Law and Order SVU: Patrimonial Burden

Last night's Law and Order: SVU was a brilliant ripped-from-the-headlines satire based heavily on the Duggars and other high profile sex abuse scandals, including a side plot pulled from the story of sex offender and Jon and Kate editor Bill Blankinship. If you missed it, you can watch the full episode on NBC.com or below.

Who done it? Was it the pervert camera man who saved naked footage of the girls? What about the creepy older brother who was shipped off to Ecuador for a "mistake"? Could the Warren Jeff-like pastor-slash-lawyer have something to do with this? Are the Bakers really a Bakers dozen or will DNA prove otherwise? Mariska and the team crack the case within the hour with a couple great zingers (Chastity Empire, lol!), a lot of binge watching and some solid detective work. Well done, SVU.

I have watched many cooking shows for years and have seen the crew, medics patch people up. I saw the show where Ted jumped in and grabbed the boiling water pot. I have seen him open things too.

Yes, the judges are sympathetic to the kids, and the adults. I just looked up and saw the pan, the flames, the kid struggling and I just turned it. But I know they were there ready to help.

Speaking of dogs in the bedroom, when we brought our yellow lab rescue home a few weeks ago, we wondered where she'd like to sleep.
Would she sleep through the night?
Would she need to go out at night?
Were does she want to sleep? Our bed is open to her, but she'd decide.

Well, that dog jumped, I mean, FLEW onto our bed, leaping 5 feet across the floor onto the bed!
OK, guess you've been on a bed before we got you!

Honestly, why aren't these kids using induction panels like many chefs do today? Yes, they can still burn themselves but there is no open flame!
I have an induction cook top and my cousin who is a chef has used it and tells me it is just as good as a professional gas cooktop.
Safety first!

lol!! Ours is the opposite. Oh, she loves to sleep on the bed, but if she is on my side when I want to get into bed, I just give her "the look" and she moves. If she is in a deep sleep, all I have to say is "Please move your butt" and she does. If she's at the bottom of the bed and her head is in the way so that I can't see the television, I just say, "Your head is in the way" and she finds another spot on the bed. I never really taught her those things; she just seems to know!

If I want her off the bed to change the sheets, adjust the mattress, or whatever, all I do is show her the grooming brush and she's off and running!

There's an article this morning on theweathernetwork.com about raking leaves which my creepy, obsessive-compulsive, passive-aggressive, leaf-raking neighbor lady needs to read.

Here's a little snippet:
(teehee)

Some experts say you shouldn't rake leaves. Here's why.

Leaving leaves on your lawn won't harm it, as long as it's shredded. On the other hand, a thick layer of in-tact leaves left to decompose all winter can result in high levels of mold come spring.

The easiest way to shred leaves is to wait until they dry and go over them with a lawn mower. Research out of Michigan State suggests it's perfectly safe to leave these small pieces on your yard all winter.

“Fallen leaves offer a double benefit,” NWF Naturalist David Mizejewski adds in the blog post. “Leaves form a natural mulch that helps suppress weeds and fertilizes the soil as it breaks down. Why spend money on mulch and fertilizer when you can make your own?”

She not only cleaned up our front yard, she raked the boulevard strips in front of the next two houses as well and swept the street gutters clean as a whistle.

I'm thinking about not shoveling our sidewalk when the snow comes just to see how she'll behave then. ha! just kidding. Thankfully she and her husband go to Arizona or some place warm during our cold winter months. I wonder if she cleans up the RV resort park down there, too.

To make turkey gravy ahead of time you can get turkey wings.
Saute mirepoix. Remove.
Brown wings. Remove.
Add more fat (butter or oil) and flour. Cook 2 min.
Add chicken or turkey stock to thicken.
Add whatever dripping from turkey just before serving.

Too bad so sad - The Chopped kitchen sets take a lot of abuse (as do the Master Chef kitchen sets). Induction tops wouldn't work. Additionally, if the individual cooking isn't used to an induction top they would probably have more trouble using it than a gas range. With gas you get the visual of controlling your heat (flame). Just my opinion.

The poster said that she has had quite a few other dogs, but I don't know if they were all Labradoodles. If so, she's had experience with them; if not, then perhaps she is unfamiliar with the closeness that this breed needs. I agree that this dog does not want to be separated from the family, and especially not at night.
--------
My point was that Labradoodles are bred to be companion dogs, so this is not a good strategy for this particular breed, although it may be appropriate for other breeds, because they need to be with their families. I guess I assumed that her previous dogs weren't Labradoodles, because she didn't mention that in her original adoption post or any of her later posts. Just because something worked for other breeds, does not mean it will work for all breeds. I don't think anyone else made that distinction, so that is why I brought it up.

Anyway, just thought I would mention that Darwin, my 9 year old mini Labradoodle, and I are taking a training class this afternoon to become certified as a pet therapy team.

I can't imagine that any new puppy in the home, Doodle, Shepherd, terriers, or Heinz 57s, would like being removed from the family and allowed to bark all night. It's just not right. It's not appropriate for any breed. I couldn't sleep knowing that the dog might be barking and crying out of loneliness, insecurity, or because he or she needs to go outside.

I raised show and pet quality poodles and even though I knew that they would go to new homes, they always were allowed to be with my family, sleeping at night in close proximity to our room (and sometimes in our room). It was important to the socialization process.

Has the Labradoodle been recognized by the AKC or any other kennel club? I've been out of the loop with breeds and standards.

Do you think that she walks around with a pooper-scooper and a plastic bag?

The leaves issue. For the past two years, I have left a thin layer of leaves on our yard, partly because I hate to rake and because I wanted to see what happened to the grass. Our neighbor down the road is out catching every leaf as it falls. Not a single leaf remains on his lawn. He has a company come out on a regular basis and fertilizes his lawn, babies it and whatever else.

Since trying my leaf experiment, I've not fertilized nor done weed control or prevention or anything else. The verdict: our lawn looks 100 percent better than the neighbor's, so in our case, not raking has worked. No mold issues, no burned out grass...so far!

I would bet the farm on it. She probably carries her broom with her wherever she goes too when she's not flying around on it. She keeps a close watch on people walking their dogs when they go past her place. I listened to her chastise a gal whose pup pooped on her lawn, even though she was apologizing and had a poop bag with her to clean it up. It was embarrassing.

What a miserable existance if you're THAT concerned about your grass.

Sounds like your lawn is doing well so you prove their point. Next year I'll be armed with a good excuse to tell neighbor lady to drop the rake and put her hands where I can see them if she tries to clean up our leaves again.

True, but people with those busy hands should put them to better use than raking up the neighborhood leaves. They could volunteer at a soup kitchen or some place where helping hands are truly needed.

Mel--hopefully your daughter's dog won't feel that way about anyone else. Growling dogs may be ineligible for certification. One of the dogs snapped at a trainer when he tried to open her mouth--she was allowed to stay, but I doubt she will be able to proceed without first doing a lot of training .

Darwin did well, although it was a very difficult environment.the dogs were not allowed to interact with each other, and had to sit or lie on the owner's left side. The first 2.5 hours were information that will be on the test. The last 1.5 hours was for assessment of certain behaviors, such as how he reacts to sudden noise, disabled people with distinctive gaits, using wheelchairs or walkers.

Rainbows and unicorns--I agree that the method the OP described is not what I would do. Or think anyone should do. bUt there are some breeds that may do better than others., and may not exhibit stress and anxiety at being crated all night, away from the family. Labradoodles really need to be with their family, so it doesn't surprise me to hear that the pup is stressed out and soiling in the crate.

Labradoodles are not yet recognized by AKC. The Australian Labradoodle is a very established and consistent breed, ad they a have been bred for over 25 years. There is a breed association that is working towards recognition, by establishing breed standards.

However, the advent of American doodle breeders have muddied the waters. ThebAustralian breeder club is thinking about changing the name to prevent confusion.
Anyway, they are super great pets, who love to be with family. They are fairly active and love to socialize with other dogs. They are typically extremely easy to housebreak, once they reach the age that they have control.

I know at least 75 other doodle owners from my meetup group, and have never hear of a Labradoodle pooping in the crate or barking all night. But then I don't know anyone that would leave their doodle alone when he was so obviously stressed and distressed.

So the Seewalds are not 'ready' to reveal the baby's name, but the People picture clearly shows the $$$ signs in the new mother's eyes. Saving the name reveal for another check is what I think. The blatant greed is almost amusing.

&&&&&&&

Pathetic, and the sad thing is that the drooling fans can't see it. Can they sleep at night, not knowing the name of this newborn? Although amusing, the Duggar girls' addiction to the limelight is frightening. There is something really "off" there.

Totally OT -- some time ago some here asked about scrapple. Today is National Scrapple Day. It's really not as bad as it sounds, and yes, you slice it and it can be frozen, but it must be sliced before you freeze it. Seriously! This serves 12, if you can find a dozen people who like it! It is an acquired taste.

As with the turkey and Thanksgiving recipes, just scroll past if there is no interest in this! ;)

Here's how you make it:

1 pound boneless pork loin, cooked and chopped
1 cup cornmeal
1 (14½-ounce) can of chicken broth
¼ teaspoon dried thyme
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
½ cup flour
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Directions:

In a large saucepan combine pork, cornmeal, chicken broth, thyme and salt. Bring to a boil, stirring often. Reduce heat and simmer about 2 minutes or until mixture is very thick, stirring constantly. Line an 8-by-8-by-2-inch baking pan or a 9-by-5-by-3-inch loaf pan with waxed paper, letting paper extend 3-4 inches above top of pan.

Spoon pork mixture into pan. Cover and chill in the refrigerator 4 hours or overnight. Unmold; cut scrapple into squares. Combine flour and pepper; dust squares with flour mixture.

In large skillet brown scrapple on both sides in a small amount of hot oil.

I like mine on the crispy side, with syrup. Then again, I always order my home fried potatoes "burned."

A butcher speaks out:

http://lancasteronline.com/features/food/what-the-heck-do-they-put-in-scrapple-anyway/article_a30d61e8-09b0-11e5-84a2-331b56e36a91.html

I read this morning that Debi Thomas, the former Olympic skater and a Stanford trained orthopedic surgeon, is supposedly broke and living in a bedbug infested trailer with her fiancé. They have a GoFundMe page trying to raise $10,000 to finance a reality TV show among other things.

Debi was the first African American person to win a medal during the winter Olympics. Surely she could be an analyst for one of the networks. As far as her medical career goes, apparently she has let her licenses lapse and hasn't worked as a doctor in the last few years.

It is sad to see someone with so many opportunities and talents fall on hard times, but it is especially galling to see them try to land a reality TV gig as their main way to earn money.

It's like a chip is missing.
Debbie is playing with dynamite if she tries to become a reality tv star. There's something going on with her that is psychological. To strive to become an orthopod is quite an achievement, not to mention her Olympian days.

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/olympic-figure-skater-debi-thomas-broke-jobless-2015911

"Thomas does not currently have a job and said she is not interested in going back into medicine. She and her fiancé, Jamie Looney, are living in what was previously a bed bug-infested trailer. She attributes her current predicament to the high legal fees surrounding her divorce from her second husband, Chris Bequette, and the costly child support. Her 18-year-old son Christopher is now in college."

She must not have had custody of her kid if she had to pay child support. Also:

Thomas’ situation first came to light when she and Looney appeared on the OWN Network’s Iyanla: Fix My Life to work out their issues surrounding Looney’s alcohol and anger problems.

“He did punch me,” she told host Iyanla Vanzant in the episode, which was taped 10 months ago.

While I agree that reality TV "counseling" is a joke, I don't understand the judgmental attitude toward couples who choose to go to counseling before getting married. Why are people assuming that a couple who needs counseling is doomed to fail? That's quite an assumption.

Almost everyone who gets married in the Catholic Church is required to go to pre-marital counseling. Is the Church assuming that all couples are "dysfunctional" by requiring such counseling?

I think what Milo is referring to is the recently uncovered sexting scandal at a Colorado high school involving 100 or so students. Also, apparently there are apps that look like calculators or other inane things that, when opened, hide other apps used for photo sharing and more. http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/07/us/colorado-sexting-scandal-canon-city/index.html

Some of these kids caught sexting are really young and might be looking at child porn charges.

I give up. Was Kate Plus 8 renewed, is this just a series of specials, or has she signed on for the long-run, with more seasons scheduled after this one? Has TLC come out and announced that the show has been renewed? I guess cancelled never really means cancelled.

))

Remember when she said she wishes she had one more chance to grab at the brass ring? It makes me so mad that she who is so undeserving got her wish. But then I begin to wonder..what if, for whatever reason, TLC decided to bring her back but needed a reason so as not to eat crow. What if they said, you go on TV and People and say how much you have changed, how sorry you are blah blah blah. So she went on and made these statements, knowing that she was already given a second chance.

I hope she flops. She doesn't deserve more opportunities to live like a queen, supported by her children.

I can't begin to say how impressed I am with Bindi, on every level. My opinion of Terry has actually changed a bit through watching the daughter she's raised.
I do feel that Bindi has had to carry the mantle of her father all of her life, but she seems to be one of those extraordinary people who are born with fire and passion.
I do think that Bindi internalizes the pressure that the demands her life puts on her, and is afraid to let people down.
That can catch up with you after awhile. I hope she can put herself first once in awhile and have fun.
I used to think that DWTS wasn't a place for people so young, but extraordinary "kids" can do extraordinary things.

I just hope Kate doesn't push for it.

I wonder why Table For 12 never filmed again after cancelation. Was it the parents or TLC?
No fans out there that want to see how the kids are doing now?

I don't think K+8 will ever ramp up the filming back to the days when they were cranking out an episode a week, but TLC is still filming on a regular basis (after what seemed to be just a hiatus).
I certainly don't get the lather, rinse, repeat babyish b.s. they seem to film over and over again, but there are enough low information fans out there to keep it going for now.

Also- I don't get how TLC is still filming Duggars after over 600 companies have said they won't advertise.

It would have been a good and proper way to use Twitter. I don't understand why no public shout out to Bindi. The show has been on for weeks and weeks now, and nothing.
Even if (big IF) Kate contacted Terri or Bindi privately, she should still give a public shout out because her fans would be prompted to vote for Bindi.
I know the REAL number of Kate's Twitter followers is very low, it's the thought that counts.

I can't make heads or tails of this snubbing of Bindi but I think the best guess is she's jealous. Bindi actaully is that one in a million special snowflake. Genetics, 10,000 hours rule, whatever it is, she's special. Kate and Kate's kids aren't, like the other 999,999 kids, and Kate darn well knows it. Perhaps she's even tried to get the twins on shows like this, and failed.

Kate has a long history of being unable to be happy for other people's successes. We first saw this when she couldn't stand that Aunt Jodi had become a prominent, well liked "character" on the show. She is terribly threatened by other families with multiples and has made cruel comments about others. She sees life as a fixed pie, and if someone else is getting a piece, in her mind she's not. If she's following her typical pattern, she can't bring herself to find joy in Bindi's triumph. That's sad for her, because life is more fun when we enjoy other people's successes. Bindi should lose her, she doesn't need this.

Mel said...

Yes! I saw her on DWTS last night for the first time. I was prepared to dislike her as the spoiled brat child of Irwin mom. But omg, wow! She is truly something special!

The Gosselin girls could take lessons on how to behave. Hint: Bad-mouthing your siblings every chance you get is so un-couth. No one wants to hear that.

The Gosselin children appear not to have a special snowflake amongst them. But they could still make a go of it by just not being obnoxious brats.

The deer have taken over the city here. On the way home from shopping yesterday I had to stop twice to let deer cross the road. They hold up traffic. They're beautiful animals but they're also becoming a nuisance. We have three deer who regularly visit our back yard to munch on the cedar bushes.

A few years ago an oncoming truck hit one and the impact threw it in front of my vehicle.. It was awful to hear that 'thump' when I drove over the poor thing. I try to avoid driving at night now because there's so many of them and you can't see them until it's too late.

This is off topic but because tomorrow is Veteran's Day I thought some might be interested in this most recent way to honor our veterans. For those men and women who have served or are serving in the armed forces, Thank You For Your Service!

WHAT IS GREENLIGHT A VET?
America’s veterans are some of our nation’s bravest, hardest-working men and women. However, it’s hard to show them the appreciation they deserve when, back home and out of uniform, they’re more camouflaged than ever. Greenlight A Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green.

THE MEANING OF GREEN
Green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being. “Greenlight” is also a term commonly used to activate forward movement. The simple action of changing one light to green is intended to spark a national conversation regarding the recognition of veterans, and "greenlight" them forward as valued members of our communities.

They ALL went to the grocery store, except for Hunter, he is away at school and maybe Meri's daughter too. Spent 2500 dollars, I mean TLC spent 2500 for 8 days of food. I figured out that is 4.70 per meal, times 3 meals a day for 22 people for 8 days. I wonder if they had a budget. Could they have gotten 5K for more days?

That 4.70 per meal is too high!

This reminds me of reality tv as a whole. When you first sign on it is feast, but when the gravy train stops, it is famine.

Did you know that you can use cabbage instead of pasta noodles?

Cabbage sub for Spaghetti from Diabetes Daily

My wife went for her annual checkup today. She was telling her doc about my approach for lowering my BG levels. Her doc pulled out a sheet of paper that the doc had composed and gave it to my wife. In that paper she summarizes a healthy eating approach which avoids white bread, potatoes, rice, etc. It also recommends 4 oz of protein, a "colorful" plate filled mostly with vegetables,...pretty much just what many on this board propose.

The best news is now my wife is open to my way of eating. The doc told her it is not a diet, but a way of eating. I am happy she is now willing to try eating more healthy.

Anyway, to the title of this thread. The doc told my wife of a dish that she liked. It was to simply substitute cabbage for pasta when making spaghetti. We tried it for dinner tonight. I sliced thin segments of cabbage, trying to make it look like noodles. Then I put the cabbage in a pan with olive oil. I cooked it until crisp/tender.

My wife made spaghetti sauce, adding mushrooms, some ground beef garlic and other spices.

The dish was wonderful. I thought it would surely taste like cooked cabbage, but it was REALLY close to pasta spaghetti! I think I like it better than noodles.

Okra was made in a decades seasoned black iron skillet, fried to a crisp on the outside and tender on the inside.
