The long-term impact of Jon and Kate on other families in their shoes

The exploitation of the Gosselin eight is in the back of the minds of Houston parents Lauren and David Perkins as they request privacy for their new sextuplets

Lauren Perkins, in one of the few pregnancy photos the family has released.
(Graphics added)
America's newest parents of sextuplets so far seem to be doing everything right.

The Texas couple, who tried over a year and a half to get pregnant and were told by their doctor that the odds of having sextuplets was only 1%, requested privacy at this time, and said on their web site (which only has a handful of comments in their guest book from well wishers): "The family is not taking interviews at this time" and would only release further photos with permission. The family also mentioned the Gosselins in an FAQ on their web site:

"Will you have a tv show, given the opportunity?
Heck no.  I don't think being on tv was root cause to the demise of the Gosselin family (Jon and Kate 8) or the Masche family (Raising Sextuplets).  I think being on tv exacerbated pre-existing problems."
It's stories like this that make us wonder how many families may have been subtly influenced by America's obsession with "freak shows" and the consequences on their subjects, one of the most famous examples being, of course, the Gosselin eight. Is this the good that will come out of the Gosselin tragedy? Here's wishing Lauren, David, and Babies A through F (the parents have not, and we hope never will, released their names) all the best and that they trust their instincts and keep their family private.

"If you had sextuplets, you would do what Kate did too" thankfully doesn't seem to ring true for this young couple, not yet anyway. God speed.

This is happening in my hometown of pearland. I am so glad these people are not going on a media frenzy, they are members of a good church that will help them without tv cameras shoved in their faces. Good luck to the Perkins family!

As Khate never seemed to give a flyin flip about any of the other women Jon dated I don't think she'll care much about this one. It does lend credence to the asexual Khate argument, and I suppose the sociopath one.

There are how many sets of sextuplets in America? Only two did reality shows, one did well handled tv updates, another was the subject of their mom's two books but only until the age of four, and the rest have been totally private.

I don't know what to make of Kate and Jon's girlfriends. It's the one thing she is a-typical about. She doesn't trash them, period.

I think ONE time she made some snide remark about how she doesn't keep up with all his girlfriends, which was a ridiculous comment because she said it after he had been dating someone for a year and a half. But that's all.

That's really quite impressive or a parental alienator. The first thing you go after when you are a parental alienator is the girlfriend.

It's the one area Kate has been mature and respectful. While I get the sense it has more to do with "I won't LOWER myself to acknowledging his girlfriend" nonetheless, it's good for the kids she isn't publicly trashing his significant other.

I always found it interesting in the Baltimore episode when Mady mentioned Ellen the look on Kate's face. She got quiet, she got a little sad, she didn't seem to have any kind of animosity about Ellen, she was almost sort of pained. You might almost think she was longing to just be able to have a boyfriend she could talk about like that too.

I've always wondered why her sheeple, who follow her blindly everywhere else, won't take a cue from her that she DOESN'T TRASH HIS GIRLFRIEND and neither should they, if they truly do everything the way Kate does.

Tamara said...

I don't think it's Khate being respectful at all, I think it's the sociopath in her coming to the forefront. She never felt any deep, passionate, and ultimately possesive emotions for Jon, therefore she doesn't care if he's with other women. No jealousy or anger, sociopaths cannot love. Same with the lack of sexuality.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

But Kate holds an incredible amount of anger toward Jon in other areas. Just not about the girlfriends.

She truly is an interesting thing to watch.

AuntieAnn said...

I wish the Perkins family well.

And not to take anything away from the preciousness those children, but HOM births are not as newsworthy as they used to be...which is for the better I think.

Tamara said...

The anger she has isn't toward Jon as a person, it's towards the man who stopped her TV show and who she couldn't obsessively control anymore. Add to that her need to always "win", therefore to always compete, and you get Khate's actions and words.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Yes Auntie Anne I think the novelty has definitely worn off which is a good thing. I think the same thing has happened to little people and other "freaks" TLC identified.

In a way by overexposing these stories, TLC shot themselves in the foot. Now America knows all about unique people like this and we've had enough. You can only stare at a family with sextuplets for so long before you're bored.

This is good for those people, but bad for someone trying to make money off them.

fidosmommy said...

A pact? I won't talk about your relationship with Steve, you don't talk about my relationships. At least in public.

Just a thought. Kate would agree to that just to keep Steve's actual purpose off public record.

I don't want to rain on the parade..but, they do have a website, and their statement above says 'not at THIS time'.
Only time will tell.
Seems like there was another Houston family that had 6 babies (was it last yr?)

Hopefully Kate ruined the public's interest in there ever being another show like this again.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Tamara, interesting take on it. Really fascinating. So, maybe Kate is just more ticked off at the circumstances, not at Jon the person. Her narcissism prevents her from really caring about Jon enough to actually work up the energy to hate him. She hates what happened for sure and she lashes out at him constantly, but as for anything that doesn't have to do with what happened she doesn't care.

Interestingly enough, the narcissist I knew didn't have enemies that I knew of. But they didn't have friends either, like a real close friendship, they even admitted this (though, they thought it was for other reasons like oh I just work too hard no time for friends). They had neither and I think it's because of how aloof it makes you.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

Aggie, their web site is specifically for "family and friends" they even said so. Although they acknowledged they know the media will look at it.

It sounds like they want to take their time with this and think carefully. I'm sure they probably will release a few photos to satisfy everyone's curiosity and appease the media, which frankly is a GOOD idea in my opinion. You give the media a few PR photos to shut them up and many celebs have done this. If anything they are not rushing anything which is quite wise.

AuntieAnn said...

She never felt any deep, passionate, and ultimately possesive emotions for Jon, therefore she doesn't care if he's with other women.

======

But nobody really knows that, do they? I would think that in the early years of their marriage, if another woman looked at him, her claws would have been out there. She wanted him (his girlfriend was gone the next day, or so she said), and I think she would have been very possessive. It's really difficult to know how she felt in the two years or so before the divorce...those feelings are really private and what she would have done in a certain situation in which another woman would have been involved really isn't known.

Gift of grab said...

Tamara, I think you're dead right on this. I don't believe that Kate has sufficient emotional depth to have been deeply in love with Jon (or anyone else). I do think her anger knows no bounds, and that the reason she continues to have anger towards Jon is that she was thwarted by him. He will always be the primary reason (at least in her mind) that her TV life is over.

Dmasy said...

We know Kate needs absolute control. I doubt she thought Jon would ever leave. He did. She won't forgive that betrayal -- of her personally and of her long term plans.

I don't think she wishes him success or pleasure.

IF he can rise from the ashes of this disaster with credibility and security... IF a judge starts to give him some fairness...IF the kids are seeing reality as it is, then I think she will explode from frustration.

Katie Kuerig said...

Aggiemom. There was another family in the Houston area several years back who had 8 babies, one died and maybe another, I cant remember for sure. They did not want to be in the limelight and they stayed out. I was reading this morning in our paper about this new family and they seem to want privacy, I hope they remain committed to that. Unlike Kate, who was shopping her kids out before they were born.

Kate's Going Down said...

If you go to their web site and click on the progress reports link and read back, the husband said, and I'm quoting, "heck no" to ever doing a TV show. Go dig in there, anyone interested, and see it for yourself.

She backed him on that specific point in a later entry. I think the fact that they aren't even releasing their names is a good sign.

They're definitely doing the right thing. They seem to have tons of supportive family and friends.

Kate's Going Down said...

Dmasy, she left Jon. Not the other way around.

&&&

I'm not sure that is love so much as that is being possessive. They are two completely different things. People are possessive of their houses and cars but it's not real emotional human to human love. Kate extends possessiveness to Jon and the kids. They are mine, all mine, no one exploits the kids but me, I don't care if Jon has a girlfriend he's mine.

I'm a fan of the theory she has never given me any indication she has ever had a deep, emotional, normal human-to-human bond with anyone. I believe she "loves" her kids and "loved" Jon but in terms of the deep, soul to soul connection normal healthy people make with others, I'm not seeing that and that's part of being a sociopath.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

I didn't realize they actually mentioned the Gosselins in a quote. I'm adding it to the post. Thanks!

Jumping In said...

I agree with Tamara and her insight on Kate's lack of interest in Jon's girlfriends. Kate got what she wanted, a show of her own, the big house, the support payments, and oh, the kids. She netted a big bank account, some residual interest in her even after her show was cancelled and the odd gig here and there. And, let's not forget her Twitter followers! Jon is not on her radar whatsoever in my opinion.

Jon has been 'blocked and ignored' by Kate.

One thing with narcissists is out of sight out of mind. They can literally cut someone off they loved and never think of them ever again like they never existed.

I honestly think the only time Kate thinks about Jon is when he gets in her way. When she has to deal with him in their custody battle, and when she thinks about how he "took" the show away, yeah she gets ticked and throws him under the bus. When these topics don't come up, it's out of sight out of mind.

Slightly OT but I have just got Netflix and I have never watched any of the k+8 episodes, except for the rv series finale ( figured viewership wouldn't count by then) so I watched inside Kate's world and what struck me was how she was treated. Not entirely sure I'm right on this but I view it that if you really and truly love someone it isn't something you just say. Such as, "I love my kids." You can say it but love isn't something that you just say because it may be viewed as socially proper or whatever. Loving your family is something that you shouldn't have to voice over and over again. Kate seems to do this, says repeatedly how much she loves her kids.

Love maybe I see it in the action the person takes, that they don't say it as much as they show it in other ways. Maybe love is better felt if you show it. Even if you say something over and over again I feel it sort of loses its meaning.

I don't think Kate will move to NYC because changes are it's far more expensive there than in PA and maybe even a bit more difficult to constantly pull of her star-ish feelings or whatever. Probably maintaining a house such as she has in NYC could cost her more.

You're right on this. Entirely.

I've always found it strange that Kate constantly says she loves, loves, loves her kids, but doesn't really show it as much as she says. People who truly love their kids do things like talk about them all the time, talk about their personalities and likes and dislikes (for all we have been a part of the kids' lives, how much do we really know about them as individuals? think about it, not much.) talk about various things they've done with them, sports games, dance class, school.

We just don't hear about this stuff with Kate. We hare about how the kids do things for KATE or tell Kate things, and we hear about her cooking them slop, and that's about it.

I'd love (pun intended) to see Khate try and move to NYC. Every flat or townhouse or penthouse she'd be interested in would be so far over her head financially. Not to mention that New Yorkers see real celebs on an hourly basis and don't bat an eyelash. She'd be screeching at every boutique salesperson and maitre'd "don't you know who I am?!?"

Kate could not afford to live in NYC proper. Not the hotel type living. Yeah, she can get a place, a real shit hole, for close to $800 a month or more, if she is lucky. The better the neighborhood, the more the rent. Kates kind would be way over $1500 a month. I stay in what they called a short rental apartment, you rent it like a hotel, do your own cooking(had a kitchen, frig etc. I think we paid $94 a day, and it was in the theater dist. It was not a bed & breakfast or hostel. My friend from England booked it. Way cheaper than a hotel. This was about 6 years ago.

Admin said (25) "One thing with narcissists is out of sight out of mind. They can literally cut someone off they loved and never think of them ever again like they never existed."

Yes... And some, ubernarcissists, -like Kate-, can literally erase you from this reality if you don't "fit" into the picture they have of their own perfect life... while you are still very much present IN their life.

My first boyfriend's mother was like that. She was a rich greek millionnairess who deemed me "unworthy" of her darling golden boy. (He was a darling, by the way... And golden, I guess. And sweet. And sexy. And hot. But I digress. Phew...) I probably wasn't Greek enough (Not at all, in fact! lol), not rich enough (again, in fact, not at all!), not "bourgeois" enough ('Was an art student... ).

So, long story short, since I was not what she had envisionned as a wife for her son, she never acknowledged my existence. Simple as that. Problem solved. Her narcissistic image of herself (and her "prolongation" in her son...) was kept intact. Soon after her son and I separated, she finally invited me, through him, to a ballet soirée... and fake utter surprise when informed that we were no longer together.

Yep. True narcissists are really a fun bunch to study...

So my take on Kate's "respectful silence" re: Jon's girlfriend is that their presences in her ex-husband life don't mesh with the narcissistic image of herself as the more desirable single parent. So she negates their existence. And thus, solves her "problem"...

Whenever I hear or read Khate saying I love my kids!!!!!!!!!, it reminds me of my exes best friend. He was a salesman who travelled down to the states all the time and had a booty call in every city. He would even call my ex at 2 o'clock in the morning and put some random chick on the phone just to show off.

Inevitably at every dinner party, football game etc, he would continually pronounce-"I love my wife", whether she was there or not. It became so ridiculous that whenever his name came up anybody and everybody would say -"But he loves his wife"!

Yes. Even in adult relationships you don't go around usually talking about how much you care about that person. Rather your words and actions demonstrate it. For instance with a significant other you're more apt to talk about how great they are what great thing they di, and just in general have them on the mind rather than to stomp around telling people how much you love them. I love them I love them I swear!

Hm, really?

I will admit that I have seen a few episodes of Quints by surprise on youtube. Its a 180 from Kate plus 8. The mom loves spending time with her kids and tries to get them involved in everything. She even gets them involved in messy projects. I have not seen her go into melt down mode from a mess. The dad also seems to love his children. He did get annoyed when they interrupted his football time. Their relationship seems strong. The parents seem to be giving back to their communities. They even got the kids involved when they visited a fire station. I hope the parents are putting aside money for the kids so they will be able to go to college when they get older. I could be desensitized from J&K+8 in my viewing of this family so please let me know if I am missing something.

There is nothing here that suggests this family are keeping their babies out of the spotlight. Looks they like are just grooming for their big moment in the media spotlight.

Cannot fault the non-custodial parent for doing things when the children are no with them.

Are they supposed to wait by the phone, as Kate claims to have done, for the children to call? Or should they occupy their time and do something?

As for these new parents. Kudos to them for staying out of the limelight. Every child deserves a "mediocre" life which is private and not put out their for the fodder of others.

New grifted treadmill?

tate said...

I googled Kate's grifted treadmill and the "professional review" stated that it is a good treadmill for novice treadmill users and should be used only for walking---NOT running. It is also priced at $750-$1000 at the Sears outlet. So, another freebie for Kate but it won't help pay her bills.

Did she grift the treadmill? It's on sale for $1,800.00. Hope the kids get to use their new toy.

We have been exposed to false sightings of Kate before. One tweet is not proof that she was in New York. However, she can't always be believed either.

Remember when she was spotted in two or three places at the same time? She was actually in Vegas.

Time and tweets will tell ...

Don't stores/companies know by now that grifting to Kate is BAD business/PR?

Kate claims she has a sick child home with her today. I thought she was in NYC? Did she just arrive home and is now trying to play dutiful mommy?

And St. Jon is out partying and pimping again?

Of course it was grifted...didn't you just read how she endorsed it on her twitter? Is that why she ran home....for the delivery?

I don't think Sears gave her the treadmill. I really think she sometimes throws out company names in the hopes that they'll hire her for commercials or be a spokesperson for them. I also think she does it in the hopes that other companies will think that if one company gives her something, they will too so that she'll give them free advertising.

But her mentioning the brand of the treadmill-that I consider grifting.

She is so insensitive...her fan base is young girls and (I suspect) moms who have much less than Kate. She continually brags about her possessions. She is thoughtless in her references to unlimited time to accomplish menial tasks. Her whole attitude is so entitled and superior.

Kate doesn't say in her tweet that she is at home. She says she has a child that is home with a cold then uses and ellipsis to continue another thought (thanking Sears) and then another (she can run home on her super-duper expensive running machine thingy). It looks like she is at home running while a child is home sick (but we all know she doesn't care if her children are home sick or not, she'd just hire a nanny to watch them so she could run outside away from the noise)
Technically she's not lying. Just separate her thoughts and you get the true meaning.

Also, grifting freebies (ie: treadmills and coffee) does NOT pay for tuition and your mortgage. Her freebie vacation with the pittance she's going to make off of the 30-40 people on that cruise WON'T pay for one month of upkeep on that house (mortgage/taxes/lawn and pool care)

I am starting to feel a twinge of pity on this woman.

Naw.....

I have to disagree about the Perkins' website being proof that they will eventually exploit their children. They have family and friends that are pretty far-flung. The website was to keep them up to date. I went back and read the updates from the very beginning, every link on the main page. I see no evidence that they had one eye looking at future media deals at all.

Of course, as someone else said, time will tell. But I'm thinking they won't go down that road. They quoted themselves on the website saying they won't, first of all, and shows about big families are honestly pretty played out now. There have been a lt of them, and judging from the comments on my local NBC story on the Perkins, Kate left a BAD taste in most peoples' mouths.

I think it's possible Kate is home and on custody time now and Jon is in NY.

But I DO think the custody was amended and in a pretty big way. I think he has them much more often than he did.

She is a Cow said...

To me it sounds like the treadmill is her latest grift and now, of course, she will throw it out there that she is still "star" worthy and deserving of freebies. I just
don't understand these companies still providing her with products. She certainly is not a marketing machine, willing to post promos for all of these things. This will probably be the only mention that Sears and Nordic Track will get for their efforts of supplying this selfish, cow with a $2,000.00 treadmill.

Kate is a twit said...

Well, Sears just retweeted Kate's tweet-so I'll now agree they did give it to her.

Since she no longer has a show in which to do product placement, she uses her twitter. Considering that her fans retweet everything she tweets, it's plenty of free advertising for the company.

What her fans don't realize is that they are being used to promote the company and product as well. And what to they get in return-NOTHING.

A Pink Straight Jacket For Kate said...

"....I have a child home w/ a cold 2day.... thank you @sears that I can still run...at home on my new amazing Nordic Track C2150 treadmill!"

Oh God. Kate's so effing odd.

She could have just tweeted that because she has sick child, she had to run on her treadmill indoors...

BUT NO...

She had to tweet the name brand, model #, and store where she grifted it from.

Sears, consider yourself used.
That black hole does not reciprocate.

TLC stinks said...

You can't take Kate at her word. It's her gift to say things, to imply, that a normal person would accept as truth. I agree Berks Neighbor. She could very well have a sick child at home, but she is not home with that child. Why the 21 hour Twitter silence? No explanation to her Twitties?

And that shoutout to Sears. I have read that many celebs work out deals with companies to promote their products, but usually they get paid. Sears must have given her the treadmill.

NJGal51 said...

She's probably tweeting @sears becasue they now have a "Kardashian Kollection". Kate probably wants a line of "Gosselin Gear" for runners. (No Kate, you can't use that name now without paying me first)

OT from previous thread, a book that I read probably 25 years ago and always remembered was The Dollmaker by Harriette Arnow. I just went on Amazon and found out that it's now availalbe for my Kindle so I downloaded to read again. May not be for everyone but I did love that book.

Kate's Going Down said...

That's the part I can't account for: if she really were at home with even one child to care for, she'd be twatting away like a maniac. Past behavior on this is at 100% and you know what they say about past behavior being a good indicator for current behavior.

But like Dmasy said, time and twitter will tell. It always does. She didn't want anyone to know she has jetted off to Vegas, but someone somewhere always blabs and then she has to acknowledge it.

Kate is a twit said...

TLC stinks-I do think it was a deal that she made with Sears to promote them. The shoutout to them was blatant advertising, not like her subtle tweets about how her Keuring broke, or how much she loves Starbucks, etc.

Kate Doesn't Rate said...

I'd say Kate reciprocated. She publicly thanked Sears on her Twitter which is considered advertising. And Sears retweeted.

That said, I've noticed there is not the flood of replies that used to occur whenever Kate made even just one tweet. She would get well over 100 tweets back. She has received about 50 and a portion of those are from haters and a few names I've never seen who aren't being complimentary.

She is a Cow said...

I'd like to think that for every grift that does come through for her, there are thousands that she tried for, that didn't pan out. She is just so undeserving at this point and I would hope that some companies/businesses do their homework before passing off freebies in exchange for promotions.

I did some checking and that treadmill is sold reconditioned at Sears, outlet store online. If it were new at Sears, $2600, reconditioned: $1000-$1800. I by all means are not defending Kate, Sears I don't think grifts, Kate a treadmill, I think she is thanking them so she can grift something in the future. Sears also at this sight has a e-mail alert too, when an item is on sale. The comments reviews about this item either reconditioned or new were not good. Infact one guy returned it twice, cause it only worked for a while and he had a brand new one. Kate may have gotten it for $1600 less, but the reviews were not great. What Kate do break the other one?
I don't believe the sick child or sick her act. I think she just got back from NYC.

So where is she getting money for this? CC does not pay that much or is Kate racking up the credit cards? Thus putting herself in debt?
Credit cards are easy, paying them is hard.

Realitytvkids.com (Administrator) said...

I don't have as much of a problem with either of them going to NYC as I do with the kids being left alone in the middle of the school week when it's someone's custodial time. Whoever has custodial time now should be ashamed. I'm not even going to assume who has custody right now since it appears that's all been shaken up.

Both of them have plenty of time to frolic and network and do what they want when they don't have the kids. There is no excuse to do this on custodial time.

I would not be surprised if Kates next blog at CC, will be about fitness and the great bargin she got at Sears.

If you go to Sears twitter account and read the tweets, there are a lot of people, who thank them for stuff they bought or for the Kardashens. A lot of people thank companies all the time. Though, Kate motives are if the Kardashens, can do advertising for you so can I, we are all from reality TV.
Kate did not grift, she got it on sale or reconditioned.

TLC stinks said...

This is my take why Kate is on Twitter. It's not because she has any interest in her fans. It's to make money and keep her name relevant. Here are some quotes about Twittering for promotion:

1."It's just that for successful Twitter promotion, you have to make sure that your tweets aren't perceived as ads. Your posts need to offer people something, whether it's information or entertainment. And don’t forget that you can reply to other people's tweets, too, answering their questions or commenting on their ideas.

2.Mainstream exposure – For better or worse, Western culture is obsessed with celebrities. For a business looking to gain mainstream exposure, high-profile celebrity users can drive a lot of interest very quickly.

Increased credibility - Even celebrities that the public loves to hate can help generate the appearance of credibility for a brand. For many individuals, if a well-known celebrity has chosen to use a particular service, that service must have something worth checking out.

Compelling content - Content is always a challenge for content-driven businesses. Celebrities by their very nature are likely to produce the type of content that even money can’t always buy: timely, exclusive and controversial."
*******************************************

Kate is obviously buying Twitter followers. You can Google how to do it. The more she has, the more likely an advertiser will want to use her. So her fans need not fear...she is earning money. Actually, she is working at home. She claims to have the gift of gab. Perfect for her. I just hope her sheeple realize that she really HAS NO INTEREST in them. These poor souls who have paid money for the cruise are daydreaming about being her buddy. SHE DOES NOT CARE about them.

From NY magazine:

How Much Can a Celebrity Make for Tweeting?
By Jo Piazza

The weirdest thing about the rumor that Kim Kardashian gets paid $10,000 for a Twitter endorsement is that it’s true. (She recently plugged ShoeDazzle.com*, for instance.) The biggest player in the pay-to-tweet market is Ad.ly, a social-media advertorial clearinghouse pairing brands with celebs to inject highly personalized advertising into their Twitter streams.

The pay rate for endorsing companies like Old Navy, Toyota, Best Buy, and American Airlines is determined by the size of a celeb’s following and how that group responds to his tweets with shares and retweets.

On that sliding scale, Snoop Dogg (6.3 million followers) is in the top tier of payments, on the upside of $8,000 apiece, while Paula Abdul (2.2 million followers) falls somewhere in the middle, in the $5,000-each range, and Whitney Port (800,000 followers) falls in the bottom tier, making around $2,500 per tweet.

But there are outliers. When Ad.ly introduced self-destructing Charlie Sheen to Twitter, he was paid about $50,000 per tweet. It was worth it. Sheen’s tweet for Internships.com generated 95,333 clicks in the first hour and 450,000 clicks in 48 hours, created a worldwide trending topic out of #tigerbloodintern, attracted 82,148 internship applications from 181 countries, and added 1 million additional visits to Internships.com.

Of course Charlie didn’t write those tweets himself. No celebrity does. Instead, they’re composed by hungry young tweet ghostwriters whose job it is to broadcast a celebrity’s voice in 140 characters. Says Ad.ly CEO Arnie Gullov-Singh, “Consumers react positively to organic authentic messaging.”

Kate Could Be Fined:

Independent bloggers who fail to disclose paid reviews or freebies can face up to $11,000 in fines from the Federal Trade Commission, according to revisions to the agency's "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising" published Monday.

This marks the first time that the Guides document has been updated since 1980.

From an FTC-issued release:

"The revised Guides also add new examples to illustrate the long standing principle that 'material connections' (sometimes payments or free products) between advertisers and endorsers--connections that consumers would not expect--must be disclosed. These examples address what constitutes an endorsement when the message is conveyed by bloggers or other 'word-of-mouth' marketers. The revised Guides specify that while decisions will be reached on a case-by-case basis, the post of a blogger who receives cash or in-kind payment to review a product is considered an endorsement. Thus, bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service."

The FTC also has its eye on celebrities. "Celebrities have a duty to disclose their relationships with advertisers when making endorsements outside the context of traditional ads, such as on talk shows or in social media," the release explaining the revisions explained.

That means, theoretically, that if a celebrity gushes about a new car on his or her Twitter account and it turns out that the car was given away for free, the celebrity could be fined by the FTC.

Word of the FTC's crackdown on blogger endorsements first broke in June and set off a wave of chatter in communities of bloggers who are well used to receiving and keeping free products from marketers and PR agencies--most notably the thriving "mommy blogger" sector.

It's going to be hard to police--there are a lot of bloggers out there, not to mention a lot of different kinds of bloggers, and a lot of marketers. And as some media critics have pointed out, undisclosed endorsements of freebies have plagued some sectors of the magazine industry for decades now.

I have not read 'Multiple Ble$$ing$' but for some reason, to me, they made it sound as if she found out BEFORE they got married and may have been trying before getting married. I don't think POCS would present itself to cause her to seek medical advise unless she was having horrible 'female' problems early in her life. I've always thought that part of her 'story' was fishy. From the Huff Post article:

"Twitter generally allows the paid tweets, as long as they're posted manually and not automated by a computer program. The Federal Trade Commission suggests endorsers end their tweets with the (hash) symbol, called a hash tag, and the letters "ad" or "spon," short for "sponsored by," to clarify that they're ads."

TLC stinks said...

I guarantee that Kart feels any money she makes - tweeting, CC, running etc is HER money for "extras" (ie the treadmill).
The other money..ie mostly the KIDS MONEY, is her salary and used to pay for daily expenses - food, car, school, clothes, hair, nails etc.
This explains why spending $2000 on a treadmill is no big deal, when that comes from your extra money stash. That is what it's there for.

Auntie Anne it's been a double standard for years.

For some reason the media decided from day one that Nayda was not to be trusted. She can't do anything right. For some reason, Kate was treated by most (not all, like Reading Eagle) with kid gloves even though she did practically the same thing if not worse.

This may be politically incorrect, but I think a pretty blond small town all-American looking mommy was Kate in the beginning and people like that, it's easy on the eyes and minds. Nayda is an L.A. plastic-surgery looking single mom and people don't like to like that, it's uncomfortable. That's all it is.

What's Next? said...

I agree that she is playing word games again. It's not what she says it's what she is not saying. Sadly, I know people who do this so much so that you need an interpreter. It would go something like this - "I didn't say I was "home" with a sick child. I said one of my children was sick. You didn't listen to what I was saying." You definitely can't assume anything with people like this, in fact, you have to be sure to ask a lot of "carefully worded" questions to make sure everything is perfectly clear. Since Kate won't answer questions or gives cryptic answers you can never be certain until the truth comes out from another source.

I also agree that since Kate is following her MO of not tweeting when she is away from the children that most likely she is the one away and since Jon is not making his activities a secret most likely he is not the one with visitation. I believe it is Kate's time with the children and her sick child is being cared for by her nanny.

Kate would get very little if anything with her paltry number of fans. It's taken her a whole year to amass 88,000 followers. Going by that it would take her around 10 years to achieve the bottom tier of making $2,500 per tweet. LOL Plus her tweeties don't do any retweeting or sharing. So if she's in this for the money she's going to need a whole lot more of those Positive Platitudes to make it work for her.

Admin, your comments are repeating. The same post was listed four times. Not sure what blogger's up to this morning, but thought you should no.

It sounds like the Perkins family is handling things well and I wish them all the best.

To be fair to all of the mom's out there with PCOS, my understanding is that a fertility doctor generally will give the ok to start IUI without the standard "Try for a year and see what happens", because the issue with PCOS is that you aren't ovulating. When you truly have this condition, waiting a year isn't going miraculously make you start ovulating, so there's really no point in delaying the treatments. I suppose ultimately it depends on the fertility doctor. Since my understanding is that Jon's father helped to pay for the treatments, it could be that they were able to start as soon as they wanted, since there were no insurance requirements to meet.

LB, Jon and Kate were married on June 12, 1999 and the twins were born on October 8, 2000. My understanding, and please anyone correct me if I'm wrong, is that sometime in the fall, Kate had a "feeling" that something wasn't right and went in for fertility tests. She was diagnosed with PCOS. I believe I read somewhere, but can't find the article, that she and Jon began fertility treatments in January of 2000. The first cycle didn't take. The second cycle in February did, and the twins were born.

So they may have waited 3-6 months before going in for fertility testing and definitely 7 months before they began the IUI with Clomid.

I just went to TMZ website to check out Octomom's house. Her personal hairstylist went there to give her a brailzian hair treatment, cut, and blow out. And Octomom also paid for another cut that she previously received. The total amount was for $520. Octomom is on welfare. This is outrageous. And there was only one toliet working in the house. There are photos of the check written and the deplorable house conditions. The police were called but they didn't do anything. I think Children Protection Services will be visiting the home shortly.

How can any mother pay $520 for hair services when she is the mother to 14 children and on welfare. I will never feel sorry for Octomom again. Oprah, Suze Orman, Dr. Phil, Dr. Drew, have all tried to help her. I think she is mentally ill and needs some, if not all, of her children taken from her.

Actually, I thought kate already had a treadmill. I know she has spoken about ie before, having to run indoors sometimes.

Perhaps, since she was being paid by Sears to promote that particular treadmill, she just said she had THAT ONE. To get around the FTC rule, I guess she had to word it as a thanks to Sears, but it was an odd tweet with the model number. I believe the tweet was a BIG FAT LIE.

To be fair, the big difference between Kate and Octomom is Kate had 2 kids and then had 6 more for a total of 8. Octomom had 6 kids then had 8 more, for a total of 14 kids. That is a huge difference. And Octomom was single when she had all her kids and Kate was married. Also, Kate was only on assistance for one year. Octomom has had severe money problems from day one.

PCOS is often diagnosed at the onset of puberty, or soon thereafter, and is very commonly, and perhaps even overly diagnosed. If your mom was diagnosed with it, chances are if you have a bit of a problem with puberty, you will be diagnosed with it too. It is not a cut in stone type of diagnosis and somewhat of a judgment call based on certain parameters, including family history, by my understanding, for whatever it is worth.

Silimom said...

Permanent Name 101 - Nadya herself apparently commented that one of the reasons she chose to live where she does is because Orange County has a more lax CPS program than does LA County because Orange has less money to fund CPS than does LA.

Also, it's very, very difficult for CPS to just come in and take children. The system is set up to keep children with their parents. It's not that the social workers don't want to, it's the way the laws are set up and while it disgusts me when a child is the victim of such a system, in the long term the laws need to be on the books.

Do you really want the state to be able to just come in and say to anyone "Oh, you're not a fit parent, we're taking your kids?" Before you say "It would never be like that" that's exactly how it used to be, which is why the laws were reformed and why there is now a bureaucracy in place to try to weed out abuses of the system. Unfortunately the world is not a perfect place and all we did was swing the pendulum from one side to the other. Again, children are the ones that suffer.

If you're interested, read the life story of Georgia Tann. You can thank her and other corrupt people, in part, for the state of CPS laws in our country today:

Good grief, someone is defending Kate like crazy over her treadmill shoutout. There are other ways to lead a healthy life besides running on a treadmill. Besides doesn't she already run outside after the children get home from school anyway? Plus she has all these stairs in the house to run up and down. And they are free! DUH. That shoutout was soooo dumb and made her look desperate for attention.

Even LA county wouldn't take your kids for that. I agree with Sillimom. By the way it was an orange county woman who just won a 4.9 million dollar settlement after social workers lied and removed her kids. Google Deanna Fogerty Hardwick to read more. The attorneys who took her case were awarded an attorney of the year award by California Lawyer magazine. Orange county is really tip toeing around after that.

I think the difference between Nadya and Kate is many-fold.

At the time, Kate was white, blonde, relatively cute, her other kids were also multiples, they weren't poor in the way that makes others uncomfortable, her nasty attitude hadn't become apparent, and she wasn't overtly sexual.

I think the biggest things against Nadya at the time were her other kids weren't multiples, she was poor in a way that made other uncomfortable, she was more clearly mentally unstable, and I think the kicker....far too overtly sexual.

Our society doesn't want to see the "mom" as a sexual being. Not in that way. Nadya came across as a budding porn star.

Kate does, too, now. But she didn't then.

I think if Kate had tried the same stunt looking the way she does now, she wouldn't have had the same success.

In some ways, I always felt bad for Nadya in that the media never cut her the same slack they cut Kate. Kate's a loon, too, but in a more socially acceptable way I guess.

I don't think you could fake it. The physical symptoms would be obvious let alone the diagnostic tests. My friend's daughter has it and the poor girl was overweight, had patches of dark pigmentation, dark hairy areas, bad acne, and diabetic-like symptoms related to it. Most people seek help around puberty.

The fact that Nayda already had 8 kids and no husband, or father for them is the difference that counted the most.

I remember that too. I think it was in early January, when a few sheeple tweeted that they got new treadmills for Christmas (I think Paige was one of them). Suddenly, Khate began tweeting about how her treadmill was old and worn out. We all knew she was grifting for a new one, and she got it.

The joke is on her though, because as far as I know the bank/mortgage co won't accept treadmills as payment. Nor will the school for tuition. It must suck to be Khate.

Kate's not home. Her past twitter behavior indicates her present and future behavior. When she starts the maniacal tweeting again, that means she is home (and so are the kids).
So, is she in NYC? more plastic?botox? looking for a media job?
Whatever it is, she isn't home. I could care less where she is, the thing that bothers me is the lying and hypocrisy.

I wonder, if the devil offered her a this deal, would she take it?
I will give you unimaginable wealth and travel, all your days. You will lack for nothing. The only thing I ask in return is you sign the kids over to Jon solely and completely (and to sweeten the deal, she doesn't have to give Jon any child support).

I was diagnosed with PCOS(then called Stein-Leventhal) in 1964. I don't think it can be faked. Some visual symptoms were upper lip and facial hair.I still have the hair issues. Physical symptoms were cysts on my ovaries and absence of menstration. I was 18 at the time. Birth control pills were prescribed when I was 20. When my husband and I wanted to try for a child, the fertility specialist had me chart my AM temps for ovulation for 2 months after which I had a D&C along with an ovarian wedge. The ovarian biopsy confirmed PCOS.The temp chart confirmed no ovulation.

PCOS Mom said...

I was diagnosed with PCOS prior to getting pregnant with my son. It was NOT something diagnosed when I started puberty.

Essentially PCOS means you have all these tiny cysts on your ovaries that can make getting pregnant difficult. The severity can differ but certain signs are infrequent or lack of ovulation.

For me I was not ovulating at all prior so they started at the lowest level of reproductive therapy Clomid, and clomid at the lowest level 50 whatever units its measured in. My dr. (normal non specialist) told me she would do 3 cycles and 3 cycles only of clomid before referring me a reproductive specialist.

I was lucky and ovulated and got pregnant on the first round of treatment.

Fast forward to now and our desire to try to have a second child. This time some months I ovulate some I dont. My OB did not feel comfortable prescribing Clomid (which tries to force ovulation) in this situation so she referred me to a specialist. Now we are about to start our first round of Clomid again. The specialist specifically said they do it all VERY carefully, the check my number of eggs, etc and if there are more than two that look like they could be viable they do NOT go through the process and you have to wait and try again.

Its ONLY after 3 failed rounds of Clomid (which has some multiples risk but normally no more than twins) that you go to the more invasive procedures.

I say all this to say kate's story has ALWAYS sounded fishy to me. I have never heard of anyone going directly to IUI and continuing treatment when it looks like there is a high risk of HOM. All it says to me is she doctor shopped until she found one who maybe wanted his 10 minutes of fame as well.

And yes PCOS is fairly common affecting as many as 1/10 women so this is obviously something doctors have a lot of experience in and does not make kate "special" or different than any other women like me trying to get pregnant responsibly even though the process often takes a long time.

Do celebrities hire these tweet ghostwriters? Kate wouldn't be able to pay anyone much since she wouldn't be making much.

*******************************

Most [real] celebrities don't write much of anything themselves ... Even the seemingly spontaneous banter of late night talk show hosts is written by a staff of writers. My brother writes for a famous comedienne’s stand-up act and television show – and he writes most of her tweets as well. Nothing is what it seems when it comes to celebrities….

Kate's too vain to hire a ghost-tweeter -- remember, she has that gift-of-gab and all, and is so witty-ish that I'm sure she believes she doesn't need one. Plus, she so desperately needs her tweeties to feed her insatiable ego that she’d never turn over the constant stream of attention to some minion. Twitter is the last vestige of her STAHdom, and she's hanging on to it with a death grip.

Yes, that's a major component. I'd forgotten about that part. She was easy to judge. Still is.

Kate, at the time, was easy to identify with. It was easy to think, oh that could easily be me, and I'd be so grateful for whatever help people wanted to give.

Nadya, oth, it was/is too easy to say...oh, well, I'd never do such dumb things, so she deserves what she gets.

People don't seem to realize that Kate made the same decisions Nadya did, she was just more conniving about it. Which is worse, imo.

Thank you for sharing your story of PCOS. Kate also said she did not ovulate and did not mention any physical symptoms leading up to the diagonsic, at least not that I remember. I'm wondering how she would know she wasn't ovulating unless she was seeing a fertility specialist. Her high school & nursing pictures show her looking very normal and none of the physical signs. That is why I feel it doesn't match up with the rest of her story: marrying in June 1999 and I think 1st attempt was Fall/Winter 1999 then got pregnant with twins Jan/Feb 2000. Any doctor in his/her right mind would have advised her to try before running tests to confirm. After all, a doctor wouldn't tell a 18-year-old to have her fertility ablility tested before she was ready to have children, wouldn't they? She had to know BEFORE getting married and how did she tell Jon? The how she knew/found out interests me, although.

PCOS Mom said...

Just to add one thing. I too showed no signs of PCOS. In fact my doctor took blood and tested for this just to be thorough. She thought there was no chance it would come back positive. So you can have PCOS and not have any symptoms other than a lack ovulation etc. Now years after the initial diagnosis other signs are showing up but none initially and so I wouldn't say Kate is lying just bc there were no visible symptoms.

Silimom said...

Yes, Fakers - Jon's father paid for their fertility treatments, at least that's my understanding. When you private pay anything, you're not going to have to wait beyond regular scheduling conflicts. They're not going to turn you away. Doctor's love people who pay them directly so they don't have to deal with insurance.

LB - Kate may have had irregular periods which wasn't an issue until she decided to get pregnant.

My question has always been " Why the rush?" They were married in June and pregnant 7 months later. Why not just have stopped to enjoy each other before rushing to have kids? They were both young, in my opinion.

To me, the desire to have more children than you could possibly afford, does indicate a "mental illness." These women crave attention, both good and bad. These women, Kate and Nadeya, may have more in common than we could ever know. I do agree that it is maddening to see the pics on TMZ and see how those kids in CA are living while their mother spends outrageous amounts on her hair cuts. Sickening, really. So many famous people tried to help Nadeya. Nothing has helped. Kate was smart enough to use her situation (kids) to make the big bucks. Nadeya was not as smart or cunning. Too bad she didn't get lessons from Kate on how to "grift."

Kate's Going Down said...

The point about freebies not paying the bills is an important one. Yet another way Kate is severely stupid: grifted crap can't be sent to the bank in payment for mortgage, can't be sent to the electric company, etc. I doubt she's been able to grift free private school tuition.

So I don't really care if she gets six metric shit tons of dishwasher detergent, ziplock bags, apple juice, gift baskets of chocolate and shoelaces, she can't pay her considerable bills with any of it, even if she sold 100% of what she grifts.

Ditto for any trips, travel, etc. Paying to send her somewhere (which I doubt anyone does anymore!) doesn't pay those bills, either.

And there's no way she's making money off her tweets. You have to have celebrity CLOUT to even make that feasible! She has none. Think about it: her only paying job (we think), is part-time work for COUPON CABIN. Come on. No one is going to pay her to tweet with 80K followers, most of whom are empty accounts (and they do look at things like that).

Eight months with no TV show. Nearly two months since the TLC contract ended, and no TV show. Her financial situation is showing in small ways, mostly with the kids, and she'll fight hard to hold onto this lifestyle, but it will end. She's a has-been reality TV persona. A Z-lister, if that. A point of curiosity who, if she's ever mentioned these days, would be mentioned in a "Remember so-and-so?" kind of way.

Bye, Kate.

(#114) Just wanted to repeat that Kate is most certainly either getting money or free merchandise to tweet these endorsements. She is buying Twitter following to boost her earning potential for the marketing (the more followers, the more money you can make).
---------------------------

Yes, I agree, TLC Stinks, it is quite a little racket she's got going on. If Sears or Nordic Track did in fact give her a treadmill, why aren't they up on her website? What about Keurig and Starbucks? She has a "Lovable Products" tab all set up, it's been there since Day 1. WHY has nothing been posted there yet? (Except for her oven-cleaning tip--is she now a spokesperson for toilet snakes and Swiffer pads?)

I wonder if she was advised not to put anything "grifted" on there, for fear of the taxman. She must be reserving that spot for mfgrs who come across with a paycheck for any endorsement, not just free products. One way or another, if the quid pro quo for the tweet was the treadmill, or anything else for that matter, it should be taxed as income. I don't think she can argue any longer that major corporations just want to "gift" her with things. Seems to me the tweet is a clear indication of a barter, exchange of promo for product. Hence, TAXABLE. Hope you're keeping close track, Can-Do Katie. Ask your good friend milo, who claims her husband is a CPA. She ought to be able to keep you on the straight and narrow as far as tax regs are concerned.

....I have a child home w/ a cold 2day.... thank you @sears that I can still run...at home on my new amazing Nordic Track C2150 treadmill!

Absolutely classic way to lie while telling the truth! This is perfect manipulator-speak:

"I have a child home w/ a cold 2day" meaning there's a sick child home with the babysitter

"thank you sears that I can still run" meaning this is the perfect place to stick an endorsement

"at home on my treadmill" meaning IF I were at home, I could run on the treadmill

Got it? If anyone misinterprets this to mean that she is actually at home with a sick child loving up her newly-grifted treadmill, it's not HER fault. That's NOT what SHE said, it's what YOU stupidly misinterpreted.

Way to go, narcissist! Goal, score, and touchdown!

I hit puberty at 13 and my cycles were highly erratic. The symptoms Once a Viewer(#147) wrote about happened to me at age 18. They still plague me to this day and I'm 65. Given the dark pigmentation and hair issues wearing a bathing suit is uncomfortable(ish)for me. Kate pregnancy journey has never 'rung true' with me. She made things sound as if she visited her doctor one afternoon and the next AM began fertility treatments. She never has shared what tests she had nor is she obligated to share. I had many medical tests/procedures:thyroid , pituitary gland, fallopian tubes were checked before the fertility treatments. My husband had a sperm check. The first specialist who did the ovarian biopsy wanted me to start Pergonal injections. My husband and I weren't comfortable with that plan. So we waited three more years and went to a different specialist. After updating some tests and having some new tests, this doctor recommended Clomid. I was monitored each month and became pregnant after six months. I was pulled off Clomid one month as my right ovary had begun to enlarge and the doctor told me that it could become as large as a basketball if I took Clomid that month. I have two adult sons-one with Clomid and my second son (without meds or trying) 17 (not a typo)years later. As a aside, in 1966 birth control pills were a new treatment for PCOS. My mother would pick up the prescription for me at the pharmacy. The pharmacy tech questioned why a 20 year old unmarried woman was prescribed the pill. Actually, it was nobody's business but my mother haughtily informed her that " 'she doesn't take them for THAT!'"

Maggie, I think Rhymes with Witch means, "What's missing?"

dumber than hammers said...

Nadya/"Octomom" was obviously irresponsible from Day One, which contributed hugely to the backlash against her. Not only did she have more children than she could support BEFORE the multiples, but some were special needs, and already in trouble, thanks to her non-existent parenting.

She had no husband, a dysfunctional relationship with her frustrated parents, spent extravagantly on plastic surgery, and would say anything to anyone, including saying that she has never had sex.

All of Nadya's children were conceived with medical intervention, and her doctor's medical license has been revoked. She paid for treatment with her disability checks, from various injuries at previous jobs.

Nadya was obviously deeply troubled from the moment she first appeared in the media, and notoriously unconcerned about her children's welfare.

Jon and Kate, on the other hand, appeared, at first (that is, right up until Kate's rejection of the donated non-matching crib and her infamous "the world owes me" interview with the Reading Eagle) MIGHT have been just a cute family trying to get by.

Of course, it got much worse as the public saw more and more about J&K, particularly the harridan K. But J&K got a better start.

Nadya was never easy to sympathize with. She's selfish AND seriously mentally ill, and totally comfortable with herself. Bad combination if you want public sympathy.

Racism is real, but I doubt it was much of a factor here. Kate wanted cute little Asian babies, and that's what she got.

I happen to think the children's quarter-Asian heritage is part of what gave them an "edge" in the early days. They were adorable, and not just another set of white multiples. Their difference was a marketing plus.

If you want examples of racism-tinged responses to multiple births, see any of the African-American families who have experienced HOM. No gravy train stopped at their doors. But Kate, yes, m'am, Kate owned the depot. Until the tracks got pulled up, that is.

Re Nadya, based on the deception involved (wasn't it shown that her doctor--who was also a crackpot--didn't know she already had 6 kids?), I am very surprised she was ever allowed to take all those children home from the hospital. And she was always a SINGLE parent!

What were the authorities thinking? It would have been so much less cruel to put at least some of them up for adoption as babies. I imagine it would be difficult, especially for the children, to try to place them with adoptive families now. If there ever is/was a clear case for state intervention, I think Nadya is it. I know the doctor has lost his license, but I think his just desserts in this case would be to attach HIS remaining assets to support this family as a deterrent to other medical "professionals" who decide to stray way off the reservation.

Oh and the check for the hair? Yeah, someone needs to sort her out pronto.

Silimom said...

I definitely think Nadya is ill. There are people who hoard things. I think Nadya hoards children. And the only thing stopping her from having more via IVF is that no doctor would touch her. That and, to my understanding, she used up all her embryos in the last round.

And that was one of the things that bugs me. I understand that she didn't want the embryos to be destroyed. However, given her situation, there was an alternative. There are organizations where people can donate their leftover embryos to be implanted into couples that can't for whatever reason, conceive their own child.

Alexis from orange county housewives wants a talk show just like Kate....maybe they can have a show together called "dumb and dumber" lol. In regards to dryer sheets, to save the environment and some money, put some fabric softener and water in a container and use a colored old washcloth. Put the washcloth in the fabric softener and wring it out and toss in the dryer. Use the same washcloth for each dryer load...softens and stops static cling.

the are Kardashians getting $40 mill plus 3 more season. I bet Kate wished she signed up with E instead of TLC.

Someone mentioned upthread that Nadya's doctor wasn't aware that she already had six children. It was my understanding that he was the doctor for most, if not all, of them. However, I could be remembering incorrectly.

It is a shame that Nadya was recently complaining that she didn't have money to feed her children and pay the bills, so that's why she did the topless shoot. Then to pay $520 for a haircut and style is absolutely ridiculous!

As far as Kate grifting, she can grift all she wants. It bothers me, but not that much. The reason being that all of the "grifts" that she gets are NOT going to help her out of the financial situation that she is in. She is slowly circling the drain, and going faster as each day goes by. She really needs to start thinking of future finances and how she is going to support her everyday expenses: food, mortgage, schooling, clothing, etc.

I just connot comprehend how she goes through each day without focusing on very real priorities for the future, instead of hair appointments and various marathons.
