you don't hold your difficult pregnancies over your kids' heads like Kate does. I can see when the tups turn 40, Kate will gather them around and tell them how hard they were to carry, her pain, her tiny stomach, her huge girth and 4000 CALORIES A DAY!

In the photos, Kate's plate is unused & empty yet the kids are already eating. They used to say a (maybe fake) grace before a meal.
* *******
I call fake on the grace before meals. When they showed the kids saying grace in S.C., Ashley led the prayer and the kids seemed to mumble along. They didn't know it.
How do I know? My family said grace before dinner every single day and by that age, I could say grace in my sleep.
"Bless us oh, Lord, and these thy gifts..."

Did anyone else find those bday photos sad? Not one friend or relative and I'm sure Kate will never, ever invite Jon over to have bday dinner with his kids.
So sad. No party. I wonder if their relatives attempt to send cards and gifts...

I agree the breakfast is skimpy- I don't know why she needed a 'special order' as that's all she ever has.Sweet note with the bell though.

As for the toys being too young for nine, I would say it depends- these girls may like to act out imaginary 'mother and child' scenes with stuffed critters for reasons I think we know...by ten they'll be into 'older' items I'm sure. Kate's days of complete control are numbered.

Wow, that breakfast looked grim. Most people with eating disorders have realized they can't control the world or all events around them, but they CAN control what they eat so they use that as a means to try and cope. I think Kate has realized she has faded into oblivion and that is pretty much beyond her control, so now her loss of control has morphed into an eating disorder.

And I don't believe for a minute that she is running much, if at all. So, that is another factor. She is barely eating, so she can stay super slim without exercising. There is just no way she could be running miles and miles (like she states every so often) on the amount/type of food she is eating.

Midnight Madness said...

Happy Mother's Day Everyone!

Tucker, you are so right. I do not hold what I went through over their heads, nor do we often talk about it. In fact I had to stop and think about my pregnancies to remember the actual details because I am now so far past that!

What we do talk about, are the facts that relate to the kids. There are some very personal stories for each of them that make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside, or happy when we tell them.

Kate talks about how tired and in pain SHE was when she finally got to the NICU to see them that night. I have never heard her speak publicly about her first thoughts when she saw them that night. Yes, they were healthy and they were perfect. But nothing more.

I would like to think she is keeping those thoughts private, but time and time again, we have learned she keeps nothing about those kids private. I know Kate loves those kids, but I also know she loves those kids because of the fame they brought her.

Meagler said...

Kate is a control freak. Cara asked Kate for her order and did not stray from it. IMO Kate is not healthy. Her hair and skin, they do not glo. She may be thin, but thin does not = healthy. It can be as dangerous to your health as obesity!

I am not making a diagnosis, but Kate has the personality of someone who also has anorexia! Control. Its all about the control. She says Type A personality, but its about control.

Kate's breakfast does not look appetizing in the least, although I'm sure Cara and Mady did their best to prepare it to their mother's picky taste. My son has a terrible cold, so I am pampering him on this Mother's Day - and am happy to do so. That's what being a mom is all about - taking care of the kiddos, especially when they are under the weather.

So I made breakfast - organic, locally produced apple juice, coffee (for me), buttered toast, scrambled eggs. Then I hit the grocery store and bought a roast, which is now in the crock pot cooking away. I am having a very pleasant day though - spending it watching tv with my son, and soon I will take a little nap.

Sounds like most of the moms here are enjoying their day as well :)

LB said...

No way Kate said that as an answer to the girl's question. She is still dressing them alike so they will all lindex ike! What a hypocrite! That was so a made up conversation. Really? You say that to your child then turn around and make them dress alike?

fidosmommy said...

I think the breakfast was wonderful simply because a child (or children) made it for their mother. It doesn't have to be beautiful, it barely has to be edible. These are children who have had little kitchen experience. But they thought enough about their mother to do this for her. I wish Kate had given them a bit more credit instead of making her comment about the meal itself.

She has wonderful children. One day that thought will creep into her brain as a genuine,
awesome bit of reality. They are not accessories, and the sooner she understands this the better for everyone.

I don't have an issue with the kids making the breakfast either only the content of the breakfast, which isn't their fault since Kate said she specifically asked for what they gave her. For all we know they said are you sure you don't want some turkey bacon, maybe an egg and cheese english muffin, some fruit and yogurt on the side? Even little kids would realize that's not enough food.

A true athlete would not eat like that, nor would someone with any understanding of even the basic principles of nutrition and an organic lifestyle.

Parental alienation does work for some kids. It doesn't for others. Or sometimes a kid will go along with it for months or years then wake up and have an epiphany and realize what is going on. The younger they are the easier it is to brainwash them. Trying to keep this going through the teen years when kids question everything a parent says is very difficult. I put Kates "breakfast" into my calorie calculator. Here are generic results. Her breakfast may contain more or less calories and fat depending on actual brands.

2 egg whites 34 calories 8 grams protein 0 grams fat

1 slice of generic wheat toast 67 calories with 3 grams protein 1 gram fat

Butter spray 0 calories, 0 grams fat, 0 grams protein.

So her breakfast has around 97 calories, 1 gram of fat. and 11 grams protein. She will get some added calories from the creamer, but, I doubt its more then 20.

I wonder wonder what her net caloric intake is per day. Based on this breakfast, I would say under 1000. I doubt she is getting enough fat either. My fat target is 50 grams/day with no more then 12 grams of saturated fat.

No wonder she is tired all of the time. She is not eating enough calories or fat.

I'm not surprised someone like Milo would try to "reason" with a teen going through his first real breakup. Way to discount and diminish his feelings. He's not going to respond to "oh honey it's really not that big of a deal! Snap out of it, let me reason you out of this!" Less time twittering and more time studying up on the teenage brain. The breakup is real and huge and devastating to him, it's irritating when someone tries to tell you otherwise. What's next, You don't really know what love is? UGH, adults are awful sometimes.

By the way color me surprised Milo even has kids....I guess I had heard she might at some point but never did I really believe it.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day. My younger daughter and grandson took me out to breakfast and I had eggs benedict florentine and a massive amount of homefries. My husband took a trip to CT for the weekend as his mom had a stroke a week ago. She's home from the hospital and doing well. It was nice he got to spend Mother's day with her. Older daughter couldn't get home but we chatted on the phone (it's also her 31st birthday today). And I yakked on the phone for an hour with my mom. Take that Kate.

As far as her breakfast goes. How can anyone survive on that? No wonder she's tired all the time and her hair looks like shit. My husband watched an episode of the Dr. Oz show recently and Dr. Oz said the amount of calories you should intake daily is by multiplying your weight times 12. I did that and it says I should have 1524 calories daily. My husband thought that was alot and I thought it wasn't enough. What do I know.

Hey Kate, some girls like Legos too and they make kits that appeal to girls now. Nothing like stereotyping!

Why does she do this? Do the boys all have to like the SAME toys, and the girls have to like the SAME toys? Why doesn't she treat them as individuals with independent likes and dislikes? Just give each kid the same number of gifts and everyone will be happy. As always, they are treated as a PACK.

You know, it's tweets like this that really tick me off. These kids are not isolated. They do not live in a vacuum. They are in school five days a week. They have friends/peers/classmates. They have playdates. They are involved in activities and sports in school. They go to birthday parties and they have had birthday parties. I do think, though, that their being in another county and an hour away from most of their friends really does cut down on many social events they could attend because they are just too far away.

I thought, though, that she has always said that it's traditional to open the pool on their birthday. No word about the pool being ready even though it's only 48 degrees today?

Well, I guess it would be in the eye of the beholder, but I don't really think any of the children ever have resembled Kate. I guess Jon's Korean-American genes were the dominant ones in many respects. What I mean is that if I didn't know Kate, nor the children, and I was asked in some sort of test to match pictures of children with their parent - I would not put Kate with any of those children.

However, there may be other people with more discerning eyes who might say that one or more of the children have the same chin as Kate, or the same jawline or some such.

--------------------

I didn't say that they have an "active social life" because I don't believe that they do for the reason that I gave -- they don't live close to their classmates where they can hang out, go to their houses after school like many of us did growing up. What I said was that they are not totally isolated from the world, as many would believe. They are in school five days a week and they have activities, friends and after-school events there.

Kate didn't give a reason for not throwing a big bash this year like she did in other years. She doesn't owe anyone an explanation, although I am curious that if the pool party is the tradition, why it wasn't held. Maybe there was a party with friends on Saturday, although I can't imagine that she wouldn't have sent pictures galore and proclaimed what a wonderful mother she is, so exhausted, etc., from organizing it.

Kate has tweeted about chauffering the kids around to playdates, and their having sleepovers. The thing is, if she does this she's criticized for putting too much out there about the kids and they need their privacy (I agree), but if she doesn't mention anything about the kids's social life or activities at school, then it's assumed that they are isolated and have no friends.

I'm glad the kids had a nice celebration with their mom and that they received presents that they enjoyed. After several years of Kate's birthday dramatics, it was a nice change.

It sounds like they brought treats to school to share with their friends there. And we don't know what they did or didn't do with their Dad for their birthday. All in all, though, it sounds like it was a nice, low-key birthday and that's perfectly fine. I think, frankly, it's a good thing. We often talk here about how their perception of reality has been skewed over the years by TLC and Kate and how they need more normal experiences.. It sounds like they had a pretty regular, mediocre birthday, one I've done with my kids as well. Some years you just take a break from the parties etc. Sometimes, it's just you and your parent(s).

Not going to be righteously indignant over this one. The only thing that would have made it better was for Kate to have simply tweeted (if she really had to Tweet at all) "Kids had a great birthday. Treats at school with friends and then cake and presents at home. All in all a good day."

Even many celebs there had never been before, it's a real once in a lifetime thing and not mediocre. I didn't see a single person taking issue with mediocre parties in and of themselves. Several people said that's typically what their celebrations look like. Same here.

She doesn't get to live the high life while her kids get the short end of the stick and she doesn't get to be an authority on the home and make money off it, and the kids, when she has no more idea than anyone else.

I get being upset by her hypocrisy - the "I can't afford to put my kids in summer camp but I can jet off to the Kentucky Derby for the weekend", etc.

My criticism for the way she handled this birthday was that she put up the pics which ties into her "My whole life has to be an episode for public consumption" mindset. I would like to see Kate try and just market herself and not bring her kids into it all the time. I know that won't happen because her "fame" is tied directly to the kids, but one can always dream.

I reminds me of what Paul Peterson said about children NEEDING secrets. The kids' classmates know what they did, what they got, what they ate. Take takes that all away from them.
I remember going back to school after summer vacation and seeing how much my schoolmates had grown and finding out what they did all summer. The tups have never known that because everything is made public by their mother.
The whole Mommy blogging thing is a bit of an invasion of privacy. I get moms wanting to share their kids and experiences, but join a Mommy club, don't put it out there on the internet where it's there forever.
Of course it goes without saying that Kate is one of the worst offenders I've ever seen, selling her kids' childhoods, privacy and basic human decency. No one should see them pee, poop, dress, undress, cry, scream, vomit...

Admin - sometimes we are all righteously indignant here and with good reason. :-) For myself, I chose not to be this time because I didn't see an issue with how she celebrated the birthdays except for the broadcasting it to the world as a Twitter episode. It seemed some people were getting mad because she didn't have any friends over this year. I don't see a problem with that unless it happens EVERY year.

I apologize if anyone thought I was calling them self righteous. That was not my intent.

As a belated Mother's Day to everyone, a good friend sent me this video. It has Christian references because the creator of it is Christian, so if that offends anyone, again my apologies. But the video is beautiful IMO and I wanted to share:

Wasn't it last year that Mady and Cara did the parties for the kids? Mady had a tea party for about 6 guests in the upstairs apartment over the garage and Cara had a Lego party for the 3 boys and only one guest was there in the lower area of the garage. They did the menu, decorating, everything for both events. That is really sweet and nice of them, but it seems they are raising the younger siblings in this area.

I think these excursions she takes to places like the derby and Vegas are just her way of flippin' the bird at everyone who opposes her hypocrisy, her way of saying she can do what she wants and there isn't a damn thing anyone can do about it, ergo she makes sure a photo or two gets tweeted. She still thinks she's far above and beyond the lowly mediocre she lives among.

I always think of that song from Sweet Charity when she goes off with her gigolo I mean her manager.

Tonight at eight you shoulda seen
A chauffeur pull up in a rented limousine!
My neighbors burned! They like to die!
When I tell them who is gettin' in and goin' out is I!
If they could see me now,
That little gang of mine,
I'm eating fancy chow
And drinking fancy wine.

I have not read through all comments yet but I had some opinions.

First, these calico critters are much too juvenile for 9 year olds. I saw the pics of the toys and thought they were better suited to a 5 year old. Now, we must remember, they are a year and a half older than some of their classmates. She started school late. They should be in 3rd, not 2nd grade. So their peers may pay with them, but they are younger. When I was a child my fathers company had a Christmas party every year. The children got a wrapped gift, broken down by age groups. My father always put my brother and I into one age group older so the toys wouldn't be too young. Very smart!
She refuses to stop infantilizing. 12 year olds would not be paying with these too. That pic of Kate paying with the kids was staged! 100%. She stages all her twitter pics. They are not real.

Secondly, regarding Kate's breakfast, or lack there of. Is anyone really surprised? I'm not. She has been eating this way for years. Even when they did the show, she never ate what they did. And Mady, has Kate's eating habits. Many times during the show she was whining about only wanting to eat a salad. Damage was done long ago. Mady in a bathing suit one summer, scared me. Her bathing suit was gaping around her legs. She has me worried.

Sadly, much of this damage has already happened. It doesn't mean its too late to fix it. As a pediatric nurse practitioner, from what I can see of these eating habits, she seems to have a problem already. I hope Jon has his eyes open. Kate doesn't.

Nope the last time they paid for per say was when they turned 7

No, Chef. She had a party for them last year and the show had been cancelled, so TLC didn't foot the bill. She did.

So close to the Gosselin kids? Baloney. Milo pulls the wool over the sheeple's eyes, leading them to believe that she has seen these children and has a close relationship with the family. She doesn't bother to correct them and admit that she's never met any of them.

When they were 7 they had the pool party and then the was the last season of K+8.

They made nine this year so yes KK paid for their 8th birthday.

We haven't seen what Mady eats or doesn't eat now. Perhaps her appetite has picked up and she's watching what her peers are eating and does the same. It's not know if she has a problem. At that age, self-image is very important, and I hope that she hasn't been taught that "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."

" I saw the pics of the toys and thought they were better suited to a 5 year old. Now, we must remember, they are a year and a half older than some of their classmates. She started school late. They should be in 3rd, not 2nd grade. So their peers may pay with them, but they are younger."

But you just said that the toys are better suited for a five year old. Their friends in second grade are eight years old, which would still be too old to play with those toys. They are not five years old in second grade.

Pennsylvania has really had its share of sad stories lately. That terrible car accident, news this morning of that fire that was so heartbreaking, Penn State scandal, now Gosnell too. And they're home to Kate Gosselin.

Apparently in addition to not overseeing child abuse and child labor, they also didn't monitor abortion clinics: "Pennsylvania authorities had failed to conduct routine inspections of all of its abortion clinics for 15 years." I never want to hear another sheeple say oh well if child abuse was happening something would have been done!

I am sending happy thoughts and wishes for better news PA's way.

You are so right, Auntie! I did a run with that play in Equity Theater...I wasn't anywhere as good as Gwen Verdon by a long shot, but this is so Kate. Continuing that song...

"I'd like those stumble bums to see for a fact
The kind of top drawer, first rate chums I attract.
All I can say is "Wow-ee!
Looka where I am.
Tonight I landed, pow!
Right in a pot of jam.
What a set up! Holy cow!
They'd never believe it,
If my friends could see me now!"

---
She also sang this...could it be Kate's future?

"Where am I going?
And what will I find?
What's in this grab-bag that I call my mind?
What am I doing alone on the shelf?
Ain't it a shame,
No one's to blame, but myself...
Which way is clear?
When you've lost your way year after year?

No matter where I run I meet myself there,
Looking inside me, what do I see?
Anger and hope and doubt
What am I all about?
And where am I going?
You tell me!"

Thank you! You are right! Last year was rough as a Penn State alum I also saw our church's monsignor indicted for covering up sex abuse in the Philadelphia Archdiocese sex abuse scandal. He was convicted. Gosnell is terrible too...and can't forget the people in Philly who held disabled people hostage for their disability checks.

But if someone is envious of her "relationship" with Kate, she doesn't tweet that person to tell them that she never met her personally. She just lets them believe that she and Kate are best friends forever. She won't respond to the person and tell the other sheeple that she doesn't know Kate.

Sometimes if someone asks her point-blank if she ever met Kate, she will say "no," but she has no problem leading them on to believe that she and Kate have a special relationship because she "knows" her.

What? How do you say THANK YOU when you are in another car? Stick your head out and shout across the freeway? That's nuts and dangerous. If someone does that I try to wave or make eye contact but on freeways out here if that can't be done safely, sorry, forget it.

Also, it can be extremely dangerous to let cars in, Milo. My high school librarian's son got in a catastrophic car accident because he "waved someone in" trying to be nice. He's fine, thankfully, but she used to tell all of us getting our permits not to be nice out there. You need not cut someone off, but unexpected breaking and the high chance of a miscommunication as you "wave people in" (is he waving me in, the guy in front of me or behind me, is he maybe just stretching his arm and not waving in at all???) are incredibly dangerous when you try to be a hero.

Mine didnt like Legos. He got some in a Happy Meal and after building one thing they spent their life on the floor whe I was always stepping on them with bare feet. He would pile them on top of each other and shoot them with darts. After warning him about them too many times I finally carried out my threat and super-glued them together. He didn't care and said "at least I don't have to pick them up any more"!

I tell DH this all the time. He's just too nice and while thoughtful, I tell him that he's going to cause an accident one day because of doing unexpected things when others aren't aware enough.

She didn't say she was on a freeway. She said heavy traffic. Perhaps someone was waiting to pull out from a stop sign or parking lot, and since she was waiting in traffic anyway, she let them go ahead.

In that case, the other person usually signals you by waving a "thank you" in the rear view mirror. At least that's what I do.

I try to wave too but like I said, it's more important that you are being careful and watching the road. I wouldn't take offense if someone didn't wave at me. I want them to watch the road not wave at me. It's a little over the top not only to be so upset about it but to take to twitter about it.

Please, don't wave people in. It may seem polite, but it's very dangerous. Just because things look clear from your perspective doesn't mean things are clear from their perspective.

How would they know that Kate calls them "littles?" I wouldn't think that they read her tweets or check her blogs. They couldn't care less about the Kate saga, who is suing whom, or buying Kate's cookbook. At ages eight and nine, there are other things on their mind -- like homework and Legos, baseball, Scouts, video games, and gymnastics!

She does need to stop it though -- it's just one more thing that she does to make them still appear to be cute and cuddly toddlers, which they are not.
