The Spirit of Giving

This is a time of year that is about love, family, friends and most of all giving. Discuss holiday plans, recipes, gifts (the tangible and intangible) and more here.

Meanwhile, just in time for the season, Netflix and Amazon.com have released for streaming a raw and intense documentary about giving, Craigslist Joe.

In December 2011, 29-year-old Joe Garner decided to see if he could live solely off the generosity of others all month long. He empties his wallet and takes to Craigslist. The dozens and dozens of heartwarming (and often funny!) encounters Joe has with people from Craigslist moves him, and viewers, to tears. In particular, he is once invited to stay with an Iraqi family in Seattle. They tell him about their experiences, good and bad, as immigrants in the U.S. And in New York, he meets an eccentric woman named Fran with cancer. Joe quickly realizes Fran has a severe hoarding problem. Without judgement, he spends a few hours at her place clearing one small area for her to sit, bringing joy and peace to Fran. Will Joe find a place to rest his head and food to eat every day? The answer may surprise you.

A Zach Galifianakis produced film (yes, that crazy guy from The Hangover!) Craigslist Joe is the ultimate 31-day grifting plan--and yet this grifting had a greater purpose. To see if most people really are generous, open, and good at heart. Perhaps the most moving moment of all is when Joe's mother talks about the experience. She says she wasn't going to worry about her son out there. She was confident her boy would find plenty of good people to help him. We were rooting throughout the film for Joe to prove his mom right. Thank you, Joe and Zach.

Stuffed shells, Brussels sprouts and homemade bread? THAT's her idea of a "company" dinner? Bleah! I like stuffed shells and I like Brussels sprouts, but not together
********
I often will pair greens with a pasta like shells or ravioli or canneloni because I feel like I need greens in every meal, especially with a pasta indulgence. However.... I would not serve something like sprouts (which DH and I LOVE) WITH pasta for company.
If I was doing Italian for company, I'd serve the pasta/rice as the Primo, then a protein (meat, fish) and a vegetable controno as the Secondo.
Buy hey, maybe they're really close friend and the dinner was very informal. I just can't believe this multi millionaire cons people into repairing her mansion for free.
Donate your services to a single mom who really can not afford a plumber or electrician etc. Kate does not need it.

I bake these every holiday because they are simple and fun to decorate.

Butter Cookies

1 cup butter (2 sticks)
¾ white sugar
1 egg
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
2 ½ cups flour

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla, blending well. Blend in flour. Chill dough for 45 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.Roll dough to ¼ in thickness and use cookie cutters to make cookies. Bake on ungreased cookie sheets for 5 to 7 minutes.

For royal icing I beat 1 egg white to soft peaks, then add 2 cups confectioner sugar and a few drops fresh lemon juice. Put is a piping bag/zip top and decorate away.

One suggestion is to use organic butter for the TASTE. It does not compare with conventional butter, the flavor is about a billion times better. Target has organic butter for about $4.39 lb. It is well worth it, especially if you are giving these as gifts.

If anyone wants a gingerbread cookie recipe that is no fail and beyond amazing, try this:

http://www.marthastewart.com/315628/gingerbread-snowflakes

The recipe is a bit long, so I won't repost it here, but please check it out.

I normally do not like Martha Stewart recipes because they are so fussy, but this one is sooooo goooood. It makes a ton of cookies so would be perfect if you are gift giving them (I seriously do not know how she claims it makes 17 cookies, no WAY, more like 6 dozen). I use the Grandma's molasses because it is thick, the store bought molasses is usually thin like maple syrup so I avoid it.

It will convert the "I hate gingerbread" people. It really is that good. I look forward to them all year.

I tried this one a few weeks ago and loved it. It was a nice change, different flavor combination. Would be good with coffee for a breakfast treat because it really isn't that sweet. I made the two loves, but you can make one bundt cake, yummy.

TLC stinks said...

I don't understand how coughing kids have caused her not to sleep well. Her bedroom is on the main floor, the kids are all upstairs. Bad news for any kid that wakes her up in the middle of the night!

I believe she not only has the main sink but also an island sink, so two faucets. I find her having someone over for dinner to fix something quite odd. If I had to maintain that big house, I would surely have a go-to handyman on my speed dial. I truly don't know what to believe any longer as to what she tweets. She just doesn't live in a common sense world.

Kate doesn't have a clue about food accompaniments.

I can't imagine her standing at the counter stuffing pasta shells either. Maybe Katherine sent them over and told her to serve them with something green. You would think she'd want to show off one of her 'famous' salads she yammers on about all the time.

Hey Kate, instead of writing a frikkin' cookbook, try reading one first.

Safeway sells pre-stuffed, frozen shells as well as other stuffed pastas. They also have a new product which is a steam in the bag brussel sprout, lightly sauces with bacon mix. I suppose one could steam then add some cheese and panko on top and bake. NOT AS A SIDE FOR PASTA! If anything the brussel sprouts should be slightly pickled and served on an antipasto platter with your meats, cheeses, olives, etc.

As for my seeming obsession with frozen delights...I Work, go to the gym after work (unless I can find a good excuse to skip the gym LOL) and I volunteer so my days are full. Sometimes it's just easier to pull something out of the freezer. Maybe I should haul out the crock pot (yes, I said it Dwindle) and start using it again. It just seems to make so much for just me and hubby.

So now the sheeple, who are hopelessly infatuated with a 37-year-old woman who they have never met in their lives and who couldn't give two shits about them, are calling the haters 'mentally ill.'

Personally, I don't agree with the nonfans who harass Kate on twitter and say hateful things; that just gives the sheeple something to whine about and makes them as bad as vile Kate.

BUT for them to call the haters mentally ill?! I'll tell you what's mentally ill: being so over-the moon, head-over-heels in love with yourself and so unfathomably narcissistic that you accuse every person who has a problem with you of being jealous of you, refusing to acknowledge that there are far richer, more famous, kinder, prettier, younger, more gracious real celebrities who actually have a talent to offer, who these people would be "jealous" of before they would be jealous of you or anything about your life. That's what I call mentally ill.

I TOTALLY understand it's not for everyone. I would never prank an audience if I don't know how everyone feels about it. I remember a sheeple blog once posted an April Fools joke that they had seen the light about Kate and were shutting down. It was stupid and not funny. I would NEVER do such a thing on this blog knowing there are too many people here who aren't into that kind of humor. And also knowing that's simply not funny.

They have never been able to explain this. This is the missing link in their just jealous argument that makes it fail every time.

Why am I not, say, jealous of Jennifer Garner? She has sweet kids, is rich, a great husband, in the paps, very famous, pretty, talented. I don't sit around wringing my hands saying I hate that bitch! Admin 35, exactly, they just can't comprehend it. If you think about it, their accusations of us being jealous are rather contradictory. They act like Kate has such a busy busy beyond busy schedule and how does she do it and she has it so rough bc she works so hard and gets so much flack and has a deadbeat ex husband who does nothing for her or the 8 kids... Okay, we'll then who would be jealous of that, sheeple? LOL, makes no sense.

For the record, I think Jon is far from a deadbeat, but actually a great dad despite his past poor judgement - I just know the sheeple don't like him and put on a 'poor poor Kate' song and dance, while speaking on the other side of their mouths by saying we are jealous of Kate's unbelievably amazing life.

I was a Psyc major in college and nothing I learned about, no mental disorder, no case study, nothing perplexed me as much as Sheeple Logic. I would NEVER pass such a course, if it existed.

Realitytvkids.com ~ Administrator said...

Brussels sprouts have a very earth, strong flavor with an aftertaste and if you overcook them as she probably did throwing them in the oven, it's even stronger. I wouldn't pair them with pasta because pasta's taste is light and delicate and smooth and should correspond with some kind of vegetable that will complement that, not compete with it. I love Brussels sprouts in the winter but usually match them up with chicken.

A nice big mixed green salad or romaine Caesar would have been better. We had baked ravioli last night with Caesar salad and it tasted like anything you could get in the restaurant. Mmmmmm.

You're right, though, about a few of the haters. It's not all of the non-fans, just a handful of the regulars.

They don't seem to be able to grasp the idea that with this constant barrage of tweets all they are doing is making Kate look more and more like the poor victim of bullying and harassment. Instead of a bella bar whose first ingredient is nuts, buy nuts in the bulk aisle and take those along.

And I hope no one is using these as meal replacements. The implication is wards off cravings and keeps you full and whatnot seems to me implying this might be something to help you skip a meal. And of course the sheeple are placing their orders. What is Kate getting out of this, or hoping to get out of it? She's certainly not hawking this product out of the goodness of her heart or because she believes, as a consumer, that this product is worthy of recognition.

If only Kate would spend half as much time as she does yapping about herself, her "busy" schedule and whatnot and if her fans spent half as much time away from Twitter as they do on it...oh *gasp* look at that...you'd might have remense of job pursuits, actual lives.

Kate's example in life isn't setting her kids any favors when it comes to realities much less much of a work ethic, no Kate, I said worth ethnic, not "workout," your idiodic supposed "enjoyable" family runs are indeed quite laughable really. I almost feel sorry for you.

Any of you as parents or older I mean, I as a child didn't want to spend even half my time with my parents, I can imagine the same is said for parents on some level that they don't want to spend ALL their time with their kids. Not to be mean but don't couples go out, date night whatever, girls night out at least once in a while to get away from their kids? Again, I don't mean to come off as parents just up and ditch their kids constantly (ahem, Kate? I'll wait while you take out your pad and paper to take notes on that).

All I've seen Kate do is bemoan the cost of Christmas, babble on and on about her stupid granola bars and coffee. You know what, it's true after all, Kate does have OCD (Obsessive Coffee Disorder). My guess is she's replaces her meals with coffee, bars and her stupid Kate salads. I may not have the best health track myself when it comes to food for personal reasons but nobody can or should live on just coffee you uneducated mockery of a nutritionist nit wit, yes, you Kate.

Kate is wasting valuable time in earning herself with a paying job nobody said you had to have your life handed to you on reality show. She took the easy way out. Her mistake was quiting her job to begin with because I do believe she said TLC the show paid better. Well, what about now? I don't see TLC forking over for your bills now.

Sooner or later her piggy bank will be empty and she won't have the skills, education or even the enthusiasm to fall back on a real, regular job like you know, most people have.

I'd hate to be in her shoes when all her kids are asking for high price things in a couple years she won't be able to afford and they stand there and scoff at her, "But you can afford your hobby, why can't we?" (Gymnastics, anyone?) Rule is: if you can afford one, you probably can afford the other. But she probably can't even add the cost of how much coffee she sucks down against how much organic milk she could afford.

Kate finds this statement profound? I'm giggling as I type.

This and the statement by the Milo wannabe stating that the haters know nothing about her life that wasn't on TV or magazines is sheer delusion.

She puts her and her kid's life out there on twitter. In HER OWN words. Even if Robert never wrote his book, we know many more things about Kate from twitter, her website and her CC blog, than from TV and tabloids. She is the one putting the info out there--and it ain't pretty.

I had to laugh when one of her enablers used #Smart Chicks Click to describe the fans who have pledged their undying support. I think the word she meant to use was "Clique".

The tweeter who suggested that Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up" is the new sheeple/enabler anthem, was spot on.

♫ ♫ Never gonna give you up,
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry,
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you ♫ ♫

Auntie 65, you are right on the money. I don't feel she is genuine in the least.

That's what is so heartbreaking to me. Despite all of her overly happy, peppy, puppies and rainbows and butterflies isn't-life-glorious tweets, I think that she is a deeply lonely, unhappy person.

I feel that she has serious issues forming healthy relationships. I think she has issues that go beyond anything snark-worthy. I think that is why she exploits the fact that she has 8 kids so much... She doesn't feel like she has anything else.

I am sure she has at least one special talent, everybody does, but she hasn't found it in anything she's tried (dancing, blogging); she is divorced and hasn't had a special relationship with a man in several years; she doesn't associate much with her parents or her brother: most people in the public cant stand her; most of her "friends" are out-of-state.

So I am truly, honest to goodness not jealous of her. Rather, regardless of how much I can't stand what she does to those kids and how she has treated people in general, I am beyond heartbroken for her (even though I know that much of problems have been caused by her own behavior). I just hate seeing anyone as unhappy as I think she is deep down.

Btw I do notice that I started almost every sentence with "I".. Sheeple, I am not a narcissist, only speaking in terms of I because none of this was fact, but my humble opinion

As for her snack of a bella bar how about a piece of fruit and some almonds. My girlfriend and I were standing in a checkout line a couple of weeks ago when she asked me if I'd ever had a Five Hour Energy drink. I looked at her like she was on crack and said no. I don't drink soda why would I drink that. She replied that it might pick her up in the afternoon. She doesn't eat well or exercise so she's constantly tired. Plus she is on thyroid medication which should help but it doesn't seem to be helping her. Anyway, I said have a piece of fruit and some almonds, that's my pick me up in the afternoon. She's not into fruit so I doubt she'll try it.

Depending on the time Milo sent the tweet, she may have 'assumed' dinner was over (8-9pm, I'd think they'd have eaten). Just like many of Milo's 'all knowing' tweets to Kate, I think most are common sense and easy assumptions and because they're all supportive, Kate never corrects Milo.

Not only that but that would mortify a kid no matter how terrible the tragedy.

Wouldn't it scare kids though a bunch of parents suddenly coming in to class to hug their kids? As much as any parent would want to. That would scare me as a kid. I would think the parent themselves were gonna die or I wasn't safe.
*****
It would absolutely traumatize kids to have parents flood in, hysterical, crying, scared and confused.
The parents should be adults here and not scare the crap out of their kids because they can't contain their own anxiety.
Kate looks at this behavior as evidence of how good a mom she is, we know this. It's part of her really involved mental illness.

Tucker exactly she thinks this proves she is a good mom because she cares enough to swing by the school. And after that spectacle she just left them there to continue on with math? Geez! When the reality is good parents put aside every need in their body to squeeze their babies and just let the kids have a normal day despite your grief, fear and needs. Plenty of time to hug and talk about it if they need to at home.

I picked up my kids at school. The youngest spilled cheerios on the back seat. Ordinarily, the mess would have bothered me, we would have cleaned it up together and I would have told her to be more careful.

Today I said nothing. It didn't matter. This shooting really puts things in perspective.

We need to wake up to the issues of our society. There is a stigma associated with mental illness, and so often it's dismissed and nothing is done until something like this happens. What were the warning signs, and could something have been done to prevent it?
___________________________________
THANK YOU!!!
Of course everyone (ok, not everyone- but so many) jump to the debate of gun control and 2 amendment rights every time a school shooting occurs. As I wrote in my earlier post, two weeks ago my assignment was to write a paper on school shootings and public policy and we addressed that- public reactions, gun control, etc. and my conclusions were that it wasn't a matter of school safety or lack there of, or a matter 2 amendment rights- it is about mental illness. A person is having a problem and chooses to act on it by shooting in a school. What were the signs? That is the question. Did anyone see them? Were they dismissed? Could they have been addressed and this tragedy averted? Sane people don't just go and shoot up a school. They just dont. That is the issue. Something was bothering this young man. Or he was a sociopath.

You know there was a man in China who went to an elementary school and attacked 22 kids today. With a KNIFE. It's about the crazy people, not about the weapon. People will do what they want to do if they are not in their right minds.
I think you are right that something was wrong with this man. They say he killed his dad at the house, his mom and kids (et al) at the school and his girlfriend is missing. His facebook page has been taken down too.

Completely agree that Ms Kreider cares mostly about making herself look like a good mother, even during a tragedy.

But, and i say this with utmost respect, maybe just for today, we can focus on what's really important and not focus on Kate? What stupid Kate says or lies about doesn't change the fact that over two dozen sets of parents will never see their children again.

I know she puts it out there and no harm is meant by it... It's just a thought.

Also if Kate comes in to hug them but little Jenny's mother can't because she works for a living instead of exploiting Jenny, how does that make Jenny feel? If I were her I'd be petrified, I would wonder if my mom was okay, if wonder why she didn't come if maybe the shooter got her too or she just doesn't care enough to come? When really Jenny's mom is doing the right thing by letting her finish the day without scaring her. Awesome job Kate.

That's exactly why I didn't pick my kids up early. I didn't want to disrupt their day and frighten them by wondering why I was there.

I believe, though, Kate waited until the end of the day. She tweeted that after she picked them up, probably in the car. She didn't say that she just got home, but rather that she just picked them up.

Yes, but even little 8 year old Jenny knows by now that Collin and Hannah's mom is an attention seeking whackadoo. At this age they are probably afraid of her and feel sorry for the sextuplets. Now at 12 years old, the other kids are laughing at Kate, and ridiculing her and the twins have all those conflicting emotions of embarrassment and anger and wanting to crawl under the linoleum, but still loving their mom.

IF she went up there, it was for attention, nothing else.

Guys I like you all and I love this blog, truly, but I have to say, I'm disappointed.

Honestly, who cares if Kate drove to school or when she did? How will that change what happened? Why is it even important?

I know this blog is a blog to talk about Kate among other things, and Im not saying we have to pretend Kate doesn't exist and totally ignore the way she makes everything about her and her 8 kids. BUT I worry that this is the kind of stuff that causes sheeple to label us as "bullies." Why do we need to dwell on Kate today? Yes, she lies and makes everything about her and rubs her motherhood in our faces -- that holds true every day and we talk about it every day. I think today there are more important things going on.

I am in no way trying to offend anyone, and I am deepy sorry if this does. You have a right to discuss what you wish, it's just a bit disheartening. And I do think you are fantastic people who care, I just don't see what Kate has to do with any of this.

local, at 4 years old, I probably would have done the same thing. Mine were older, my son was in high school. And I was realizing that this was a history making moment and I wanted him to share it with his peers. I also trusted the teachers at his school to guide the raw emotions as the day developed. But for your 4 year old? Yep, I would have wanted my child in my arms. Absolutely.

My heart is so incredibly heavy for all involved in all this. I was tearful while making my apple pie and I think I messed up my french crumb topping. Oh well. I was actually hanging on ok till I saw Prez Obama, greyfaced with dark circles under his eyes, tearing and choking up on national tv.

If a parent came to school, I think the the front office and the teachers wouldn't let the class be interrupted anyway, they typically call the kids out of class and have them meet their visitors in the office or the hallway. My mom never came in, and I never went in the class. I don't recall seeing anyone come in, either. Maybe others here have had different experiences, but that's mine.

Totally understandable. Everything stopped that day. It was a terrorist attack on our nation- an act of WAR. There were reports of planes still in the sky, and no one knew where they were headed.
Very different than today's tragedy.

I think the question is, did Kate actually drive to school, disrupt classes to hug her kids? If so, it's absolutely instructional to any parent to not upset your child! This is ridiculous and I'll tell you why I believe Kate would give in to her immature impulses-- because she did it with Jon when he had custody.
Kate tried to storm the gates to her house (changing the key pad entry number at the gate works both ways) when Jon had custody. She was wrong, wrong, wrong and terrible quixotic and disruptive. Police had to be called! What a scene she caused.
Whoopie had her number though.

The children's privacy is a fine line and perhaps the child should have been referred to as "one of the girl tups". OK.
But, one day, and those of you who grew up with moms like Kate can attest, some day, these kids will be relieved to know that not everyone believed the fairy tale that Kate spins on an ongoing basis on her blog, on Twitter and in every interview.
Some of these kids will be very glad to know that someone believes the real story and not the pablum Kate peddles for her fans, and I believe the story about gymnastics. The kids will know that people out there (probably particularly locals) felt for them, for their being filmed, for working long hours, for being the victims of her parental alientation, for being victims of severe corporal punishment (that I'm damn sure hasn't stopped).
I think it's just the tip of the iceberg.
