Serial: The best reality TV show... er, podcast, of the year

Reality has its place, and the genre is never better served than the true crime podcast by This American Life out of Chicago, which just wrapped up today. You can listen for free on your smartphone's free podcast app (just search for "Serial" and download the episodes), or listen for free online.

Did Adnan kill Hae? You decide over the course of 12 engrossing episodes.

Some questions to ponder:
  • How much can you remember about what you did six weeks ago, on November 6, 2014?
  • Is Adnan a smooth talking sociopath who has charmed narrator Sarah Koenig or is he actually who he says?
  • What about that phone call to Adnan's then girlfriend the day of the murder?
  • Was the investigation botched?
  • If Adnan didn't kill Hae, who did?

Adnan -- some things make sense, other things make no sense. Nothing adds up cleanly.

My confusion swirls around the fact that Jay knew where Hae's car was abandoned. Sarah Koenig's voice was addictive and I was absorbed into her matrix of uncertainty.

I began listening while folding laundry and/or accomplishing other domestic tasks. Before I realized it, I was curled with my little MinPin, Annie, and just focused on listening.

Thank you again for the recommendation from Admin and friends here. You ladies have expanded my life in unexpected directions.

Yes Tucker agree. All my attorney friends are listening to this and we were saying Adnan is too smooth, too "who me??? He has an answer for everything even if it's gosh I just can't remeber! I don't buy it. But that's not the reason I think he did it.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Dmasy yes Jay knew where the car was. So in my view that means either jay or Adnan did it or both. And jay makes a heck of a lot less sense Adnan.

Mojave said...

When I took the Spock approach of pure logic, I was happiest. If Adnan did not do it, he had an astonishing amount of bad luck on the day that Hae disappeared. I am satisfied with Adnan being behind bars; I do not feel a terrible miscarriage of justice occurred.

I do really hope for useable DNA evidence, though. Proof makes things so much nicer!

His story matches up with the cell towers and the call to Adnan's ex most likely was made by Adnan. Those two things are hard to explain away and Adnan's explanation is I don't know. I think Adnan did it.
---------------------------
I agree, I think he did it, too. At the same time, I think he shouldn't have been convicted with the flimsy evidence the prosecution had. His lawyer was horrible, even I recognized things she should have brought up or questioned and I have no law experience whatsoever. It bothered me that one juror freely admitted that Adnan's choice to not testify was "huge", when the judge specifically instructed this should have no bearing. There were just too many unanswered questions for any jury to not have doubts.

Did she ever tweet that each of them was going to open a gift? I haven't read all her tweets, but the only one I remember was this one:

Kate Gosselin @Kateplusmy8
Decided this yr 2 open r family gifts, 1 daily til Christmas bc they r items we can use2entertain/distract:) Lex:Like Hanukkah? Me:Oh yeah!

No mention was made of each child opening a gift, which would have been 48 gifts...only a "family gift."
--------------------
I initially interpreted "a family gift" as being from one family member to another, but now I think you're right, it is a gift for "the family" (i.e., the kids).

That never occurred to me, since it isn't something we would do except in very rare circumstances. Certainly not with a game. I do include a group gift in my annual box for my son's family, but it is something divisible and consumable, like cookies. For my own kids, I bought a small package of each one's favorite cookies or candy for his/her stocking.

If K gives a video game to "the family" does that mean the golden child/children get first crack at it, with the others getting it after they lose interest? Would the same game interest all 8 children?

Buying group gifts for her own children just reinforces my picture of K - doesn't know her own children well, treats them as a pack, favors some over others. Oh, well.

getofftwitter said...

I see Kate BRAGGING about their family gift. Yeah, Kate, thought you were patching & piecing your finances? Doesn't sound like your in dire straights or any kind of financial woe, you sound like an entitled rich bitch. You are not no where near poor. And for her sheeple fans Kate put it out there, if she does not like being criticzed shut up and don't post on twitter. Twitter is a social media.

Blowing In The Wind said...

Blowing - I wasn't saying in my post above that they were opening individual gifts daily. I guess I could have worded it better but what I meant to say was they get enough family gifts that they can open one of them daily. I guess the piles of individual gifts that it takes her so long to wrap (not rap) will be opened when they get home from Jon's.

-------------

Yes, I understand. I wasn't questioning or criticizing your post. I meant that some here and on Twitter had assumed that each kid was opening a gift six days before Christmas, which would have been 48 presents...an ungodly amount. If it's one "family" gift per day, that's nearly not so bad, but it would be nice if she could teach them patience until the actual day. I don't get what this "distraction" was all about, though. Did she mean that she wants to get them out of her hair/extensions?

That, and spoiling the anticipation of waiting to open gifts on Christmas morning, when they will be with Jon.
I'm sure they'll still be excited, but it was a shit move and without any basis in reality.
She's been broadcasting their game playing for a long time. They've got plenty of games.

Even from TFW's own comments which we can read between the lines of, that house sounds horrible to live in! Constant shrieking, arguing, pinching and spitting, no one to go to for a cuddle or kind word. Kids whining about being bored, siblings competing for use of 'family' items, being ganged up against, scolded for trivial things, same old farce of holidays, paper plates!!

I finished episode 10, it was one of the best ones.

I think Cristina meant well and tried hard, and I fully believe that she really felt for Adnan, and was crushed to lose. I know attorneys who are like her. Scrappy, loud, even obnoxious at times. Long winded. Dramatic on the record. Not afraid to call opposing counsel an asshole in the middle of the courtroom, as she did. I call them forest through the trees attorneys, they get very caught up in little things and are much weaker at seeing and presenting the whole forest to the judge or jury.

I think her strategy, which is one many attorneys have employed, was to throw as much information out there as possible, even if it's confusing. Sometimes your goal IS to confuse the jurors, because when jurors are confused they tend to mistake that for reasonable doubt. Ultimately this failed, and a better course may have been to simply go through the prosecution's timeline systematically and cast doubt on it in a linear fashion. This case is SO dependent on timelines to cast doubt, Sarah really hit on that well.

The dirty little secret about attorneys is there is no secret. Anyone can think about this situation and poke holes in it, as Sarah has done. It's just a matter of paying for law school and being a good test taker who can study and pass your bar, and then having the practice and experience and know how to be able to present your reasonable doubt in court. But as far as thinking about this case, we're all more or less thinking about it from the same perspective.

Ultimately I have not found attorneys who employ Christina's style to be very effective. You end up losing credibility because you're always in a tizzy (if someone is always worked up how do you know if they're serious or not?), and it is not effective to grate on people's nerves all day long every day. On the flip side, a dramatic scrappy attorney like Christina "looks" effective to others because they've seen it on TV, etc. When selecting an attorney you really have to be careful that a showboating attorney is actually EFFECTIVE too. It does you know good to have an attorney who LOOKS good out there and seems aggressive, but is not being effective. Quieter more reserved attorneys can be just as effective in their own way.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

The video game present seems ripe for conflict. It's just one present, so you can't go play with other presents while you wait your turn. Not all kids can usually play most games at once. At most wii usually allows four and most games are two or even one player. More fighting, spitting, hitting.

I have a question, when they've opened a good portion of their gifts by Christmas, doesn't Kate think about them getting bored right after Christmas because they've already played with everything? Video games only have a shelf life of a few weeks before you get bored or beat it. What's the point whether you are bored now or bored later? I don't understand it.

I feel bad for them that she is taking the fun and anticipation of Christmas out from under them. They don't even know it at this age.

Restaurant Impossible had an episode about a camp for ill children in the Adirondacks. This is how you really get to know and understand a charity you are aligning yourself with. Robert basically became a camper, eating with them, doing activities with them, getting to know a few of the kids really closely and talking to their parents. He also talked to lots of the staff, asking great questions and getting to know them and why they work here too. And he even reached out to one of his friends to come out and help him cook. He also looked for needs outside of the kitchen, like discovering they really needed some new boats. Above and beyond what he was supposed to be doing there. Boats have nothing to do with fixing their kitchen. They did a great thing for them.

Oh and when one mother was talking about what this camp did for her son, who has had several brain tumors, she never once mentioned having some time off from him. Rather she talked about him and how when he came home he said Mom, I learned at camp that being normal is overrated. I about cried. This is how every celeb should get to know their charities.

Not to mention her assessment of this blog -- a "cesspool of hate."
That said, I get a kick out of her putting so much effort towards defending TFW again and again and again. All this time and
energy going out to support someone who wouldn't spit on her
if she was on fire.

Why should it be an emotional attachment? If you have a very fussy baby, either colicky, or teething, and absolutely nothing will calm him down (not even car rides or vacuum cleaners!), but he is content and immediately stops crying when listening to a music video or cartoon video with music, or watching movement on a video screen, I seriously doubt that this is going to have a long-term harmful effect on the child.

Of course, I might be shelling out a lot of money for Billy Joel tickets in the future! :)

Goodness, it's one thing to point out someone's hypocrisy or lack of hypocrisy when it comes to them and their stated religion. Quite another to claim you know what's really in their heart about it. Only we as individuals knows that.

I don't believe Kate cares one bit about religion. Most narcissist don't, there really is no use for it when you're a narcissist. But I can't claim to know exactly what's in her heart when it comes to Jesus. I have no idea and neither does Milo.

Lol.

There is this school of thought among some attorneys that if you are an obnoxious showboating aggressive jerk, that's a good attorney.

I'm of the school of thought that sometimes less is more and a good attorney knows when to shut up. The problem is that doesn't always please the client because they don't understand the strategy behind that. They may say why aren't you doing something! When they don't understand by picking battles and being strategic in what you attack and what you let go, being strategic in who you piss off and who you play nicey nice to, you ARE doing something. It's just not as exciting as Christina's tactics!

However I don't have to do jury trials, I'm playing to one judge. So I know exactly what buttons to push and not push to get what I want, when to get aggressive and when to scale it back. Here's a common example, when things are going your way, SHUT UP. You don't want to talk the judge/jury out of things going your way!

But a bench trial is a different thing than a jury trial which is so unpredictable. Some jurors might want to see a show. Others like you Dmasy would be driven crazy by that! It's hard to know what a jury wants from you.

Once earlier this year when I caught someone, a professional, in a huge lie on the witness stand and they still stuck to the lie even though I put the document right in front of them and it said otherwise. It was epic. The smoking gun adrenaline feeling, your heart pumping cause you hit on something big, is really cool. But I just sort of got on with it kept asking questions, I cannot imagine screeching and screaming like Christina did when she found out the prosecutor recruited Jay's lawyer.

I'd be laughed out of the courtroom. Probably hauled away in a straight jacket. I just cannot even imagine it.

Rainbows and unicorns, actually the statement by American Academy of Pediatrics states that watching moving images can be harmful, something about the video screen is two dimensional and life is three dimensional, and a young Childs ability to connect what they see on a screen with how things behave in real life. Also, young children may tune out real life while watching a video. The brain is still growing and that is why AAP recommends against it.
The whole statement can be found at pediatrics.aappublications.org and search for media and infants
The emotional attachment comment was in response to earlier copy of a tweet that said a twelve week old ”loved” the Gosselin children.

My kids are excited too. I'm sure if I said, go ahead, open a gift everyday until Christmas, they would (mind you, they would run out of gifts before the day actually came LOL!). It's about the experience of the holiday, and getting them to understand that. We have some activities planned, but are keeping things pretty low key this year - family mainly.

You can make things special for them by doing things a little out of the ordinary. For example, my boys get to spend a couple hours at work with my husband tomorrow while I'm at the dentist. They are beyond excited. The next day, I am taking them out for breakfast before our haircut appointments. These are things that we don't normally do, but make the day a little special for them.

And Kate - I am as lucky as you are. I get to stay home with my kids. Do they annoy me sometimes? For sure. But this time of year is all about them, and the experience of it, not the gifts. In 5 years or even 10 years, they're not going to remember or care about the multitude of gifts. That I know for sure.

When I read Kate's journal, I was struck how she would pray to God for things. She has distorted God into her Aladdin granting her wishes. Now that she is financially secure, do you ever see her giving back (other than for publicity or TLC?). No, because she is playing a role but deep down all that matters is what's in it for her. I am afraid some of the children have learned this and will be morally bankrupt too, thus Jon's concern.

This Milo person is a crazed fan or is paid to defend Kate despite the years of evidence what we know is true. Milo was born out of Kate's need to have a defender verbally assaulting any critics and haters so Kate looks like a victim. We know better: not a victim, a master manipulator.

This broadcasting about the kids getting their gifts early takes the cake as to how self-centered she, and frankly, the kids are.

I would have some idea that she has faith in her heart, and some

gifts, wrapping paper, baking, lather, rinse, repeat. So for Gladys
to spend all her energy telling us something different, makes her
(in my opinion) look like a lovesick idiot. And let's not blame it
on TFW wanting privacy -- the woman has her son's constipation documented on film, so that (not-a-cruise) ship has sailed long ago.

I think Kate sequesters herself between the kitchen and her bedroom, and wants nothing to do with entertaining the kids.
What makes this break any different than spring break, when Kate said she had to schedule group activities and actively did it and participated with them (too much, imo)?
The cameras, of course.
If my kids begged me to open a present before Christmas, fine, but pick out a (not low value, long forgotten) toy that you want to donate, and here 'ya go, kid. Have fun.
And don't dare pout when you don't have a pile of gifts on Christmas day.

And that's where it ties in to when Jon said something about, would kids eat icecream for every meal sure, but we as PARENTS need to be a parent when it comes to that.

I have no doubt most kids in America, if asked if they want to open presents early, would do so.

But it is up to you as a parent to step in and so no, those presents are for a special and important holiday called Christmas. Everyone is waiting for Christmas, and you will too. You're not special, you don't get to open up your gifts before all the other boys and girls in the world, and you won't die of boredom, I promise.

Further evidence as well Kate has no family or friends, or very little. Most parents, their first thought about gifts is oh no no no we can't open that early, Grandma has to see you open that.

If TFW had said one word about the "reason for the season," then
I would have some idea that she has faith in her heart, and some
connection to her religion.

My cousins (6 kids) used to spend the month before Christmas (Advent) doing good deeds/chores for which they would earn hay to add to Jesus's manger, so that by Christmas Day, Jesus would have a warm, comfortable place to be born.

I agree. Right now TFW is trying to pay the kids back for all of the filming she coerced them into doing, by giving them gifts in advance. I remember her kids knew there was no Santa Claus,(and reportedly told other kids at school) as she wanted full credit for gifts purchased, as opposed to Santa Claus. Narcissist much?
TFW has no idea how to inspire her kids regarding the spirit of the season, and for all her "religious values" does not understand that this time of year is about gratitude, thankfulness, and being kind to others. Not about what YOU get. She clearly has raised her kids to expect gifts, and there is no give back/or being good people to inspire the kids that this season is good will towards other people. (without filming!!)

She has lost her way, if she ever had it in the first place.

TFW will surely mention religion now that she's been called out on it. Wait for it.

My husband and I were just talking about how Christmas isn't fun when there aren't any kids around. It was the enjoyment of watching their anticipation of Christmas morning. Our rule was "no gifts until every is up" and half the fun was watching them try to wake up dad who was just soooooo tired he couldn't get out of bed. I miss those days.

I rarely post, since you wonderful ladies express the crazy that is Kate far better than I. My cousin has 5 children, all born within 1-2 years of each other. Every year, she would take each child out on a Friday evening so they could buy Christmas presents for their brothers & sisters. They would go to dinner first, & spend quality time alone with Mom. The gifts they bought were inexpensive- a new ruler, a box of crayons, batteries, etc. The kids are grown now, and continue this with their kids. Now, my cousin only had 5 kids , not the magic 8!, but she also worked full time as a high school teacher. Kate- this is how you do "traditions" and keep kids from needing distractions. It really is sad how she is raising those children.

Auto correct strikes again! In 264 comment, dh and I AGREE that the original film of Sound of Music is so very much better than the live performance last year.
And talking about live performance, with Peter Pan, I was disappointed with Christopher Walken, I just expected... More. Not just more cowbell! Michael Park who was a soap star in As The World Turns, was one of the pirates and he could have done so much better in the captain Hook role. I saw him on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, he is so talented.

I am sure there are many local families in need where Kate lives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Watching Extreme Couponing on TLC. There was a lady who was teaching her how to EC. The trainee figured up that she would only have to pay 40 dollars for 600 dollars worth of food. 600 worth of food, used store card, then coupons and the final total was 120 dollars.
She was upset because she only wanted to pay 40 dollars, because her teacher only paid 16 dollars for 1000 to 1300 dollars worth. I can't believe she was like that, it was only 80 dollars off, even though she saved 87% on her total bill.
Now they are showing a woman who is an EC and she got a lot of free food and it made her gain a lot of weight, about 250 pounds. So, she decided to get a trainer and buy healthier. The trainer went to her pantry and grabbed a 55 gal. trash bag and started throwing boxed food into the bags. He told her, WE ARE donating this to the food pantry!
One lady had enough packages of razors, the nice Gillette ones, but her husband is bald. She said he could shave his head 2 times a day for 3 years. Why not donate them to the local HS football team in a small gift bag, along with all the men's deodorant sticks and body wash you had?
I couldn't contribute monetarily much when I was going, but I volunteered to pack all the items in the 80 gift bags and I am very organized and I had it done in about less than an hour. There was a lot of stuff to do. Open the products, all the plastic and paper and cardboard was maddening! Had them all lined up on the big table and all the plastic, paper, cardboard separated for recycling. They at the church were amazed that I came in and did that all by myself. I really enjoyed doing it. I wish I could do more.
All done while I was barely able to walk, had to use a cane to walk. You would think after that Broken Foot would of gotten healed, she could of at least walked in the animal shelter and find out how she could help. UGG gate is and was despicable.
Please, believe me, I am not bragging, but just stunned that TFW does NOTHING EVER to help anyone but herself. Selfish, spiteful, narcissistic sick soul, she is, I tell you.
I thought that EC was getting harder to do because stores are catching on to the tricks, stacking and hoarding.
It sickens me to see these EC'ers wipe out supplies of products so they can hoard them in their homes, as if a family of 4 needs 20 tubes of toothpaste.
It seems that many of these EC'ers are suffering from OCD and are hoarding in a pathological sense.
Stocking up and saving is one thing, but hoarding food and goods, and expecting to pay mere pennies on the dollar is unhealthy at best, and parasitic at worst.
Congrats for walking out of the store for pennies. Now who do you think is going to pay for the products that the store lost money on?
Me, that's who.
Yes and I didn't mind that the twins said that. The twins seem well aware they manipulate her, they have her over a barrel. And they take advantage. They want what they want like any kid does and they know how to get it. The difference is their path to getting what they want is unhealthy, but that's not their fault nor are they old enough and mature enough to not take that path because it's not "good" for them. Which is why we have PARENTS.
******
I can't fault the twins for manipulating their situation to their advantage. After all, they've watched the master at work all their lives, manipulating people. They are only mirroring Kate's own behavior. They learned after their six younger siblings were born, that they were shunted to the back row and that the younger children were the "stars." I'm sure this was upsetting to both of them, but viewers saw Mady express her frustration with the situation time and again.
Karma comes in many forms. Perhaps this is one version of karma coming around to Kate.
Ultimately I have not found attorneys who employ Christina's style to be very effective. You end up losing credibility because you're always in a tizzy (if someone is always worked up how do you know if they're serious or not?), and it is not effective to grate on people's nerves all day long every day. On the flip side, a dramatic scrappy attorney like Christina "looks" effective to others because they've seen it on TV, etc. When selecting an attorney you really have to be careful that a showboating attorney is actually EFFECTIVE too. It does you know good to have an attorney who LOOKS good out there and seems aggressive, but is not being effective. Quieter more reserved attorneys can be just as effective in their own way.
*****
I don't work in criminal defense but I do believe that having an attorney who appears calm, reasoned, logical and professional does make a positive impact on the jury. It doesn't hurt your case if the jury finds you likeable or if not likeable, at least very competent and professional.
Every town usually has at least one criminal attorney who is considered "the best." My city has grown over the years, but there is still one criminal defense attorney who is the one you call if you can afford him. He knows his stuff and knows how to put on the very best and most effective defense for his clients, often causing lots of angry public comment when the jury verdict is reported on in the local paper.
The D.A.'s office isn't particularly fond of him, nor are some of the police officers who are involved in the early stages of some of his cases. He's the modern day Perry Mason I guess.
But if you don't have the money for his retainer, you'll have to take your chances with a lesser experienced attorney.
I'm going to start on Serial right now, as I have the office to myself this week.
And an AAAAmen to that! That jkind gluttony really pisses me off! I hope HOPE that it's all for the show and that they (or most of them) donate the products to the needy in their communities. How could a family, any family, go through the 'ahem, "food" items (all that stuff that comes in a box or can?) before the expiration date? All that frozen crap? Freezer burn, no?
Will the coupons cease to exist? Can you not wait until the next deal??
And if the stores can support a lone crazed couponer clearing out entire shelves and aisles, why don't they just DONATE the items in the first place?
getofftwitter said...
Tuckers mom: I totally agree with you on those crazy EC. people who hoard products, and get the stuff even if they don't use it, like the crazies who don't have a dog or a cat, and don't use that brand, but they hoard it just the same, for bragging and show & tell. I guess nobody ever explained to these people that products, especially food & non-food product, have a expiration dates on them. Stuff like bleach, toothpaste etc loses it cleaning power, if it sits too long or turns into something else. These people stock up on stuff that will expire long before they get to it.
I can really see a animal shelter, homeless shelter, womens shelter, or even a church, using the extreme couponing method, but some of these people need mental help. Buy stuff cause it's free, even if you don't have a pet, just for show & tell? They are NUTS! and it's a waste!
Kate needs to read stories like this one from her old neighborhood before she tweets about opening all of those family gifts to keep the kids entertained:
"If you haven't quite caught that spirit of Christmas yet, this just may be the story you need.
Matthew Powers was one of those regular, ordinary fellows, someone who could be your next-door neighbor. The 43-year-old Elizabethtown man with a 6-year-old daughter was self-employed as a metal fabricator. Powers always loved mechanical things - cars, engines, metal pieces that work together. He even invented an after-market product for stunt motorcyles that protects part of the engine from dust and dirt.
But one night everything he thought he knew about his life changed. And in his darkest moment, all the doubts he had about his fellow man turned out not to be true, either.
On Sept. 13, 2013, Powers went for a ride with a friend of his. A friend who was driving the car, reportedly, too fast. The vehicle went out of control.
The crash was horrific and Powers was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, broken vertebrae and brain damage doctors say could last decades.
He had no insurance and he couldn't work. Powers' ex-wife moved to another county with their child, making it a two-hour round trip to see his daughter, Madison.
For the past year, Powers has been scraping together rent money and gas for his car to spend time with his daughter. His savings are gone.
"Sunday was bad," said Powers in his now faltering speech. "I realized there was no presents under the tree for Maddie."
He really needed help but he was not the kind of man that asks.
His mother Sue Bowles of Mount Joy was distraught about her son and his turn of fate. She and her husband had only $30 to spare themselves.
"One day he's working and totally self-sufficient. The next he's a wreck on food stamps."
She went about setting a miracle in motion.
She wrote a letter to the editors of LNP about her desperation, and it appeared Monday.
No sooner had the letter been posted online, than generous Lancastrians reached out to help.
A brand new bike for Maddie from an anonymous donor in West Chester.
A $500 check from realtor Dawn Brill Cooper, who said: "I just wanted to bless a family this Christmas."
The story really hit Robert Vickers, 62 and his wife Sharon. "I get paid Wednesday. We'll go out and do some shopping for the (Powers) family. "
"Christmas is everyday," said 72-year-old Bryce Church, a trucker from Lititz. "If people don't know that, then they're blind."
Church said: "Maybe the guy could use a hair cut or some shoes. God knows I have more leather jackets than I need. It's just something I try to do. Give. It doesn't always have to be a monetary thing, it can be as much as a kind word and a smile."
Monday, Powers' mother told him people had responded and he was overwhelmed to tears.
"The kindness of people. I didn't think it existed any more. There's way too much evil in the world," Powers said. "Now my faith in humanity is back after everything I've been through."
He added that he didn't want anything for himself.
"My present would be the smile on my little girl's face."
The reality TV saga of Sons of Guns continues. Will Hayden was indicted on multiple charges of molesting underage relatives including his daughter.
I saw a statement by Joe Meaux, the actual owner of the company featured on the show. He said he and Will began to have disagreements over the direction of the show. Joe wanted a more reality based show about gun manufacturing while Will was increasingly going for the drama and controversy. Will was manipulating people and situations to try to assert his control over the show regardless of what the other participants wanted.
Joe summed it up with the statement that Will had two personalities. The on-screen persona was completely different from the off-screen reality and that lead to the conflicts. That sounds a lot like TFW and the disintegration of her marriage over her refusal to quit filming. She presents herself as "can-do-Kate" scrimping and scraping by to keep her family fed. In reality she is a narcissistic manipulator who is forcing her kids to keep filming so she can have hair extensions, trips to NYC, Botox, a private body guard, and the other things she thinks she deserves as a celebrity.
I think this serves as an example of why the sheeple should be very careful in providing their unquestioned support for TFW. They only know what they have seen on TV. It is entertainment to them, but the kids' reality is likely very much different.
Someone asked upthread about the animal shelter donation. I think
My vote for one of her top 10 douchey moments was when she said "I got those little girls cell phones and iPads so that I could take them away. Yes indeedy. And I've learned I'm not the only parent of teens who has discovered that little gem. Find their currency and that is that." I personally don't know anyone who has bought something for their kid specifically so that it could be taken away. BTW, I had to look up the quote because I couldn't remember it and everyone who wrote about it thought she was an ass hat.
When bleach sits for a long time over 6 months, it 1. the bleach smell is weak, 2. it's cleaning power is weak, the chemical has broken down. Most chemicals break down, in time, just like OTC drugs people take, or the ones you get from the Doctor, they have a certain shelf life. They do go bad. I read this a long time ago, that the chemicals break down , some become weaken chemical(like adding water to it) others become another chemical, that is why some people get sick, burned, or the chemical does not work. Like bleach is suppose to kill germs, if it sits too ling, it become in effective, even the smell is hardly there. A half a cup of brand new bleach would stink up your whole house in about an hour, when it sits too long you have to use more, to even get the full strength of it.
So these hoarders of products & food are fooling themselves. Even stores get rid of old merchandise, some stores mark the stuff down, other products have a certain code, when that code is reached (code = date) the store either puts it on quick sale or have clearance shelf to get rid of the last of the code. Or send it back to the company.
I have picked up a lot of food products, because of end of code. Some have almost the same shelf life as the newer product. Stores go by a code, which is nothing more than a date, to sell the product by, while the product is still good/effective.
So if you know that your family will use the products you buy in a certain time, like before or around when it expires, and they use a lot of the stuff, then by all means stock up.
One thing of note...they introduced the realtor by his name, Bruce, not Mr. Realtor Man. And the swim instructor was Jarrod, not Mr. Swim Instructor.
The nanny even had a name, although I don't remember it.
Everyone had a name, and was within camera range. Not scattering like cockroaches lest it be shown that she has help and isn't doing it all alone. *sob*
The fact that TFW has many young, very young fans, indicates that her "fans" have no idea how inappropriate she is as a mother and a person. So I can't take their comments seriously about a almost 40 year old mom, who puts herself above her own kids, in HER need to film the kids. Not going well, and not going to end well at all.
Adnan -- some things make sense, other things make no sense. Nothing adds up cleanly.
My confusion swirls around the fact that Jay knew where Hae's car was abandoned. Sarah Koenig's voice was addictive and I was absorbed into her matrix of uncertainty.
*******
I am only halfway through the podcasts, but one thing that stood out to me as a red flag is the fact that Adnan did not even try to page or call Hae after he received the initial telephone call from the police asking if he knew where she was. At that point, she had not picked up her cousin and the police considered her "missing," but possibly just off with her boyfriend.
Other friends tried to reach her multiple times after hearing from the police, but Adnan says he didn't try to contact her because he was around these other friends, seeing them at school, and hearing from them that she had not responded. That, to me, does not make sense. According to most people, including Adnan, he and Hae were on good terms and still close. He called to give her his new cell number just the day before. His ex-girlfriend, someone he loved and still saw and spoke to every day, is being searched for by police, yet he doesn't even place one single call to her phone? To me, that does not make sense, unless he knew there was no point trying to reach her.
But I'll continue listening to the remainder of the podcasts before I try to reach a final assessment.
Thank you to Admin and this blog for bringing this program to my attention. Sarah Koenig did an amazing job narrating her journey as she tried to piece together this tragedy, and I hope that she will do something similar again soon.
I agree, I think that was a fatal mistake in a perfect murder.
Even if his friends were calling, I think he would have thought, well maybe he's not picking up her call but she'll pick up mine I know it.
On the other hand, Adnan did do some things I find normal for a friend of the deceased, like refusing to believe she was really gone, and taking to a photo of someone who really looked like her. However he is smart and could have read up about grief and how people react. We all did a lot of that when my friend's older sister died at age 16. It was like you think well she'll be in school tomorrow, we'll have a good laugh and this will all just go away. That's why I say he was too smooth and had an answer for everything. I think the things he did right are explained by the fact that he is a very smart young man.
****
I watched the three most recent episodes of The Little Couple and have to say I'm sorry to see the direction the show it taking. First, the two children are very adorable, which is why I watch. I shouldn't get sucked in, but yet I do.
But the extravagance is too much for me. In one episode, Jen and Chloe go to the beach in Galveston. It looks like it might be a private beach, as they appear to drive in through an entrance that leads to some beach homes. Then a guy approaches Jen to tell her one of the homes is coming on the market (totally spontaneous of course - ha). The house itself is huge, 3 stories and fully furnished. Jen talks about how great it would be to have a beach "getaway." They have a custom home already which must have cost quite a bit. Now she's talking about buying a 3-story beach house for week-end getaways? That's rich people talk, and I can't relate.
In possibly the same episode, Bill introduces the audience to the newest addition to the family - this large SUV. Again, this vehicle must have cost a lot of money. This brings their vehicle total up to at least three, all new, all expensive.
In yet another segment, we are shown the motorized vehicles they have bought for each child. Seriously, a pink motorized vehicle for your two-year old little person daughter? It's just too much, too soon. These kids are well on their way to being completely spoiled. I wonder if these vehicles were TLC's idea, so that they could have something "interesting" to film. I would have thought Jen would be more cautious about the whole idea. So either she and Bill had to follow TLC's desires because they are under contract, or she and Bill are completely over-indulging their children. Neither one is good.
I'm waiting for TLC to send the family on an extravagant trip, as that seems to be the "go to" next step. (Of course, TLC probably footed the bill for each overseas trip to adopt first Will and then Chloe.) Now they are airing commercials for the over-the-top birthday party planned for Chloe.
I'm glad this couple are happily married. I'm glad they were able to adopt two children and are blissfully happy. But I'm not interested in watching their conspicuous consumption and lavish lifestyle. I hope I'm not jealous, but the truth is, I will never have that type of money and it's easier to be content with my simpler lifestyle when I'm not watching others spend money like water.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That's how I feel. I don't like to see it. The kids are cute and obviously would have known a much different life had they not been adopted. Jen and Bill seem like nice people, but they are materialistic. I think they are good parents, but might fall into the spoiling trap because they can.Being little people has not been easy for any of them, so I think maybe they are overcompensating.One scene I saw showed a child in the park looking at them suspiciously and asking Bill how old he was, not sure if he was indeed an adult. He also didn't seem interested in playing with Will. I think they are cushioning things for these kids, but too much emphasis has been placed on the 'stuff' they give them. I do think they are trying to be good parents and role models but are somewhat used to a certain lifestyle.The kids will not remember differently.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

I felt the same about the Little Couple. I've never really seen much of their parenting in action. They are well-intentioned, but very materialistic. Bill was only gone for a few days but got the kids great gifts. There are mountains of things to do in D.C. for free for children but instead they paid for a pirate ship so Will could have an elaborate pirate experience. There's not a lot of emphasis on saying please and thank you and waiting your turn. Both kids are very grabby, demanding and gimme-gimme, with little to no correction from the parents.

It must be hard to be a parent of a little person and feel empathy for the situation and all their disadvantages. I imagine you would just want to shower them with the material things and make sure they were constantly happy.

That's another thing I've noticed about both of them is they are loathe to let either child be unhappy for even one second. It's okay for a kid to whine and cry a bit, not like something, not cooperate. Just leave them be, they'll come around. They need to learn to process those emotions.

That said, those two kids are cute as a button and full of personality. They look like FUN kids to raise.

Yeah, I'm conflicted about The Little Couple. Bill and Jen seem like great people and have overcome so much. The children are lucky and seem happy. But TLC shows with children just leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Did Leeza Gibbons respond to TFW when she tried to get her
attention? Surely Leeza fell in love with her when they worked
together -- everyone who meets TFW does.

Since the G kids will be with their dad tomorrow night, TFW is
free to go to church without attracting unwanted attention.
Ordinarily, I'd say that's nobody's business, but since
Gladys absolutely insists that TFW's faith means the world
to her in ways we cannot possibly comprehend, it seems
like a no-brainer that she'd enjoy a quiet church service
while her children are otherwise engaged.

They did let the little girl fuss during her swimming lesson.

Some of the materialistic stuff is set up by TLC, imo, so that they have something to film...

I think about how boring my life would be if they were filming it. Production clearly has no imagination there. Just throw some money at it and we're good.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

It was boring even with the excess, but I do think there is the element of we have to "do" something with them for the cameras. Lounging around watching ipad movies, running errands and cooking dinner like normal families is surely thought to be very boring. But then when you're not doing "normal" things you would normally be doing, how is that "reality"?

I didn't see the swim one to see they let her fuss.

I was bored when Bill was getting his back checked out. Wow you have a slipped disc. So do thousands of people. Yawn. I was also bored through there very lonnnng christening segment. You got christened. Congrats. So did my neighbor's kid.

Maybe she really doesn't know that Hanukkah is not Christmas?
Hannah- Hanukkah?

She is ignorant. That's twice in two days she tweeted silly,maybe offensive, Hanukkah 'jokes.'

She is ignorant. 182.

Willful ignorance = stupidity. She is stupid.
That makes her comments even more offensive.

Her Camp Barnabas comment REALLY pissed me off. Her Hanukkah comments are equally stupid and offensive. She hasn't been very respectful of the Amish either. Never mind lying to Christians.
I could go on but I'd be "preaching to the converted."

Now they are airing commercials for the over-the-top birthday party planned for Chloe. 165

This is probably tlc's idea but I really wish Jen and Bill would say "enough" and raise their kids away from the camera.

Exactly. It's time. I don't buy this whole we need to educate the public about little people. How much more education can there possibly be? I get it, little people are just like you and me they just do things a little differently. I never thought otherwise. Those who are cruel to little people are unlikely to change no matter how many episodes TLC makes.

And, I don't think it's right to exploit children in the name of education. Educate somehow else.

The bored housewives comment was so spot on. This was always just bored housewife T.V. There is nothing of value here. And a lot of children have been exploited because of it.

I think the Little Couple may over compensate because both of their kids spent their early, formative years in orphanages. I don't watch the show but that's the impression that I've gotten from them and I could be wrong.

I also have a Festivus grievance. My 30 year old alarm clock bit the dust. In the past 10 days I have purchased 3 (three) alarm clocks. Everyone of them has been defective in a different way. I don't want anything fancy. An alarm clock with a snooze button and a battery backup. Is that too much to wish for? I'll even buy it!

It's amusing watching Barb and Milo dueling for Kate's attention. Barb pulls out the "I have the flu" for sympathy, then resorts to the old baby animal trick. Milo comes back with her own cute animal pictures. It's like a couple of kids trying to get noticed.

Sheeple really are entertaining.

Every Christmas I get so sad, about those who have nothing, not a home, not a lot of great food, not any family or friends. I actually cry, because though I am far from rich, I still have been blessed with so much. This year I decided to bring myself a lot of joy, and perhaps make someone smile, and bring a little joy to their life. I went to the Bank, got $100. worth of $5. bills, 20 in all. I bought 20 Christmas cards, taped a $5. bill in each of them. Then this is what I wrote in those 20 cards:
This is my Random Act of Kindness. It is not much, but use it if you want. But if you don't need it, then pay it forward, and pass it on to someone else. The Joy is in the Giving. Merry Christmas. Smile & pass it on.
I had such a blast walking up to someone, giving them a card, and saying Merry Christmas to them. Some were so shocked, to be getting a card with a happy Merry Christmas, from a stranger! One woman told me that I had just made her miserable day so happy. Imagine that, a little card with a hearty , turned this woman's day from bad to great! But it was me who got her own Christmas joy, the joy that I needed to have. Sharing in such a small way, brought me so much happiness. It made me wish I could afford to pass out 20 more!
Merry Christmas to all of you who comment and read on this fine blog, and to you, Admin.:)

LOL!! A friend of mine is going through the same thing. The alarm clocks are junk. None of them has worked. I told her to go to the store, write down the brands they are selling and look up the reviews on Amazon. She's still working on it.

I am still using the same alarm clock I had in my college dorm! They don't make them like that anymore! When I travel, I use my cell phone alarm. It's never failed -- at least not yet.

@Kateplusmy8 Thanks @TLC 4getting me behind on work because of #KatePlus8Marathon...& making me fall N LOVE w/this family all over again!

Again? Oh Gladys, Gladys, Gladys. When haven't you been in love with Kate? Why do birds suddenly appear?

So many teenies crying their eyes out over the marathon and specials. You just have to shake your head and hope that they outgrow this and not turn out like Kravitz.

I feel like Jen and Bill have bought into the 'who are we to say no' if TLC wants to lavish trips, toys, etc all over us. Too bad cuz they seem kinda nice otherwise.

Someone someone asked TFW whether or not the twins had instagram. TFW said no, they're fakers and she's even had some of them removed. Then She went on to say

@Kateplusmy8: @awesomeone352 for starters, my girls are horrified by the fakers poor grammar, punctuation and sentence structure .. Lol #priorities

LOL indeed since TFW is such a great example of perfect grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.

This is funny, coming from a person who says "Me and the girls went," "laying around," sediments, free reign, alot instead of a lot. I wonder what she thinks about the grammar and spelling mistakes that her sheeple tweet - "I seen," you're, your, their, there, they're, etc. etc. Is she horrified?

How do the girls know that there are mistakes in the fake instagrams if they don't have access to social media?

Please note that Bill & Jen's daughter is Zoey, not Chloe as has been mentioned here.

I'm enjoying all the conversations and the warm Southern California winter. I wish I had a verandah to share.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

The grammar horrifies them? I would think the fact that there are fake accounts of you in the first place would be what is horrifying. What mother would not be absolutely freaked out by such an outlandishly CREEPY thing?

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Lynn we may go kayaking tomorrow at one of the south facing beaches. Just to say we kayaked on Christmas Eve. We've had a real "winter" here but funny for Christmas Eve only the temperature is shooting up about 10 degrees!
