Blogger and reality star Jaime Primak Sullivan defends exploiting her children

Facing mounting criticism from her readers after posting daily updates and photos of her young children, the Yahoo mommy blogger and 'Jersey Belle' star lashes out.

Sullivan says it's okay to exploit her kids. Here, we respond to her flawed and misguided reasoning.

  • Sullivan says the support of strangers is a beautiful thing.

Our response: It's normal for human beings to want to feel loved and supported. However these emotions almost all feel deeper and more sincere when they come from people you have a stake in, namely family and friends. Most strangers probably have all good intentions when it comes to offering support to another stranger, but how do you distinguish the good from the unhealthy or even sinister, especially when the support is for your little children? And why aren't these strangers concentrating their support on their own friends and family?

  • Sharing her children's humor brings joy to her 100,000 readers, which in turn brings Sullivan joy.
Our response: Again we ask, wouldn't the emotion of joy be felt much deeper if it were a grandparent, husband, friend or sibling your children brought joy to? What's more, children should not be brought into the world to bring other's joy. That puts too much of a burden on a young child who will not always feel silly or joyful. A child needs to be free to experience a variety of emotions, including getting angry and acting out, without the pressure put on him to make others happy all the time, much less complete strangers.
  • I never post if they ask me not to, Sullivan says.
This is good I suppose. However, it's not enough. The Sullivan children are not teenagers like the Gosselin twins, getting to an age where they fully understand what they want the public to see and not see. They are only seven, six, and four years old. None of them are even remotely old enough to understand the implications of posting a photo on social media. They are not old enough to even be told about what physical and emotional dangers could befall them from such posts, let alone capable of understanding those dangers. Sullivan needs to be the adult here and make these adult decisions for them instead of burdening them with decisions they are not old enough to understand. Sullivan also needs a much better understanding of her children's emotional and cognitive development before burdening her children with the complex decision of whether something should be posted on social media.
  • The risk the children might someday look back on what Sullivan did and resent it are not any greater than letting a child play football, go trick-or-treating at night or to a sleepover, or letting a child ride a bicycle down the street.
Not knowing how her kids will feel someday, it's hard to compare risks. The risks may be the same. They might be less, they might be much more. It will depend on her individual children.  However the risks Sullivan compared social media to have a very important distinction. Those other risks all enhance childhood to a degree so important that it's worth any negligible danger. Those risks all promote a child's social and emotional development. It's important for children to strike out into the world and learn how to navigate it, whether that's on a bicycle or at a friend's house, or playing a team sport.

Social media, in striking contrast, does not provide any benefit to her children. Social media does not make her children's lives any better or worse. It certainly makes Sullivan feel better. It clearly justifies her, makes her feel important, makes her feel validated, and is financially lucrative. But her children reap none of these benefits. They're just kids, too young to feel the complex emotional gratification Sullivan does after every "like".

  • Sullivan believe the risk of pedophiles coming after her children is unlikely and overstated.
Why take the risk at all when there is no benefit to them to plaster them all over social media?

  • As a parent, Sullivan has a "given" right to decide what's best for her children.
She does. And when she chooses to make those rights public, readers have a right to criticize it.  As one comment said so pointedly on Sullivan's blog post, "The real reason(s) that you let people watch your kids online is for the money and because you want to be popular."

Final thoughts. As for the #noshameparenting hashtag, talk about confusing the issue. No one is asking anyone to feel shameful about parenting. We're simply asking that parenting be done in private. What's particularly frustrating about this situation is that Sullivan is a smart and savvy businesswoman who has made it on her own. She spent years in Los Angeles as president of a highly successful PR firm for some of the hottest bars and nightclubs, and recently started venturing into movie production. Her husband is a high powered lobbyist  She doesn't "need" to exploit her children to be successful. Due to the Sulllivans' hard work and success, their children's privacy rights can be protected without need for them to earn the family's paychecks for their parents. We urge the Sullivans to give their children that right.

Over in TFW's County, I believe it was last year Kate posted on Twitter photos of the kids in their Halloween costumes at home. They do indeed wear them at home, but Kate may not let them wear anything that was purchased by Jon.

++++++++++++++++++

They may have been getting ready to go to the school festival, or to their friends' houses to trick or treat from there. Maybe they just got dressed up at home, had their pictures taken, and were off from there. Kate is really weird, but I just cannot see her not letting them wear costumes if Jon bought them. It would save her the time and expense at coming up with brand new costumes. It is not like they parade around the house dressed for Halloween, saying, hey, Dad bought these outfits for us, just to get Kate's dander up!

Then again, I may be way off base and she is putting together costumes right now, just to prove what a Super Mom she is!

TLC stinks said...

I agree. It makes sense they were dressed for a Halloween gathering somewhere. Bet Kate was livid Jon posted he took them costume shopping, LOL.

Susan1956 said...

Re: the Halloween costumes. Jon gave an interview in which he stated that he provides the children's clothes to wear when they are at his house, implying that the children do not pack suitcases at Kate's to bring with them to his house. So my impression is that the children's clothing, including costumes, do not go back & forth between the two houses.

Like I said the other day, maybe Jon floated a few pics out there so she couldn't claim she did it all alone. Maybe she's done that other years, took credit when Jon did all the shopping.

FlimsyFlamsy said...

TLC Stinks (#2), the mere fact that Jon exists makes TFW livid!
I think logic and reason go out the window when he is in the
equation. She still seems just as angry with him as she was
when they divorced years ago, and she doesn't realize how
immature that makes her seem. Whenever she makes some
lofty statement about taking the high road, she's either lying
through her teeth, or completely delusional.

Oh, yea! She was livid when Jon posted the vintage picture of him and the twins. She was livid when Jon posted the Halloween costume shopping with the kids. She was livid when the article of Jon and Colleen came out.

Oh, what about the Kate Coke? If she was a cool ex-wife she could of quickly got a Jon Coke and posted a picture of that. That would of been a tremendous help to all of the kids, psychologically.

But she's all about that negativity and evil mess to mess those kids heads up. Her day will come.

Her saying for years that Jon doesn't do this and that and she wants peace, Jon said something about peace. That made her livid.

Good for Jon. He has finally got his voice back.

So Jon is promoting Uber now on Twitter. Gee, should @Kateplusmy8 fans start tweeting Uber like her haters do any time she tweets a company?

*************

Carlene is such a dingbat. Jon tweeted something about Uber. He has a job. Promoting companies is part of his job. He is working. Kate has no job. When she contacts/tweets businesses it is a millionaire who grifts in hope of getting something for free. Again, Carlene, Kate wants gift cards, free items, free this and that because she has eight kids and unlike Jon, doesn't want to work. It is all about Kate and how much she can use someone to her advantage.

I guarantee you this is Khloe's father. He is Kris's hairdresser during that time. So, she tried. She tried and they said no. I'll bet they approved the photo Jon posted. She would never think to post a cute picture of them as youngsters. Teens love that stuff. Jon obviously gets that. She never will. She also probably wanted to get her mug in the photo. She does nothing without self-promotion.

TLC stinks said...

She tweeted yesterday as a response to tweeter that it's only a month away until her special. So far TLC has not announced anything but it appears she will be on, I'm betting, the Friday or Sunday night after Thanksgiving.

I doubt there is a gag order. She's just lost interest in Twitter until the shows are announced. Besides, the kids are getting too old for any cutesy tweets.

Hard to believe that it's been four years since the show was cancelled and TLC still has a relationship with her. Hopefully she has exhausted all attempts to get on some other TV shows (TLC likes this for ratings and cross promotion) and this Thanksgiving will be the last bundle of episodes if the ratings suck. The Jeff Millionaire romance was a last ditch effort to spike ratings. Really, the twins turning 16 does not even warrant a show, just a photo shoot with People. Just how many birthday shows, vacations or making memory shows can viewers tolerate?

TLC stinks said...

Leslie, I am glad it has not come out about Collin's schooling. Kate had to address the issue as a preemptive strike against any tabloid leak (maybe from Jon) that Collin was no longer enrolled at the private school the others attend (I believe). I also believe Kate was in denial for years that any of the kids had issues. I hope it was Jon who forced a resolution since he spoke publicly about his concerns. That was perhaps the only way to get Collin the help he needed. Kate's solution was punishment for his nonconformity. Most any other parent would do whatever it takes to get help for a child. I've always liked Collin but let's be clear, from the time he was a toddler I noticed his behavior was different just from what was filmed and he's not my kid! I doubt she bothered to have him tested which is a shame because early intervention is key if he has what I think he has. He's a sweet boy.

PJ, I agree. I don't envy her with two 15 year old spoiled teens. Those girls just are not going to put up with their mother's nonsense unless there is something in it for them. Finally...karma.

Redbird, I looked at Kate's timeline but other than the tweet about the birthday non-photos, I don't see anything about Jon's shopping with the kids or his 10 month or so relationship. Was there an article I missed? Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Kate was raging!

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I think a lot of things are contributing to Kate's absence. I think most of it is sadly probably filming, and all the couch interviews that are required afterward. As well, if Kate thinks they're hot to film her now she may spend a lot of time on her laptop coming up with episode ideas and may be back to grifting for product placements. That could fill up an entire work day for poor Schmoops.

The other part I really think is that now that the kids are older, she's actually getting pretty busy as their taxi driver and mommager. They are at some of the busiest ages yet still pretty dependent on a parent since no one really drives yet or knows friends who drive. That's practically a full time job. Unless she's going to fork over the money for a full time nanny, which I think is unlikely, there's a lot of work she has on her plate. It's actually probably going to be a relief to her when the twins can drive. As soon as she catches on that will decrease her workload and can shuttle around the Tups too, they'll be behind that wheel.

And maybe she has a boyfriend or a "boy" friend. That could explain a lot too.

Oh yeah and she's not stupid. She knows it could end at any time. Especially with TLC quietly easing the Duggars back into the lineup. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

She knows she is just backup filler when other things don't work out or they have a scandal. She knows she's second string. You might play, you might not. Eventually she'll be third string and then not at all. Best to just amass as much as you can while the iron is hot.

You know it's not just that she has two teens. She has two teens with some SERIOUS leverage. In a few years she'll have six MORE teens with some serious leverage. They have her over a barrel, and one wrong move and those kids will refuse to film forever. They know it and she knows it. Haha, good luck with that.

The nice thing about these kids is they are reasonably cunning enough to realize they are calling the shots here. Good for them.

And we said that for years. The kids will learn from her. If she wants to be manipulative, they'll learn to be manipulative but it's equal opportunity and they'll do it to her too.

TFW has spent a lot of effort estranging people. Eventually the kids will realize they can estrange people too if they want, including Kate herself.

http://ktla.com/2015/10/17/high-school-football-coach-defies-districts-order-prays-on-field-after-game/

This is a real interesting story that at first blush seems similar to Kim Davis but soon I realized it's not at all.

A football coach likes to pray on the field after games with whoever wants to. He has been ordered by his school district not to do that anymore because it violates federal law.

The coach decided he did not want to stop doing that, and that if it meant he would be fired, so be it. After the game the other day he went out onto the field and prayed and several people joined him.

Huge difference between him and Kim. Number one, he's not hurting anyone with his defiance but himself. It occurs after the game, no one has to join him and participate, and you can just leave if watching him do that is upsetting. Number two, he understands that this means he could be fired and he is not asking that they keep him on while he defies the law anyway, as Kim did. Unlike Kim, he is accepting that if he wants his way religious wise, he may have to step down. He accepts that maybe this job is not for him if he is not allowed to pray. Good for him. He can go work for a private religious school if it means this much to him.

He's got The Liberty Institute backing him, which for once seems like a much wiser choice than the Kim Davises of the world.

And quite honestly.....if he's just closing his eyes and muttering a prayer to himself AFTER the game when the event his over...and some people happen to wander over and join him.....I'm not convinced he's breaking the law.

Excellent point PA Dutch Mom. I can't emphasize enough how important I think it is for those children to witness that. It's concerning the ideas they may be getting about work and work ethic. The odds that they will grow up and be able to muster up the same kind of lifestyle Kate has with as little actual work she has done, is slim to none.

Even if they could, I hope they are learning that hard work feels better, more satisfying.

I think this should be in the past tense...WAS dysfunctional.

Kate doesn't seem to bother with her anymore, at least not much. She just throws a few bones here or there with no comments on the platitudes, the obnoxious questions, praises and whatever,, so I really do not think that there is a relationship on Kate's part. Milo seems to think there is, but she is delusional.

-----
-----

If I recall, I don't remember her saying that Kate would be disappointed if Kate saw her but asked how she envisions her. She did, however, say that Kate has seen her picture. She also said that she weighs 100 soaking wet and was looking for petite "slacks." Of course, all of that could be just hogwash. She also brought up that "potential suitor" stuff which was really odd (and creepy).

But you are right in that it is very strange that she does not want to meet the love of her life when she had so many opportunities to do so. She got rather upset at the time the block party was held when non-fans were egging her on to meet Kate, and tweeting TLC. She was actually huffy about it, telling them to knock it off, that she was happy with the "status quo," which meant not meeting Kate. There has to be some reason, and that is one of the big mysteries of this whole Gladys saga! You would think that she would want to grovel at her feet and cover them with kisses.

Michael Gross, who played the dad on Family Ties, was on Law and Order this morning and I knew he was on a L&O SVU and I went to imdb and looked up his credits. They have a bio section and I read that a fan had a picture of him and a pen to get his autograph at a comic con.
Here is what a poster said on the message board.

Yes, he has a great sense of humor. He reminded me of his character on Family Ties, Steven Keaton. When I approached him, I shook his hand and told him that I had been waiting 19 years to meet him. Without missing a beat, he said " The line wasn't that long was it? ". Hope to meet him again some day.

No, not ALL of the contestants have acknowledged Trump. For that matter, not ALL of the contestants are even still alive.

What does that have to do with whether clueless Kate is even aware of what is going on, a very major news story involving someone she has had numerous direct contacts with? That's the point I was making.

They had to do something. It is time for them to just go away, get off social media, raise their child and stop digging themselves in deeper. They can't seem to do that, though, because these girls are addicted to fame, thanks to Daddy and Mommy Duggar and TLC. Only time will tell what scam they come up with next, and there still will be fans dumb enough to get caught in their web, kind of like Kate's sheeple. The Kook Aid keeps flowing.

I'm surprised that she hasn't acknowledged Bindi on DWTS yet. I thought she harted the Irwins so much. But as with Trump it's always "what have you done for me lately". Maybe the Irwins were so caught up in DWTS they forgot to send a birthday gift to the twins. I'm really wondering if she's still filming or has been told to cease and desist. Her timeline is dead. Maybe she's been told to wait for the obligatory live tweeting.

The lack of acknowledgment and good wishes to Bindi is even more perplexing.

I think this woman really does get in her own narcissistic bubble when something good is going on for her, i.e. filming, and really can't be bothered to acknowledge or be aware of what's going on with anyone else. Or care. It's all about her. This is not the ONLY example of this behavior from her. We've seen this manifesting itself in various ways for years. It's just but one example of Kate ignoring, or not even being aware of, the major events happening around her.

I think she's updating her plastic surgery and has been told to stay off Twitter in the hopes of generating some mystery & suspense.

I love some of Kate's sheeple. If you exclude the really dumb ones from the mix, some of them are such colorful characters, curious beings, and strangely charismatic. Then there are the scary ones I wouldn't want to be near when they realize that Kate is selfishly using them and/or ignoring them.

The study of sheeple is both intriguing and entertaining. Most of them are so transparent and predictable, but with some of them you just never know what they will come up with next! I do feel sorry, though, for some of the special needs fans who want nothing more than a tweet or a response just one time. It seems that she goes out of her way not to acknowledge them no matter how many times they ask to be recognized.

Think TLC needed to plan some desperate filler while they were hoping for the Duggar backlash to subside (backlash hasn't subsided but the ratings will be gold with hopeful rubberneckers, and TLC and the Duggars know it). She's just going to be stuck in there somewhere when they need a filler and they know people are bound to be home trying to find something to watch, whether holidays or cold weather. She doesn't care now because she's been paid but she'll care later likely.

Actually I think she will air around Thanksgiving. The Duggars got an early promo because of the controversy and Impending Duggar baby. Kate is not controversial and there's no boyfriend to introduce, so she's filler. I hope she does air around Thanksgiving because most people will be watching football.

When you think about it, her $40k per episode is a drop in the bucket (considering her former TLC paycheck). She has got to be dipping into savings with the house and school expenses. We all know how expensive teens can be.

---------------------------------------------------------------
I do think Kate should be publicly tweeting support for Bindi. Life isn't about quid pro quo. By doing nothing more than giving a shout-out to Bindi each week she would be informing her twitter followers about an interesting TV show they may not have previously watched and encourage them to vote for Bindi to help get her to the finals. It would take less than a minute per week and she would be helping a friend.

I wonder if Kate thinks because the Irwins haven't tweeted about her specials the last two years that they aren't worth her tweeting about DWTS. Of course the Irwins probably don't even know about Kate's specials since they live in Australia and I don't think K+8 airs down under until well after it airs here in the U.S.

That was a great article. It was just what I was thinking. The Katdashians shut down their feeds (oh, there hooror) out of respect for Lamar. That lasted about two days. Once he regained consciousness, he's fair game.

I would like someone to ask Khloe to her face if she is going to continue to "feature" Lamar on her show, and continue to re-air episodes that "feature" him. TMZ? Anyone?

If she really wants to respect Lamar, she should let him go without a peep. And I hope this is a real wake-up call for Scott and he gets the hell out of Dodge as well.

And my advice to Rob... living well is the best revenge.

“The Kardashians started filming B-roll outside instead, and the hospital made them stop that as well,” the insider continues. “They just didn’t get it.”

“The hospital didn’t trust any of them not to film on the sly,” the source explains.

I really did love the dances that got perfect scores.

MikeB said...

Loved DWTS last night. From what I could hear the pros saying it sounded like they were assigned their dances. Maybe they got to pick from a list, but some of the dances just didn't make for a good translation to the dance types the pros had to choreograph for. I felt particularly bad for Alexa's assignment.

Seeing Bindi and Derek doing the Dirty Dancing routine made my respect for Patrick Swayze go up even more. I know, I know; movie vs. live TV, but Derek's arms were positively trembling while Patrick was rock solid with Jennifer Grey. That was a tremendous risk.

Congrats to everyone. I don't think there was a single bad performance last night.

That's just classic Milo. Like I said, she is the type of friend where if you have a booger in your nose, Milo isn't going to just quietly touch her own nose or hand you a tissue. She's going to instead say "hey, you, yeah you. Yeah, ya got something right there. No, the other nostril. Higher, a little to the left. Oh here just let me get it for you!"

What I find so perplexing about Milo is that nobody seems to know who she really is. If they do, they're not saying. Both the fans and non-fans apparently know each other by name, and the non-fans have called the die-hard sheeple their real names, know where they live, etc., and yet, Milo remains elusive. Why is that? Is she that clever when it comes to staying anonymous, even though she is the Head Sheep?

Tucker's Mom -- Check it out! We read it in a college lit class. It is wonderful, one of my favorite stories ever. It is set in the 1930s. The young boy is Buddy (Capote) who lives with a relative whom he calls Aunt Sook. He is the narrator and describes life in the country during hard times, his relationship with Aunt Sook, who is somewhat child-like, but such a free-spirit who teaches Buddy the value of giving. Since it is autobiographical, it gives you a good look at Capote's life as a young boy.

But beware...it will tug at your heart-strings!

I thought she came up with less inappropriate remarks and questions than Erin usually does; Erin sometimes fixates on the love life of the contestants when they obviously want to keep it private. Either of them can be annoying, but at least they're not just plastic dress-forms like Brooke was. By far the best female dance-contest-show host is Cat Deeley on So You Think You Can Dance.

I really enjoyed DWTS last night. The "Good Morning" number from "Singing in the Rain" was my favorite. Probably because Allison didn't just copy the original dance, but added new choreography to it. Derek and Bindi did well and the Saturday Night Fever dance by Nick Carter was terrific. I think he should have gotten a perfect score, also. Don't know what Carrie Ann's problem with it was.

I like Leah Remini has co-host. For some reason, Erin Andrews just bothers me at times.

BTW, speaking of Leah, thought I'd mention that she has a book coming out on Nov. 3, about her experiences with Scientology. It's called "Troublemaker:Surviving Hollywood and Scientology". I might just give it a try.

In this neck of the woods, turnips are cooked, mashed with brown butter and spread on bread. Add a side of cabbage and you have a meal. As a kid, I tried to hard to like them but never did. I still don't. I eat scrapple, beef tongue sandwiches, tripe and chow-chow, dandelion (dug in the meadow) with hot bacon dressing, but turnips, no way. I remember when I would come home from school and ask what's for supper and if I was told "turnips," I'd ask if I could eat at Debbie's house (my best friend). They had an Amish maid/cook who always made the best-ever suppers for us and the meals never included turnips. Not even roasting them would make them palatable!

My mother cooked in the most bland way possible. Flavors were never disguised, um, enhanced, er, improved with any kind of herb or spice. We ate food that was baked or boiled. Vegetables were boiled, period.
A tiny pat of margarine was acceptable, and you salted your own plate.

Boiled vegetables are not always delicious. Boiled Brussels sprouts never are. I can speak to that issue from first hand experience. I learned to hate strongly flavored vegetables as a baby. I still do. They still gag me. The sense of smell has a definite memory, and the odor of vegetables cooking still triggers a negative response in me. I know roasting them would make no difference. They still smell bad and taste more than unpleasant to me.

6 hours per day is insane. I did 5 hours per day, 3 times a week for years and now I am down to 4 hours, 3 times a week. And every once in a while I have to do an extra day. I was the only one in the practice area doing 5. I wouldn't wish this on anybody.

I think the story itself is facinating and tragic. Of course all murders are tragic. But you're right the criminals had some bad information there was a safe with a lot of money in the house. Turns out the family, although well off, didn't keep a lot of petty cash in the house. What chills me every time is how long the murders took. They went around and around figuring out what to do for several hours. Then, they murdered the family one at a time, which is just horrific since other family members could surely hear loved ones being killed. It's also chilling in that there were farm hands living on the property who were awake with their baby who might have noticed something and helped out. Also a church friend's young daughter discovered them when the family didn't show up somewhere, I think church. Poor thing.

Yes, I'm a big true crime fan along with many other sick people here. :)
