Part 3

I hope I raise a child who will stick up for a kid who’s being bullied on the playground. I also hope I raise a child who, if he’s the one being bullied, fights back. Hard. Oh, and if he’s the bully? I hope he realizes that his mother, who once wore brown plastic glasses and read the phonebook on the school bus, will cause him more pain than a bully ever could.
I hope I raise a child who relishes life’s tiny pleasures—whether it’s a piece of music, or the color of a gorgeous flower, or Chinese takeout on a rainy Sunday night.
I hope I raise a child who is open-minded and curious about the world without being reckless.
I hope I raise a child who doesn’t need to affirm his self-worth through bigotry, snobbery, materialism, or violence.
I hope I raise a child who likes to read.
I hope I raise a child who is courageous when sick and grateful when healthy.
I hope I raise a child who begins and ends all relationships straightforwardly and honorably.
I hope I raise a child who can spot superficiality and artifice from a mile away and spends his time with people and things that feel authentic to him.

xmas mornings in my family's house was all about the chaos of children's excitement. Someone would volunteer to hand out the gifts, and the mad frenzy of bows and wrapping paper being strewn about began while the adults sat around and watched. We are all always in pajamas. So much fun :D I couldnt imagine having a controlling parent and a rigid, structured xmas. Just not how I was brought up, and certainly not how I continue the family tradition.

Part 4

I hope I raise a child who makes quality friends and keeps them.
I hope I raise a child who realizes that his parents are flawed but loves them anyway.
And I hope that if my child turns out to be a colossal screw-up, I take it in stride. I hope I remember that he’s his own person, and there’s only so much I can do. He is not an appendage to be dangled from my breasts on the cover of a magazine, his success is not my ego’s accessory, and I am not Super Mom.
I hope for all of these things, but I know this: None of these wishes has a thing to do with how I feed him or sleep-train him or god-knows-what-else him. Which is how I know that these fabricated “wars” are phony every step of the way. I do not need the expensive stroller. I do not need to go into mourning if my "sleep-training method" is actually a "prayer ritual" that involves tiptoeing around the house in the dark.

This is not a test. It’s a game called Extreme Parenting, and you can’t lose if you don’t play. And, really, why would you play? You have children to raise.

That was beautiful. I would like to add that in the Mom wars, the number of children is often used as a gauge- I cant stand that. I have 1 child- I LOVE my singleton- Life is AWESOME with a singleton, but some mothers would believe they are better mothers because they have more children (cough, count 'em, 8!) No, No and No. It's the quality of the parent that counts. I was raised in big family, the oldest of 5, and the age gaps are significant, so I grew surrounded by babies. I decided that was not the life for me. Doesnt make me less of a mother. I hate the mommy wars. I like community, not competition. I like what this board has become. BTW, I do own skinny jeans :) am I hip?

I loved that, each part! I agree with every wish and also hope the same for my own kids. I can see some of them have come true as they are now young adults. There are some things I would like to change but my child is not 'me.' No child is perfect and no parent is either. Thanks so much for sharing!

hyperemesis gravidarum - is serious. Please, you can't compare Kate Middelton Windsor with Kate Gosselin. It is an insult. I suffered with it, Nothing would stay down. It wasn't morning, it was morning, noon and night. I lost 13 lbs in one month. Prompting the obstretician to warn me that one more pound and it was the hospital. Finally, two things would coca cola and half a hoagie. It was a nightmare for 6 months when every thing became normal. I feel for Duchess Kate M

Thank you guys! I'm giddy at the moment. Food! The kind one can chew! With flavor!

Pink - Problem is intestinal - thankfully, heart is strong like bull :) Unfortunately, along with a wheat issue, I have an long history with adhesions :( But this time I was lucky. Yay!

Back to Santa stuff - and sorry if I'm repeating something that's been discussed - but what's the deal with this "Elf on a Shelf"? One showed up at our house over Thanksgiving and I assume will return this Friday - seems to be following littlest GS all around. Must be exhausting. All I know is I about got my hand chopped off when I reached out to check it out (it was sitting atop a picture in the dining room at the time). Apparently, there are RULES...

Ah for the days of Mr. Jingaling. On Halle's 7th Floor. Who, now, come to think of it, sounds rather creepy. Why did he need so many keys anyway? Doesn't matter. Isn't Halle's now a casino. Or is that Higbee's?

I couldn't imagine that, either. We'd wake up our parents when it was still dark. My dad would pretend to be really annoyed, but I think that he was up the entire night, so excited that he couldn't sleep. He was one of the most Christmasy persons I knew. He lived for it. Our house was decorated inside and outside, and we'd win the annual community Christmas decorating contest, kind of like Clark W. Griswold in National Lampoon, but without Uncle Eddie's camper parked out front!

On Christmas morning, my dad went into the living room first, made sure everything was just right, and his camera was ready. We'd wait on the stairs and when he said, "Okay, now!" we'd rush in there. Gosh, I miss him. Wrapping paper flying, no order to anything, just wonderful chaos while he snapped the photos and my mother sat and smiled (one year she made all of the clothing for my new ballerina doll). Santa always brought one big thing (such as a bike or a doll) and it was never wrapped. The other gifts and stocking stuffers were wrapped. My parents owned a store, and the wrapping paper was what they used to wrap customers' gifts. I found a huge commercial roll of that paper when I was cleaning the attic. It's sacred...so many memories of the best Christmases any child could have. It wasn't the presents that made them so magical, but the family traditions, when everyone was together, before anything happened to any one of us.

The girl that played Cassandra with her brother James on Little House on the Prairie, who is now grown, married and a mother of 2 kids, wrote a book about a dominating stage mother.

She said that her mother threw her down a flight of stairs. The little girl now is Melissa, on Fox News. Her mother even came to the studio and saw her 5 minutes before they were going on live. Her mother was very distraught and she finally left. Melissa had to shake it off and go on the air in 2 minutes.

Her mother sounds like someone we know. Melissa said that her mother chose to be out of her life. And she is sad over it, but it can't be helped.

Here is a link to a 3 minute video of Melissa being interviewed by Joy Behar.

Okay, I will fess up to the ultimate kitchen gadget - a Ninja blender, though it is just referred to as the Ninja. My son got it for me. I believe it would surely pulverize a razor knife. Do I use it a lot? Not really. It has a happy home in the first cabinet to the left of the sink. We pre-plan usage of it when we go to the grocer's as in shall we break out the Ninja? I buy a bag of strawberries, bananas, oranges, and a tub of yogurt. We practically live off smoothies until they are gone then the dangerous device is cleaned with a toothbrush so as not to come in contact with the razor sharp blades and goes back into its happy home. Am I glad to have it? Yes, it was a great gift.

Our smoothies go like this: A double handful of frozen strawberries, a banana, the juice of an orange and nice dollop of yogurt. In the Ninja it is blended instantly. Very tasty. We tried many ways of making them and this recipe became the staple.

I also have 3.5 oval crock pot that is removable from the base. I use it every Sunday, and it has a place worthy of its stature on the kitchen counter.

But my most prized possession is what surely must be a 5-pound cast iron skillet that has been tempered to perfection. It has its own special hook so I can gaze at it lovingly as I pass it by, and is very decorative, I might add.

Auntie Ann -- Sorry. The biggest problem with posting on a blog is that you can't always tell when someone is making a snarky joke and someone is being snarky serious. You were joking and I thought you were being serious. Sorry, sorry!

I was at a cat show when Diana died (Muncy, Indiana). The showhall conversation, from exhibitors and visitors alike, was almost exclusively about Diana, until someone mentioned offhandedly that Mother Theresa had also died that morning.

Kiwi -- I'm so happy to hear you are better! It's a shame you missed out on the Thanksgiving feast, but hopefully you'll be able to enjoy all the Christmas goodies.

Millicent -- Very well said. A person shouldn't be held 100% accountable for every hurtful action and wrong decision they make from the time they emerge from the womb, in perpetuity, UNLESS they continue with the same actions and decisions. People need to be allowed to apologize, make amends, and move on when they screw up. It's counterproductive to keep throwing the same mistakes in their face time after time. KK, OTOH, continues to engage in the same destructive behaviors and never seems to learn or to care when she causes hurt and injury to others as a result of her actions. Until then, she's fair game, IMO. KATE is the one who continually posts stories and pictures of her kids and goes on national television and talks about wanting to put them back on TV in another reality show. Jon rarely speaks publicly of the kids, and then only in general terms (as in, had dinner with __ and __) or took kids to the park, or whatever. Most of what we know about Jon's current interactions with the kids comes from 3rd parties -- locals who have seen them out and about, or the couple of instances where Liz tweeted a pic or made a comment.

With our first baby, I had it every time I walked past a bag full of garbage. I avoided walking the dog on trash day because I knew I'd be sick when I saw the trash cans set out on the street. I am so weird. Then the spaghetti craving began. I ate so much of it that to this day, I don't want to see spaghetti. With subsequent children, nothing at all. With each of them I worried that something was wrong (or that I really wasn't pregnant) because I never had morning sickness.

Guys, you're boring me with these memories and these poignant stories, come on, it's a waste and you are all BRAGGERS who are patting themselves on the back. Why can't you talk about how your kids worship the ground you walk on, squeal in delight over your every movement, thank you for everything any anything, pretty much even for existing, and would rather be with you than with your deadbeat ex-husband? That's what the classy women are discussing these days.

SNARK X 1000, in case that isn't crystal clear by now. Just trying to get into the mind of a sheeple. As expected, it's a pretty scary experience.

Seriously, love all of the beautiful stories and memories you are sharing! I am only 23, not a wife or mother yet, but you are the type of women I hope to emulate. Kate? Not so much.

readerlady said...

Rhymes, who is the author of that essay? That was beautiful.

A good friend of mine had HEG with her first pregnancy. At one point, she was vomiting 5 and 6 times an hour, all day, for weeks. All she could do was sit with her head in a bucket. She was hospitalized 3 times and nearly lost the baby. Second pregnancy, not a minute of morning sickness.

A travel crockpot? I'll have to check that out. I don't have a real crockpot. I have a Rival slow cooker. The "crock" is a 2 1/2 qt. enamel bowl that sits on a heat plate that can be used as a griddle. I love it. It's the perfect size for me, just right for a pot of soup or a small pot roast or chicken and noodles. It's getting old, though, and I live in fear that it will die and then what do I do?

Aggiesmom -- I have looked for my particular slow cooker on Ebay and not found it, but I keep looking. I also check out yard sales and thrift shops. Westbend makes a similar one, but it's bigger and doesn't have the griddle heat plate. Dear readerlady, you needn't apologize although it is very nice of you to do so and thank you. You are always very polite and my comment was directed at another poster. I was slightly irked at being lectured for someone's misinterpretation of my dig at Kate Gosselin, who demanded to be treated like a queen before, during and after her pregnancy with the sextuplets.

I know hyperemesis gravidarum can be serious. However, the medical team assigned to care for the duchess is probably treating her royally. (oh, dear, there I go again). She will be getting the best care. There was no malice intended towards her or her pregancy.

~~ a few years ago, I bought a cheap cupcake tin from the dollar store and HunnyBunny snipped them apart into safe little singles for me. I use these upside down sometimes to help keep meats in the crock from swimming in their juices.

Re- morning sickness. There is one food that must be avoided at all costs when having morning sickness. I thought I was surely going to die when I was home alone and nearly choked to death on pancakes. I am sure they are off the charts for anorexics as well as rice. BTW, I never had morning sickness, I had evening sickness. Mostly with the first one. 6pm every night like clockwork till I could finally fall asleep, for about 4 months.

LoveMyGrandsons said...

To all you crockpot ladies out there. I love my big oval crockpot and use it all the time. However, you have been talking about a small crock to make a lunch on your desk? I have a small 1 quart crock, but I've only used it for dips at parties. Is this the kind you are referring to for making a lunch at work? Or is mine too small and really just for dips?

localyocul said...

I feel for poor Kate (not K8). I have a friend who had the HG and it was so bad she never had another child. I had "morning" sickness all 9 months but considered myself lucky because it would come on suddenly, I would throw up, and feel better. Smells bothered me tremendously. I had friends who only had it for 3 months but were nauseous 24/7 while I felt better as soon as I puked.

I got 2 crock pots for Christmas one year. I made a beef stew in one and chicken soup in the other one fine day. I hate beef stew, so I never made that again. The chicken soup was more trouble than I wanted to deal with so I never made that again, either. I gave the crocks to my mother who loved them for making chili sauce and tomato butter. When she died, I got them back and put them in my free yard sale. They were gone in a flash - one lady got both of them. I've since been given about 4 more crock pots - 3 quart, 5 quart, 6 quart, and one that has 3 differnt sizes of crock to sit on the base. I have given those all away.

What I do use are the "Lil Dippers" which are for gravy, cheese sauces, hot dips, etc. I have 3 of those and use them at church dinners a lot.

I also have a 3 sectioned buffet that I used once and put back in its box and in my storage room. I'll keep it because it's useful at Christmas open houses.

Froot Loops? Did somebody mention Froot Loops?
I love those things and eat them straight out of the box. A treat! I allow myself a box about once a year.

Dwindle - I have evening sickness!
My poor hubby. It used to strike a dinner time and the food I was cooking would smell all wrong to me. I'd ask him things like "does this smell like feet to you" or "this smells like it's rotten" and he couldn't eat either. I think he lost weight through both of my pregnancies. He's made up for it now though haha.

I don't know why everyone is concerned about crock pots and kitchen gadgets. Isn't the world ending on December 21? You can't take them with you, except for Dwindle, of course, who will find some way to do it! :) Should we have an "end of the world" thread as the last posting here? If we had one thing we could take with us, what would it be?

My philosophy is that if you can't do it in a crockpot, you don't do it! I make stews, roasts, pork with apricot glaze, chili, soups, chicken dishes, hamburger helper (if I'm desperate), spaghetti, hot buttered rum, cranberry cider, chicken jambalaya, Swedish meatballs, ribs, sweet and sour chicken, enchilada casserole, stuffed cabbage...and on and on.

I think the only thing that didn't turn out as planned was lasagna, but I blame me, not the crockpot.

LMG -- The little crock we're talking about is really cute, but doesn't look like a traditional crock pot. It sounds very useful though, and can be used for food transport and storage. Go to Amazon and search for Crock-Pot SCCPLC200-R. It comes in 4 different colors. The pink is $16 but temporarily out of stock. The other colors are in stock and are $19.99.

Auntie Ann -- Maybe we should all hashtag our snark. We could avoid misunderstandings that way. Anyway, I'm glad I didn't offend you. I try to be respectful of everyone here, but sometimes it doesn't come out that way.

The royals don't talk about being skinny do they? I think Kate Middleton has always been a very healthy weight. She's certainly thin but not in an unhealthy way. Diana had an EATING DISORDER and was very open about that and got help. I don't understand the royal hate. I think the princes are reflective of just what a good job their family did raising them against incredible odds--their mother dying, public divorce, life in the public eye from birth. It's really quite remarkable how well they turned out. Nope, they're not perfect--no one is.

I admit it- I love being skinny- but I love my curves even more!! I was very skinny for sooo many years, and then, when I finally put on some weight and filled out, and got, you know, like boobs (teehee) at the ripe at of 30 (better late than never) and got some flesh on my hips so they weren't bones anymore, holy cow did I start getting alot more attention from guys, and my shirts finally fit right (amazing what a chest can do for your blouse). I looked so much better curvy than anorexic thin (I was not anorexic- I was just thin). I try to endorse that message as much as possible; Healthy weight is sexy, girls, trust me, I know. People look so much more vibrant with weight on their bones.

All snark aside, one year during a horrible heat wave and no airconditioning, I put a chocolate cake out on the grill. It baked fine! It did have a bit of 'we grilled hamburgers last night' flavor, but with the frosting globbed on it, the kids ate it all just fine. I have baked meatloaves on the grill and stuff like that.

We were living in Scotland and the ob threatend to put me in the hospital. We tried anti-nausea medication first and that fortunately worked. They say it is more prevelent when pregnant with a girl and I was. Fortunately it didn't affect me with my second daughter. My poor husband was beside himself. He was working in an industry where his schedule was two weeks home/two weeks away so I ended up staying with a friend while he was gone. Not a fun condition to have. I feel for the Duchess.

Watched Charlie Brown Christmas last week and Rudolph tonight. Frosty this weekend. Waiting for A Christmas Story and It's a Wonderful Life. Christmas season for me doesn't start until I see these shows on TV.

I want to know how re-entry into your home is hard when you've been away. Especially when you are only away for a couple of days. Kate really needs to think before she tweets. She should be excited to be home to see her kids and her beloved Shoka. I have to remember it's Kate and she never likes to go home. I have a Charles and Diana story to share. In August of 1981 when my husband and I were living in Scotland we went with some friends to the Braemar Highland Games which takes place every year. The royal family always goes to the games as well as they spend part of their summer at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. We were sitting on the grass having lunch when we noticed a procession of vehicles coming down the road right next to where we were sitting. As the vehicles got closer were realized they were Rolls Royces with the royal family. So we stood up and here comes Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip in the first Rolls and Charles and Diana in the second. I don't know who was in the other vehicles as we were all looking at Diana. It was just a few weeks after they had gotten married. We couldn't believe how close we were to the them. It was a thrill to see them up close and personal even if it was only for a second or two.

New post.

Tamara said...

Every gymnast featured in Pretty Boxes desperately wanted to be thin, though it was mainly because of their abusive coaches. I suppose it both does and doesn't fit with the Khates whom wish to be skinny to get the guy or look fit and sexy, but it does fit into the psychological side of eating disorders. Gymnast didn't want to be skinny for their self esteem. They wanted to because their coaches brainwashed them.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

One last comment about the skinny thing....I have to totally disagree that a bunch of celebs come right out and openly talk about being skinny. If anything, I think they play coy about it. Who me, skinny? And then there's Kate, nothing tastes as good as thin feels. The supermodel who said that very same thing was TORN APART in the media, no one could believe it. And Kate gets away with the SAME THING.

Sure they may talk about wanting to be skinny behind closed doors, and they may, on the inside, want to be emaciated. But they would never dare suggest it publicly. We're just too aware now of eating disorders and I think most people feel a responsibility not to encourage destructive behavior even if you've chosen if for yourself. And then there's Kate.

I think that was the point being made, that even if you believe in being 90 pounds, what are you thinking saying so?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Tamara I think you are missing the point. The point is not whether celebs/gymnasts want to be thin. Admittedly, many probably do. The point is whether they would be fool enough to say so publicly. That's the point. And no, they're not fool enough to say so publicly, that I've ever seen. But feel free to point me to some quotes suggesting otherwise.

Go ahead, aggie, dear. Tell them. There is healing in the confession of it all!

Tsk,tsk,...Dwindle dear, going for the jugular, are you??LOL
You fine posters here, don't listen to silly ol' Dwindle trying to defame my character, and more importantly my beloved mixers, THE workhorses of the kitchen. I will admit that they can't cook a pork roast or her stinky sauerkraut, but they can whip up mashed potatoes, candies, make pasta, grind meat, mill flour, ....let's watch her ol' six, count'em, six crock pots do THAT! (hehe, 1000% snark happening here!)
For the record, only two of my mixers have names, NOT all of them....I have a lovely vintage yellow mixer named Mildred and another vintage green mixer named Kermit, cuz' it ain't easy being green!

One more thing about the crock pot, now that you mentioned mashed potatoes. On Thanksgiving, I made the mashed potatoes ahead of time (traditional way) and then transferred them to the crock pot to stay warm. It certainly helped in the chaos of last minute food preparation, and they stayed good and hot.

"Annoying celebs whom you're not sure why they're famous, eg Kardashians, royals, socialites, gymnasts... "

The "want to be skinny" thing aside....gymansts are usually famous because they have won Olympic medals. I'm not sure it's fair to put them in the category of "not sure why they're famous."
