Kate: 'It's a shame that Tony has been left only with a negative impression of our time together'

Kate's latest feud is with her former dance stomping-around partner

Tony Dovolani, Patron Saint of Dance Teachers
On Friday when CNN's Anderson Cooper asked if he was still traumatized by watching Kate Gosselin dance, Tony Dovolani replied: "Anderson, did you just call it dance? We didn't dance!" When asked if he needed a vacation after that, Tony said: "There was a lot of therapy involved."

Today, Kate posted an oh-so-serious response on Coupon Cabin. Said Kate: "I think it is a shame that Tony has been left only with a negative impression of our time together, especially after we spent SO many hours, days, nights and weeks working hard together doing our best in the competition. To Anderson Cooper I’d like to say this: I’d love the opportunity to be a front row spectator for your first dance as a competitor on the next season of Dancing With The Stars. C’mon , you know you’re hoping for a spot! I can only imagine how your view of the subject may change 180 degrees, not 360 degrees, if you are given the opportunity to cha cha cha! Hey, Anderson, if it does happen for you, what do you say I give you some dancing pointers over pizza sometime?"

Uh, I don't think Kate's history with pizza bodes well for that meeting.

This page says ##601-607, but there are only 3 posts. ????

I don't remember a whole lot about when I was a kid, but I do remember the smell of the white vinegar we used for dyeing Easter eggs. And I remember that the boyfriend (later husband) of our favorite babysitter used to buy us chocolate bunnies or small baskets or something - really sweet thing to do.

Read the latest CC crapola (thank you Meagler 97 on the last page). I wonder who's writing these things now!!!! How come the exclamation points only come at the end of paragraphs, and only one each time?

My folks never staged Easter egg hunts, but they would always hide my basket and I'd hunt for it before breakfast. My mom made a lot of our clothes because she loved to sew, and she usually made matching outfits for us when I was younger. My favorite Easter basket thing was always a good-sized egg. We'd each get one, with our name on it in some sort of icing. Mom and I always got chocolate coconut and Dad would get a fruit and nut one. These eggs were big enough to slice, and I'd have Mom slice mine so thin to make it last as long as possible. Once I discovered Mounds candy bars, I didn't try to make them last as long, LOL. After church we'd go to my grandmother's house and my cousins and I would trade candy out of our baskets. I can't imagine a basket crammed with all kinds of toys and candy and socks (?!) and batteries. $300 for Easter baskets? That's just ridiculous.

Ooops! Hit publish too soon. Dallas Lady -- I'm glad you're safe. Friends of mine moved to the DFW area recently, after losing everything in the Bastrop fire this past year. Got an email from them that their new home was badly damaged in the storms, but they're safe. Thank God there was no loss of life in this round of storms. Scary seeing the video of that big rig flying through the air. My prayers for everyone affected. I hope recovery is quick and relatively painless for all.

Prairiemary -- congratulations on the upcoming big event. Hope Mom and twins are healthy and happy. Sounds like your daughter is a great mom and her kids are lucky to have you for a gmom.

prairiemary, it always alarms me when someone says they consider complete strangers behind a computer screen as 'friends'. Please be wary. Don't reveal anything more of your location and details of your life. The internet is a crazy place. One can never be too cautious.

What on earth does 'no ticky no washy' mean?? It sounds like a different language...?

How do we even know for sure that the poster whose name is Dallas Lady is even from Dallas? Sometimes we get too comfortable with other posters. Please don't take as fact anything you read from an anonymous poster. I'd hate for someone to get hurt.

Thanks, Readerlady, I have been very blessed. I wish kate could feel that way, too, she is missing out on the simple things with her healthy kids.
Cautious, you are so very right! I have a problem of being very trusting, and need to rein it in a bit. I say these are 'friends', because we come here and vent similar frustrations about the way kate cares way too much about herself, and not so much her kids. I always wonder just why she can smile so big, away from them, but never that big with them. Sad.She just doesn't know how blessed and lucky she is. Happy Easter to you.

Count me as hungry for deviled eggs. I'm known as the gal who can't cook, but brought deviled eggs a couple of times to events and they went over extremely well. I love mine. Others have too much mayo or something and I can't eat them.

I agree it's going overboard in a big way to spend $300 on Easter goodies. OK so she says with coupons and stuff it's under a hundred, but still, it's not Christmas. Odd the way she overdoes some things and doesn't do other things, like Halloween, at all. I remember the smell of vinegar while coloring eggs. Sure was a mess. I'm glad I learned easier and cleaner ways of dying eggs. There was not one thing in the Easter article that could be of any use to anyone. If you don't know the tips she put out, you are too hopeless to exist.

The worst thing is freezing candy. Good grief, that's the worst idea I've ever heard. Old and white and cloudy---spend a couple of bucks and get my favorite, a hollow bunny, and call it a day. Actually my hollow bunny was being sold for the high price of $1.19, but I got it cheaper. Got two as a matter of fact, for me, in case the real easter bunny passes me by.

I would welcome a Kate-free break and when Preesi goes dark, I will also go on a Kate strike. I am so sick of Kate and I see that she has become more blatant in her manipulations to get attention by being controversial. Now it is almost like giving a two year old attention when they are having a temper tantrum,it reinforces her bad behavior. I will miss the posters here but will probably benefit from a detox from this toxic woman.

This idiot bought $300 worth of crap for the kids for Easter? That sounds about the same as what she spent for Christmas. And where, pray tell, does one procure $200 worth of gift cards? Especially when one has NO FRIENDS? Call me cynical, but I call bullshit. Kate is sadly obsessively frugal when it comes to the kids. Spending that much money on them, especially for a holiday that's easily handled by making a nice meal and buying some cheap candy, sounds out of character for her. I suspect she is overcompensating by proxy (lying to anyone still listening) for her wasteful 5 day trip to Vegas with Short Bodyguard

Dwindle, blah-blah and cat lover~

Thank you all so much for the advice. I really appreciate it. I just knew there had to be tips for this because tons of folks have multiple cats and they all get along fine. I just didn't know what the heck they did to accomplish that.

My cat is about 6 years old and she's very laid-back, very BIG, and very comfortable with people, even strangers....and de-clawed. My son and his fiance's cat is very young, quite small, shy of strangers, playful, has claws and is apparently the more aggressive of the two when they try to introduce them to each other. Oh, and they're both females.

My cat's previous owner had had her spayed and de-clawed....but then put her outside when she was apparently not getting along with her two huge rottweilers. My dad and I had wanted to get a pet for him at his condo and this poor thing just fell into our lap.....and her owner was thrilled that we wanted her. I fell madly in love with her and spoiled her rotten....and for this reason, she's totally oblivious of treats and just ignores them. I'm not sure how the little cat acts with treats. Our dog can't eat treats fast enough and would do almost anything to get them but not my cat.

I'm thinking that when they go away and I am over there babysitting for the cats, I will assess the situation and also bring a spray bottle with water in it.....then put them together and spray the water if they hiss....just to see what happens. I have a slight suspicion that my son and his fiance see their little cat as a baby. They've only had her for no more than a year, whereas I've had mine for at least 5 years (she is about 6 years old whereas theirs is probably only about a year or so old). They are sorta playing house in this nice apartment they got about a year ago and now engaged, they consider their little cat to be their baby/toddler.....so that they might possibly be over-reacting and as soon as there's a little hissing they grab them and separate them.....and are not really giving them enough of a chance to get past the hissing and have them get used to each other. This is what I'm suspecting....and why I wanted advice because I plan to see if I can fix this when I'm the one over there caring for them for a week.

Although my cat has no claws, she is SO much bigger than theirs....so I sorta see it as an equal match more or less. And the reason that my cat is so friendly with strangers, I assume is because she was outside for a period of time...rubbing up against strangers and getting them to give her food. And at that time, there were one or two other cats wandering around out there....so she might be more likely to not get all that rattled with another cat....whereas their cat is very shy. They adopted her from the ASPCA so I have no idea if she was ever around other animals before (other than her time at the ASPCA.....and my son's fiance did tell me that it seems to be their cat getting all bent out of shape, not mine....and she assumed it was because their cat was being territorial and seeing mine as the interloper.

I did see that show on the animal channel about the cats "from hell". I wish I had that cat expert available here to help me with this. I tend to be overly guilt-ridden and although I doubt this situation is upsetting them (they seemed to really want my cat and had really liked her for several years...way before they got their own)....but I still feel driven to remedy this situation, as I'm feeling guilty that they nicely took her for me and are now stuck with this situation. I think they had hoped they were getting a friend for their little cat....and not expecting this.

Thank you all again. I'll let you know how it goes later this month. At least I'll be able to assess the situation personally and will be able to give better information. And I am also going to research the internet for tips, as suggested.

dee3 said...

And back on topic here...I think that prior to Kate going on twitter, blog black-outs might have had some impact...but once she went on twitter I don't think it would make any difference.

But honestly, without this site I would be more hurt than it would hurt Kate because I really like it here and have made lots of internet friends and enjoy being here. The Gosselin blogs have all become their own social groups and are now much more than just about Kate at this point.

Plus....I'm having a good ole' time watching her implode. I can relate in a way to those who so badly want to see her disappear altogether, as I sorta saw it that way back when I was totally frustrated at the height of her celebrity. But now? No...I'm loving watching this. To me, she's getting her just desserts and I'm loving every minute of it....and would hate to see a black-out here. And would also hate to see a black-out on the other Kate sites, Preesi's and RWA, because I love reading there too.

I think that those who don't want her to get ANY attention need to take another look at the situation. This is NOT the same as it was a couple of years ago. That was then and this is now. This is NOT what Kate had had in mind for herself and I feel confident that she's not happy about how things are turning out. She is NOT getting what she wants at this point....and I'm having a ball just watching it.

Gawd. I have a couple things to say. Kate is always calling people haters for attacking her. BUT when she attacks someone, no one calls her a hater. The open hate letter to Tony and Anderson would be considered an attack because she is basically challenging them, isn’t it? it’s also stupid of her to turn Tony’s interview into a platform for her to latch her claws in, bemoan and whine about a question Anderson asked Tony. Sure, it was about her but if you look at their faces, it was obvious they were joking. The interview WAS ABOUT MARINA AND TONY BEING ELIMINATED, NOT YOU, KATE! That’s why she come off looking rather dumb, if you ask me.
In regards to the Easter post; I’m not sure what kind of message Kate is trying to send…shower the children with gifts or how the importance of celebrating Easter? Easter has fallen victim to being overly commercialized just like Valentine’s day, etc. It’s now a money-making business and that just rubs off on me. It’s not about buying a new outfit, candy, or spending money you could have saved in case of a rainy day. I don’t ever buy candy, outfits, whatnot because that is not what Easter really is about. The kids really only care about the eggs, isn’t it? her ‘traditions’ keep changing so let’s see what she says they are going to do this year.
By the way, I’ve discovered that candy doesn’t freeze well for an extended period of time. I know at least one of the reasons is because of the preservatives companies use nowadays to extend the candy’s shelf life. They degrade over time and are nasty if left in the freezer too long. I always notice the difference when I freeze homemade vs. store brought desserts. Homemade cupcake freeze very well and will last long time unwrapped in the freezer. That’s why my cupcakes always end up in the freezer! Candy also get incredibly HARD when frozen. I tried freezing some 1 million grand candy bars and they were ruined. I think because the chocolate covering and caramel filling freeze differently so they didn’t mesh well once they were frozen. You might extend candy’s life by taking it out of its’ wrapper and cover it with plastic then put in a freezer bag.
It’s funny she is saying to buy candy through out the year when she herself doesn’t practice what she preaches! She brought Halloween candy THE DAY after Halloween. Gawd. What happened to the 400 cookies she made that she claims she makes every few months? That could have been used in place of mass-produced candy as a money-saving tip.

This is completely off subject except as it relates to Twitter rants and narcissism. Keith Olbermann was fired from his latest show on Current TV. So critics are chiming in on Twitter. Olbermann is firing back--doesn't have a problem with name calling his "haters."

When one man (wearing a cowboy hat in his photo) tweeted about Olbermann being a narcissist, Olbermann blasted him in return.

I don't know much about Olbermann, but presuming he might actually be a narcissist (as TV channels are apparently filled with them), it would seem Twitter is a dangerous place for a narcissist to be. Yet they can't stay away or refrain from getting into Twitter wars, can they?

We never hunted for eggs growing up however my mom did hide the baskets (X7!) write very witty clues and we had to figure out where to find the basket from the clue. She was always very clever and clues got harder as we got older. I carried that over with mine. Good memories for little money.

Growing up devoutly Catholic...we celebrated an entire week of Easter services. Sunday morning meant new Easter dresses with hats. There was always an egg hunt, inside if the mid-west weather was too cold for outdoor hiding. We made pets of our chocolate bunnies before slowly eating them. I always started chewing off the backside so the front looked intact for a long as possible. One sister was an eat-from-the-ears-down purist.

Jumping In said...

Will these kids ever get away from eggs and have a voice at the table?

She could easily put a variety of healthy cereals/granola, a big bowl of prepared fruit, yogurt, whole grain toast/bagels on the table and let them choose what THEY want to eat. She could even put out a platter of scrambled eggs, but letting them have some say in their breakfast choices would be novel. I don't have kids of my own, but did just that when my nephews and nieces visited us as children. They had healthy options, and the freedom to choose what they liked. Seemed pretty simple to me. I never "announced" at breakfast, it was an easy meal to let them pick their preferences. At dinner, they ate what was being served, but I took care to cook the things I know they enjoyed.

Am I way off the wall here, or is life as complicated as Kate makes it out to be?

Anonymous said...

I see Kate is egging her kids to death. Those kids will hate eggs when they grow up. And Kate, if your chickens make too many eggs, then get rid of some, take them back to whomever you bought them from.

Yes, candy does not freeze well at all. I put Em-n-Em in the frig, never do that. When they thaw out, it is a chocolate mess. They melt all together. All candy will do that. keep them at room temp. Test your candy if it has been several months. For white powder stuff, fungus, taste stale, smells weird, throw out. A money saving no- brainer tip: don't buy a lot. Everyone knows their child and how much they eat. Little kids, one chocolate 3 in solid chocolate bunny or whatever animal is more than enough. They sell the jelly beans in hand size packets, 1 or 2 of those, then some dollar toys, Barbie doll, small cars, from Target Dollar stores, michaels, etc. Older kids, a small item they may have been wanting, with candy. Jewelry for girls. Look at the ready made ones to get idea. Easter baskets usually phase out by time kids hit 12.

Once a Viewer said...

Ha, yes, true. Some of them (Mady?) didn't like eggs already!

I still put together Easter baskets ( modest ones) for my older teens! Candy, a nailpolish/some little thing for my son. Tradition. Now I'm off shopping for them, $10 limit at Walgreens and then grocery store for our feast. Hmm, do I need eggs? Yes, with all the deviled egg talk, yum/ Maybe I should build a coop...

Oh, PrairieMary: I have relatives from Moose Jaw! :)

I'm sure that the kids don't want eggs each and every single day.

Anonymous said...

Don't encourage the kids: there is nothing wrong with catching bugs and butterflies in a jar. The point being, is to do it as a family/teaching/learning thing, not to be cruel. The purpose being is to catch bugs and look at them, talk/learn about them(which mom dad whomever, go and look them up, on the net), then let them go. You don't keep them, which is why it should be supervised. Explain to them why you have to let them go. This teaches them how to be gentile with bugs, which crosses over to pets, spending time with your kids(making memories),and the kids learning something.

IF Kate had friends, she could share the eggs. Or give some to her 'helpers'. Her advice to use gift cards is so bogus, fine if you have them, but that's not really the way one saves money normally and regularly. She remains a tool, an out of touch with reality tool.

Many of your Easter memories are like mine - simple, with some candy, church, big meal/egg hunt with extended family, etc. I still can't resist buying robin's eggs and licking them and painting my lips blue or yellow or whatever, before eating them. Very heartwarming stories - thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Why can't Kate give back? Take those eggs to the food bank! We BUY eggs at our food bank and we LOVE when someone brings them in. We have folks who save their cartons and bring them back, and the local food bank probably does too, and they would happily give her some cartons to fill up with fresh eggs. Especially now at Easter, people would absolutely love receiving those fresh eggs.
But typical Kate, she never thinks beyond her own face.

They like to snuggle with them at naptime & bedtime. My Jack Russell/Beagle uses it as a pacifier. Yep.

Traditionally in our house, we all receive Easter baskets, filled with candy/chocolates.

We also give baskets to family & friends that we celebrate the day with- one per household though, we're not Rockefellers...

Anyway, regardless of what you think of Tori (I happen to really like her), she is a hard worker and very successful business woman. Unlike Kate. Another missed opportunity for Kate, because she has no drive or motivation or work ethic.

Ah, I love hearing the Easter stories.
I admit to going overboard for this holiday, worse than Kate. I still send our grown kids, and of course the grandkids, Easter baskets with lots of gifts.
No little ones visiting this year, so my husband will have to endure yet another egg hunt for him. I put them evereywhere and it's fun to see how long it takes for him to find them. Usually several days because he's not an agressive hunter. I fill them with candy, love notes, coupons for things I'll do and tiny gifts.
I don't judge Kate harshly for the baskets. I judge her harshly because I don't sense she's doing this out of a genuine desire to please her children. It seems like she buys the children material objects to show them and the world that she's a good mom.
No number of gifts can make up for her attitude and neglectful parenting, it doesn't work that way.

I'm a little late on the Easter tradition convo, but my mom had a great one. On Easter morning, we awoke to find a string tied on our bedroom doorknob, which we had to follow throughout the house...around chairs, under tables, through the hangers in the closets...to find our baskets with a Russell Stover Strawberry Cream egg for me and whatever the green one was for my brother plus generic chocolate bunnies with lots of room for the eggs we would hunt later. What great fun! It was double the fun when I did it years later with my 4 children. These are family traditions, things that are done year after year for generations, not just when TLC arranges it, foots the bill and films it.

My brother and I both still have our Easter baskets, btw. I assumed everybody re-used them from year to year.

daughter will receive: sugarfree gum, choc bunny, candy bars, Altoids, brown sugar-vanilla body spray, chocolates (they will split a package of Easter themed ones!)

total $19.39

btw does anyone have the Christmas Tree Shoppe nearby? It's a great place for bargains from seasonal goods to food, furniture, dishes, linens, books, greeting cards, pet supplies, plants... I love it! Often go there for such shopping for holidays. oh, and they have themed sox, Kate!

Sigh...I am just coming to terms with what a complete MORON I am. See, all my kids (except the youngest, who is not in school yet) made honor roll this term. Every one of them! That has never happened before, so we decided to throw a lttle party in the backyard. I made virgin pina colada mix--pineapple juice and cream of coconut, stick it in the freezer for a few hours, then scoop into some cheap plastic pina colada glasses you got on clearance at the party store. Pour ginger ale or Sprite over it to fill the glass and then stick one of those little paper umbrellas in it. But make sure you don't put a pink umbrella in a glass meant for a boy, or you'll never hear the end of it.
Anyway,we hung paper lanterns, hubby grilled some steaks, and we toasted each of the kids with our pina coladas and made cheesy little speeches.
But then I realized that if the kids are getting good grades, then that means that I must be doing something right. Not them, ME! ME,ME,ME. Where's MY party? Where's MY speech? Why do THEY get all the credit? WAAAAAAA
Just kidding. I'm a proud mommy.
By the way, that's MY pina colada recipe. I invented it. But you all can use it. HINT: if it's for grown-ups, put some rum in it before it goes in the freezer. Drink a few, and you'll end up wearing the paper lanterns on your head.

Hey Texas gals--glad y'alls y'all are safe (Is that right. Wandering off topic here, then on to Passover...I met Anne Richards at a reception, when she came to speak. I had a long conversation with her about how the state of Texas is like Iraq, in that different regions had their own sect. It was between the time that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and within a year of her death.  She was a wonderfully spirited person, and it was a great loss when she died.

Passover--I am so touched by people's concern about including Passover in the holiday season, that I will reveal a secret that you will never hear anywhere else...We Jews LIKE to be excluded--it plays into our whole persecution thing we've got going. As Tevye said, "I know we are the chosen people, but, maybe once, you could pick on someone else?" (eyes toward heaven)--Fiddler on the Roof. We just don't have a commercially viable holiday. That's OK because, at a seder, it is mandated that we drink 4 glasses of wine. I think its so we won't notice how dry all the food is, since, between telling the story, all the prayers, and rituals and singing, it is impossible to time the meal correctly.

This year, I have a new (not Jewish) daughter-in-law, who is earnestly learning the traditions--she even tried to pry the family seder out of my hands (she is no match for a Jewish mother). We settled on her shopping and preparing with me for our family seder and she will host one next week with her family and friends. Since I broke my wrist, works out great, because 1) I can't imagine what my left-handed matzoh balls would look like, and 2) I can do what every Jewish girl is born to do--sit back and order everyone else around!

Anyway, all you Easter celebraters--don't worry about me, I'll be fine...you just go and enjoy! Might have to be Jewish to get that. To illustrate:  "don't worry about me, I'll be fine running from the Cassocks with my belongings on my back, sitting in the dark alone, or lying in a pool of blood, or fill-in any dire circumstance--I just want you to have a good time.

Seriously, my daughter-in-law is really great. My son's world used to consist of a computer and refrigerator, pizza boxes under the bed and a hamper of dirty clothes that also functioned as  his dresser. At one point, he didn't have a bed--he slept in his big leather chair in front of his computer. It tickles me that he always has clean, bright white socks and his t-shirts have creases from being folded right out of the dryer.

I love hearing about grandchildren from other bloggers--I am looking forward to that, hopefully within a few years.

I agree--tickee means ticket, or claim ticket. Meaning, if you don't have your claim ticket, you can't pick up your laundry (washy). I missed the original post, so not sure of the context, but I have always interpreted it as relating to putting the time in, attending to detail or paying the price in order to get the reward.

My dad owned a travel business and every year he took us to New York for the Easter parade, and then off to the Rockefeller Centre to see the Rocketts. My mother had us all dressed up in new outfits, complete with Easter bonnets, and white gloves, can you imagine?

We went to mass on Easter Sunday, then to Tavern On The Green for brunch after. For kids from small town Ontario, Canada this was thrilling for us, and something we looked forward to every year.

Our parents would hide the Easter eggs around the hotel room and we would squeal with glee while wondering how the Easter bunny found us in New York! Not a battery, a pair of socks or previously frozen candy to be found, that would have seemed like a cruel joke, really.

My father died when I was 12, and I can honestly say, we never asked our mother about going to New York for Easter again. We didn't miss the trip, we missed our father. It always bothers me when Kate maintains the loss her children feel without the trips, which is such nonsense. Her kids miss the presence of their caring father, not another "hairplane" ride. If she really understood what memories are made of, she would get that.

I'm a HUGE Chopped fan, as well! Hubby & I like to cook, and if either one of us makes something new, the dreaded words we don't want to hear are, "You've been chopped."

That means the new recipe/experiment didn't quite pass muster.

Yesterday, I joked that last year, Kate hid 700 eggs...and it was rather sad that the kids wouldn't have 700 eggs this year, due to the absence of TLC in their lives.

But then I joked that with their chicken coop, perhaps they really DID have 700 eggs, after all...and I guess, based on this morning's tweet from Kate, I was right. I just didn't expect the kids to be having to EAT 700 eggs this year! :)

I will post our traditional Passover main entree  recipe--Moroccan chicken. I have also made it with just vegetables and with lamb-- it would be a great Easter meal. Substitutions and additions are easy to make, but the spices should be kept in proportion.

It is prepared with spices, which include cumin and ginger  (have to dig up the recipe) dried fruit ( I substitute my favorites--apricots and figs), kalamata olives and chicken thighs. Like my famous Vindaloo Lamb, all of the main ingredients can be bought at Trader Joes.  Even my very picky eaters love it. I have settled on this recipe because there is a traditional Passover dish called tzimmes (Yiddish--closest meaning is a brouhaha. In this context, it refers to a melange--mixing it up). Anyway, that dish has prunes, carrots, orange juice and sweet potatoes. (Believe me, you need the dried fruit to counter the effects of Matzoh--if you get my drift) So this dish replaces that and it also references the Mediterranean Jewish foods in the Sephardic tradition. My family is Ashkenazi--Eastern European, but I like incorporating other traditional dishes into our meal.

We are going shopping today and cooking on Friday.

By the way, eggs are eaten as part of the seder meal, as a symbol of life and hope--all of your yummy sounding deviled eggs have made me think about adding this to our family tradition.

I always used to say JOKINGLY "Dont worry about me, I'll just sit here alone in the dark all night. You go, have a good time." Or... "Dont worry about me, I dont need a winter coat this year, you go ahead and spend on yourself and enjoy." We would all tease that I must have been Jewish in my last life, hehe.

NOW we are finding out that on my mother's mother's mother's German side, it's possible we WERE/ARE Jewish! We found reference to a name in the family that points us to a Jewish family in a Jewish area of a principality of Germany in the early 1800's.

I mean no disrespect to anyone! I love celebrating our human similarities and differences, yet I know some folks find offense.

Also, I grew up Lutheran and raised my children Lutheran too. When my kids were growing up, our Pastor at the time insisted that the young people learn of and participate in "Old Testament Traditions" as he called them. And that included a yearly field trip to participate in seders. He was very focused on the young people and the kids learning our religious similarities. I could go on and on about his views, but I will spare you all. :)

I've watched since the beginning and noticed some of the judges (ahem Scott Conant) have mellowed a bit and are quite likeable afterall haha. Hubs and I have been long time back alley gourmets so we like to yell out what we'd make when they open their baskets. Pretty tough sometimes.( My prized possession in my kitchen library is a beautiful old 1961 revised edition of Larousse Gastronomique. I always say if the house catches on fire I'll grab THAT first. lol.) Anyway, Chopped is one of the few shows left on FN that I watch. I like Worst Cooks in America too. Anne Burrell rocks! Love that attitude of hers. We don't Alton Brown up here anymore. Is he still on in the states?

RE: Deviled Eggs. I recently started putting a jalapeno on top of them (mine are made with miracle whip, dijon mustard, salt, pepper, paprika on top. The jalapeno gives it a little bite. Didn't think I'd like it but I ended up loving the taste combo.

As far as Easter..I always made a basket (reused basket each year) with chocolate and assorted candy put into some plastic grass. It was cheap and easy. I would hide the basket and they kids would hunt for it. Also they would dye eggs to eat..and for egg hunting I would stuff plastic eggs with candy and dollar bills (didn't add money til they were teens) . Easter never broke the bank for me. I cant imagine spending $100 - let alone $300 worth. Kate is going to have fun driving from store to store with 8 kids trying to redeem a bunch of coupons and gift cards.

Her tips were stupid. Most people do a basket and hide eggs. Where's the killer savings in that? Just because you use pennies in eggs? Also, I don't know anyone who just happens to have $300 worth of sheeple gift cards laying around. This was a ridiculous blog posting. As for batteries and socks? Who said baskets have to be brimming? She tries to overdo it but it comes across as empty as always.

Also don't understand..if kate buys candy to freeze (yuck) year round..how is it she didn't have any Halloween candy available to pull out after forgetting to trick or treat with the littles. She contradicts herself almost daily now.

Lastly..if she wants to have a "fab" Easter then why scrimp on the kids and give them socks? Did she blow all of her money in Vegas? Why doesn't kate cut back on HER needs so her little money makers can share in some of what they made?

I think the kids would have been happy with dyed eggs (she has millions right) and a basket with some Easter Candy. She could have spent $30 total $40max and had a nicer basket. Gift Cards for Easter? really? Seems impersonal. Give me some creme eggs, chocolate bunnies, box of nerds a couple assorted chocolates and some jelly beans my kids were good to go. The fun of Easter was going to church and hunting for eggs. It's so simple. You don't need 700 eggs and u don't need gift cards. No one cares. They want to hunt and have fun.

My son asked me today (he's 18) if we were doing Egg Hunt this year. He loves it. It makes him happy to relive his childhood in the family home so I'm doing it. :0)

Also, I'm glad we aren;t doing a blackout but I still stand by my opinion that I wish twitter would.

OT: Paula Deen is on the cover of Prevention Mag, this month, and they interview her about the whole diabetes thing, the media mess etc. Paula said, just as most of us here said on a thread a short time ago, that she was angery at herself, blamed herself, was in denial, believe a pill would fix it, I think that was what she said, and shock. She also said: how come her brother didn't have it, since he lives almost the same life style as she did. It was 3 years of denial. She even didn't want to tell her husband or sons, but she did, said it was hard.
As for the drug company that some of the media was claiming paying her for advertising the diabete drug: Norodisk? came to her and asked her to do some of her recipes for diabetics, she said to them:"how did you know I have diabetes",(cause up till then, Paula did not say anything). The drug company said, you are type 2?. That is what happened. Paula Deen is a full type 2 diabetic, she takes metaforim, actos, and i can't remember the 3rd one. She was told to lose weight and eat right, and exercise. She said it has been hard to give up some of the foods she loves, so she is working with one of her sons on making recipes from her old cooking, for diabetics. And the deal she has with the drug company, she is donating the money they pay her to the Diabetic assoc. Interesting article.

I DO certainly agree w/ that!!! I'm not comparing her to Kate. It's her bawdiness and inappropriate behavior that grates on me...riding on the back of Robert Irvine at an event (there are pics) with a glass of red wine in one hand, exposing her butt at events, fawning all over men...I've witnessed it all. You can Google why she's being sued for the racist stuff...too much to go into here.

Aggiemom, I so agree w/ you regarding her "twang"...she has become a caricature of herself. The first time I saw her on FN was a Christmas special, her accent was barely detectable, and I LOVED her...that was many, many years ago.

My best friend lives in North Carolina and doesn't sound like that and can't stand her, either, because of her fake persona.

I know many people love her...that's fine...she's just not my cup of tea, but to each his/her own.

Tucker mom: I understand where PD was coming from, she was in denial most of that time, it took her 3 year to accept that she was. went from one drug to 3 after her second A1C test, that's jump, she must have it really bad. She also said she never had any symptoms, so when the doctor did the test and told her, she told herself he was lying, she can't be.

I too wen through that denial bit. I was taking metaforim, low dose once aday, I thought, take it from a couple of months and that would be that fixed. It did not work out that way, the second A1C test was the almost the same .5 over the border line, my doc said you are type 2, even at .5 over the border. So I'm still on metaforin, take twice a day 1600mg total. But PD is taking 3 drugs a day, and probably is checking blood sugar daily(I'm not doing that). watching and reading labels(pain in the but), tryin to eat more veggies, watching carbs, giving up some things, sweets were never a problem, I'm not a sweet eater, I don't crave them(I like candy but don't crave it) and sodium. Tryin to exercise(not my favorite thing).

Off Topic.
I am moving out of my beautiful home in 10 days.
Will be living in a hotel for 2 months.
After that we are moving halfway across the country. Time to downsize, plus there are many job opportunities where I am moving too.

This is the last Easter where my kids and I will be in the same state. They are stuck here due to legal issues for now. Will try to get their cases transferred but it will take a while. I am really sad over moving away. I did not think the house would sell so fast - only 15 days on the market. I thought I would have 6 months! Ugh, The only time I have good luck is when I DONT want it.

As I look back over raising my children my only regret is the times I did not spend with them. I wish I could go back and do it all over again. You don't realize how much empty nesting will hit you until you are faced with being so far away from the kids. I now regret the times I though of "me" before them. It wasn't often but I still wish I could have that time back and do over. I hope kate realizes sooner rather than later how precious this time in her children's lives are. I worry she is going to keep running off as much as possible. Sadly, once her star is burned out her kids will have grown past this stage in life and she will have 8 teens who are going to be involved in their own lives and won;t be craving time with mom. Kate is going to find out the hard way that any mistakes you make as a parent come back on you big time once you have teenagers. I have never seen a mother who leaves her kids as often as kate does for non work related functions. She is crazy to be missing so much time with her kids. She already shares custody time. That alone should be enough. She can travel then. Instead she rushes off during HER time also..leaving the kids to be raised with practical strangers. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want my kids absorbing someone else's way of raising kids. I would want to do it myself. For someone who is such a control freak she sure is lax when it comes to her kids having a stable routing.

It is sad to me to see kate miss out on real memories. She is only a few short years from her kids being teens. The teenage years are difficult and she will miss those cute little faces grinning up at her. There is so much time later in life for a mom to have constant "ME" time. Why rush away the good parts?

That's one reason I guess I like to hang on to traditions of our family(Easter baskets!) as long as possible and they enjoy it.It is a pleasure and privilege to be a parent ( mostly !) and I can say I thoroughly have enjoyed my kids, all through the stages and ages. Kate certainly has already missed so much, mainly by her attitude.

Screw Kate Gosselin. I just started a new job last week and I'm spending my free time getting our apartment ready for my boyfriend's family to come visit us. I'm so excited to put together Easter baskets for his little nieces! My brother and his family are in Pennsylvania, actually not far from Kate, and sadly I don't get to see them much. By the way, and this just echoes what others have been saying here for YEARS, but my brother told me that people in the area don't like Kate because she took from her community and gave nothing back. He doesn't follow the drama, it was something he volunteered to me out of the blue when we were talking about local notables.

When will Kate learn that this is what life is about? Spending time with family (who are irreplaceable!) and doing kind things for others. The reward is seeing happy faces and being a part of that joy. She really is stuck at the maturity of a twelve year old.

Easter Memories - my grandmother on my dad's side used to hide a dozen eggs for each of us. I had older cousins, but my brother, one cousin and I were closet in age. She was in her 80's and she would hide the eggs in the woods surrounding her home. My mom and dad did egg hunts for my kids and nephew, they did plastic eggs w/ money and labeled the eggs, so in the end each kid ended up amount the same amount of money, since my kids were older than their cousin. My kids are spoiled, but it's fun - my kids still expect something in their Easter Basket and my daughter is about to be married - she's only 21. So I'll indulge them, since this will be her last Easter morning at home :(. My hubby always gets me my white bunny too. Not to give away my age, but when we were young we always got a new dress, spring coat for church, hat, gloves, shoes, purse and my dad used to buy my mom and I corsages to wear to church. I'm a sentimental sap. And good news in our house, some may remember my husband getting laid off the day b4 Thanksgiving. Well things still stink on the East Coast, but looks like he may have a contracting job starting soon. We can use any good luck you've got out there.

Kate and the old candy for kids is just unreal. She preaches organic bs. With her, it is only bs. I always thought if I'm buy my kids junk at least it's going to be "good" junk. No Palmer bunnies in this house. We are lucky to have some local candy shops in our area to get some good bunnies and peanut butter eggs. I do fill in with some Hershey's etc. It's so easy to put some cute stuff in Easter Baskets, like a new bathing suit, side walk chalk, jump rope, the typical spring toys that seem to disappear from one year to the next. Never in my life did I have a hard time filling a basket w/ goodies besides candy and did not include a toothbrush. And the way Kate still brushes her kids teeth in the kitchen sink is abusive. No wonder they have rotting teeth - she doesn't make them drink milk, just sugary juice. I guess you pay now for milk or pay for years to come in dental bills. Kate is just no brain surgeon in the thinking dept. It's a shame the Gosselin kids will have no sweat memories of a happy family childrood

Hey, has anyone notice that when you google Kate Gosselin that only a hand full of articles come up now, like 2-3, not like a year ago, 40-50. If Kate got into a fight with someone on twitter, there probably would have been 40-50 or more articles about it. This time now 2-3? What a difference. Same with her trip to Vegas, 1-2 articles that's it. Gee, Kate is starting to fade. Kate trip to Aussie in Nov 2011 had more than 40 articles, even her bithday last year had that many, this year 1-2.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

My only issue is Kate won't buy milk because she claims she can't afford it (as she jets off to Vegas) The kids clearly love it, they gulped it up in that one episode.

Any dentist will tell you giving kids Juicy Juice and other crap like that is putting their teeth in serious jeopardy and we've even seen dentist episodes where they have problems. Naturally she blamed Jon for not brushing their teeth well enough, and not her own greed and ignorance giving them freebies juicy juice all the time. She would give these kids gin and tonics if a sponsor gave it to her for free.

Once a Viewer said...

Dakota 112: Milk isn't the issue with G kids' and their teeth. On the two episodes at the dentist, Mady and at least a couple of the tups had cavities- that's pretty young- cavities in baby teeth I think is somewhat rare. These kids were always drinking sugary juices out of sippy cups between meals which also aren't the best for teeth. While I think they should drink milk since they loved it at that farm, Kate won't buy it and says she loves to save by purchasing juices for 16 cents.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

The only reason the American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend banning juice for children is because they are afraid that children won't get enough fruit servings otherwise and they feel that on balance, a fruit serving is slightly more important than saving your teeth, and they've flat out said this. The dental professional organizations of course vehemently disagree and recommend never giving a child juice or watering it down severely.

silimom said...

@109 - Milk has sugar in it too. The bacteria in your mouth does not distinguish between sugar sources, i.e. "Oh, wait, this sugar came from milk, that's okay, we won't eat it." That is why mothers of young children are encouraged not to use the bottle as a pacifier, put their children to sleep with a bottle or let them fall asleep while nursing and to brush their children's teeth regularly with water and a fingertip toothbrush.

So if the kids have cavities, I would probably criticize her enforcement of dental hygiene (brushing teeth regularly and especially flossing, something even kids need to do) more than her giving them juicy juice all the time. Juice has more of a bad reputation in the child obesity department, and none of the kids necessarily seem unhealthily overweight. Speaking of which, I would be more inclined to be concerned that she is passing along her body image issues to her children, especially the girls.

As for the whole "to drink milk or not to drink milk" controversy, please remember that humans are the only species that continues to drink milk past infancy. Truly, in today's society it's not required and you can get your calcium from other food sources. I say that as an avid milk lover whose mother wasn't and I turned out just fine. I'm sure that the kids get plenty of milk at Jon's if they so desire. As I said, none of them seem to be wasting away in my opinion.

Once a Viewer said...

sillimom 119: Yes, you have made some good points. I think with the G kids, they did seem to wander around with their sippy cups all day between tooth brushing which Jon did- which meant once a day as toddlers since he went to work and Kate did not brush teeth till later on ( too vigorously!!) at the kitchen table ( where she also combed hair) The same would apply of they wandered around with milk in bottles or sippy cups- yes, sugar. But nonetheless, milk is preferable to sugary juice_-I believe Kate said she later learned to dilute it when one tup had an allergy? also she said in 'her' book that a couple of tups had to stay on formula longer since they were still small from preemie days. But I agree with your argument.

Moroccan Chicken Part 1

Spice Mixture
3 cloves garlic, minced (I use a rounded teaspoon of jar of minced garlic)
2 tbsp extra virgin garlic
1-1/2 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground ginger (I use jars of minced ginger or fresh)
1 tsp coarse salt
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
Freshly ground black pepper,to taste

4 chicken legs and drumsticks ( I use 6-8 boneless skinless chicken thighs)
1 -1/2 tsp lemon zest (or fresh lemon peel)
1 cup Greek olives, mixed green and black, pitted (I use Kalamata olives)
10 dried dates (I use a mixture of dried halved apricots, figs and cranberries)

1) Combine all the ingredients for the spice mixture in a large bowl. Add the chicken pieces and coat them well with the mixture. Let the chicken stand, loosely covered, for at least one hour.

2) Place a deep  heavy skillet over medium heat, and add the chicken, skin side down. Cover, and cook for 20 minutes (the chicken will cook in its ow juices--less time if using boneless.)

3) Turn the chicken pieces over, and sprinkle them with the lemon peel olives and dates.  Cover and cook another 20 minutes, adding a small amount of water if the mixture is too dry (less time if using boneless)

Moroccan Chicken Part 2
The only change I made from the original is that it calls for a preserved lemon (Meyer lemon), that is only available in specialty stores or needs to be made ahead. Since the insides are discarded, and only the peel is used, I just use lemon zest from a jar, or from a fresh lemon.

I always have the basics of the recipe on hand--once you have the spices, they will last a long time and the jars of minced garlic and ginger keep in the refrigerator for a long time. For more of a one-pot meal, I add vegetables--usually sweeter ones, like sweet onions, carrots and sweet potatoes.

The only thing that I never change is the spice mix. If vegetables are added, then the spice mix has to be increased--but always in the same proportions. My sister is a vegetarian, so I sometimes add tofu and other vegetables. I have made it with lamb, which is also really good. I use boneless, skinless chicken thighs because they don't dry out like breasts do, but no problem with substitution. There is a note in the cookbook that dark meat is suggested because it is closer too pigeon meat--the traditional Moroccan version.

This is a great dish to make the day before--it melds the flavors overnight. If I am going to serve the next day, I try to  undercook a little, and then finish it off baking in an oven at 350. You can also let it marinate in the fridge overnight before cooking.

The juice thing -- my kids never got hooked on juice, probably because we didn't make it available to them. They drink milk at all meals, and with snacks, and in between times they drink water, sometimes orange or unsweetened grapefruit juice. I'm amazed that so many kids are addicted to Juicy Juice.

Anonymous said...

Even if Kate bought milk, just as she buys her Juicy Juice (I'm not even sure I would call it real juice, just sugar-laden concentrate stuff) I don't think Kate realizes that beverages such as milk, soda, juice, etc. are not meant to be consumed at a constant rate. You can be thirsty even after you've had all the milk and juice you want but you'll probably still be thirsty because you haven't had any water to drink.

She could buy milk, which obvious she must if she bakes in marathon batches of cookies and whatever, just don't give your kid milk at every meal. If you do offer water once they've finished that glass of milk.

I don't have kids but I've seen a lot of parents just refill a juice cup instead of saying that's all the juice you get but if you're still thirsty you can have water.

What I think it boils down to is as parents you have to allow your kids to brush their own teeth especially by 7-8 years old but it's still your job to see that they do a good job on it. A quick vigorous brush isn't going to do much if you only do it twice a day at the table. Brushing your teeth and teaching your kids to brush takes a bit of time, I think.

Yet another example of putting her own desires before the NEEDS of her children.

We never had soda when I was a kid. We drank milk with meals, never fruit juice. I wonder, too, if kids need more and more sugar to be satisfied. I am always surprised when we go out to eat (and we frequently do) that so many young children and teens order soda with their meals.

Twittering I didn't even LIKE soda as a kid. I found the carbonation was painful.

I really do wonder sometimes if giving a little kid very gentle drinks like water, low-fat milk and watered down fresh juices, makes anything else seem "shocking" to their little taste buds.

You know what, my taste buds knew what was best for me. This would be a good thing, to let natural aversions to high punch-factor drinks dominate.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

The Juicy Juice thing is one of the first most egregious hypocritical things that Kate did that screamed FAKE to most people who watched and didn't win her any fans.

Kate spent most of her time in the kitchen glorifying the merits of organic, healthy, nutritional meals for her children. And for a brief time I was actually interested in what she had to say about this. But then it became apparent that healthy and organic went out the window if she could get something free. There is no way a mom as obsessed as Kate was with nutrition would ever feed her kids that much Juicy Juice.

Kate can give her kids what she wants to drink, its her problem to deal with the cavities not ours. But to put herself out there as some kind of organic guru and then to give them Juicy Juice just speaks to what a sell out she is--if it's free, she'll pour it down the kids' pipes.

She quickly struck me as someone who wasn't truly committed to her children or her principles on raising children if a better deal, preferably a free product placement, came along--not attractive.

Re: Soda

I grew up in the 70's and was a teen in 80's. I don't remember there being all that much soda around. I remember coca cola. Tab. Pepsi. A & W Root Beer. This was back in the day when it came in glass bottles and aluminum cans were a new fangled thing. We drank soda, my parents bought it occasionally but we also generally had water, milk or juice at dinner time.

There also wasn't a great deal of fast food available. We had a McDonalds, an A & W, and a local taco and hot dog/hamburger stand in town and that was it. Portions truly were about 1/2 what they are today.

I remember being excited when my parents went out because we got to have frozen dinners. In the aluminum trays with the foil on them that you had to cook in the oven. We ate out or my dad would bring home chinese food or pizza every once in a while, but for the most part my mom cooked dinner.

We live in a very different world today, truly. One of convenience foods (not just frozen, but also prepared meals you can buy through the deli at Safeway or Whole Foods), fast food, restaurant chains (didn't have those really either - I think we had a Hungry Hunter and the rest were privately owned restaurants in town), etc. I think the idea that kids crave more sugar today than the past is true. Because of the way we eat, we naturally consume more sugar than 30-40 years ago.

Veering slighly off topic here to jump in on the juice/milk conversation. Recent research has shown that drinking low-fat chocolate milk after a workout is extremely beneficial to muscle recovery. Cow's milk provides a very good carbohydrate-to-protein ratio. It provides both whey protein, which is a fast-acting protein that allows amino acids to get right into muscle tissue, and casein protein, which is a slow-acting protein that provides a steady stream of amino acids over a longer period of time. Chocolate milk also provides a higher concentration of glycogen, which helps muscles refuel and recover.

Oh, and one more thing. I invented chocolate milk.

I know. Maybe because it was the diabetic in my family or maybe it was because that's just what you DID, but when we were thirsty "back in the day" we would get a glass and fill it up from the tap. It never crossed my mind to open up a soda bottle. Oh and we usually bought the 2 liter bottles rarely cans. Aluminum cans were only for picnics of traveling and I remember them having a heavy aluminum taste to them.

Soda (actually we call it pop) seems to be EVERYWHERE now. It's like you can't go to any kind of function without soda being the beverage of choice. It's way more prevalent than even alcohol.

silimom and She's Nuts, I remember those frozen dinners from when I was a kid. They were absolutely terrible, and I absolutely loved them! They were a special treat because my sister and I were allowed to pull out the TV trays and watch television while eating dinner!

We didn't drink much soda back in the stone age of my childhood. We usually had milk, Hi-C or Kool-Aid.

EM - Good luck in your move to your new home.

Thanks, everyone, for all the great Easter and Passover stories. They have been fun to read.

Okay NOW let the Kate jokes begin.

EM said...

Count me in as a milk family. I drank milk with ever meal. My kids were the same way.
All of us have been very lucky with our teeth as well I always contributed it to the milk and lack of soda.
As a kid I almost never drank soda. I didn't like it. My kids grew up in a house where it was never handy. Them being from the sugar generation they would order it if we went out to dinner once they were teens but to this day they only drink it if they are eating fast food or at a restaurant. Soda is just never something I have on hand in my house.
As for juice..my youngest liked apple juice. I bought the concentrate 100% kind and always added an extra can of water. Even as they got older. It's just too sweet. They never had more than a glass a day of it.
I don't know why I'm babbling. I guess just because being a milk drinker it's hard for me to see kids not drink it. I would imagine a lot of stomach aches with chugging juice all day. There is something about a glass of milk that I can't explain. It's filling, filled with calcium and vitamin D, it's hydrating, it has protein. If I was lactose intolarant, I would opt for soy or almond milk. I just can't imagine a milkless existance. lol Personal preference. My kid and I love the stuff.

Personally I think kate thinks that damn juicy juice is healthy because it says 100% JUICE. In her mind she doing something right.

Re: Humans being only ones drinking milk. Humans are also the only species that cooks their food but I am not going to start eating raw meat. :0)

Thanks all for the well wishing. I love starting new chapters in life BUT this is the first chapter ever that I am starting without my boys. It's scary as hell.

Admin, We called it pop too. I was born in Pennsylvania. When I moved to Texas at age 10 I was surprised to hear NO ONE called it POP. As a matter of fact, they call it Coke. It's was bizarre to me. People would order a Coke and the reply would be "what kind" Meaning..Dr Pepper, Sprite, Orange Soda etc.

Em--Good luck in your new home and I hope that the legal issues are resolved quickly.

Jane-
Have had chocolate matzoh--it's Matzoh and chocolate--how bad can it be? Hoping for a grandchild soon1 Are your grandchildren being raised Jewish? We're having the Seder on the second night--Saturday. I'm jealous that you're so far ahead!

Admin--the spices are the only part I always follow, so, no turmeric, no warranty!

Twittering and Twattering--haven't made in a crockpot, but it would probably work well. Let me know--I've wondered too! Would  probably brown the chicken or other meat first. I haven't. Found a way to screw this up yet!

Pink Straight Jacket-pretty much the same Charoset recipe I use--I don't peel the apples.

Dwindle and New Kid-- see below!

By the way, I married an Irish Catholic guy. Neither of us really thought religion was important, at the time. When our son was two, he came home from pre-school and, with his fat  little dimpled arms crossed across his chest, he sternly said: "OK, which are we--Chanukah or Christmas?" My husband answered, without hesitation, that we are Chanukah. My husband promptly enrolled in conversion classes, and within a few years, he completed the requirements. Our son had had a bris when he was 8 days old--the ceremonial circumcision performed in front of friend and family, in our home--(oy veh!), where he was given a Jewish name. Within a few years, we had two daughters and had a joint naming ceremony in our home. At this point, we had three children, been married for 5 years and my husband had converted--not to mention the fact that he was, by then,  27 years old. At the naming ceremony, my husband's father told him that his maternal grandfather was a German Jew. Well, it explained a lot--his girlfriends and closest friends were all Jewish. But, seriously? Why didn't he know this before?

My daughter married a young man that she met in France--his mother is French, and his father is Spanish. My son-in-law has really enjoyed learning about Judaism--his family is non-observant. I have always felt completely comfortable with him--he fits right into our family. Last year, his father told him that his family was Jewish, but had "converted" at the time of the Spanish Inquisition. Funny that my son-in-law's father saw the significance of his son marrying into a Jewish family--even though it was 10 centuries ago, while my husband didn't know he was 25% Jewish.

As for my son, I am fairly certain that their children will be raised Jewish, but we haven't talked about it. My daughter-in-law put up a Chanukah bush last December (kind of missing the point--she hasn't gotten the whole alienation thing yet)-- complete with Jewish-themed "ornaments". Her mother has bought her a seder plate and a Waterford draydel (Chanukah toy), so, pretty sure their children will be raised with Jewish traditions.

PJsMomma--We'll be opening the door to welcome the prophet Elijah. If you can find us, come on in!

Tomorrows recipe will be Ex Nurse's foolproof Matzoh Ball soup!

With all of the lovely recipes and money saving ideas we share here, I wanted to share a way to save on fresh fruits and veggies. Many communities have food co-ops. Not the fancy health store co-op. Its a volunteer run program where all of the money is pooled and then spent to buy a large quantity of fruits and veggies at a bulk price.

The co-op I use is Bountiful Baskets. They have locations nation wide so you may have a pick up location in your town. (http://www.bountifulbaskets.org/) I pay $15 a week plus the card processing fee for a lovely basket of fruits and veggies. The average savings through this co-op is usually around $30. Many sites also have organic shares and bread shares. I live in a small town so we only get the regular fruit and veggie share.

I am a child of the 80's and 90's. We had some soda but it was always a treat. We usually had it in the form of root beer floats. Today, I tend to drink carbonated water and not actual soda. I like the fizz of the soda but not the sugar. I do make my own beer and I have a keg system for it because its easier then bottling. I always have a 5 gallon keg of soda water. I sometimes add juice to it but most of the time I drink it strait up.

As a child, I drank milk with every meal. I have gone away from that as an adult. I just dont like the taste of the ultra pasteurized milk. I have found regular pasteurized milk in my town so I am now drinking more of it.

e twitter meltdown will make for nice breaks during my busy day tomorrow.I am going to spend the day making beef stock (will be canning it this weekend), putting laundry away, and spring cleaning the bedroom. I may have to break out the box of wine (in Kates honor) and make a drinking game out of her tweets in the evening. I will have to add stuff to the nasty bo wine down to make it drinkable, so, I will make Sangrias.

I have been watching Julia Child. Its a great contrast with todays cooking shows. The old cooking shows were informative. They were not designed to entertain. Julia Child was has an entertaining personality so people liked to watch her. I love it when she messes up because she shows you how to fix it. Tonight on the episode I watched, she said that its important to taste your food before you serve it. Looking at Kates concoctions, I doubt that she follows this advice. She might actually understand why her children hate the food she feeds them if she had to eat it herself.

I am concerned about the fact that her children have no idea on how healthy food is suppose to taste ,and look like. She feeds them lots of starches, salt, sugar and fat. They eat few vegetables, protein, and milk. There is very little variety in their diet. The latest example of this is the eggs. If we believe Kates twitter, Kate eats nothing but salad.

They will also have unhealthy ideas about body image. I have no doubt that Kate tells them that they need to be skinny in order to be healthy. She seems to think that the skinner the better. She thinks that she needs to starve herself in order to reach this ideal. This is going to backfire at some point. I hope that the children are not the ones who suffer because of this.

Sorry for the ramble. You have all talked about this before. I just needed to clear it from my head so I can dream about something nice tonight.

As kids growing up we drank buttermilk with our meals or iced tea or lemonade. It was a choice. There was always iced tea or lemonade in the fridge. We never saw any "flavored" drinks. My mother cooked with buttermilk for cornbread and biscuits. These are the things that I still love today.

I don't believe a word of that Easter blog. I think she had to be reminded of Easter and that is why she did the mean Tony and AC blog first. Those are the things that she would like to have done on her head. She would have fretted over and tweeted about that for days. She can't get that much done in a day. Now she is trying to get it done and I am quite certain the kids will tear the Easter baskets apart before she has a chance to get a pic or maybe now since she put it on the blog she will go out and throw something together, $300 worth, no way.

Pity Party said...

Oh and we also had ice water! It always struck me that the kids went on all those long treks without a water bottle. I can't go to the car without one and neither can my child.

Last year we had matzah covered with caramel and chocolate found in a specialty shop. It was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (channeling Kate - shudder) Thought I'd try to make it this year, but it's not looking like it will fit into the schedule. Sigh. Also doing second night seder -- work has been busy and getting it all together for Fri night wasn't possible.

I have just one grandchild (so far) and the kids say she'll be exposed to both religions. She's only 6 months and beyond precious :)

Somehow all the cooking and table arranging gets done in time for the seder, no matter which day it's celebrated. And it's always beautiful! You're doing it with a broken wrist, Ex Nurse - treat yourself gently :)

I really need caffeine and sure do wish I had one of Admin's egg mcmuffins this morning. Later friends.

Re: milk: lol, we called soda soft drinks! Soda was ice cream in soda water with flavor, in Canada.

...our pediatrician claimed chocolate milk was fine if it was low fat and better than no milk. My son we often joked ( and still do) we should buy a cow for, as he is addicted to milk- but he eats fine although is long and lean. My daughter did not like milk but would drink it, but prefers chocolate milk.. Neither liked 'soda' until age 14 or so as we didn't have it around and they didn't like the bubbles. My son drinks it on occasion.

Re: tweets: I know, that 'working' bit bothered me too...maybe a change from saying' paperwork' as we all made fun of that! As for the shopping, I don't think anything on her blog is true or her shoe system either. I recall she used to say Jamie and her twins swapped clothes depending on size.

But no doubt there will be a pic of her table and the baskets or her dinner...I wonder if they ever eat in that big dining room. they seem to always eat in the kitchen.

Re: Swanson : YUM...and yuck, the same with us, big treat on TV trays. It certainly is a different world. Remember Jiffy Pop popcorn during Sunday Disney TV movies anyone?

Ex Nurse...I am learning a great deal from you. I will be trying some traditional Jewish recipes. How are you doing this with one hand? Thanks for sharing.

EM -- again, best wishes. You seem to have a positive attitude, which will serve you well. You will be able to keep up with your boys difficulties in a variety of high-tech ways that won't be totally satisfying, but so much better than the old days of phones on a wall!

Milk....I grew up on a farm. We had chickens and the neighbors had dairy cows. Just natural to exchange eggs for milk. Our neighbor delivered the milk in a big stainless jug-like container that always felt cool. If you have never had FRESH milk, I don't think I can describe the thick texture. Before every pouring, you need to scrape the cream off the top of the bottle. That cream makes butter and is an amazing addition to any recipe. Real cream makes a cup of coffee a desert! As a kid, I never did get over a distaste for milk.

I remember Swanson frozen dinners, too. Those mashed potatoes were awful...with a melting bit of yellow something in the center. But, we loved them! I was the oldest and in charge when mom and dad left. I learned how to pre-heat the oven due to those culinary masterpieces. We had to bend deep into a chest freezer to make our entree selection. If I recall correctly, mom bought them on sale 3/$1.00.

You guys provoke memories that are buried deep...thanks.
